When asked by reporters about the lessons Taiwan has learnt from Israel-Hamas conflict, the Taiwanese defence minister said, "the initial (lesson) is that intelligence work is very important. With intelligence, many countermeasures can be made. A war can even be avoided."

"It is everyone's shared expectations to avoid a war," said Chiu, as reported by Reuters.

Even as the island works to counter China's military threats, the Taiwan minister said that even as Taiwan's military works to boost its combat readiness, it will not initiate a conflict. He stated that the ongoing conflict demonstrated the horror of war.

During a forum in Taipei on Wednesday, former Australian prime minister Scott Morrison voiced his support for Taiwan's strengthening of its defences.

He said that in light of China's threats against the island nation, it is essential for Taiwan to strengthen its resilience. He also said that Taiwan needs to show "urgency" and do more.

"But they spend considerably more proportionally on its defence than here in Taiwan," he added.

Taiwan's government has proposed designating around 2.5 per cent of the country's overall GDP to defence next year. In comparison, as per Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Israel's defence budget this year amounted to 4.5 per cent of its GDP.

The film featured two elves, representing the two pieces of the painting by Yuan dynasty master Huang Gongwang, which was torn apart in the 17th century by one of its owners.

At the end of the movie, the two characters came together, magically making the painting whole again.

The shorter piece of the scroll, known as "The Remaining Mountain", about 51 cm long, is at the Zhejiang Provincial Museum in Hangzhou city. Taiwan's National Palace Museum has kept the 640-cm long "Master Wuyong Scroll" since the 1950s.

The two pieces were reunited in 2011 when China lent its fragment to the Taiwanese museum for two months during a period of warmer relations as Taiwan pursued a policy of economic rapprochement with China.

But in recent years, as relations have cooled, China has ramped up military activities around Taiwan, including drills over the past month that Beijing said were targeted at combating separatist forces.

Typhoon Koinu is heading towards southern Taiwan on Wednesday (Oct 10), bringing with it strong winds and heavy rain, which caused the cancellation of more than 100 flights as well as the closure of work and educational institutions.

According to the transport ministry, 87 domestic flights and 25 international flights were cancelled by Taiwanese airlines.

According to Tropical Storm Risk, Koinu is predicted to make landfall on Taiwan's southeast coast on Thursday (Oct 11) morning close to the city of Taitung as a category three typhoon, but then weaken as it reaches the island's southern point and enters the Taiwan Strait.

The heaviest rain will fall along mountainous and sparsely populated sections of Pingtung county in the south and the east coast counties of Taitung and Hualien, but the typhoon will also have an impact on Kaohsiung, a significant southern port city.&nbsp;

"We are worried that the rain and wind will be very strong when the typhoon makes landfall, so from our end, we will strengthen typhoon prevention, and we hope residents stay alert and be careful," said Chen Chia-chen from Taiwan's Ocean Affairs Council, speaking in Taitung.

Kaohsiung and its neighbouring city of Tainan, announced that they will call off work and school from 6pm (1000 GMT) on Wednesday and continuing all day on Thursday.

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, experienced squally rain showers, although no major damage was anticipated. Schools and offices remained open as usual.

Tension are currently high between the US and China. President Joe Biden administration has maintained that it is clear-eyed on China and was stepping up pressure on the country. But it has also taken steps to maintain dialogue between the two nations. Blinken visited Beijing in June this year.

Taiwan is a major bone of contention between China and US. China claims that Taiwan is part of its territory and hasn't ruled out use of force to capture the self-governing, democratic island nation. China has held major military drills in the Taiwan Strait in past.

Recently, China also came up with a new path to move forward with its bid for "peaceful unification" with Taiwan by unveiling a plan to turn Fujian province into a model zone for "integration" with the island nation.&nbsp;

Zhu asserted that the People's Liberation Army's actions to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity are ongoing and called for people in Taiwan to oppose independence and collaborate with China to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Situated within the Mahindra World City in Chengalpattu district (nearly 60 km from the capital city of Chennai) of Tamil Nadu, the Pegatron facility is capable of assembling almost 20,000 iPhones per day.

The models being assembled here are Apple iPhone 14 Plus and 15 Plus. Considering the average cost of these models to be $1000, the impact of not operating for a day would mean that $20 million worth of phones are not being produced.&nbsp;

The blaze that began on Sunday night is learnt to have been put out in a few hours after the incident was reported. Videos of the incident showed multiple fire tenders and an ambulance at the Pegatron facility.

Personnel working at Pegatron told WION that there are more than 9,000 of them involved in iPhone assembly at the factory and that production activity had not been carried out on Monday. It is understood that the factory works round-the-clock from Monday to Saturday with a schedule off on Sundays. The factory's 24-hour workday is split into three shifts- A (6 am-2 pm), B (2 pm-10 pm) and C (10 pm-6 am).

Nearly 1,000 personnel are learnt to have reported for work at the facility on Tuesday morning. However, the assembly operations were not carried out as the damage assessment and cleaning are underway at the facility.&nbsp;

"The blaze began at one assembly hall and from there the smoke spread to the other two assembly halls. Some of the high-tech, imported machinery have also sustained damaged," WION has learnt.&nbsp;

Owing to the above factors, it is said that the resumption of assembly operations could take a week or longer.

When requested for an official response, Pegatron replied to WION: "At the company's factory in Chennai, India, on the evening of the 24th local time, there was a spark incident, which is currently under control. There are no injuries, no casualties nor damage to other assets. The cause of accident is currently under investigations by relevant authority, and the incident does not have significant financial or operational impact to Pegatron Corporation."

In the Steve Jobs Biography written by American journalist and author Walter Isaacson, it is said that the mercurial Apple founder used to make surprise visits to Apple assembly facilities and carry out inspections. During such inspection visits, he would put on a brand-new, white-coloured hand glove and wipe the factory work floor using the same. Such was the man's obsession with perfection and cleanliness, the book says.

In a statement to Reuters, Pegatron confirmed "there was a spark incident" which is currently under control, adding that the&nbsp;incident "does not have significant financial or operational impact" for the company.

"There are no injuries, no casualties nor damage to other assets. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by (the) relevant authority," Pegatron said.

Notably, Pegatron started assembling iPhones in India in September last year. Buoyed by the success of the plant, the company is in talks to open a second Indian facility for Apple near the current one in Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

Loitering Unmanned Aircraft Type 1 was inspired by the US-made Switchblade 300, a drone which proved effective in neutralising ground targets and destroying Russian tanks in the war in Ukraine.

The aerial weapon which has been tentatively named the “Loitering Missile II”, will be the Type 2 suicide drone which will be equipped with built-in warheads and will be able to linger near a target till the moment it strikes - by flying into the target.

<h2>Destructive aerial weapons can be launched from different platforms</h2>

Type 2, which is a miniature of Type 1's much larger version, can be launched from various platforms with the aim of amplifying its destructive power, as per the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, the top weapons builder of the country. 
 
“Type 2 is a high mobility munition that can be easily repositioned because its foldable wings allow for efficient transport,” stated Chi Li-pin, director of the Institute’s aeronautical systems research division, while speaking to South China Morning Post. 
 
The weapon has the ability to abort or change its attack missions mid-flight as required, Chi emphasised. 
 
Since the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been configured for multi-tube launches from various platforms like trucks, planes, unmanned aerial vehicles and ships, the officials can dispatch the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from land, air and sea, said Chi in his presentation before the defence technology show held last week in Taipei.

Taiwan develops destructive suicide drone amid harassment from China: Report

In a devastating incident, a fire erupted at a golf ball manufacturing facility in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, which resulted in loss of several lives while around 100 were injured, media reports said. As per the Associated Press, tragically, at least six individuals were killed due to the fire and subsequent explosions, which began on Friday night (September 22) and continued into the night. Among the casualties were three brave firefighters who were responding to the emergency.&nbsp;

<h2>Ongoing search&nbsp;</h2>

The search efforts continue for five individuals who remained unaccounted for and are missing. This includes four factory workers and one firefighter.&nbsp;The impact of the incident was extensive, with over 100 people requiring medical attention and being rushed to hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained during the fire and explosions.

Condolences poured in for those who lost their family members to the fire rage. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, during a speech in Taipei, on Saturday (September 23) offered her condolences to the victims' families.

She assured that she would personally visit the affected area to meet the people affected by the tragedy, Taiwan's media outlets said. To further elaborate on the relief efforts after the massive blaze, Tsai announced that the Pingtung County government had set up an emergency operation center.

Chou Chun-mi, magistrate of Pingtung county, in a Facebook post, said that the cause of the fire was still under investigation. “Facing the grief of the family members, I could not say anything except to bow deeply, apologize, and express my deepest condolences,” she said in the post, after visiting the funeral home and meeting with victims’ families.

Tragedy strikes Taiwan golf ball factory, fire leaves 6 dead and 100 injured

The Taiwanese defence ministry, on Friday (September 22) called recent Chinese military movements around the island “abnormal” while also reporting an increase in such activity over the past week or so. The ministry also particularly flagged amphibious exercises as well as drills Taipei has observed in the province facing the island.

The Taiwanese defence ministry, early Friday, said that they detected 32 Chinese aircraft within the previous 24 hours out of which 17 planes crossed the median line – an unofficial barrier between the two sides – according to a map it published. Two of the aircraft also ventured around Taiwan’s southern tip, as per the reports.&nbsp;

Beijing has recently ramped up military drills around Taipei as it continues to claim self-ruled Taiwan as its territory and has maintained it will seize it one day, by force, if necessary.

<h2>‘Abnormal’ military activities</h2>

In a press conference, Taiwan’s defence minister Chiu Kuo-cheng, said “Our enemy’s recent movements are really quite abnormal.”&nbsp;

This comes as the island’s defence officials have reported increased military activity during the past week, as dozens of fighters, drones, bombers and other aircraft, as well as warships, have operated nearby.&nbsp;

“Our initial analysis is that they are doing joint drills in September, including land, sea, air and amphibious,” Chiu told reporters in Taipei. Beijing is yet to respond to these comments.&nbsp;

The statement also came a day after an unusual statement by the defence ministry which said that it was monitoring Chinese activities &nbsp;– which included the use of long-range artillery, rocket forces and ground troops – near Dacheng Bay located in the southern Chinese province of Fujian which faces Taiwan.

A report by Reuters citing Taiwan security sources said that Beijing performs its landing drills in that area. However, China has not officially announced any new drills in that area while Chiu said releasing the information about Dacheng Bay was in line with the Taiwanese ministry’s principle of keeping the public informed.

“The threat posed by PLA’s (People’s Liberation Army) activities have led to an escalation of tension and damaged the regional security,” said the ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang on Thursday (Sep 21), adding that “closer the PLA’s aircraft are to Taiwan, the stronger our countermeasures will be.”

Taiwan’s defence ministry has also previously said that China typically performs large-scale exercises from July to September.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Repeated provocations’</h2>

On Monday (Sep 18), the Taiwanese defence ministry raised alarm after they tracked a record 103 PLA aircraft operating near the island in the 24 hours starting Sunday morning out of which 40 crossed the de facto median line.&nbsp;

A security source told Reuters that Beijing was most likely seeking to wear out Taiwan’s much smaller military with constant missions so close to Taiwan, especially with longer flights along the median line than before.&nbsp;

“China is seeking to normalise these activities and push Taiwan into a corner,” said the anonymous source, adding this risked miscalculation if Chinese ships or aircraft got too close and Taiwan opened fire.
