When the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021, the US and Europe blocked more than nine billion dollars in Afghan Central Bank reserves, but now reports suggest that millions of dollars are being smuggled into Afghanistan from Pakistan.

A suicide bomber blew himself in a mosque in Peshawar in one of the deadliest terror attacks Pakistan has seen in recent history. Over 100 men, including police officers and civilians, were killed. Pakistani terror group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is believed to have carried it out. The continuous onslaught of TTP has made Pakistan so desperate for help that it is now looking towards the Afghan Taliban for intervention in the matter. But there is a grim chance of any help. Here's why nobody will help Pakistan fight the home-grown Taliban: 1) Afghanistan: Pakistan has sought Afghan Taliban Chief Haibuttallah Akhundzada’s help to rein in the outlawed Pakistani Taliban. This a desperate move by Pakistan, but the TTP and Afghan Taliban are fundamentally the same organization so there is little hope of help from Afghanistan against the TTP. 2) China: Pakistan may look towards its friend China, hoping that China can at least convince the Afghan Taliban to push for a ceasefire between the Pakistan Army and the TTP. But if China interferes, it can jeopardise its interests at Pakistan’s Gwadar port which is the heart of the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the most significant culmination point for China's Belt and Road Initiative. Chinese citizens in Gwadar are already under threat to vacate the area by local political outfits. China has major stakes and there is little to no chance that China will interfere. 3) Pakistan could consider repeating its joint military operation Zarb-e-Azb from 2014 when nearly 3,500 militants were eliminated. But the operation took a major toll on Pakistan as well. Over 500 Pakistani soldiers lost their lives during Zarb-e-Azb and nearly one million people were displaced from their homes. Given Pakistan’s current financial crisis – it cannot consider such an operation again. WATCH | Inside South Asia: Poverty, Hunger, Malnutrition: The story of Afghanistan × 4) US: Pakistan may look towards engaging with the US and asking for help, but again there is no chance the US would intervene in any conflict involving the Taliban or Afghanistan. In 2021, after 20 long years - the US exited Afghanistan by signing a deal with the Taliban under the Doha Agreement. Launching an offensive against the TTP to help Pakistan will jeopardise US’ deal with the Taliban and the US doesn’t want any of that. 5) Finally, Pakistan has the option of negotiating directly with the TTP which basically means agreeing to their demands. The TTP has clear goals: Enforce Shariah law in Pakistan; establish a unified front to maintain Afghan Taliban control in Afghanistan; and conduct defensive jihad against Pakistani security forces. Ultimately, the group seeks to overthrow the Pakistani government and establish an Islamic caliphate in Pakistan. TTP is gunning for the Pakistan army and is believed to have carried out 140 attacks in Pakistan in the past three months with close to 10,000 cadres based in Afghanistan and the Pashtun tribal areas of Pakistan. Seems like Pakistan is stuck with the monster they created with no escape. (Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Why nobody will help Pakistan fight home-grown Taliban

The UN Food Agency says malnutrition rates in Afghanistan are at record highs. Scores of families can't afford to feed their children. Millions have been pushed into extreme poverty and hunger since the Taliban takeover in 2021. Now, Taliban ban Afghan girls from appearing in university entrance exams

As the status of women in Afghanistan continues to become worse in the absence of basic rights, the highest-ranking woman at the United Nations urged the Muslim countries on Wednesday (January 26) to help the Taliban to move from the 13th century to the 21st. Amina Mohammed, the deputy secretary-general said at a news conference that she used everything in her "toolbox" during meetings with Taliban ministers to try to reverse their crackdown on Afghan women and girls.

Amina, who is a former Nigerian Cabinet minister, also said that the foreign minister and a deputy prime minister were among four Taliban ministers, who spoke "off one script" during meetings with her delegation last week.

As reported by the news agency The Associated Press, she said that the officials tried to underline what they claim they have done. They call it their effort to create a safe environment for women. She said, "Their definition of protection would be, I would say, ours of oppression."

Ahead of her visit, Amina raised concerns to Taliban officials in Kabul and the southern city of Kandahar over the administration's orders restricting women from work and education.

During the press conference, Mohammed said her delegation, including the head of UN Women, pushed back against the Taliban.

She said, "We reminded them that in humanitarian principles, non-discrimination was a key part … and that they were wiping out women from the workplace."

Mohammed weighed in on a range of issues such as lawlessness, Taliban's attempt to get global recognition, etc. She said it is important for the UN and its partners to work more in some 20 Afghan provinces that are more forward-leaning.

"A lot of what we have to deal with is how we travel the Taliban from the 13th century to the 21st. That's a journey. So it’s not just overnight," she said.

Highest-ranking woman at UN urges Muslims to help Taliban move from ‘13th century to 21st’

A senior UN official was informed by the Taliban ministers that they will probably sketch new guidelines to permit women in Afghanistan to work in a few humanitarian operations. While speaking to the BBC, Martin Griffiths said that he had received "encouraging responses" from various Taliban ministers while holding talks with them in Kabul, even though the government has not yet reversed the ban imposed on Afghan women working in NGOs.

Since the women in Afghanistan play an important role in delivering aid, concerns have been raised that the ban is endangering the country's life-saving humanitarian operations.

"It's worth remembering that, this year, Afghanistan is the biggest humanitarian aid programme in the world ever," said UN's Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Griffiths in Kabul.

Griffiths held back-to-back meetings with senior leaders of the Taliban government in Kabul and discussed the recent ban imposed on women in Afghanistan from working with NGOs.

"If women do not work in humanitarian operations, we do not reach, we do not count, the women and girls we need to listen to. In all humanitarian operations around the world, women and girls are the most vulnerable,” Griffiths said.

Hinting at positive development in future, he said that it looked like the Taliban ministers are “listening” and that “they told me they will be issuing new guidelines in due course which I hope will help us reinforce the role of women".

He also highlighted "a consistent pattern of Taliban leaders presenting us with exceptions, exemptions, and authorisations for women to work".

The Taliban government, which came to power in August 2021, had last month imposed a ban on women aid workers after banning girls from studying in university and high school in March.

Griffiths said that the operations of the United Nations would continue in Afghanistan, however, they are facing the concern of international donors not willing to commit big financial cost of aid which is approximately $4.6 billion a year.

ALSO READ | Afghanistan: Freezing cold has killed at least 124 people, confirm Taliban "It's worth remembering that, this year, Afghanistan is the biggest humanitarian aid programme in the world ever," said UN's Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Griffiths in Kabul. WATCH | Gravitas: Dog honoured for sniffing out Taliban bombs The Taliban government, which came to power in August 2021, had last month imposed a ban on women aid workers after banning girls from studying in university and high school in March. Griffiths said that the operations of the United Nations would continue in Afghanistan, however, they are facing the concern of international donors not willing to commit big financial cost of aid which is approximately $4.6 billion a year. "I lose sleep about this, I really do," he said, adding that, in the coming weeks, he would hold talks with donors to make them understand why Afghanistan requires help during the humanitarian crisis as 28 million people require aid and around 6 million are on the verge of famine. The 2023 winter has broken all records of severe cold and is creating havoc all over the world. Recently, China's northernmost city, Mohe recorded its coldest day ever and now in Afghanistan, around 124 people died due to freezing temperatures.

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan confirmed that at least 124 people have died due to freezing cold in the country. The official spokesperson of the State Ministry for Disaster Management said that about 70,000 livestock had also perished in cold weather. According to BBC reports, this is the coldest winter season in a decade.

Acting Minister of Disaster Management Mullah Mohammad Abbas Akhund told the BBC that many areas of Afghanistan were now completely cut off due to snow and even military helicopters sent to the rescue, couldn't land in the most mountainous regions.

Though the forecast for the next 10 days indicates that temperatures will rise and the weather will be a bit warmer, the acting minister Akhund says he is still worried about the rising toll of Afghans and their livestock.

Afghanistan: Freezing cold has killed at least 124 people, confirm Taliban

The United Nations' aid chief visited Kabul on Monday and raised concerns over women's education and work with the Taliban administration's acting minister of foreign affairs, an Afghan ministry statement said.

The Taliban-run administration last month ordered NGOs not to allow most female employees to work, prompting many aid agencies to partially suspend operations in the midst of a humanitarian crisis unfolding during a bitterly cold winter.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths raised the issue of women's education and work and how this affected the U.N.'s operations, according to a ministry of foreign affairs statement.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the meeting.

It follows a visit to Afghanistan last week by U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, who expressed alarm to Taliban officials in Kabul and the southern city of Kandahar over the administration's orders restricting women from work and education.

Acting Afghan Minister of Foreign Affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi said he asked Griffiths to share with the international community the Taliban administration's "achievements and opportunities" like a general amnesty for former opponents, "instead of complaints and shortcomings."

The foreign ministry statement said Griffiths had acknowledged security had improved in the country, which had seen decades of fighting before the Taliban took over as foreign troops withdrew in 2021.

No foreign government has formally recognised the Taliban administration since it seized power, with some diplomats saying it must change course on women's rights. Many countries have expressed major concerns over most girls and women over the age of 12 being stopped from attending school or university.

Enforcement of sanctions and a cut in development aid have contributed to the country falling into an economic crisis which has left more than half the population dependent on humanitarian aid, aimed at meeting urgent needs.

The Taliban administration in Afghanistan said on Saturday (January 14) that overturning restrictions against women is not a priority, weeks after it passed two orders banning university education for women and banning women from working for aid groups. The Taliban said that it would not permit any acts which violate Islamic law and the concerns regarding the restrictions will be dealt with according to the established rule of the Islamic Emirate in the country, a report by Khama Press said on Sunday. After taking over Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban imposed several restrictions on females including restricting their freedom of movement, barring girls from attending secondary schools, colleges and universities, excluding women from most areas of the workforce and also banning them from using parks, gyms and public bath houses. The latest two orders of the administration to suspend university education and ban working for aid groups have only worsened the situation for women in the country.

Global governments and rights groups have severely condemned the restrictions, urging the Taliban to reverse them. However, the Islamic Emirate remains defiant.

On Friday, the United States pushed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to adopt a resolution to reverse the ban on Afghan women working for aid groups or attending universities and high schools. The council held a meeting on this day to discuss the decisions taken by the Taliban, and a group of diplomats told the news agency Reuters that the US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the security council that given the gravity of the situation, it should unanimously adopt a resolution to condemn the bans and call for an immediate reversal.

Before Friday's meeting, 11 UNSC members including the US, issued a joint statement urging the Taliban to reverse all oppressive measures against females.

Separately, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) executive director Catherine Russell described the Islamic Emirate's ban on women aid workers as both wrong and dangerous and pointed out that without them, lives will be lost, and children will die, Reuters reported. Russell said UNICEF was reviewing the impact of the ban on its work and as the situation evolves, it will have to make difficult decisions as to which activities can continue, and which must be suspended.
