Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his nightly address, on Saturday, New Year’s eve speaking to the Russian people said that their President Vladimir Putin is waging a war against Kyiv to ensure he stays in power “until the end of his life” and is destroying their country.

This comes after Russia unleashed a barrage of missiles over Ukraine, on December 31, as a result of which at least one person was killed while dozens were injured, said officials. In the address, Zelensky switched to speaking Russian, seemingly directing his message to the Russian people and Kremlin following the attacks.

“All this war that you are waging, you – Russia, it is not the war with NATO, as your propagandists lie…It is not for something historical. It’s for one person to remain in power until the end of his life. And what will be with all of you, citizens of Russia, does not concern him,” said Zelensky.

The Ukrainian president’s address followed Putin’s New Year address in which he was seen surrounded by people in military uniforms, referring to which Zelensky said, “Russian leader is hiding behind the troops, behind missiles, behind the walls of his residences and palaces.”

He added that the Russian president “hides behind you and burns your country and your future. No one will ever forgive you for terror. No one in the world will forgive you for that. Ukraine will not forgive.”

According to Ukrainian officials, missile strikes were also launched by Moscow, on Sunday, on Kyiv, hours into the New Year, but no immediate casualties were reported. Meanwhile, the head of the country’s armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhny, said air defences managed to shoot down at least 12 of the 20 Russian cruise missiles fired, on Saturday.

Additionally, the Ukrainian president also said that “most” of the Russian missiles were intercepted and that if it was not for the air defence the death toll would be “much bigger” and even called the attack inhumane.

Speaking to the Ukrainian people, Zelensky thanked them for their efforts to repel Russian attacks, “We fight as one team - the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine.”

While public celebrations to mark the New Year seemed impossible due to the countrywide curfews and attack on New Year’s Eve when sirens wailed across Ukraine, people gathered near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv's central Christmas tree as midnight approached, said media reports. Some residents even sang the national anthem while officials accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians gathered for the New Year celebrations.

On the other hand, Putin speaking to the Russian people in his new year address said that the conflict in Ukraine is about, “defending our people and our historical lands” and “moral, historical rightness is on our side”.

He added, “The West lied about peace. It was preparing for aggression... and now they are cynically using Ukraine and its people to weaken and split Russia.” This comes after the Russian president accused the West of “provoking” Moscow to launch a “special military operation”, as the Kremlin calls it, in Ukraine which began in February 2022.

As the Christmas festivities come to an end, Russia is all set to mark a new Calendar year. However, people in Moscow have confessed to not feeling upbeat despite the bustling streets and ice statues at Gorky Park.

Due to President Vladimir Putin's 'special military operations' in Ukraine, people in Moscow have also felt the absence of less expensive Western goods in the market while shopping. Letters adopted by the Russian military, Z, V and O, dazzled at the entrance of the famous park named after Maxim Gorky, reported Reuters.

New Year's is the most crucial holiday season in Russia. However, Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7.

On her evening walk to Gorky Park, Maria, a resident, said that the 10-month-old war between Russia and Ukraine has directly influenced her festive spirit. "It is difficult to be cheerful when you understand that people out there are going through such awful times," she told Reuters.

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, sirens wailed across the capital city Kyiv as people were urged to take shelter, on early Friday, a day after Moscow carried out the biggest aerial assault since the conflict first began in February, said a report by Reuters. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s army claims that it managed to destroy “all” Iranian-made kamikaze drones launched by Russia overnight.

The report also noted, shortly after 2:00 am (local time) air raid sirens were sounded across the Ukrainian capital and the city government issued an alert on its Telegram messaging app channel asking residents to seek shelter. The alert lasted for a little over two hours, reported AFP.

Additionally, Olekskiy Kuleba, governor of the Kyiv region also took to the messaging app to inform that an “attack by drones” was underway. While a Reuters witness claimed that they heard several explosions and the sound of anti-aircraft fire at least 20 km south of the Ukrainian capital.

“Night attack by martyr drones. Russia once again targeted our infrastructure facilities. Air defence forces repelled drones. Previously, there are no hits. Emergency services are working at the crash site,” said Kuleba.

Subsequently, the governor also said there were no casualties and the attack had targeted infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a video address, late Thursday claimed that their air commands in central, southern, eastern and western Ukraine repelled 54 Russian missiles and 11 drones on Thursday, reported Reuters.

Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko, also said that the capital was under attack by at least seven drones out of which two were shot down “on approach” and confirmed that there were no casualties. He added that falling debris had damaged windows in two buildings in the city’s southwestern neighbourhood, reported AFP.

According to Ukrainian officials, more than 120 missiles were fired during Thursday’s assault, during which more than 18 residential buildings and 10 critical infrastructure installations were destroyed. However, in a statement on Friday, Ukraine’s army said that they managed to repel an overnight drone attack by Russia.

Meanwhile, General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, on Friday morning, said that over the past 24 hours, Moscow has launched 85 missile strikes, 35 air strikes, and 63 strikes from multiple rocket launch systems, reported Reuters. It added, that Russian forces also shelled nearly 20 settlements in the eastern Ukrainian city, Bakhmut and more than 25 settlements in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Kyiv’s air force, in a statement, on social media said, “On the night of December 29-30, the enemy attacked Ukraine with Iranian-made kamikaze drones.” It added that a total of 16 drones were launched from the southeastern and northern directions out of which “all” were destroyed by the country’s air defence. The Ukrainian army also claimed Russia had launched 69 cruise missiles out of which 54 were shot down, on Thursday morning.

However, following this attack, Zelensky’s address also noted that most regions including the capital Kyiv, Odesa and Kherson were left without power and that the outages have been particularly difficult in these cities. “But this is nothing compared with what could have happened if it were not for our heroic anti-aircraft gunners and air defence,” Zelensky added. This comes as Russia has reportedly been targeting Ukraine’s energy grid which has left millions without heat or power in the middle of winter.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg appealed to the member states to provide Ukraine with more weapons, in his interview published by DPA on Friday.

"I call on allies to do more. It is in all our security interests to make sure Ukraine prevails and (Russian President Vladimir) Putin does not win," said Stoltenberg, while speaking to the German news agency.

He emphasised the importance of providing enough ammunition to Ukraine for the systems already in place and added that there was an "enormous" need for spare parts and ammunition.

Since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine, the United States and the European Union has imposed tough sanctions on Russia. While the Kremlin decided to stop oil and gas supply to Europe, China has emerged as a major importer of Russian oil. The trade between the two countries has gone up quite a bit in the recent times and China has even decided to not criticise Russia on the global stage.

What is Ukraine President Zelensky's 10-point peace plan?

The War in Ukraine is in its 10th month. The conflict has reignited cold war tensions, altered dimensions of the world order, and brought to the fore a new, concerning nuclear threat. Watch WION's special broadcast for a comprehensive report.

YEAR ENDER 2022: A war that changed dimensions of the world order

Earlier this year, in November, amid the Group of 20 (G20) major economies meeting in Indonesia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the leaders present to step and stop the Russian invasion of Kyiv.

It was then that he first mentioned his 10-point peace plan which Zelensky said would end the conflict, “justly and on the basis of the UN Charter and international law”. Since then the Ukrainian president has spoken about his plan with the United States President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington, last week.

Recently, he also sought help from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during their call, for the implementation. This was preceded by Zelensky calling upon world leaders to hold a Global Peace Summit based on the plan.

Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan:

1. Radiation and nuclear safety, focusing on restoring security around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, which is now Russian-occupied.

2. Food security, including protecting and ensuring Ukraine’s grain exports to the world’s poorest nations.

3. Energy security, with a focus on price restrictions on Russian energy resources, as well as aiding Ukraine with restoring its power infrastructure, half of which has been damaged by Russian attacks.

4. Release of all prisoners and deportees, including war prisoners and children deported to Russia.

5. Restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and Russia reaffirming it according to the UN Charter, which Zelenskyy said is “not up to negotiations”.

6. Withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of Ukraine’s state borders with Russia.

7. Justice, including the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian war crimes.

8. The prevention of ecocide, and the protection of the environment, with a focus on demining and restoring water treatment facilities.

9. Prevention of an escalation of conflict and building security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine.

10. Confirmation of the war’s end, including a document signed by the involved parties.

What does the proposal miss?

A report by The i, a British national newspaper, said that while the analysts have called the list “maximalist” and unrealistic, it also offers better scope for negotiations moving forward. Notably, while Ukraine has emphasised on “territorial integrity”, it fails to mention Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

ALSO WATCH | Gravitas: Zelensky's "peace plan" demands punishment for Russia

Furthermore, while the Ukrainian president has previously shown interest in negotiations with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, his officials have also reportedly called for his ouster. On December 25, Putin during his interview with state television, Rossiya 1 said, “We are ready to negotiate with everyone involved about acceptable solutions, but that is up to them - we are not the ones refusing to negotiate, they are.”

Subsequently, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podolyak took to Twitter and said, “Russia single-handedly attacked Ukraine and is killing citizens…Russia doesn't want negotiations, but tries to avoid responsibility.”

Notably, Kyiv also broke away from the tradition where both countries celebrate Christmas on January 7 as opposed to December 25, in line with the Russian Orthodox Church which follows the ancient Julian calendar.

Additionally, the Ukrainian president also called out Putin for speaking about negotiations and continuing to target and hit power stations, leaving millions without electricity and heat amidst freezing winter conditions.

Therefore, despite what the Russian president might have claimed for the second time, the evidence points to the contrary, who also in turn blamed Ukraine and its Western allies for the lack of talks, a stance which the West had rejected as Moscow's posturing as it continues to attack Kyiv.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, on Monday, said that Kyiv wants a peace summit within two months at the United Nations with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as mediator. He also spoke about how Russia must face the consequences for its alleged war crimes before direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

Furthermore, Ukraine’s foreign minister also invited other countries’ participation in the potential peace talks citing the example of Turkey’s role in the grain agreement. Meanwhile, the UN has given a cautious response and said, “As the secretary-general has said many times in the past, he can only mediate if all parties want him to mediate,” said UN spokesperson Florencia Soto Nino-Martinez, on Monday.

How has Russia reacted to Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan?

Earlier this month, Russia had rejected Zelensky’s peace proposal and said that Ukraine needs to accept new territorial “realities”, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, which also included taking four Ukrainian regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson) under Moscow as its “new subjects”.

He also said that there is “no question” about Russia pulling out its troops from Ukraine by the end of this year. “They appeared as a result of referendums that took place in these territories. Without taking these new realities into account, no kind of progress is possible,” said Peskov.

Similarly, late Monday, Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reiterated that the proposal of “demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy,”

He added, “The point is simple: Fulfil them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army,” as per the Russian news agency, TASS. Furthermore, while Washington has given Ukraine billions of dollars in military aid, the country has been cautious with its approach to Zelensky’s peace plan as well as the proposed summit.

Ukrainian President talks to Indian PM over the phone

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Ukrainian president and Indian PM spoke on the phone for the fourth time since the beginning of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, in February, earlier this year. Subsequently, Zelensky had also taken to Twitter and said that he spoke to PM Modi during which he wished for a successful G20 presidency.

“It was on this platform that I announced the peace formula and now I count on India's participation in its implementation. I also thanked for humanitarian aid and support in the UN,” said the Ukrainian president.

Additionally, the Indian government also mentioned PM Modi’s main priorities for India's G20 Presidency which include giving a voice to the concerns of developing nations on issues like food and energy security.

While India has repeatedly been criticised by Western countries for its import of oil from Russia at a discounted price, New Delhi has defended its stance of putting its people first. Furthermore, India has also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence in Russia-Ukraine but has not outright condemned the conflict but maintained that the crisis is solved through dialogue and diplomacy.

ALSO WATCH | Gravitas: Zelensky's "peace plan" demands punishment for Russia Furthermore, while the Ukrainian president has previously shown interest in negotiations with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, his officials have also reportedly called for his ouster. On December 25, Putin during his interview with state television, Rossiya 1 said, “We are ready to negotiate with everyone involved about acceptable solutions, but that is up to them - we are not the ones refusing to negotiate, they are.” Subsequently, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podolyak took to Twitter and said, “Russia single-handedly attacked Ukraine and is killing citizens…Russia doesn't want negotiations, but tries to avoid responsibility.” Notably, Kyiv also broke away from the tradition where both countries celebrate Christmas on January 7 as opposed to December 25, in line with the Russian Orthodox Church which follows the ancient Julian calendar. ALSO WATCH | Ukrainian President Zelensky seeks help from PM Modi in peace keeping formula Additionally, the Ukrainian president also called out Putin for speaking about negotiations and continuing to target and hit power stations, leaving millions without electricity and heat amidst freezing winter conditions. ALSO READ | Ukraine and Russia to sign grain deal resuming Black Sea exports Furthermore, Ukraine’s foreign minister also invited other countries’ participation in the potential peace talks citing the example of Turkey’s role in the grain agreement. ALSO READ | Ukraine war: Zelensky's peace plan must include annexed regions, says Kremlin Similarly, late Monday, Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reiterated that the proposal of “demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy,” He added, “The point is simple: Fulfil them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army,” as per the Russian news agency, TASS. Furthermore, while Washington has given Ukraine billions of dollars in military aid, the country has been cautious with its approach to Zelensky’s peace plan as well as the proposed summit. Ukrainian President talks to Indian PM over the phone Meanwhile, on Monday, the Ukrainian president and Indian PM spoke on the phone for the fourth time since the beginning of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, in February, earlier this year. ALSO WATCH | India-Ukraine Relations: President Zelensky, PM Modi hold fourth phone conversation this year Additionally, the Indian government also mentioned PM Modi’s main priorities for India's G20 Presidency which include giving a voice to the concerns of developing nations on issues like food and energy security. The office has released a count of known casualties which indicates that 6884 civilians have lost their lives in the conflict from February 24 to December 26 this year.

After sustained gains in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces have had to retreat from large swathes of land in the face of Ukrainian counteroffensive. Russia has since then stepped up missile attacks across Ukraine and especially on the country's energy infrastructure. There have been civilian deaths. Russia claims that it targets military-linked installations and not civilian.

On Wednesday, Russia stepped up mortar and artillery attacks on the liberated city on Kherson. Russia fired 33 missiles from multiple rocket launchers at civilian targets in Kherson in the 24 hours to early Wednesday, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said in its morning report. Russia denies targeting civilians.

Heavy fighting also persisted around the Ukrainian-held city of Bakhmut, now largely in ruins, in the eastern province of Donetsk, and to its north, around the cities of Svatove and Kreminna in Luhansk province, where Ukrainian forces are trying to break Russian defensive lines.

Ukraine war: UN releases civilian death stats, says number can be higher

Ukrainian President Zelensky has said he is counting on India who's now holding the G20 Presidency to push for the implementation for Russia-Ukraine peace formula. Prime Minister Modi and President Zelensky spoke over the phone on Monday.

India-Ukraine Relations: President Zelensky, PM Modi hold fourth phone conversation this year

Ukraine asked for the exclusion of Russia from the United Nations Security Council amid the ongoing crisis. The statement from the Ukrainian authorities said that Russia "illegally occupies the seat of the USSR in the UN Security Council" since the fall of the Soviet Union back in 1991.

"Ukraine calls on the member states of the UN... to deprive the Russian Federation of its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and to exclude it from the UN as a whole."

"From a legal and political point of view, there can be only one conclusion: Russia is a usurper of the Soviet Union's seat in the UN Security Council," the Ukrainian defence ministry added.

While the UN Security Council has 15 members in total, the veto power lies with the five permanent members. While most have taken a hard stance against the Russian invasion, China has continued to support Russia and even increased its trade relations with the Kremlin in the recent past.

Meanwhile, Russia said on Monday that it destroyed a Ukrainian drone at the Engels airfield – over 600 kms away from the border. Russian news agencies reported that three people were killed in the operation which was deemed to be the most intrusive attack to date from the Ukrainian side.

Russian President Vladimir Putin criticised the attack and said that the current offensive in Ukraine will help "unite the Russian people" and warned against Russia's "geopolitical opponents (of) aiming to tear apart Russia, the historical Russia". "Divide and conquer, that's what they have always sought to accomplish and are still seeking to do," Putin said in a television interview according to AFP.
