US cyber experts and government officials have warned that Chinese hackers have deeply infiltrated the country’s critical infrastructure, including water, power, communication and transport entities.

As per a report published in the Washington Post, these hackers are directly linked with China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The aim of this expansive Chinese intrusion is clear: To limit the USA’s ability to play a larger role in Asian conflicts, especially in a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan and to cause chaos within the US and stir instability in the country.

<h2>Hawaii: A special target</h2>

The Post reported that a Hawaiian water utility was amongst the various entities targeted by the Chinese hackers.

Hawaii is where the US stations its troops and warships meant for patrolling the Indo-Pacific area. The island also serves as the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command.

By interfering with Hawaii’s critical infrastructure, China likely wants to jeopardise the USA’s ability to intervene in a conflict involving Taiwan.

“This is stuff they pretty clearly see as relevant to a Taiwan scenario,” Joe McReynolds, a China security studies fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, was quoted as saying by The Post.

<h2>Dangerous designs</h2>

According to Chinese military officials, the PLA plans to coincide their cyber attacks on enemy targets with aerial strikes using the air force.

Hackers would target satellite networks, along with military logistics systems, of the enemy while airstrikes will reduce their military equipment to ashes.

PLA-backed hackers infiltrated USA’s water, power and communication entities: Report

China on Saturday (Dec 9) went all guns blazing over calls to include Taiwan in the United Nations-backed Conference of the Parties (COP28) Summit being held in Dubai.

A member of the Chinese delegation reasserted on the platform that Taiwan “was an inalienable part of China.”

"China has noted that during the meeting a handful of countries ignore the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and make noises about the participation by the Taiwan authorities in the COP," the member said via a translator.

"This is unacceptable," the delegate said, asking for their statement to be entered into the official record.

<h2>Allies call for Taiwan’s inclusion</h2>

Earlier this week, the leaders of four of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, namely Saint Lucia and Saint Kitts and Nevis, Tuvalu, and Eswatini, called on the UN to include Taiwan in the climate conference.

In his address, Saint Lucian Prime Minister Philip Pierre said that "the time is now for world leaders to transform to a safer place for our children."

"And in this battle Taiwan must not be left behind," he underlined.

Taiwan, a proud democratic country in East Asia, was kicked out of the UN in 1971. Over the last few years, Beijing has exerted pressure on nations still having active diplomatic relations with the island nation.&nbsp;

As the tech-heavy market in Taiwan experiences this financial influx, its neighbour, South Korea, also attracted substantial inflows amounting to $3.1 billion. China is not likely to consider a major invasion of Taiwan for now due to domestic challenges, the island's president Tsai Ing-wen said Wednesday, although Beijing is trying to sway its upcoming election.

As many as 10 former and current Taiwanese military officers were indicted on spying charges for China on Monday (Nov 27), reported news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Four officers were accused of handing over "multiple items of military secrets" to Beijing in lieu of money while three&nbsp;were accused of&nbsp;recruiting active-duty servicemen to collect military information to "develop a network for China", the Taiwan High Prosecutors' Office said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the other two officers, both on active duty, partook in shooting a&nbsp;"psychological warfare" video for Beijing. In the video, they both could be heard saying:&nbsp;"I am willing to surrender to the People's Liberation Army".&nbsp;

The prosecutors argued that pledging allegiances to an enemy state and its Communist party was an extremely vicious act.&nbsp;

The last defendant stole military secrets from a safe at the military workplace and allegedly handed it over to the Beijing overlords.&nbsp;

"All the defendants had been or are currently servicemen but they betrayed their country and the people just because of personal interests..to seriously jeopardise security," prosecutors argued and demanded the court impose a "harsher sentence to serve as a warning".

<h2>Not the first instance</h2>

This is not the first instance when the Chinese moles have been identified in the Taiwanese military. Last month, a retired Taiwan Air Force colonel was jailed for 20 years on allegations of running a military spy ring for China.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Identified as one&nbsp;Liu Sheng-shu, the ex-serviceman was convicted of recruiting active-duty officers, in an attempt to transmit top-secret data to Beijing. Authorities confiscated over $500,000 from him, reported to be illicit earning.&nbsp;

Apart from&nbsp;Liu, five other officers, ranging from navy to air force were jailed for six to 20-years period.&nbsp;

Ely Ratner, who is Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs in the Biden administration, said on September 19 that the US was strengthening deterrence across the Taiwan Strait. Ratner said that Washington remained committed to the One China policy, which has helped preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for more than four decades. However, he pointed out that China was pushing the envelope by waging a campaign of military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taiwan. The top official also warned that a major conflict in the strait "would result in thousands of casualties and jeopardise more than $2 trillion in global economic activity, igniting a global economic depression." In August last year, then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei which outraged China. In response, China launched one of the biggest military drills ever seen around the island. In April this year, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited the US, which sparked shorter but intense military drills from China. The top contenders and their stand on China The top contenders for this year's presidential election in Taiwan are current Vice President William Lai, Hou Yu-Ih, Ko Wen-Je and Terry Gou. The contenders have called for talks with China. Vice President Lai, a leader of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has repeatedly called for talks with China but has been rebuffed as Beijing views him as a separatist. "We don't want to be enemies, we can be friends. And we would love to see China enjoy democracy and freedom – just like us," Lai, who is leading the opinion poll, said in August. "However, until China renounces the use of force against Taiwan, we must strengthen our military capacity," he added. Hou Yu-Ih, a leader of Taiwan's main opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) also said he would restart talks with China. The KMT traditionally favours close ties with China but strongly denies being pro-Beijing. Ko Wen-Je is a leader of the Taiwan People's Party. Foxconn made headlines last week after it was subjected to tax inspections by Chinese authorities. On Tuesday, Vice President Lai hit out at China over the Foxconn probe and said Beijing should cherish Taiwanese companies and not put pressure on them during an election. "During an election, China does not need to put pressure on Taiwanese companies, demanding they declare a position, or even that they directly support a candidate they prefer," Lai said. It will help it slide out easily. Dr Wang recommends using lidocaine or ethanol to kill bigger insects. These chemicals prevent damage to the ear by stopping them from moving. Speaking to reporters, Vice President Lai said, "During an election, China does not need to put pressure on Taiwanese companies, demanding they declare a position, or even that they directly support a candidate they prefer."

Taiwanese companies will lose their confidence in China and if they feel scared will shift production elsewhere, which will be a big loss to China, Lai added.

Last Sunday, Chinese state media reported that Foxconn was subjected to tax inspections, with authorities searching its offices in Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces. China's ministry of natural resources also inspected Foxconn's offices in Henan and Hubei provinces, where it has major offices.

Foxconn does the vast majority of its manufacturing in China and employs hundreds of thousands of workers across the country. More details about the searches were not known including when they were carried out or what was found.&nbsp;

In a statement, Foxconn said, "Legal compliance everywhere we operate around the world is a fundamental principle of Hon Hai Technology Group." "We will actively cooperate with the relevant units on the related work and operations," the statement added.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Ko Wen-je said that the Foxconn investigation reflects Taiwan's predicament as a "world orphan" due to deteriorating cross-strait relations with China.

"The biggest problem... is that the Taiwanese government has no way to communicate with China on behalf of Taiwanese companies," he said at a briefing with foreign media in Taipei.
