For decades, the joke about psychiatrists interpreting every dream object as a phallus has persisted. This supposedly reflects Sigmund Freud’s views. However, a new edition of Freud's seminal work, 'The Interpretation of Dreams,' revised by a modern scholar, is challenging these misconceptions.

The man behind this revised understanding of Freud's work is Mark Solms, a South African psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist.

His revised edition, a comprehensive 24-volume collection, was commissioned by the British Psychoanalytic Society and marks the 50th anniversary of the last segment of Freud's works. It will be unveiled at the Freud Museum in London on 19 September, ahead of a special conference at University College London.

Freud's understanding of sexuality

Mark Solms, as per The Guardian, clarified that Freud's understanding of sexuality was far broader than commonly perceived.

"Freud had a very broad understanding of sexuality," Solms explains.

"For him, any activity that was pleasure-seeking in its own right—anything that one does for the purposes of pleasure alone, as opposed to practical purposes—was 'sexual'."

Thus, simple pleasures like a baby sucking a dummy, a child kicking a football, or swinging on a swing, were described by Freud as "sexual," purely because they provided enjoyment. This broad definition led to significant misunderstandings of Freud's theories, and "Late in his life, Freud acknowledged as much," he added.

The new edition by Solms rectifies several translation errors from James Strachey’s standard English translation of the 1950s and 60s.

Solms, fluent in German and raised in Namibia where an older form of the language is still spoken, has corrected these mistakes and contextualised the word "sexual."

"I've been correcting some errors: Strachey was elderly, and his sight was poor," said Solms. He has also updated some outdated technical terms and included essays, lectures, and other writings not present in Strachey's version.

The birth of surrealism

Also read | Chimpanzees hold 'conversations' just like humans, new study finds Freud's understanding of sexuality Mark Solms, as per The Guardian, clarified that Freud's understanding of sexuality was far broader than commonly perceived. "Freud had a very broad understanding of sexuality," Solms explains. "For him, any activity that was pleasure-seeking in its own right—anything that one does for the purposes of pleasure alone, as opposed to practical purposes—was 'sexual'." Thus, simple pleasures like a baby sucking a dummy, a child kicking a football, or swinging on a swing, were described by Freud as "sexual," purely because they provided enjoyment. This broad definition led to significant misunderstandings of Freud's theories, and "Late in his life, Freud acknowledged as much," he added. The new edition by Solms rectifies several translation errors from James Strachey’s standard English translation of the 1950s and 60s. Solms, fluent in German and raised in Namibia where an older form of the language is still spoken, has corrected these mistakes and contextualised the word "sexual." "I've been correcting some errors: Strachey was elderly, and his sight was poor," said Solms. He has also updated some outdated technical terms and included essays, lectures, and other writings not present in Strachey's version. Also read | Breathing polluted air as kid? Prabhas' sci-fi thriller Kalki 2898 AD in legal trouble for hurting Hindu sentiments

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has disposed of a petition by Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda seeking that the authorities be restrained from taking coercive action against him over alleged construction on his property near the Kanha Tiger Reserve.

The court observed that Hooda’s plea was not maintainable, while also refusing to quash a show-cause notice issued to him in connection with the alleged construction near the buffer zone of the reserve.

“Whether petitioner (Hooda) is raising any construction or not, is a disputed question of fact which cannot be decided by this Court,” observed the single bench comprising Justice GS Ahluwalia.

The HC made it clear that it had not considered the merits of the allegations made in the show-cause notice to Hooda or the merits of the defence raised by the petitioner.

It said the proceedings shall be decided by SDO, Baihar in Balaghat district, strictly in accordance with evidence that would come on record.

The Sub Divisional Officer Balaghat had issued the notice to Hooda on June 18, referring to the report of an enquiry committee about raising construction without mandatory clearance from various departments and directed him to immediately stop the work.

The SDO had asked the petitioner to appear before the officer concerned on June 19 and submit documents concerning the clearances, if any sought. Hooda then moved the HC.

The government lawyer called the plea premature.

“The petition is disposed of with observations that in case if petitioner files an application for supply of copy of enquiry report submitted by enquiry committee, then the same shall be supplied to him within a period of three days from the date of filing of such application,” the court order of Thursday said and also made a series of observations.

If an application is filed by the petitioner for spot inspection in his presence, then the same shall be carried out by the Competent Authority, the court said.

“The date so fixed by SDO , Baihar, District Balaghat, shall be binding on all the Authorities as well as petitioner," it said.

If the petitioner or his authorised person fails to participate in the spot inspection, then the petitioner shall not have any right to claim that the spot inspection was carried out in the absence of him or his authorised person, the judge said.

If the petitioner has any objection to the spot inspection, then he shall file it before the SDO within three days from the spot inspection, the court said.

“The SDO, Baihar, District Balaghat shall decide the show cause notice after hearing the petitioner within a period of 15 days from the date of filing of spot inspection report,” the judge ordered.

If the application for supply of enquiry report or for carrying out the spot inspection is not made within 15 days from “today”, then the court’s observations shall automatically lose their effect, Justice Ahluwalia said.

Hooda’s counsel submitted that the show-cause notice was issued on June 18 and the actor was directed to file his response the next day, as per the order.

“It is submitted that SDO, Baihar, District Balaghat might have passed the final order and in that case, it may be observed that petitioner shall be free to prefer an appeal,” it read.

In his petition, Hooda urged the court to quash the show-notice of June 18 and restrain the authorities from taking coercive actions against him.

Government Advocate Mohan Sausarkar called the petition premature saying no order against the interest of petitioner has been passed and an opportunity has already been granted to him to put forth his case.

Rejecting the apprehension raised by the actor that the notice was issued to him to “gain cheap popularity”, he called it “baseless”.

“Action shall be taken strictly in accordance with the law without any extraneous considerations,” he submitted.

The Fukrey stars welcomed their first child on July 16. However, the couple made the announcement on Thursday, July 18.

In the joint statement, they said, "We are tickled pink with joy to announce the arrival of a healthy baby girl on 16.07.24! Our families are overjoyed, and we thank our well-wishers for their love and blessings! Love, Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal."

Earlier this year, Richa and Ali announced the news about pregnancy in a post that read, “1+1=3.” They captioned it, "A tiny heartbeat is the loudest sound in our world.”

Bad Newz Twitter Review: Disappointed netizens hail Vicky Kaushal's performance

The Boss is officially a billionaire, Forbes said Friday, estimating that Bruce Springsteen is conservatively worth $1.1 billion.

The guitar hero bard behind hits including "The River" has solidified much of his wealth in recent years, the financial outlet indicated, in no small part due to a blockbuster sale in 2021 of his music catalogue to Sony for an estimated half-a-billion dollars.

The deal followed his wildly successful Broadway show run. Now, Springsteen is on a global tour currently set to run through 2025.

According to industry tracker Pollstar, in 2023 Springsteen sold more than 1.6 million concert tickets, raking in $380 million in revenue.

And the 74-year-old "Dancing in the Dark" singer shows no signs of slowing down.

For decades the "Jungleland" songwriter has penned music that focuses a sentimental lens on underdogs and the working class -- and he's sold 140 million albums globally, placing him among the all-time bestselling musicians ever.

A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee with 20 Grammys and an Oscar to his name, Springsteen is also set to be the subject of a forthcoming biopic, with Jeremy Allen White of "The Bear" fame slated to play him.

His marathon shows are the stuff of legend, with the longest clocking in at more than four hours, a performance he pulled off in Helsinki in 2012.

Other industry heavyweights who have hit the billionaire mark include Rihanna, Jay-Z and Taylor Swift.
