Pakistan 'disappointed' by ban on university education for Afghan women, urges Kabul to revisit decision

The Taliban have freed two Americans as part of a goodwill gesture, the US State Department said.

Speaking to the reporters on Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Ned Price, however, refused to reveal details on the two Americans due to confidentiality rules.

"This, we understand, to have been a goodwill gesture on the part of the Taliban. This was not part of any swap of prisoners or detainees. There was no money that exchanged hands," he said.

Even though no US official disclosed the identities of the Americans, CNN reported that one of them was Ivor Shearer, a filmmaker arrested in August with his Afghan producer — whose fate is unclear — while filming the site of a US drone attack that killed Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

According to AFP news agency, the two Americans were released to Qatar, which has been mediating American interests in Afghanistan after the Taliban took over.

The release of the US citizens came on the same day the Taliban banned women from accessing universities.

The Taliban authorities on Tuesday in a letter sent to all public and private colleges announced that the ministry puts an indefinite ban on Afghan girls attending educational institutions.

Price noted this “irony” saying that the Biden administration condemns the decision by the organisation.

"The irony of them granting us a goodwill gesture on a day where they undertake a gesture like this to the Afghan people, it's not lost on us." Price said.

"But it is a question for the Taliban themselves regarding the timing of this."

Afghanistan: Taliban may put further restrictions on media, says official

The Taliban 2.0 is not very different from its predecessor. Back in the 90s, the terror group in power was condemned globally for its inhumane and gory punishments and now after repeated promises of being more modern, the Taliban is back on its old tracks.

Taliban flogs 27 people after first public execution

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan have backed the use of the India-built Chabahar port in Iran and said that it is ready to provide all the necessary "facilities".

A statement issued by the Taliban's foreign ministry "welcomed" the proposal to include Chabahar port in the North-South International Transport Corridor that connects Mumbai to Moscow and passes via Iran and Azerbaijan. The statement highlighted that the regime stands "ready to provide all necessary protection and facilities in this regard."

India is developing the first phase of Shahid Behesti Port in Chabahar and has invested $85 million in the project as it provides larger connectivity across the region, especially to landlocked Central Asia. It has also supplied six Mobile Habour Cranes— with 140 tons and four 100 tons capacities—and other equipment worth $25 million.

The port has been used in the past for sending humanitarian consignments to Afghanistan. In 2020, India utilised the Chabahar port to ship 75,000 MTs of wheat as humanitarian food assistance to Afghanistan.

Since December 2018, when Indian company India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) took over the operations, the port has handled 215 vessels and 4 million tons of bulk and general cargo.

The Taliban’s comment on Chabahar port comes as it has been keen on Indian investment and revival of Indian infrastructure, and development projects in the country.

Taliban had also called for Indian investment in building a new Kabul city during a meeting between Afghanistan's minister for Urban Development and Housing (MUDH) Hamdullah Nomani and the head of India's technical team in the country, Bharat Kumar.

The Taliban’s statement came after the India-Central Asia National security advisors meet in Delhi this week, with a key focus on the situation in Afghanistan and connectivity.

The statement welcomed the meet and appreciated the joint communique of the meeting that expressed "support for a stable, peaceful, integrated and secure Afghanistan and the principle of non-interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

The Taliban assured that it "remains committed and will not allow anyone to pose a threat to the region and the world from Afghanistan’s soil or to interfere in other’s internal affairs".

There have been concerns over Afghanistan becoming a safe haven for international terror groups, and India is concerned that Pakistan-based UN-designated terror groups like JeM, LeT may find space in the war-ravaged country.

Delhi hosted the first ever India- Central Asia National Security Advisors (NSAs) meet on Tuesday. The meeting was one of the key outcomes of the India-Central Asia virtual summit that took place in January.

Taliban hoped that it will be invited to the next meeting which will take place in May 2023 in Kazakhstan where its presence "would help establish cooperation and confidence in security, prevention of human and drug trafficking, delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan, and particularly in the implementation of basic infrastructure projects."

Taliban back usage of India-built Chabahar port, say ‘ready to provide facilities

Reacting to the international outcry over its first public execution since taking over Afghanistan, the Taliban hit out against the “interference” in the internal matters of the country and called it reprehensible.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the criticism reeked of a lack of understanding about Islam as well as Afghanistan, reports VOA news.

"They have rendered many sacrifices for the enforcement of Islamic laws and system in the country," Mujahid said.

The spokesman defended the public execution, saying that even America and Europe hand out death penalties and that it was common “all over the world”.

"The fact that Afghanistan is being criticised for applying Islamic sentences shows that some countries and organizations have either insufficient knowledge or have problems with Islam, respecting Muslims' beliefs and laws," Mujahid said.

"This action is an interference in the internal affairs of countries and is reprehensible," he added.

On Wednesday, the Taliban carried out the public execution of a man convicted of murder.

The convict was killed publicly by the victim’s father. The incident happened at a sports stadium in western Farah province before hundreds of spectators and many top Taliban officials.

The public execution underscored the Taliban’s intentions to continue ruling Afghanistan with hard-line policies as per their interpretation of the Sharia law.

In recent weeks, the Taliban's Sharia law was seen in full force when dozens of men and women were flogged in crowded football stadiums in several areas, including the capital, Kabul, for committing alleged "moral crimes" such as adultery, theft, running away from home, "illegal relationships, and sodomy."

The move triggered strong reactions from the West, including the UN, with the US State Department spokesman Ned Price telling reporters in Washington that officials were monitoring watching the Taliban's treatment of Afghans.

"This indicates to us that the Taliban seek a return to their regressive and abusive practices of the 1990s," he said, referring to the hardline group's previous rule in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.

The United Nations also condemned the Taliban’s action saying that it was a form of "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" and "contrary to the right to life protected" under international laws.

Taliban have sought Indian investment and revival of New Delhi-supported infrastructure projects in the country during a meeting last week. The meeting took place between the Taliban's minister for Urban Development and Housing (MUDH) Hamdullah Nomani and the head of India's technical team in the country, Bharat Kumar. Taliban's Suhail Shaheen told WION, "meeting focused on matters relating to the resumption of the work of incomplete projects previously initiated by India. Also, Indian participation in investment in building new Kabul city." He also assured of the security of Indian investment in the country. India in the past has been responsible for major infrastructure projects in the country, from the Parliament building in Kabul to the India-Afghanistan friendship dam in Herat. Around 433 High Impact Community Development Projects have been completed with Indian financial support in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. During FY 2019-20, 37 projects were completed in various provinces of Afghanistan under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) scheme of the Indian government. After the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August last year, the implementation of projects was impacted. New Delhi had also evacuated its diplomats out of the country after the Taliban's come back. In June, India announced that it will deploy its technical team with a focus on the delivery of humanitarian assistance. "India has a historical and civilizational relationship with the Afghan people. In order to closely monitor and coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders for the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance and in continuation of our engagement with the Afghan people, an Indian technical team has reached Kabul", MEA in a statement had said. The team consists of diplomats and other officials. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Afghanistan Shocker: Woman flogged for shopping alone, Taliban returns to archaic rules

A group of United Nations experts said on Friday (November 25) that the way the Taliban are treating Afghan women and girls could amount to a crime against humanity. The assessment by the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan Richard Bennett and nine other experts says the treatment of women and girls may amount to "gender persecution".

They say that the Taliban's targeting of women and girls deepens "flagrant violations of their human rights and freedoms that are already the most draconian globally and may amount to gender persecution -- a crime against humanity".

Last year in August, the Taliban regained control of Kabul from the Western-backed government, with a vow of rebranding themselves, also attempting to improve foreign relations and boost trade and the economy.

However, it appears that the Taliban 2.0 is quite similar to their previous version. And per the analysts, the new version of the Taliban is not willing to make significant changes to its extremist ideology.

Their latest decisions, especially relating to women and their freedom, indicate that the Taliban are far away from changing their harsh social policies.

After taking control, they said that they respect women's rights as per their interpretation of Islamic law, and ever since, a majority of women who work for the government have lost their jobs. There are also restrictions regarding women's mobility, education, schooling for young girls, attire, etc.

The UN experts said in a statement: "In recent months, violations of women and girls' fundamental rights and freedoms in Afghanistan, already the most severe and unacceptable in the world, have sharply increased."

"Confining women to their homes is tantamount to imprisonment and is likely leading to increased levels of domestic violence and mental health challenges," the statement added.
