<p>The remarks of Zelensky were in stark contrast to his Tuesday’s statement in which he slammed NATO leaders for failing to provide a specific timeline for Ukraine’s membership.</p>

<p>On the last day of NATO’s summit in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, Zelensky said that he acknowledges “some people’s fear” of Ukraine joining NATO and added that "nobody is willing to have a world war".</p>

<p>He “agreed” that Ukraine cannot be a member of the alliance while a war is going on within its borders, but, he added, "signals are important".</p>

<p>The Ukrainian leader said that he expects Ukraine to join NATO once its war with Russia&nbsp;ends.</p>

<p>"I am confident that, after the war, Ukraine will be in NATO. We'll be doing everything possible to make it happen," Zelensky said.</p>

<p>In an interview to CNN, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that it was not possible to accept Ukraine’s membership bid right away, because it would be "an inescapable fact" due to the treaty's mutual defence clause.</p>

<p>Further, they are also expected to step up their financial commitment, making the target of spending 2 per cent of national wealth on defence a minimum figure, rather than a general ambition.</p>

<p>BBC reported that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would call on allies directly to meet this target.</p>

<p>However, one other contentious issue is also expected to be discussed. Whether to accept Ukraine’s bid to join the Western alliance.</p>

<p>For years Russia has opposed Ukraine's request to become a member, fearing it would bring NATO forces too close to its own territory.</p>

<p>But, Finland, which has a 1,340km (832 mile) land border with Russia, became a member in April 2023. Sweden is also expected to join the military alliance.</p>

<h2><strong>What was the issue with Sweden’s bid?</strong></h2>

<p>For decades, Sweden and Finland took a neutral foreign policy posture in the region, but the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war that started on February 24 last year triggered a shift in their approach.</p>

<p>While Finland managed to become a member unopposed, Sweden faced tough resistance from Hungary and Turkey—the other two members of NATO.</p>

<p>Turkey blamed Sweden for hosting its enemies, such as pro-Kurdish groups, and was irked when it allowed the burning of the Quran during protests.</p>

<p>But NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said that Sweden has now addressed "Turkey's legitimate security concerns", and that the Turkish government has decided to accept the country's application.</p>

<p>Stoltenberg said Hungary's government had promised to do the same.</p>

<p>Together, Sweden and Finland will bolster NATO forces with more than 280,000 regular and reserve troops.</p>

<h2><strong>What is the NATO membership process?</strong></h2>

<p>According to Article 10 of the alliance's charter, NATO follows an "open door" policy for countries seeking membership.</p>

<p>It says that countries that are party to the founding Washington Treaty can invite any European country to join the alliance in order to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic region.</p>

<p>But in order for a country to join NATO, unanimous approval is required, which means the approval of all existing allied countries.</p>

<p>NATO membership normally requires a long process. For membership, a multi-stage process is required to be completed by the aspiring nation.</p>

<p>Accordingly, when a country seeks to join the alliance, NATO sends an official invitation to that country. After that, a seven-step participation process begins.</p>

<h2><strong>Why Ukraine hasn’t been able to join NATO</strong></h2>

<p>In 2008, NATO said that Ukraine could join at a future date, but declined its September 2022 request for "fast-track" membership.</p>

<p>Article 5 of NATO's&nbsp;charter states that if one member is attacked, it is deemed to be an assault on all and hence all others must come to its defence.</p>

<p>If Ukraine joins the alliance during the current conflict with Russia, NATO countries would technically have to declare war on Russia.</p>

<p>Kyiv also believes that it cannot join NATO while the fighting rages. That would risk plunging the alliance into war with Russia.</p>

<p>The West has already sent weapons worth tens of billions of dollars to Ukraine to help it fight against Russia.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Germany said that it was sending long-range missiles and a coalition of 11 nations announced they will start training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 jets from next month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine has definitely got Western backing but it has, according to Zelensky, fallen short of his aspirations of putting Kyiv under NATO's collective defensive shield.</p>

West to offer long-term security commitments to Ukraine after slow progress on its NATO induction

<p>The White House on Friday announced that the proposed NATO membership of Ukraine will be discussed in the summit of the alliance scheduled next week in Vilnius, however, no decision will be taken in this regard.<br />

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the summit will emphasise the readiness of NATO to accept membership of Ukraine, which he termed as a “milestone” in itself.<br />

"The NATO Summit will dive into the question of NATO's relationship with Ukraine, both the question of its pathway towards future membership and the question of an ongoing partnership that has existed for several years," said Sullivan.<br />
<br />
However, "Ukraine will not be joining NATO coming out of this summit," he stated. Kyiv "still has further steps that it needs to take before membership," Sullivan said.</p>

This statement comes right after Turkey expressed its solidarity with Ukraine's membership proposal as Zelensky held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.<br />

"I raised the question of Ukraine's membership in the NATO alliance and was happy to hear that the President (Erdogan) supports Ukraine to be a NATO member," said Zelensky.<br />

"We made certain agreements. I asked Turkey to join into the efforts of rebuilding and transforming Ukraine, it is a colossal project, and we need Turkey’s experience and technology to help us,” he said.<br />

<p>NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday (April 21) that all NATO allies agreed that war-torn Ukraine would eventually become a member of the intergovernmental military alliance, but the main focus was to ensure that Ukraine prevails against Russia, the news agency Reuters reported.</p>

<p>Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of the Ukraine defence contact group at Ramstein air base in Germany, Stoltenberg said that once the war in Ukraine ends, Kyiv must have "the deterrence to prevent new attacks".</p>

<p>"I said in Kyiv yesterday that Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family and all&nbsp;NATO&nbsp;allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a&nbsp;NATO&nbsp;member. But the main focus now is, of course, on how to ensure that Ukraine prevails," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year, Ukraine has been seeking to be allowed into NATO. But according to Western diplomats, it remained a distant prospect.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Friday's announcement came a day after Jens Stoltenberg visited Ukraine, his first since the beginning of the war. The NATO secretary-general met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky. Stoltenberg also visited Bucha and laid a wreath in memory of those who died during the occupation of the town and visited a local church.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a joint press conference with Stoltenberg on Thursday, President Zelensky said, "Now, when the majority of people in NATO countries and the majority of Ukrainians support the entry of our country into the alliance, it is time to take the appropriate decision."</p>

<p>Zelensky also said that a NATO summit in July could become historic if Ukraine received a formal invitation to join.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Stoltenberg meanwhile, said, "Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family, Ukraine's future is in NATO, all allies agree on that."</p>

<p>During Friday's meeting at the&nbsp;Ramstein air base, Ukraine pressed allies for long-range weapons, jets and ammunition. And US Defence Secretary&nbsp;Lloyd Austin told reporters that Washington and allies would discuss providing more air defence and ammunition for Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Ukraine urgently needs our help to shield its citizens and infrastructure and forces from Russia’s missile threat,” Austin added.&nbsp;</p>
