<p>Twitter had been summoned by the committee today (Monday, February 11) but <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/twitter-ceo-and-senior-officials-refuse-to-appear-before-parliamentary-committee-196223">the company had declined to appear</a> saying the notice was too short.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The summons had been sent out on February 1.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thakur had hinted earlier that action would be taken against the microblogging site.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Of course it can be an issue of breach of parliamentary privilege. They are taking advantage of the world's biggest market and are unwilling to answer," IANS quoted Thakur as saying. He added that Twitter's reply has been taken note of by the committee&nbsp;and "we will take a serious note of it".</p>

<p>"It is a very serious subject, and the kind of reply they have given will be discussed in the parliamentary committee, and we will take further action on that," IANS quoted Thakur as saying.</p>

<p>BJP national spokesperson Meenakashi Lekhi had also warned Twitter of "repercussions".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In this situation, if Twitter is disrespecting the established institution of Parliament, then there are repercussions," she said at a press conference.</p>

<p>"There are repercussions because in any democratic country, institutions need to be respected by the world powers. If there is any violation of any sort, then there are repercussions to those violations...The institutions need to be respected," Lekhi added.</p>

<p>Industry insiders say the increasing number of regional tourists is helping to compensate for the major drop in western visitors since the Rohingya crisis, but revenues are down.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some experts have warned against boycotting the country, which was sealed off for decades by the former junta to all but the hardiest of travellers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Visitors staying away for ethical reasons could always donate their money instead, Vicky Bowman from the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business pointed out.&nbsp;</p>

They are Muslim unlike the country's Buddhist majority which considers them to be "Bengali" (Bangladeshi).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Most of the Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a special report in August, Reuters described how hate speech proliferated on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook at the peak of the military crackdown.</p>

<p>In August 2017, hundreds of new Twitter accounts suddenly sprang up in Myanmar.</p>

<p>Many of the tweets on these accounts appeared to be attempts to counter sympathetic portrayals of the Rohingya by the Western news media and human rights activists.</p>

<p>Reuters reported that these and similar tweets could still be found online nearly a year after the crackdown. Twitter's "hateful conduct policy" forbids attacking groups of people on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin, or engaging in "behaviour that incites fear about a protected group".</p>

<p>Reuters added that Twitter removed a number of tweets the news agency flagged to it in the run up to the publication of the report.&nbsp;</p>

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been in Myanmar, where he has meditated — tracked on his Apple watch whether that made him calmer and therefore sleep better — met monks and nuns, and of course tweeted about virtually everything under the Myanmar sun. That is everything but the Rohingya exodus. More than 7000,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar since August 2017 following a crackdown on them by the Myanmar army and security forces. The Rohingya live in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine. They are Muslim unlike the country's Buddhist majority which considers them to be "Bengali" (Bangladeshi). Most of the Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh. "Myanmar is an absolutely beautiful country. The people are full of joy and the food is amazing. I visited the cities of Yangon, Mandalay, and Bagan. We visited and meditated at many monasteries around the country," Dorsey tweeted. "The highlight of my trip was serving monks and nuns food, and donating sandals and umbrellas. This group of young nuns in Mandalay and their chanting was breathtaking and chilling," he added. Reuters added that Twitter removed a number of tweets the news agency flagged to it in the run up to the publication of the report. <p>Dorsey, who met Congress President Rahul Gandhi earlier in the day, pointed out that it was also important to understand the intent and context of the information to address the issue of fake news and misinformation.</p>

<p>"This is a multi-variable problem and there is not going to be one fix, it's like security. No one can build a perfect lock that no one can break," he said, adding that like with security, the company will have to stay ahead of those spreading misinformation.</p>

<p>Dorsey said Artificial Intelligence could help build a solution that may be near perfect.</p>

<p>According to a survey conducted by Twitter India, voting rights emerged as the top response when asked what people would consider the power of turning 18 years old.</p>

<p>The research, conducted with over 3,600 respondents aged 18-30-year-olds, found 94 per cent respondents indicating that they would vote in the upcoming elections, while 87 per cent said they believed that voting made them a responsible citizen.</p>

<p>About 53 per cent said they are voting because they want to make a difference.</p>

<p>The study also pointed towards the increasing importance of social media for information consumption as 69 per cent of Twitter users surveyed said they always stay up to date with political news and events versus 44 per cent of non-Twitter users.</p>
