Ashes History: The Ashes is a Test match series played between England and Australia, the oldest rivals in cricket. They play for a small urn which stayed at the Marylebone Cricket Club at the Lord's Cricket Ground and then shifted to the museum. Why is England vs Australia Test Series called The Ashes? The term 'Ashes' was born in 1882, when Australia defeated England's cricket team for the first time on their home soil. After England's defeat, the Sporting Times declared the death of English Cricket in a mock obituary. It read, "In Affectionate Remembrance of English cricket, which died at The Oval on 29 August 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances, RIP. NB – the body will be cremated, and the ashes taken to Australia." Later, the English media called England's next tour to Australia the quest to regain the ashes. During the 1882-23 tour, a group of Melbourne women presented a tiny terracotta urn to the English Captain Ivo Bligh, which allegedly contained the ashes of some cricket item. After Bligh's death, his wife presented the urn to the MCC. Before it was moved to the museum in 1953, the small urn resided in the Long Room. In 1998, the MCC commissioned a trophy that has been played for in the series between Australia and England. The trophy is a larger replica of the urn. In 1903, Pelham Warner, former captain of the England cricket team, wrote a book named How We Recovered The Ashes. History of The Ashes: Here’s all you need to know about Test cricket’s oldest rivalry ahead of Ashes 2023

The International Cricket Council (ICC), amid the protest by Just Stop Oil activists at the sporting events in the UK, has been preparing a back-up pitch at the Oval in London. The ground is set to host the World Test Championship (WTC) Final from June 7, Wednesday, between India and Australia.

The move from the ICC comes as a guard to a worst-case scenario where the game and the strip used could be targetted by the activists.

Just Stop Oil is a coalition of environmental groups which are fighting to raise awareness about climate change as various sporting events in the UK. There protests have hit the World Snooker Championship and Premier League football to name a few. The ICC, in case the disruption hits, wants to guard the pitch which has been tended over the days for the WTC Final and decided to prepare a back-up pitch.

The protesting group caused a delay to England's team bus last week while they were en route stadium on the first morning of the one-off Test against Ireland. Australia, one of the two WTC finalists, also faced a delay after being stuck in traffic on Monday morning while traveling to the Oval for training.

The ICC has also altered its playing conditions for the final by adding a clause for the use of another pitch in case the one is use gets damaged or is dangerous to play on. The ICC, however, will assess the existing pitch first to see if the repairs can be done and the match can get started from the point it was stopped without affecting any of the participating teams.

The new pitch will be used only if the original one can't be repaired. Although, if it is not possible to use the substitute pitch as well, the match will then be abandoned and would be deemed a no-result.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) will be shortened by an hour starting on July 26 of this year, according to the Education Testing Service (ETS). This reduces the examination time from three hours to two hours.

ETS stated in an official statement, “TOEFL to be shortened by an hour from July, candidates to get real-time notification of score status.”

The TOEFL iBT is regarded as an academic English communication test of the highest calibre that is widely regarded and recommended

The test will be reduced in duration from three to two hours by streamlining the test's instructions and navigation. In place of the old autonomous writing job, condensed reading part, and test questions without grades, a new "writing for an academic discussion" task will be added.

“Those taking English language proficiency test TOEFL will now know official score release date upon completion of exam," ETS said.

Google confirmed on Wednesday (February 22) that the search giant was rolling out tests that would impede attempts of some Canadian users to access news content. Reuters reported that Google said that these tests were a potential response to Canada's online news bill. The "Online News Act" bill was introduced by Justin Trudeau's Liberal government in April. The bill lays out rules to force platforms like Google, Facebook and others to negotiate deals with news publishers for their content.

"We're briefly testing potential product responses to Bill C-18 that impact a very small percentage of Canadian users. We run thousands of tests each year to assess any potential changes to Search," said Google as quoted by Reuters.

The company said that these tests are time-limited and will impact a random sampling of less than 4 per cent of users in Canada. It will "limit the visibility of Canadian and international news to varying degrees."

A spokeswoman for Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said Canadians will not be intimidated and called it disappointing that Google is borrowing from Meta's playbook.

"Canadians need to have access to quality, fact-based news at the local and national levels, and that’s why we introduced the Online News Act. Tech giants need to be more transparent and accountable to Canadians," the spokeswoman said.

Last year, Facebook had warned of blocking of some news content in Canada in response to concerns about legislation that would compel platforms to pay news publishers.

According to a report, a similar law in Australia, which led to brief shutdown of Facebook news feeds, has largely worked.

Under the G20 presidency, India is prepared to set the global agenda for the major economic powers while simultaneously placing a high priority on its own national security. A significant event occurred on 9 December when Indian and Chinese forces clashed along their disputed border in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Both sides suffered injuries, even though there were no casualties. The news caught the attention of everyone. The word "Agni" means fire, and this missile is India's appropriate retort to the Chinese across the border. Here are the 8 things you should know about Agni 5:

1. Genesis of Agni missiles

Agni missile development began in early 1980 under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP), which was led by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India and a key role in India's missile and space programmes.

2. Is India's Agni 5 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) ?

Agni 5 is not an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile but it is India’s closest contender for an ICBM. There have already been a number of Agni-5 missiles, with ranges ranging from 700 kilometres for Agni-1 to 5000 kilometres and beyond for Agni-5. The newest generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni P had a successful test by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in June of last year. It was an upgraded version of the missiles in the Agni class. The range of the canisterized missile Agni P is between 1,000 and 2,000 kilometres.

3. Agni-5 capabilities: How much area can Agni-5 destroy?

As a nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Agni 5 is capable of carrying, deploying, and detonating a nuclear warhead. The missile's range is approximately 5,000 kilometres. According to the Defence Ministry, the missile has a three-stage solid-fuel engine and can strike targets with a high degree of precision at distances up to 5,000 kilometres. As per several reports, Agni-5 can cover a range of even 8000kms. The missile reportedly weighs roughly 1500 kg in payload. The missile weighs around 50,000 kg. The missile can reach an exceptional Mach 24 speed which is 29,401 km/h. Agni 5 is road-mobile and can be transported by a truck and launched via a canister. The missile is can be equipped with the MIRV capable of carrying multiple warheads.

4. Can Agni-5 cover entire China?

According to multiple reports, Agni 5 can enter many parts of mainland China including Beijing. Some reports also suggests that Agni V can also reach parts of Africa and Europe and has a range of 8000 km. However, as per India's Defence Ministry, the missile has a range of about 5000 kms. ANI news agency citing sources said the missile has been made lighter by adding lighter composite material. This will enable the missile to go longer ranges.

5. Agni 5 successful test

Agni-V ballistic missile was fired on Thursday from Abdul Kalam Island in India's eastern Odisha state. Indian Navy ahead of the test issued a notification and declared the Bay of Bengal as a no-fly zone, as per reports. The last test of the missile was conducted in October 2021. This was the ninth test-firing of the Agni 5. The first time the missile was tested was in 2012.

6. Word 'Agni': The origin

The term Agni means "fire" in Sanskrit, and its meaning is understood in the context of Agni being one of the Panch Mahabhutas, the five basic elements. Others are Prithvi (Earth), Aapa (Water), Wayu (Air), Akash (Space).

7. No First Use

The successful test of Agni-5, according to the Indian Defense Ministry, is in accordance with India's policy of having "credible minimum deterrent," which supports the commitment to "No First Use." This comes days after Indian and Chinese troops clashed in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, an incident which became the topic of a heated debate in Indian Parliament.

8. India's Agni 5 vs. China's Dongfeng-26

India missile Agni 5 is now being compared with China's Dongfeng-26 (DF-26) which has an estimated range of over 5000 kms. DF-26, which is nicknamed as Guam Killer is also a nuclear-capable missile. The missile is named as it has the potential to reach the US base in Guam in Western Pacific.

Agni 5 Missile Test explained: India roars back at China after Tawang border clashes, the 8 things to know

Test by shakti

The latest test of India's existing cryogenic engine 'CE-20' adds more muscle to India's biggest and heaviest rocket, the LVM3 (earlier known as GSLV Mk3). The test has proven that the launch vehicle's payload capacity or ability to carry more cargo to space can be increased.

On request, an ISRO Official elaborated to WION about the major takeaways from the rocket engine test carried out by the Indian space agency on November 9.

The indigenously designed and developed LVM3 rocket has had a design load of carrying 4 tonnes to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) and almost 10 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). However, the rocket has so far, in five launches to date, not flown with a full payload.

In terms of the heaviest payloads carried by the LVM3 rocket, it had lifted 3.85 tonnes to GTO during Chandrayaan-2, India's second Lunar mission, and 5.8 tonnes to LEO, for the recent October-end commercial launch for 'OneWeb'. This means that the capability to lift more payload exists, but the vehicle has not yet had an opportunity to do so.

According to the ISRO Official, the latest test has further increased the design load of the LVM3 rocket. In layman's terms, the test has given ISRO the confidence to carry more payloads on LVM3 than the current limits.

"After this test, the design load of LVM3 to GTO is around 4.5 tonnes (up from 4 tons) and the design load to GTO is around 10.65 tonnes,” the ISRO official explained.

In terms of the engine being tested at a higher thrust, the official stated that it was good increase —-from the earlier 19 tonnes to 21.8 tonnes. The higher thrust is obtained by increasing the quantity of fuel being stored in the tanks and also by increasing the rate of flow of fuel to the engine.

"The propellant loading(fuel) was earlier 28 tonnes and now we are using 32 tonnes of fuel" the official added.

In order to increase the payload carrying capacity of the LVM3 rocket, ISRO is testing the CE-20 engine at higher thrusts and also working on developing a new Semi-cryogenic engine 'SC-120', which is meant to replace the existing L110 stage on the LVM3 rocket.

The vehicle has two solid 'S200' strap-on motors (burns solid fuel), 'L110' core-stage liquid booster (burns a combination of liquid fuels) and a 'C25' cryogenic upper stage (burns liquid hydrogen with liquid oxygen).

Shanghai University became the butt of jokes after asking its students to take the mandatory swimming test online before graduating. On May 15, the dean’s office at Shanghai University announced that undergraduates finishing their bachelor’s degrees who are due to participate in a 50-metre (164 feet) swimming test can be allowed to take it online from home in the wake of the city’s Covid outbreaks, reports South China Morning Post.

In China, students at some of the most prestigious universities are required to learn swimming before they graduate as it is considered a survival skill and improves physical fitness.

The move was made to "ensure that the graduation process proceeds smoothly", the now-deleted read that was screen-grabbed and widely circulated over social media.

To pass the swimming requirement this year, students must fill out an online "Basic Theory of Swimming" test by May 29, the notice said.

“The classes and facilities including the swimming pool at the university are suspended under the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown. To ensure the students can graduate, we decided to conduct the swimming test online,” an unnamed staff member from the dean’s office told the Chinese news outlet Jimu.

However, the announcement was met with ridicule and laughter after the notice was shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

"This is just embarrassing, coming from a reputable university. How can a theory test be the same as an actual lap in the pool?" one Weibo user commented.
