Chelsea put a tumultuous few days behind them and a smile back on manager <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Maurizio+Sarri">Maurizio Sarri</a>'s face as they revived their top-four hopes with a 2-0 victory over stuttering Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Sarri has been under the immense pressure of late after his side's poor form and it seemed he was losing control at Wembley on Sunday when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted at the end of extra time against Manchester City.

Arrizabalaga was dropped by Sarri for the visit of third-placed Tottenham with Willy Caballero taking his place -- a move that could have backfired on the Italian.

As it turned out, Caballero did not have much to do and it was Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris who became the fall guy.

First he was beaten from a tight angle by Pedro in the 57th minute and then he was jointly culpable in a comical own goal by Kieran Trippier late on.

From being talked about as title contenders a few days ago Tottenham have lost two league games in a row and now have the pack closing in below them in the battle for a top-four finish.

Chelsea remained in sixth spot, three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game less.

Tottenham are four ahead of Arsenal who they host on Saturday, and five in front of Manchester United.

Arrizabalaga's antics had overshadowed what was an impressive display by Chelsea against Manchester City when they were beaten in a penalty shoot-out.

Sarri said dropping him was a "message to the group" and it clearly hit home as Chelsea's players put in a shift.

"The performance was in line with the last one and fortunately the result was different -- but the performance was very similar to the one against Man City," Sarri said.

"I was sure my relationship with my players is really very good and in the last month better."

Chelsea began at a high-tempo and Gonzalo Higuain twice went close to giving them the lead -- first with a sliced shot against the post and then with a curler wide.

Tottenham's Harry Kane struggled to make an impression, letting his frustration boil over at one point.

Harry Winks did go close to giving Spurs the lead with a dipping shot against the crossbar.

But Tottenham lacked their usual conviction in attack and they fell behind when Pedro turned inside Toby Alderweireld before shooting past Lloris from an unpromising angle.

Pedro then showed his defensive qualities with a great tackle on Christian Eriksen as the Dane wriggled through.

Yet any hope of a Tottenham comeback was eradicated when Trippier and Lloris failed to communicate and Trippier's attempted back pass rolled into an unguarded net.

Tottenham did not have a shot on target and after Saturday's defeat at Burnley suddenly look vulnerable.

"It wasn't a great game to watch. Of course very, very disappointed but we move on," Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "Two games and two defeats but now it's about being calm."

Kepa Arrizabalaga dropped as Chelsea beat Tottenham 2-0

The English Football Association (FA) has charged Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino with improper conduct for confronting the referee after Saturday's shock 2-1 Premier League defeat at Burnley.

Defeat dented third-placed Tottenham's title hopes and Pochettino appeared to vent his frustration at referee Mike Dean in a furious confrontation.

"It is alleged the Tottenham Hotspur manager's language and/or behaviour at the end of the fixture - both on the pitch and in or around the tunnel area - amounted to improper conduct," the FA said in a statement.

Pochettino was charged for two breaches of the FA's Rule E3 which concerns general behaviour and faces the prospect of a fine or a touchline ban.

"I think I am going to accept everything that can happen from the FA. The thing happened on the pitch and I hope that it's not going (any) further," he said on Saturday.

The Argentine has until 1800 GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge.

Harry Kane scored on his return from injury for Tottenham but his side fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Burnley, which severely dented their Premier League title hopes on Saturday.

Ashley Barnes' 83rd minute winner for Burnley, after Kane had cancelled out Chris Woods' opener, extended their unbeaten run to eight games and moved them up to 13th place in the league with one of their best results since returning to the top flight.

But for third-placed Spurs, who trail leaders Manchester City and Liverpool by five points, this may prove to be a loss that leaves them with too much ground to make up.

At an unseasonably sun-splashed Turf Moor, Kane returned to the Spurs line-up for the first time since suffering an ankle injury against Manchester United on Jan. 13 with England manager Gareth Southgate watching from the stands.

But he will have left East Lancashire also impressed by Burnley central defensive pair of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee who kept the England captain and the Spurs attack well under control.

Spurs made a slow start to the lunchtime kick-off game and it was not until the 16th minute that they threatened when Kane worked some space for himself, on the edge of the penalty area, but his left-foot effort was comfortably wide of Tom Heaton’s post.

Burnley were harrying and closing down well in midfield, with Ashley Westwood and Jack Cork particularly busy, and Spurs struggled to find their rhythm or any real openings for their captain.

Barnes went close to an opener in the 33rd, Jeff Hendrick pulling the ball back and the Burnley striker’s first time effort flashed just over the bar. The effort would surely have impressed the watching Austrian national team coach Franco Foda, given Barnes’ eligibility for the country through his paternal grandmother.

Burnley’s disciplined defending ensured the teams went in level at the break but four minutes after the resumption, Kane fired another warning, a dangerously dipping and swerving shot from 30 metres out bringing out the best in Heaton.

Burnley took the lead in the 57th minute with a glancing header by Wood, who rose ahead of Juan Foyth to angle in a Dwight McNeil corner.

Spurs believed the corner should not have been awarded but they responded positively.

Eight minutes later Kane, who had looked a little rusty, ran on to a quick throw-in from Danny Rose, got behind Mee and slipped the ball past Heaton.

Burnley were angered that Rose had taken the throw-in several metres ahead of the spot were the ball went out of play but their protests were in vain.

The Clarets, who have been in or around the relegation zone for most of the season, grabbed the winner though when substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson found Barnes at the back post and the striker fired in his fourth goal in as many games.

Harry Kane scores on return but Spurs fall at Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier has hailed their ability to grind out results in recent weeks as they continue to juggle domestic and European commitments without his fellow England internationals, Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Injuries to top scorer Kane and playmaker Alli, along with Son Heung-min's absence due to Asian Cup duty, meant the club's squad-depth was exposed during losses to Chelsea and Crystal Palace which ended their domestic cup campaigns last month.

But four straight Premier League victories have kept Spurs in the title race at this stage for a fourth consecutive season, while a 3-0 home win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last-16 first-leg has boosted their hopes of progressing.

"The past few weeks have been very good," England full-back Tripper told Sky Sports on Saturday.

"We could have played a lot better, we all know that, but the results are the most important thing.

"We've had a few injuries recently and the people that have stepped in have done really well."

Trippier has credited Son's purple patch in front of goal for Tottenham's resurgence, with the South Korean scoring four times in as many appearances since returning from playing for South Korea in a third tournament since the end of last season.

Son has now scored 16 goals in all competitions -- 11 in his last 12 matches -- and Spurs have won whenever the forward has found the net this season.

"If you look at Son, he's played in three major tournaments this season and he still looks fresh," added Trippier.

"He's come back and scored goals and topped it off with the result the other night which was amazing."

Spurs, currently third in the league five points behind the pacesetters Liverpool with 12 games left, next visit 15th-placed Burnley on February 23.

Tottenham's fighting spirit delights Kieran Trippier

Tottenham Hotspur still have work to do to reach the next round of the Champions League despite a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/vertonghen-shines-as-tottenham-cruise-past-dortmund-3-0-197303">convincing 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund</a> in their last-16 first leg on Wednesday, said coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham stunned the Germans with a goal two minutes after halftime from Korean forward Son Heung-min and struck twice late in the game through Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen, who was deployed in an unusual left wing back role, and substitute Fernando Llorente.

"It is a massive, massive performance and effort from my players," Pochettino told reporters.

"My players are heroes. They deserve a lot of praise because their effort this season is amazing.

"It is only the first half of the tie -- 3-0 is a very good result, but we must go to Dortmund with the idea of winning. It is a very good result but there is a lot of work to do."

The second leg is in Germany on March 5.

Tottenham were on the backfoot in the first half against the Bundesliga leaders, who had conceded only two goals in the entire group stage and had the better scoring chances.

The Argentine coach said he had to talk to his players at halftime to discuss ways of slowing their opponents down, with Dortmund's Jadon Sancho wreaking havoc down the wing.

"I would not say the team were nervous but the second half was much better. At halftime we showed them a few situations that could have been different," Pochettino said.

"We tried to help the team make the right decisions and perform in the best way. You need some luck, too. For me it is only the first leg, the first half but it is a very good result."

The result equalled Dortmund's heaviest away defeat in the Champions League.

The Germans also suffered a morale-sapping 3-3 draw against Hoffenheim last week in the Bundesliga after leading 3-0 and were also eliminated from the German Cup by Werder Bremen on penalties.

"We played well in the first half, had a couple of chances, We defended really well and played well going forward," Dortmund coach Lucien Favre said.

"In the start of the second half we gave it away. It was a gift. After that we tried to play a bit too hastily and it was very, very difficult for us. After the second goal it was harder to hold on to the ball and create chances."

For Favre and his players it is now back to the drawing board.

"There are periods of a season when things aren't top, top, top. It is what it is. We need to analyse and work hard to avoid and correct these errors."

Still work to do despite 3-0 win, says Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino

Defender Jan Vertonghen scored once and set up another goal for Son Heung-min as Tottenham Hotspur thumped Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday to give them the clear edge following the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.

Tottenham looked unfazed by the absence of injured captain Harry Kane and Dele Alli, scoring all three goals in a strong second half to take control of the tie and leave the Germans on the brink of a European exit.

Belgian Vertonghen notched his first goal in the Champions League with a well-timed volley in the 83rd minute after he had set up forward Son for a 47th minute lead. Substitute Fernando Llorente grabbed their third in the 86th, two minutes after coming on.

That was Son's ninth goal against Dortmund in 11 matches, with the South Korean, who played in the Bundesliga from 2010-15, having also scored twice in the competition's group stage last season.

"It was a fantastic second half," Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino told reporters. "The first half was difficult. It was a difficult game from the beginning.

"In the first half we played a little - not nervously - but not with the confidence. The second half was very, very good.

"There is still work to do."

Bundesliga leaders Dortmund, eliminated from the German Cup last week, were nowhere to be seen in the second half, with speedy teenager Jadon Sancho given no space to operate after the break. The return leg is on March 5.

"The first goal rattled us," Dortmund's Mario Goetze told reporters. "And then the double strike towards the end killed us off. We were good in the first half but this is very bitter. We now need to get back on track."

Before Wednesday, Tottenham had never won a home match in the knockout stage of the competition and Lucas Moura came close with a fine shot in the seventh minute.

Dortmund, themselves missing injured captain Marco Reus and top striker Paco Alcacer, gradually took control and had the better chances in the first half with Christian Pulisic firing onto keeper Hugo Lloris and the Frenchman saving a point-blank header from Dan-Axel Zagadou.

But the hosts changed the course of the game two minutes after the restart, pouncing on a defensive error and with Vertonghen whipping in a cross for Son, who has kept on scoring in Kane's absence, to tap in.

Dortmund, who had conceded just two goals in the group stage, tried to recover but found no way past the disciplined Tottenham backline.

They also looked to be running out of steam when Tottenham scored twice late in the game.

Vertonghen timed his run to perfection in the 83rd to kill off the game and Llorente gave them a big advantage for the second leg.

Champions League: Vertonghen shines as Tottenham cruise past Dortmund 3-0

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said on Tuesday (February 12) that he believes his side can beat any team they face.

Spurs face German league leaders Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, but despite injuries to Harry Kane and Deli Alli the Argentinian is confident his side can get a positive result.

Spurs have kept pace in the Premier League without Kane and Alli and currently lie in third place, five points behind league leaders Manchester City and second-placed Liverpool.

Pochettino's side looked to be heading out of the Champions League after taking just one point from their first three group stage games, however, wins over PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan followed by a draw at Barcelona were enough to see them qualify for the knockout stages in second place.

Last season Spurs went out at the same stage to Juventus after losing at home following a draw in Turin, but Pochettino said that game will have no bearing on tomorrow at Wembley, where defender Jan Vertonghen expects a packed stadium will be right behind the home side.

Tottenham get ready for Dortmund Champions League test

Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-Min scored his second goal in four days as the London side eventually saw off battling Newcastle United 1-0 at Wembley and leapfrogged Manchester City into second place in the Premier League.

Just when it looked like Spurs might be heading for their first draw of the season, Son fired a hopeful shot from outside the area which somehow crept under goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to take them within four points of Liverpool who play on Monday.

It was Son's ninth goal in his past 10 appearances for Tottenham and a cruel blow for Newcastle who looked to have done enough to earn a point before the keeper's howler.

Spurs missed a series of chances with Lucas Moura putting a straightforward header wide from six yards, Erik Lamela heading on to the post and Christian Eriksen's flick somehow hooked off the line by Fabian Schar as Newcastle rode their luck.

But Mauricio Pochettino's side had twice grabbed late winners in their previous league games with Fulham and Watford and Son got lucky when the chance finally came his way.

Newcastle, with record signing Miguel Almiron ineligible, had their moments on the breakaway with Salomon Rondon also heading on to a post. But in the end it was a familiar outcome for the Geordies, who have not won at Wembley since 1955.

Son Heung-Min strikes late as Tottenham beat Newcastle United to go second

Mauricio Pochettino is disappointed by Tottenham Hotspur's failure to sign any players in the January transfer window but the manager says his team will keep fighting to finish as high up the table as they can.

Spurs are the first team in the Premier League era not to sign a player in consecutive transfer windows but despite the lack of fresh faces they sit behind only Liverpool and Manchester City ahead of Saturday's home game against Newcastle United.

"Of course I wanted to strengthen the squad but if we cannot sign, I need to stick with the project of the club," Pochettino told his weekly news conference.

"Of course (I am) disappointed because we are in a very good position and maybe with a help from some players we can remove the excuse that we are not a real contender.

"But we are close ... and we will fight to the end to be as high as we can."

Spurs were linked with a move for Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi on transfer deadline day, but the 25-year-old joined Crystal Palace on loan in a deal announced after the window closed on Thursday.

Pochettino, who declined to comment on Batshuayi, said he would allow Dutch striker Vincent Janssen back into the first team after the player failed to secure a move away.

Janssen, who joined Spurs in 2016, had been training with the under-23 side.

"He is going to be involved with the first team from today, like another player with chances to be involved or play" Pochettino said.

"Before it was clear, he wanted to leave and was not in our plan. Now when you cannot achieve what you want, it's important for him to feel again he can be helpful."

Mauricio Pochettino is disappointed by Tottenham Hotspur's failure to sign any players in the January transfer window but the manager says his team will keep fighting to finish as high up the table as they can.

Tottenham Hotspur secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over lowly London rivals West Ham United thanks to a deft first-half finish from Erik Lamela in their Premier League clash on Saturday.

The victory took Spurs into the top four with Argentine Lamela playing a starring role as he gave the visitors the lead just before the break with a glancing header into the top corner after a dribble and cross by Moussa Sissoko from the right.

Spurs, who have continued their best ever start to a Premier League season, also had keeper Hugo Lloris to thank after he denied West Ham's livewire Austria striker Marko Arnautovic on three occasions, including a vital save in stoppage time.

"Hugo was fantastic. It was an amazing victory for us with three points that keep us in a very good position," relieved Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino told reporters.

"...we maybe deserved to go into halftime with one or two more goals. In the end we suffered a little bit. When it's a derby it's so competitive and emotional."

Tottenham certainly had the best of the first half and could have added to their score before the interval at a packed London Stadium but Colombian central defender Davinson Sanchez's low shot was well blocked by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The home side started the second period brightly and almost equalised but Arnautovic's fine header from Aaron Cresswell's cross was superbly tipped over the bar by Lloris.

West Ham kept pressing and Arnautovic again tested Lloris on the hour with a rasping low drive before bringing another fine same from the France international in added time but the home side could not find a way through the Spurs defence.

The win takes Tottenham up to provisional third place with 21 points from nine games before Saturday's late match, while struggling West Ham remain in 15th spot on seven points.

Lamela goal edges Spurs to derby win at West Ham

Lionel Messi lifted Barcelona out of their recent slump with a magical display as his side beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in a thrilling Champions League Group B clash on Wednesday.

The Argentine maestro scored two goals to take his Champions League haul to 105, was the instigator in two others and was twice denied by the woodwork as he lit up Wembley Stadium.

Messi, 31, was applauded off by both sets of fans at the end of an absorbing contest that kept Barca at the top of the group and Tottenham in trouble after two defeats.

Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic scored in clinical fashion as Barcelona went in 2-0 ahead at halftime.

But Barcelona needed Messi at his best to repel a tenacious Spurs fightback as Harry Kane and Erik Lamela gave the hosts hope.

Only when Messi struck his second in stoppage-time could Barca coach Ernesto Valverde breathe a little easier.

Barcelona, without a win in their last three La Liga games, were supposed to be vulnerable but on a pitch baring the scars of British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua's fight against Alexander Povetkin they took only two minutes to land a blow straight in the solar plexus.

Tottenham allowed Messi time and space to curl a pass to Jordi Alba on the left and with keeper Hugo Lloris, back from injury, charging out of his goal Alba cut the ball back to Coutinho who drilled home through a gaggle of defenders.

The hosts responded with Kane firing in a shot that did not have enough venom to worry Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Messi opened up Tottenham again in the 28th minute. His floated pass was chested down by Luis Suarez to Coutinho whose volley sliced up in the air before the quick-thinking Brazilian hooked the ball back to Rakitic who rifled a picture-perfect right-foot volley in off the post from 25 yards.

Messi ran riot at the start of the second half, twice teasing the Spurs defence before thudding shots against Lloris's right-hand post.

Tottenham capitalised on their good fortune and Kane halved the deficit in the 52nd minute with a clinical finish.

Messi shook his head in disbelief but he silenced the home crowd again -- this time side-footing inside the post from Alba's cross to finish a flowing move he had started.

There was no let-up in the furious pace and after Kane worked hard to win the ball, Lamela gave Spurs another lifeline when his 66th-minute shot flicked off Clement Lenglet and spun past Ter Stegen.

A gallant Tottenham side, missing the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen, swarmed forward looking for a point that had earlier seemed inconceivable.

They left yawning gaps at the back, though, and Messi finally ended their resistance when he struck again in stoppage time.

Champions League: Maestro Messi lights up Wembley as Barcelona sink Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur moved into fourth place in the Premier League with a 2-0 win at bottom club Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

But Spurs, who face Barcelona on Wednesday in the Champions League, have more injury concerns, with defender Jan Vertonghen and midfielder Mousa Dembele both replaced at half-time.

Attacking midfielder Dele Alli missed the trip to Yorkshire, also suffering from a hamstring injury, and while Tottenham never looked in real danger at Huddersfield, the injuries will be a blow to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Kane, who scored twice in the corresponding fixture last season, opened the scoring in the 25th minute, rising well to angle home a header from the familiar source of a pinpoint Kieran Trippier corner.

Nine minutes later the England international doubled the lead, this time from the penalty spot after Danny Rose went down under a challenge from Florent Hadergjonaj after a clever exchange with Son Heung-min.

It was a decision which riled the home crowd but while there was little contact on Rose, Hadergjonaj paid the price for tugging the shirt of the Spurs wing back.

Huddersfield striker Laurent Depoitre rattled the woodwork with a volley just before the break and Terriers' substitute Isaac Mbenza brought a fine save out of Paulo Gazzaniga, which sparked some late pressure from the home side.

The Yorkshire crowd roared their side on until the end but for all their immense effort, their predictable long balls caused little trouble for Tottenham's defence.

"A very good win, very pleased. The attitude was fantastic," said Pochettino.

"It was a tough game against a team desperate to win. They were helped by their unbelievable fans, among the best I have found in England. Which is why we are so pleased to have three more points in the table today," he said.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner, whose team have just two points, said the response of the fans showed that his team were not far away from getting positive results.

"I think everyone who saw this game obviously saw that my team performed on a very good level," said the German.

"If you have such an incredible atmosphere in the stadium after a defeat ... the players left everything on the grass -- without any reward that’s true – but if you perform consistently … the reward will come."

Harry Kane double at Huddersfield sends Spurs fourth

Tottenham Hotspur must quickly get over the disappointment of the Premier League defeat at Arsenal by getting a morale-boosting victory at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday, manager Mauricio Pochettino has said.

Spurs&#39; loss at the Emirates on Saturday dropped them to fourth in the table, 11 points behind league leaders Manchester City, and extended their woeful away record against fellow top-six teams to one win in 17 games.

Tottenham, who are top of their Champions League group, have already sealed progression to the knockout stages and Pochettino believes their penultimate group match against a struggling Dortmund is the perfect opportunity to get a much-needed win.

&quot; Now we have to keep going and get ready for Borussia Dortmund. Okay, we&#39;re already in the next stage of the competition but we want to win and try to change the feeling we have from the weekend,&quot; Pochettino told the club&#39;s website. (www.tottenhamhotspur.com)

&quot;It&#39;s always important to compete and to be focused on the next game and when you lose, it&#39;s important to play as soon as possible to change that feeling.&quot;

Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen echoed his manager&#39;s words and says the Dortmund game allows Spurs&#39; players to show their true capabilities after an underwhelming outing against Arsenal.

&quot;It&#39;s probably good that we have a game so quickly after the derby and you can have a bit of revenge -- you can show the world that you are a better than what you saw on Saturday,&quot; Eriksen told reporters.

Tottenham was favored to win the north London derby and was criticised on multiple fronts after the poor showing but Pochettino has welcomed the increased expectations saying it showed the club&#39;s improvement during his reign.

&quot; The expectation now is that we win the Champions League and Premier League and I am happy with the pressure and the criticism,&quot; Pochettino added.

&quot;It means people expect more of us. We know very well we have improved in every single aspect.&quot;
