J&K: One militant killed as Police, terrorists exchange fire in Handwara

On a good day, it takes Mohammad less than three hours to drive from Ghazni to Kabul. But preparations for the hair-raising journey through Taliban-infested areas can take weeks.

Road trips are a dangerous, and often deadly, activity in Afghanistan.&nbsp;

Travellers run the gauntlet of Taliban checkpoints, fighting, robberies, kidnappings, and pressure-plate bombs targeting government officials and security forces.&nbsp;

The stretch of Highway 1 between the Afghan capital and the southeastern city of Ghazni -- which the Taliban stormed in August and still threaten -- is one of the most treacherous.&nbsp;

Spontaneous trips are out of the question, said Mohammad, who is in his 20s and a regular visitor to Kabul.

Mohammad, not his real name, asked AFP to use a pseudonym to avoid being identified by the Taliban.&nbsp;

He begins preparing for the journey at least two weeks before his planned departure, starting with growing out his beard, which he normally keeps short, to create a scruffier appearance.

He then starts working his contacts, calling trusted relatives and neighbours who ply the busy route for information about Taliban activity along the main artery connecting Kabul to the insurgent strongholds in the south.

"You have to be careful who you call because you could be sold out to the Taliban" by someone working for the militant group, he told AFP.&nbsp;

'Many reasons to worry'&nbsp;

On the day of his departure, Mohammad swaps his clean, well-ironed clothes for a dirty pyjama-like shalwar kameez to make himself look more like a villager and clears the call history on his mobile in case a phone number raises suspicion.

"You can't just jump into a car and come (to Kabul), not if you want to be on the safe side," he said.

Mohammad's most recent trip to Kabul was delayed for three days after he received warnings of Taliban disguised as Afghan soldiers manning checkpoints along the road.&nbsp;

The first thing Taliban militants check is a person's tazkira, or national identification document.&nbsp;

"If the tazkira is from Ghazni then you may be fine. If not, they might think that you are a member of the security forces from another province coming to Ghazni to fight," Mohammad said.&nbsp;

After registering to vote in the October 20 parliamentary election -- which the Taliban had vowed to attack and which was finally cancelled in Ghazni due to protests -- Mohammad carries a second tazkira that does not have a sticker identifying him as a voter.&nbsp;

"There are many reasons to be worried and anxious," Mohammad explained.

"Even if they don't kill you, they may keep you as a hostage and ask for a ransom. If they kept me for one night, my mother would not survive."&nbsp;

A one-way trip between Kabul and Ghazni costs Mohammad 250 afghanis (around $3) in a Toyota Corolla taxi, a ubiquitous model in Afghanistan that is often used as public transport. He tries to travel with drivers he knows.

He avoids travelling on Mondays and Wednesdays. Those are the days the Afghan army delivers supplies to its troops in the provinces and attacks along the highway are more likely, Mohammad said.

Thursday, the last day of the Afghan working week, is also a bad day to venture out of the city. Militants lie in wait for government employees as they leave Ghazni for the weekend.&nbsp;

Fear of death&nbsp;

Whenever possible, Mohammad said he travels with women wearing burqas, but not because he prefers their company.&nbsp;

In the deeply conservative society where physical contact between men and women in public is prohibited, female passengers can hide mobile phones and other sensitive items under their head-to-toe coverings without fear of the Taliban searching them.&nbsp;

Once on the open road, Mohammad remains vigilant.

He listens carefully to the phone conversations of the driver and other occupants for signs they are planning to give him, or someone else in the vehicle, up to the Taliban.

"Taliban spies use codes like 'I have brought the rooster that you asked for' or 'we found the yoghurt that you asked for'," he said.&nbsp;

An oncoming vehicle with lights blinking, a line of cars stopped on the highway, or no traffic at all are warning signs that something has happened up ahead. &nbsp;

"Fighting and ambushes are common. You have to accept that you might face it," Mohammad said.&nbsp;

Despite the risks, Kabul's alluring cafes and shopping malls make the nail-biting trip worthwhile, Mohammad said.

Even a few days in the heavily militarised and overcrowded city is "refreshing" and a relief from Ghazni, where he feels his "heart can burst from boredom".

But Mohammad does what he can to stay safe on his journey, even paying a few cents to a street beggar as he leaves the city in the hope the good deed will protect him.

"I still fear death," he said. "But I try to stay calm."

Highway to hell: Afghan travellers run gauntlet of Taliban violence

A key Pakistani cleric with close ties to the Afghan Taliban who was killed in the garrison city of Rawalpindi was buried Saturday as Prime Minister Imran Khan called for an investigation into the murder.

Maulana Sami Ul-Haq, dubbed the "Father of the Taliban", was stabbed to death by unknown intruders at his residence Friday night.

The cleric, who is in his 80s&nbsp; was buried in his hometown Akoda Khattak, around 115 kilometres (70 miles) northwest of Islamabad.

Thousands of people gathered for the funeral prayers guarded by dozens of police personnel while a bomb disposal squad cleared the graveyard before the cleric's body was brought for burial, an AFP reporter at the site said.

His seminary had produced some of the key leaders of the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban, something that the cleric and his associates would proudly tell visiting journalists.

The list of graduates written on the walls of the seminary includes the names of leaders of the Pakistani Taliban.

An investigation into the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007 revealed that the assassins had stayed at his seminary before travelling to Rawalpindi where Bhutto was killed.

The Afghan Taliban issued a statement terming his death "a great loss for the entire Islamic Ummah" (nation).

"He rendered unforgettable services and assistance to the oppressed Afghan nation against the Soviet and American invasions," the statement said.

Afghan envoys in Pakistan had reached out to him seeking his help in starting negotiations with the Afghan Taliban.

But analysts doubted if he had any sway with them.

"He did not had any influence on the Afghan Taliban but he supported their cause," analyst Rahimullah Yusufzai told AFP.

"Many of the leaders and fighters of the Afghan Taliban had studied at his madrassa," he said.

Pakistani media termed his death a blow to the Afghan peace process but Yusufzai doubted it, saying his death would have no impact on the talks as he was never part of any negotiations.

Social media users in Afghanistan termed him a "troublemaker".

"The Taliban have lost their father, now they are orphan," Bilal Noori, an Afghan, posted on Facebook.

His death was widely condemned in Pakistan by politicians and religious leaders, with the prime minister calling for an investigation into the murder.

In 2014, the cleric was a member of the negotiating committee from the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) -- who brokered a ceasefire with the government, although the talks later failed.

He twice held roles as a member of Pakistan's Senate.

Pakistan buries 'Father of Taliban' as PM orders probe of killing

A report by the Indian think tank Strategic Foresight Group (SFG) and Oxford University says&nbsp;there is the possibility that Mumbai terror attack mastermind and terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed could in the near future become Pakistan's prime minister.

The report,&nbsp;titled 'Humanity at Risk-Global Terror Threat Indicant', came up with the hypothetical scenario post-2020. It predicted that the dominance of terrorists and extremists could lead to attacks targeting India's political and financial systems with the "open support of the Pakistan military".&nbsp;

The report also predicted that extremist and religious political parties in Pakistan would become increasingly popular.

"Extremist and religious political parties in Pakistan (are) become increasingly popular. Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is able to build its party infrastructure and contest the federal elections successfully in alliance with other extremist groups and active unofficial support from the military. Pakistan [could] then elect Hafiz Saeed as the head of government," the report&nbsp;mentioned.

The report also placed Pakistan at the top of the list of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-responsible-for-three-times-the-terror-risk-to-humanity-than-syria-report-173753">countries that pose a threat</a> to "humanity" and "global peace".&nbsp;

The report goes on to warn about the threat of a full-scale war between India and Pakistan following Pakistan-sponsored terror attacks.

"LeT is able to build its party infrastructure and contest the federal elections successfully, in alliance with other extremist groups and active unofficial support from the military. Pakistan then elects LeT founder Hafiz Saeed as the head of government," it said.&nbsp;

The study also predicted that eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan, the two relatively lawless border areas between the two countries, could become a single breakaway Taliban state.&nbsp;

The report also predicted that al-Qaida would gain a foothold by co-opting other separatist and ethnic movements in Myanmar, Bangladesh and Thailand.&nbsp;

"The US summarily exits Afghanistan and Iraq under the leadership of a right-wing president inaugurated in January 2029, throwing those countries into major chaos. China's involvement in Afghanistan, specifically the attempt to play interlocutor with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, backfires. Incensed Pakistani and Afghan terror groups incite violence within China, thereby emboldening Uighur militants to launch a major attack in Beijing or Shanghai," the report said.

'Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed could become Pakistan PM'

Sexual violence and abductions continue to be used as weapons of war in armed conflict by non-state actors and terrorist organisations which disproportionately affect women, India has said as it asked the UN Security Council to sanction individuals and entities involved in gender-based violence.&nbsp;

The remarks by Paulomi Tripathi, First Secretary in the India's Permanent Mission here, came after UN chief Antonio Guterres reported a huge increase in such brutalities.&nbsp;

"Today, there is greater awareness about the centrality of meaningful participation of women in peace processes and incorporation of gender perspectives in UN's peace and security efforts," Tripathi said.

Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Friday endorsed the death sentences of 14 "hardcore terrorists" who were convicted by special military courts.

The military courts were set up soon after the Peshawar attack of December 2014 that killed nearly 150 schoolchildren for speedy trial of militants in Pakistan.

The Army said Bajwa "confirmed death sentences awarded to 14 hardcore terrorists, who were involved in heinous offences related to terrorism".

They were found guilty of attacking armed forces, law enforcing agencies, killing of innocent civilians and destruction of educational institutions.

"On the whole, they were involved in killing of 22 persons including 3 civilians, 19 Armed Forces/Frontier Constabulary/ police officials and injuring 23 others," the Army said, adding arms and explosives were also recovered from their possession.

These convicts were tried by special military courts but the dates and venues of the trial was not shared by the Army due to security reasons.

Another eight persons were imprisoned for their involvement in militancy in the country.

A top Taliban commander held in Pakistani detention for more than eight years has been freed, sources said Thursday, in an apparent move to aid tentative talks between the United States and the militant group.

The release of Abdul Ghani Baradar -- the former right-hand man of Taliban founder Mullah Omar, who died in 2013 -- came less than two weeks after US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met with the group's representatives in Qatar to discuss ending the Afghan conflict.

Baradar was among several senior Taliban leaders freed this week, after the Taliban demanded their release in direct talks with Khalilzad on October 12, a senior Taliban leader told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

"We believe that they were released at the US's request," the leader said.

He said Baradar would likely stay in Pakistan and shuttle between the Taliban's Doha office, Kabul and Islamabad.

"It was important for confidence building and all three will participate in the next round of talks with the US in Qatar," he added.

Baradar was the most high-profile Afghan Taliban leader detained by Pakistan since the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

He was arrested in the southern port city of Karachi in 2010, reportedly in an operation that was described as a huge blow to the militant group, which ruled

Afghanistan from 1996-2001 when it was toppled by a US-led invasion.

It was not clear what role, if any, he would play in peace talks.

"Baradar was freed yesterday afternoon and he joined his family," Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP in a WhatsApp message.

He escaped from a Yemeni prison in 2006, after which Al-Rimi has been linked to the September 2008 attack on the US Embassy in Sana'a that left 20 dead, and the December 2009 attempted suicide bombing by "underwear bomber" Umar Farouq Abdulmutallab aboard a US-bound airliner.

Britain has convicted an 18-year-old girl after they found out that she had been planning and plotting an attack on London with the first all-women Islamic State cell.&nbsp;

Safaa Boular, plotted the grenade and gun attack in her hometown after the authorities intervened to stop her from traveling to Syria to marry an ISIS terrorist she had met online.

She is the youngest female to be charged with planning an IS attack in Britain.

Reports say that she was bullied during her childhood by strangers because of her Islamic dress.&nbsp;She became interested in terrorism after the Paris attacks in 2015 and wanted to know why would people do it.

Soon after she&nbsp;got in touch with a woman through Twitter who painted the caliphate as a world where “everyone was equal”. In no time, Safaa accumulated hundreds of ISIS contacts and through them met Naweed Hussain, a British-born Islamic State militants in Raqqa.

Boular was only 16 when she made contact with British-born ISIS terrorist Naweed Hussain, 32, discussing marriage and how they would don his-and-hers suicide belts.

But her hopes of joining him were dashed when she was stopped at the airport in August 2016 following a family trip to Morocco, and her passport was confiscated.

Hussain was later killed in a drone strike.

Afterwards, Boular decided to plan an attack in Britain, detailing it in coded language -- grenades were "pineapples" -- to online contacts who were, in fact,t undercover agents.

When Boular was charged with preparing terrorist acts in April 2017, she passed the baton to her sister Rizlaine, 22, and their mother Mina Dich, 44, who hatched their own plan.

The trio was taped talking about an Alice in Wonderland-themed tea party, which the prosecution argued was code for an attack.

Rizlaine and her mother were arrested after being tracked by police visiting potential sites around Westminster and buying knives.

Safaa had consistently denied two charges of planning to travel to Syria for ISIS activity and engaging in preparations for terror attacks on iconic landmarks in London including, most notably, the British Museum. But the jury found her guilty of both charges, making her Britain’s youngest convicted female Islamic State terrorist.

Advocate Qamar Nadeem told the BBC Urdu service that Dr Afridi, who has received several remissions in sentence, will complete his jail term this month.

He said that Dr Afridi was awarded a total of 33 years jail term on four different charges in which he was awarded 30 years on three counts while three years on one. However, after an approval of his appeal, 10 years of imprisonment had been remitted, the Express Tribune reported.

According to Mr Nadeem, if Dr Afridi's total jail term and remissions are taken into consideration, then he is likely to be freed this month.

Dr Afridi, 56, was shifted to Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi from Peshawar central jail on Friday, apparently due to security concerns.

According to media reports, he was moved in a helicopter but no official statement was issued by the government. However, it is still not clear as to whether he will be kept in Adiala jail or shifted to another location, the report said.

There is a chance that after his release, Dr Afridi might move to the US to settle there permanently, it said.

On April 28, an official of the Central Prison Peshawar confirmed that in the afternoon a large number of policemen as well as army contingent reached the prison and took Dr Afridi away with them amid tight security.

Shakil Afridi has been languishing in a prison in the city of Peshawar for almost seven years after his fake vaccination programme helped US agents track and kill the Al-Qaeda leader.

Six women from Azerbaijan and four from Tajikistan were also condemned to life in prison Sunday on the same charge.

The women, who have the right to appeal against the sentences, stepped in court one-at-a-time all dressed in black headscarves and pink blouses, most of them accompanied by their children.

Most of the women on trial Sunday claimed they were tricked into going to Iraq.

On April 17, three women, including two Russian citizens and one French national, were sentenced to life in prison over their membership in the notorious terror group.

Several Afghanistan security officials have been killed in separate clashes with the Taliban, police officials said on Tuesday.&nbsp

The NIA filed the chargesheet on Friday against Shahid Yusuf, under section 120-B of the IPC and 13, 17, 18, 20, 21, 38 and 40 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, for willfully raising, receiving, collecting 'terror funds' and holding proceeds of terrorism' for furtherance of terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

His bail plea was dismissed by the trial court in New Delhi on March 7.

The NIA charge sheet included punishment for unlawful activities, punishment for raising funds for terrorist act, punishment for conspiracy, punishment for being member of terrorist gang or organisation, punishment for holding proceeds of terrorism, membership of a terrorist organisation and support given to a terrorist organization, under sections of UAPA.

The final report also accused him of hatching a criminal conspiracy, punishable under section 120-B of Indian Penal Code.&nbsp

The agency said the case was registered on the basis of information regarding funds from Pakistan being sent to Jammu and Kashmir through hawala channels via Delhi to spread terrorism. It has claimed that Yousuf had received a total of nearly Rs. 4.5 lakh through eight international wire transfers.The agency, which had in 2011 arrested several persons including one Ghulam Mohd Bhat with Rs. 21.2 lakh.

Shahid Yousuf was the seventh accused against whom a chargesheet has been filed in the case. The other accused people include Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, Mohammad Sidiq Ganai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo, Farooq Ahmad Dagga, Mohammad Maqbool Pandit and Aijaz Ahmad Bhat.

Of these seven accused people, five, including Shahid Yusuf, are in custody and two namely Mohd Maqbool Pandit and Aijaz Ahmad Bhat are absconding. Of the four accused facing trial in the case, three accused people namely Mohammad Sidiq Ganai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo, and Farooq Ahmad Dagga have already pleaded guilty.&nbsp

Security forces on Monday put the city of Pathankot in Punjab on high alert after a local claimed to have given a lift to two suspected terrorists.

A massive search operation has been launched by police in Pathankot to hunt them down. Police have set up check posts and security has been beefed up in the area. The armed suspicious men were in Army fatigue.

The local claimed that he gave lift to two men last night. The duo got down at a place nearby Kathua region in neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir, the police said.

Dinanagar in Gurdaspur and the Air Force base in Pathankot were attacked by terrorists in July 2015 and January 2016, respectively.&nbsp;
