The Rings of Power Plot</h2>

<p>Season 2 opens with a prelude&nbsp;of sorts where viewers are taken back in time to Second Age, where Sauron escapes a massacre led by Adar and the Orcs. We know that Sauron can take up any shape and form and from murky black water, Sauron transforms into the very human Helbrand (Charlie Vickers) and eventually rescues Galadriel from the stormy seas. With the prelude establishing how dubious and dangerous Sauron is, the season then goes on to narrate Sauron's ability to influence and seek out the rings that can destroy Middle-Earth and lead to utter darkness and doom.&nbsp;<br />

The rings become the bone of contention between friends Galadriel and Elrond (Robert Aramayo). The high king of the Elves, Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker), has already reprimanded Galadriel for not being careful about Halbrand and his real identity. While Elrond now wants the rings to be destroyed since Sauron is out there seeking them, Galadriel disagrees and wants to use the rings to fight Sauron.&nbsp;<br />

Meanwhile, Nori (Markella Kavenagh), Poppy (Megan Richards),&nbsp;and the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) continue their journey minus the rest of the Harfoot, and the Stranger's identity is only revealed near the end of the series. Their friendship and bond, however, is one of the brightest parts of The Rings Of Power. It was one of my favourite tracks in the first season and it remains so in the second season.&nbsp;</p>

It does take time to warm up though, much like the first season. Considering the show has multiple characters and plot lines, it takes a while to get used to the premise, even if you have followed the series from the first season.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the world of darkness, creators Patrick McKay and John D&nbsp;Payne masterfully depict a beautiful relationship between Nori and the Stranger, a mysterious figure possessing incredible powers, who falls from the sky. Even though the Stranger knows nothing about himself, he saves the Harfoots in the face of danger. Not only does the trust between the young girl and the stranger strengthen, but the Harfoot tribe also decides to send Nori to take care of him as he sets out to save the world. However, the Stranger’s identity remains a mystery throughout the entire season.</p>

But I did have an inkling, if I’m honest with you. My last two auditions were [reading lines from Richard III], and we know he’s not the greatest guy in the world. And then the other audition lines were from Paradise Lost, where you’re literally giving the speech as Satan. So that gave me an inkling that there was something up. So I was definitely suspicious, but it wasn’t confirmed until right before we started filming the third episode. "</p>

But the user ratings on the site and on IMDB are less than flattering. But this is likely not due to a general consensus among the viewers. On the contrary, the dismal ratings are a result of the ever-prevalent phenomena called 'review-bombing' by a small minority of fans who are disgruntled about the show not exclusively being populated by white actors.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Tolkien, the man behind 'The Lord of the Rings'</h2>

<p>English author JRR Tolkien is remembered as the father of fantasy fiction. His landmark works 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' pretty much made the fantasy genre what it is today. Among the authors he influenced are JK Rowling and George &nbsp;RR Martin. With Middle-earth, the setting of his stories, Tolkien created a detailed world full of multiple races, locations, and even myths -- basing much of it on Norse mythology. And not just that, Tolkien created entire languages with their own grammar and syntax -- a task possible because he was also a noted philologist.</p>

<p>For all his incredible achievements, Tolkien's works were said to be suffused with conscious or unconsciously racist. For instance, the elves in his writings were said to be wisest and fairest of all beings, the most perfect creations of Eru Ilúvatar. They were also literally the fairest. They were also morally perfect. The men, who were not so fair, were prone to evil. Same with dwarves, who many saw as a representation of the "gold-digging" trope that has been seen in fiction as a thinly-veiled reference to Jews. But races with darker skin, like orcs, were wholly evil and corrupt and violent, and had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.</p>

<p>But another school of thought, towards which I incline, argues that in Tolkien's stories characters were more defined by class rather than literal races. Also, that Tolkien at least did not intend racist divisions of races is illustrated by the fact that Tolkien could not decide on the origin of orcs. Were they an actual race? An artificial creation? We don't know, but no origin of orcs is 'canon'. It is said that Tolkien's worldview, derived from catholicism, could not fathom beings who did not have free will (if they were solely created to commit evil deeds, for instance). But neither could hundreds and thousands of them could choose to be evil, could they? Thus, Tolkien remained unable to solve the orc dilemma.</p>

<h2>Tolkien's letter to a German publisher asking for evidence that he is not a jew</h2>

<p>Even the harshest of Tolkien critics would agree that the themes of his stories did not align with a lot of xenophobic prominent Europeans of that time, including the British. That he was implacably against Nazism can be gleaned from a letter he sent to a German publisher who wanted to ensure Tolkien was not a jew.</p>

<p>He responded by saying, "Thank you for your letter. I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject — which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. <p>'The Rings of Power' does not specifically adapt any of Tolkien's works. Instead, it expands upon the lore and world-building he did in the appendices attached 'The Lord of the Rings'. As the subtitle of this JD Payne and Patrick McKay creation suggests, the series is based on the forging of Rings of Power, and is thus set during the Second Age when Sauron was an individual and not a flaming eye he became in the Third Age. 'The Lord of the Rings', on the other hand, and Peter Jackson's immensely successful and multiple Academy Award-winning trilogy of movies, centred around the War of the Ring, when Frodo and his allies took on the might of the Dark Lord and destroyed the One Ring.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The Rings of Power' has done the unpardonable sin of casting actors of colour in a few roles instead of white. It is another matter that a majority of the actors are still white. The biggest controversy has been generated by Ismael Cruz Córdova's Arondir, a silvan elf. Certainly, Tolkien was a man of his time and had prejudices that were common then. But he was still progressive for his time as he did not support the Nazism that many of his countrymen were doing. If were alive today his stories will surely be more diverse to represent the demographics in western countries.</p>

Admittedly, I was not a fan of the source material in that case, something that clearly coloured my opinion. But I am a fan of JRR Tolkien's writings, something of a 'Tolkienist' actually. Beginning with 'The Hobbit' at the age of 13, I have read pretty much every publicly available word the author wrote. And Amazon, due to the Tolkien fanboi that Jeff Bezos is, put an unheard of $1.25 billion to bring this series into existence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I was cautiously optimistic and sort of excited. Something THAT expensive cannot be all bad, right? And it really isn't. In fact, thus far, I unadulteratedly love 'The Rings of Power'. It is not flawless, and the purist in me screamed every time the show diverged from the lore -- which is all too frequent -- but the showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay and their team of writers have done something interesting with the bits and pieces provided by Tolkien in the appendices.&nbsp;</p>

Adapting the main 'LotR' would have been redundant anyway, considering how big of an impact the Jackson movies had. What Amazon did get for those $250 million was everything else, which did not amount to much -- or at least that is what one would think. The Second Age could be exploited by the writers and how Sauron first became the Dark Lord after his former master Morgoth, the Lucifer of Middle-earth, was defeated. And this, if done well, could be a gripping story indeed. And it is.</p>

<p>Morgoth and Sauron were defeated. While Morgoth was banished to the Timeless Void, his evil endures. And his chief lieutenant Sauron escaped. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) lost her brother to that evil and believes Sauron still exists and is orchestrating his return. Her friend, Elrond (Robert Aramayo), is sympathetic but disagrees, wanting her to hang up her sword and sail to Undying Lands.</p>

<p>Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) is a silvan elf and one among a group of soldiers tasked with watching over a human village and making sure they do not indulge in any devilry (like joining forces with Sauron). Now it is his time to go back, but he is reluctant, for he has fallen in love with a human woman, a local healer Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi), something that is forbidden among both humans and elves.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The Rings of Power' world-building is intimate and expansive at the same time. Even the newbies to the franchise should not have any problem following the events of the show. The major characters, a few of which (Galadriel and Elrond) would be familiar to the fans of the film trilogy, are all sketched with impressive detail. The production quality and filming in actual locations lend a sense of realness to a story that, ironically enough, comes under fantasy.</p>

There are also familiar vistas showcasing landscapes, hills, valleys, rivers, and faithful recreations of locations like Lindon -- every single frame looks stunning. The visual aspect of Middle-earth is an important aspect and the creators certainly recognised that. The aesthetic is nicely redolent of 'LotR' trilogy and also feels like its own thing.&nbsp;</p>
