Washington hits Iran-backed militant facilities in Syria in retaliation for strikes on US bases in Middle East

As the humanitarian toll of the crisis in the Israel-Hamas war continues to mount, Australia is also concerned for its citizens in the region and is ramping up efforts to ensure their safety and security.&nbsp;The country said Wednesday (Oct 25) that it is dispatching 'significant' military troops and two military transport jets to the Middle East, reported AFP news agency.&nbsp;

Defence Minister Richard Marles reportedly said that the move was being taken in order to provide assistance to Australian citizens in the Middle East region "if this gets worse." However, the official refrained from giving an exact number of troops that will be sent to the war-hit region.&nbsp;

As per reports, two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft had been deployed. The base location for these jets and troops also has been kept undisclosed by Marles, who is also deputy prime minister.&nbsp;

Other military aircraft, a C-17A Globemaster heavy transport aircraft, and a KC-30 air refueller have already been dispatched to the area.

The deadly strike from Gaza's Hamas on October 7 led to a bloody onslaught on Israeli citizens and it in turn triggered Israeli air strikes on the terrorist group.&nbsp;The Hamas-run Health Ministry said at least 5,791 Palestinians have been killed and 16,297 are injured.

The US's activities in Africa and the Middle East have grown crucially dependent on Djibouti. US President Joe Biden ordered the pre-positioning of armed personnel to be prepared, according to White House spokesperson John Kirby.

Kirby also indicated he was carefully monitoring events in Sudan. Up until now, there are no signs that Americans are being&nbsp;targeted, Kirby said during a briefing. But he continued to maintain that it was a dangerous place right now and not safe.&nbsp;

He said, "The best thing that can happen is for the two sides to put down their weapons, uphold a ceasefire, and allow aid to reach the people in Khartoum."

US residents in Sudan were earlier advised to remain indoors by the State Department. As per the report, a joint combined arms battalion of at least 500 soldiers will travel to the US in the second half of the year. The battalion would consist of mainly the army’s 333rd Mechanised Infantry Brigade and 542nd Armour Brigade, the report added.&nbsp;

He was earlier charged with kidnapping an American journalist and two Afghan civilians.In addition to those charges, the superseding indictment charges Najibullah with attacks on US troops conducted by him and the Taliban fighters under his command, including a June 26, 2008, attack on an American military convoy that killed three US&nbsp;Army servicemembers and their Afghan interpreter.

He is also charged with an attack that resulted in the shooting down of a US military helicopter&nbsp;on October 2008.

Audrey Strauss, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said that Najibullah will answer for his heinous acts in an American courtroom.

"As alleged, during one of the most dangerous periods of the conflict in Afghanistan, Haji Najibullah led a vicious band of Taliban insurgents who terrorized part of Afghanistan and attacked US&nbsp;troops, Strauss said.
