All the elections went quite peacefully and people voted in high numbers. All eyes were on the election results that were concluded on March 2. Though various exit polls show that BJP was leading in the state, the regional party of Tipra Motha has also played out an impressive show. Tipra Motha was founded by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the scion of the erstwhile royal family. He is all set to play a key role in the formation of the next government in Tripura. As the counting progressed, Tipra Motha was leading in 12 assembly constituencies out of 20 reserved for Scheduled Tribe categories, denting the hopes of the ruling BJP and the Left-Congress alliance of sailing through. The BJP is hopeful of making advances in this election as compared to the last elections in 2018. In 2018, the BJP managed to secure 36 seats. However, the Tipra Motha is emerging as a major challenge for the BJP in securing their goal. The slogan of the Tipra Motha, given by Pradyot Deb Barma was "Chini haa, chini shasan' (our land, our rule). He campaigned in Tripura with this slogan to connect with the local tribals, who form 32 per cent of Tripura's population. Barma also promised to work for carving out a separate state by the name of Tipraland, if his party or the alliance secures a decisive number of votes or seats. Al the elections went quite peacefully and people voted in high numbers. Now everyone is waiting for the election results with bated breath on March 2. A total of 259 candidates competed against each other in the electoral race for a seat in the Tripura assembly. Out of these 259 candidates, only 20 were women candidates. BJP contested 55 assembly seats with its ally IPFT fielding candidates in six constituencies. The CPI (M) contested 47 seats and the Congress fought in 13 constituencies. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) fielded nominees in 28 constituencies. The remaining 58 candidates contested independently. The ruling BJP has fielded the highest number of women candidates with 12 women. The Tipra Motha contested 42 seats. As voting is underway, all eyes are on the BJP. BJP become victorious in the last 2018 assembly elections when it ended the 25-year-long rule of the left. Meanwhile, this time Congress and the Left have joined hands to challenge the BJP. Incumbent Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio who has been in office for three terms may have an uphill task to retain his position as BJP becomes the single largest party. However, according to early trends, he was also leading from his Northern Angami-II seat. “We are hoping to win by record margin, including from my seat and form the next government,” Rio had said ahead of the result announcement. After the election last week, most exit polls had suggested that there might be a hung assembly in the state. Notably, Nagaland is the only state in the country to have no opposition as all parties having a presence in the 60-member assembly had backed the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-led government. In Meghalaya, NPP was ahead on 25 seats. Meanwhile, UDP and Congress, led on nine and five seats respectively. BJP and NPP went to elections separately after a five-year alliance. Though the parties have been in talks, it is still unclear if there will be a post-poll alliance. As for Tripura, BJP is expected to get another term, having destroyed CPM's 35-year rule in the state in the last assembly polls. As predicted by most exit polls, BJP is leading the state with 33 seats, per the early trends. Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha is leading from his Town Bordowali constituency.
