US President Donald Trump on Saturday (Sep 20) warned the Taliban of unspecified consequences if the Afghan government refuses to hand back Bagram Airfield to the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned that unless Afghanistan give the Bagram Airbase "back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!". This was not the first time Trump has mentioned taking back the air base; he first floated the idea during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom.

Why does the Bagram air base matter?
Bagram, once the largest US military base in Afghanistan, served as a hub for American and NATO operations for two decades. US and allied forces withdrew from the site in July 2021 as part of a broader pullout that preceded the Taliban's rapid takeover of the country. Human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have previously criticised practices at Bagram during America's so-called "War on Terror", particularly the alleged harsh treatment of detainees. At a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this week, Trump said he was working to regain control of the facility. Lamenting the loss of the airbase and noting its proximity to China, Trump said, "We're trying to get it back, by the way, that could be a little breaking news. We're trying to get it back because they need things from us".Also read | Trump slams US media, calls negative coverage 'illegal' after Jimmy Kimmel show suspension stirs free speech debate
Will the US take back the Bagram air base forcefully?
Back in Washington on Saturday, Trump was asked by reporters whether the administration was considering a military operation to retake the base. Trump declined to be specific. "We won't talk about that, but we're talking now to Afghanistan, and we want it back and we want it back soon, right away. And if they don't do it, you're going out find out what I'm going to do," he said. Also read | Trump just made it nearly impossible for Indians to work in the US — Here's howThe president has frequently criticised the 2021 withdrawal and has linked the loss of Bagram to broader concerns about strategic competition in the region, including China's growing influence in Afghanistan. The Taliban has declared it is willing to work with UK Reform Party leader Nigel Farage on his proposed plan to deport 600,000 illegal migrants, including Afghans. A senior official from Kabul said they would accept returnees with “dignity” and welcome aid, but not direct payments. The statement follows Farage’s pledge to tear up international treaties and strike new deals with countries like Afghanistan, Iran, and Eritrea. With Downing Street not ruling out similar future deals, the Taliban hinted it may find Farage’s approach “easier” to work with.

The Taliban regime has turned norms around for girls ever since they came to power in August 2021. Education for girls in Afghanistan has been a tall ask. The United Kingdom on Tuesday (Jul 15) revealed a secret scheme involving thousands of Afghans, who worked for the UK government, and their families were relocated to Britain after a data breach in 2022 that put their lives at risk. Speaking in the parliament after the UK High Court lifted a gag order banning reports of the scheme, Defence Minister John Healey described how a “serious departmental error” could have put the lives of nearly 19,000 Afghans “at stake”. In February 2022, a spreadsheet containing names and details of about 19,000 people from Afghanistan seeking relocation to the UK was accidentally leaked by a British official, Healey said. This incident happened just six months after the Taliban took over Kabul.
‘Serious departmental error’
“This was a serious departmental error,” said Healey, adding that “lives may have been at stake.” The previous Conservative government launched a secret programme to help those “judged to be at the highest risk of reprisals by the Taliban,” he said. Under the programme, the Afghan Response Route, some 900 Afghans and 3,600 family members have been brought to the UK or are in transit at a cost of around £400 million ($535.7 million), Healey said. They are among 36,000 Afghans who were accepted by Britain under different schemes since the fall of Kabul in 2021. Healey, Labour’s opposition defence spokesman, was briefed about the programme in 2023. However, the Conservative government asked a court to impose a “super-injunction” to ban any mention of the scheme in parliament or by the media. When this nation makes a promise, we should keep it.”

Taliban has a peaceful message for America - in a video featuring hostages. A video was shared online by a few Taliban-linked accounts in an effort to promote tourism in Afghanistan - ruled by the Islamic extremists. The video was aimed at rebranding Afghanistan as a peaceful, tourist-friendly place. But the only twist is, the makers use dark humour to do so. The viral 50-second clip was created by Yosaf Aryubi, founder of Raza Afghanistan, a tour agency that offers travel packages to international visitors, according to The Independent. It starts with a scene mimicking a hostage situation. It showed three men kneeling with black bags on their hands and faces covered with them, while three men stood behind with guns. “We have one message for America,” one of them said. Then suddenly, he removes the black bag from one of the "hostages" and the man smiles and says, “Welcome to Afghanistan,” while showing his thumb to the camera. The video came amid persistent warnings from the US government, which strongly advises its citizens against travelling to the country.

The video further showed a montage of armed men smiling, giving peace signs to the camera. In one shot, the camera zooms in on a rifle labelled “Property of US Government” as a man chuckles, noting, “It's not even on safety." The video also showed foreigners enjoying a lavish Afghan meal. A parrot perches on a diner's head, a flower is tucked into a gun barrel, and the stunning Afghan countryside is seen on full display in the video. Why the video? The makers, Yosaf, grew up in the US and keep travelling to Kabul and California. He told The Independent that the video was meant to challenge the Western perception of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. “It mocks how most of the West sees Afghanistan and then shows a bit of the reality that our guests experience,” he told the news agency.

A six-year-old girl was allegedly sold by her father in Afghanistan and then married to the 45-year-old man, who had paid money for her. The man already has two other wives. The incident took place in the Marjah district of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, according to US-based Afghan outlet Amu.tv. We have received credible reports of families offering daughters as young as 20 days old up for future marriage in return for a dowry.”As per Unicef estimates, 28 per cent of Afghan women aged 15-49 years were married before the age of 18, Fore added.
Child marriages on rise in Afghanistan under Taliban
Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, the country has witnessed a sharp rise in child and early marriages, primarily due to extreme poverty and stringent curbs on women, including the prohibition of female education. Moreover, Afghanistan does not have a legal minimum age for marriage under Taliban though the previous civil code had set 16 as the minimum age for girls.
