U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen underscored cooperative ties between their governments at a meeting Wednesday in California. WION-VOA Co-Production: US House Speaker, Taiwan President meet despite China threats

China announced a new round of sanctions against Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to the US, reported the Chinese state media, on Friday (April 7). Hsiao and her family members have been prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, as per media reports.

This comes after the Taiwanese president met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during her visit in the US state of California this week. The meeting has since drawn condemnation from Beijing.

As per media reports, the sanctions announced by China’s Taiwan Affairs Office also prohibit investors and firms related to Hsiao from cooperating with mainland organisations and individuals. In response to the move, Hsiao took to Twitter and wrote, “Wow, the PRC just sanctioned me again, for the second time,” along with an image of the statement by the Chinese government.

Notably, Beijing had also announced sanctions against Hsaio and around seven Taiwanese officials in August after former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island. At the time China had also accused Hsiao of being “independence diehards” which drew condemnation from the democratically governed island.

China has repeatedly claimed the self-governing island of Taiwan as a part of its territory and has vowed to “reunify” the island with the mainland by force if necessary. Meanwhile, Taiwan has forged stronger ties with Washington under Tsai amid growing threats from Beijing.

On Friday, China also imposed similar sanctions against The Prospect Foundation, which is headed by a former Taiwanese foreign minister, and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats, a multinational alliance of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office also accused these organisations of promoting the idea of “Taiwan independence” across the world, reported the state media. However, Chinese sanctions have very little impact since senior Taiwanese officials typically do not visit the mainland and Beijing’s courts do not have jurisdiction in Taiwan.

China imposes sanctions on Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to US after Tsai-McCarthy meet

Terry Gou, the founder of Taiwanese multinational electronics manufacturer Foxconn, is attempting to get a presidential nomination for Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT) for a second time. Gou made the announcement on Wednesday and targeted the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for its stance regarding China.

Speaking to reporters, Gou said the only way to avoid war with China was to get DPP out of the office and reduce Sino-US tensions.

"We must honestly tell young people that it is dangerous to vote for the DPP, which 'exalts Taiwan independence and hates and opposes China'," Gou said. "Peace is not taken for granted, and people need to make the correct choice."

Gou, however, may have a tough road ahead as Hou Yu-ih, mayor of New Taipei City is being considered the favourite to secure the nomination for the elections, slated to take place in January 2024.

"In response to the seriously erroneous acts of collusion between the United States and Taiwan, China will take resolute and effective measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," the ministry said in a statement published by the news agency Xinhua. China on Tuesday promised that it will "firmly defend" its national sovereignty, ahead of the meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in California this week.

"China will closely monitor the situation and firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning in a regular briefing.

"China is strongly opposed to the US arranging for Tsai Ing-wen to transit through its territory, and is strongly opposed to the meeting between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the third-ranking US official, and Tsai Ing-wen," said Mao.

"It seriously violates the One-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and seriously undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," she added.

China had earlier warned that the meeting between Tsai Ing-wen and McCarthy will "further damage" relations between Washington and Beijing.

The meeting to be held on Wednesday in California will "greatly hurt the national feelings of 1.4 billion Chinese people" and undermine "the political foundation of China-US relations," said a consulate spokesperson in a statement, adding that it would "further damage China-US relations."

"Speaker McCarthy is ignoring the broad support of the international community for the One-China principle, ignoring the lessons that should have been drawn from previous mistakes," said the consulate.

"There is no doubt that he will make the same mistake again, further damage China-US relations, but it will only strengthen the strong will and determination of the Chinese people" to achieve "reunification" with Taiwan, they added.

McCarthy, who is a Republican, had earlier confirmed that he will be holding talks with Tsai in California, defying China's warnings that he was "playing with fire”.

Tsai has planned to stop over in the US while returning from Central America, where she has met Guatemala's leaders and is travelling to Belize before meeting McCarthy.

McCarthy's office on Monday said that the "bipartisan" meeting will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, outside Los Angeles.

Originally, the Republican had planned to follow the footsteps of his predecessor as a speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who had made a controversial visit to Taiwan in August.

In the wake of the visit, China had conducted its largest-ever military exercises around Taiwan, a self-governing democracy which Beijing claims as part of its territory.

Last week, China's embassy to the United States charge d'affaires Xu Xueyuan said that the US risked "serious confrontation" no matter if their government visit Taiwan or vice versa.

"The US keeps saying that transit is not a visit and that there are precedents, but we should not use past mistakes as excuses for repeating them today," she stated.

She appealed to Washington "not to repeat playing with fire on the Taiwan question," alluding to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan last year, among other things.

ALSO READ | US House Speaker McCarthy to host Taiwanese president on Wednesday in California China had earlier warned that the meeting between Tsai Ing-wen and McCarthy will "further damage" relations between Washington and Beijing. The meeting to be held on Wednesday in California will "greatly hurt the national feelings of 1.4 billion Chinese people" and undermine "the political foundation of China-US relations," said a consulate spokesperson in a statement, adding that it would "further damage China-US relations." "Speaker McCarthy is ignoring the broad support of the international community for the One-China principle, ignoring the lessons that should have been drawn from previous mistakes," said the consulate. WATCH | China-Taiwan tensions continue; Beijing continues its military activities close to Taiwan Originally, the Republican had planned to follow the footsteps of his predecessor as a speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who had made a controversial visit to Taiwan in August. China vows to 'firmly defend national sovereignty' ahead of Tsai-McCarthy meet

United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will host Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California on Wednesday (April 5). President Tsai Ing-wen is on her first US stopover since 2019, though Taiwanese presidents have regularly made such trips. According to a statement from McCarthy's office, "On Wednesday, April 5th, Speaker Kevin McCarthy will be hosting a bipartisan meeting with the President of Taiwan at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library." This announcement is the official confirmation of what had been a widely anticipated meeting.

This will be the first between a Taiwanese leader and a US House of Representatives Speaker on American soil, although it is seen as a potentially less provocative alternative to McCarthy visiting Taiwan, something he has said he hopes to do, the news agency Reuters reported on Monday.

US House Speaker McCarthy to host Taiwanese president on Wednesday in California

Nine Chinese aircraft crossed median line of the Taiwan Strait to carry out combat readiness patrols, said Taiwan defence ministry. The Chinese moves have come just days after Beijing threatened retaliation if Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen meets Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of US House of Representatives.

Taiwan a democratically ruled island nation is viewed by China as its own territory. China has not ruled out use of force to retake Taiwan.

Tsai arrived in the United States on Wednesday, stopping on her way to Central America.

She is expected to meet McCarthy in Los Angeles on her way back to Taipei in April, and China on Wednesday threatened unspecified retaliation if that meeting were to go ahead.

Taiwan's defence ministry said that Chinese aircraft crossed at points in south, centre and north of the Taiwan Strait's median line. The median line is an unofficial buffer between China and Taiwan.

Taiwan's armed forces responded using its own aircraft and ships to monitor the situation using the principle of "not escalating conflicts or causing disputes", the ministry said.

"The communist military's deployment of forces deliberately created tension in the Taiwan Strait, not only undermining peace and stability, but also has a negative impact on regional security and economic development," it said in a statement.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen arrived in New York on Wednesday amid a crowd of supporters and protesters. Tsai's stopover in the US, the first of the two has been dubbed a 'provocation' by China. A crowd of protesters carrying signs with slogans “there is only one China in the world”, “support China’s reunification and resolutely oppose Taiwan independence” and “Taiwan independence has no way out, Taiwan independence is a dead end” could've spotted outside the New York hotel where she is staying. Meanwhile, one of Tsai's supporters took on the protesters by holding a sign that said, “Taiwan so awesome, even China can’t stop talking about us”. While the two-day New York visit has been officially called a transit stopover, Beijing continues to assert it is an attempt by the US to propagate 'Taiwan independence'. Speaking to reporters in Beijing, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian openly condemned the visit. "We firmly oppose this and will definitely take measures to resolutely fight back," said the spokesperson before adding, “The trip is not so much a ‘transit’, but an attempt to seek breakthroughs and propagate ‘Taiwan independence’." After former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island nation in August 2022, China upped the ante on Taiwan. During the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) congress last year, Xi asserted that the Taiwan matter was for the Chinese people only. Thus, experts are wary that the Tsai-McCarthy meeting could trigger another round of conflict. Earlier this month, the Taiwanese defence ministry mentioned the pivot in strategy. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory but the island nation and its people have never accepted Beijing's control. However, after Beijing staged war games around the island, fired indiscriminate missiles and declared it a no-fly zone last year in an attempt to simulate how it would look to cut Taiwan off in case of a potential conflict, Taipei has taken evasive actions.
