China on Wednesday (March 29) threatened to retaliate if United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy meets Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during her planned transit of the US next month, by saying any such move would be a provocation.

China on Wednesday (March 29) threatened to retaliate if United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy meets Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during her planned transit of the US next month, by saying any such move would be a provocation. Taiwanese President Tsai is due to depart on Wednesday for a trip to Guatemala and Belize that will see her transit through New York and Los Angeles. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, while it is not officially confirmed, Tsai is expected to meet US House Speaker McCarthy in California, at the end of her trip. Speaking to reporters in Beijing, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said that Tsai's transits to the US were not just her waiting at the airport or hotel, but for her to meet American officials and lawmakers. ALSO READ | In big blow to Taiwan, decades-old ally Honduras establishes diplomatic ties with China Fenglian said that if Tsai has contact with McCarthy, it would be another provocation that seriously violates the one-China principle, harms China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and destroys peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. "We firmly oppose this and will definitely take measures to resolutely fight back," the spokesperson added. The Taiwanese president's transits come at a time when US relations with China are at their worst level since Washington normalised ties with Beijing in 1979 and switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei. And President Tsai's trip also comes after Honduras said that it was switching recognition to China. Only 13 countries, including Guatemala and Belize, officially recognise Taiwan over China. Beijing has repeatedly warned US officials not to meet Tsai, viewing it as support for Taiwan's desire to be seen as a separate country. In August last year, China staged war games around Taiwan when then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei. China should not 'overreact' to stopover: Washington A senior US official said early Wednesday that China should not "overreact" to Taiwanese President Tsai's stopover in the US, the news agency AFP reported. "There's absolutely no reason for China to use that as a pretext to overreact or to engage in further coercion directed at Taiwan," the official, who did not wish to be identified, told reporters. ALSO READ | 'We are all Chinese', says former Taiwan president while visiting China The official added that the US would carry out a transit that is fully consistent with that policy and decades' worth of practice. The official also pointed out that Beijing would not pressurise Washington "to alter our longstanding practice" on such visits. In a huge political blow to Taiwan, China and Honduras announced the establishment of formal diplomatic relations on Sunday, as Taipei accused Beijing of using "coercion and intimidation" to lure away a few of its allies.

The announcement was made by China shortly after Tegucigalpa officially severed its diplomatic ties with Taipei.

"China and Honduras just established diplomatic relations," Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry, tweeted.

Earlier on Saturday, Honduras announced that it has ended its diplomatic relations with Taiwan, a move which drew Taipei's immediate rebuke as Tegucigalpa changed its allegiance to China.

Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina said that after receiving instructions from President Xiomara Castro he "has communicated to Taiwan the decision to cease diplomatic relations," stated a ministry in a statement.

The formal announcement of severing diplomatic ties came two days after FM Reina's Beijing trip to discuss bilateral diplomatic ties' establishment, and 11 days after the switch was first announced by Castro.

Self-ruled democratic Taiwan is considered by China as part of its own territory and which it plans to retake one day, even by force, if required. As per the 'One China' policy, countries are not allowed to recognise both Taipei and Beijing.

"The government of the Republic of Honduras recognises the existence of only 'one China' in the world, and that the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China," said the Honduras foreign ministry on Saturday.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. As of this date, the government of Honduras has communicated to Taiwan the rupture of diplomatic relations, committing to no longer having any relationship or contact of an official nature with Taiwan," it stated.

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen claimed that the switch was "part of a series of China's coercion and intimidation". "China has suppressed the international space of (Taiwan) for a long time, unilaterally endangering regional peace and stability," stated a statement released by her office.

Confirming the breaking of ties, Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu accused China has offered "financial incentives" to lure away the country's allies.

"After our negotiations with (Honduras) came to no avail we have decided to terminate diplomatic relations effective immediately to maintain our national sovereignty and dignity. We will end all cooperation projects and close our embassy,” he said.

Wu emphasised that Taiwan views itself as an "independent sovereign country". "Our country will not succumb to the pressure and intimidation by the Chinese authoritarian government, and we will uphold the values of freedom and democracy," he stated.

The move of Honduras came after ending negotiations with China on constructing a hydroelectric dam in the country. Wu announced that Taipei was ending ties with Honduras after the announcement of Reina.

The official account of the Taiwan's ministry of foreign affairs tweeted, “With deep regret we announce the termination of diplomatic relations with Honduras. 82 years of friendship & cooperation bringing real benefit to the peoples were dismissed by the Castro government. Taiwan remains unbowed & continues to work as a force for good in the world.”

Taiwan had recalled its ambassador to Honduras Vivia Chang who arrived home on Saturday (March 25) in protest against the expected switch in diplomatic recognition.

With the switch, Taiwan is left with 13 nations that recognise the country formally over China after losing many Latin American allies in recent years.

In big blow to Taiwan, decades-old ally Honduras establishes diplomatic ties with China

Honduras has established its diplomatic relations with China and it has ended its decades-old ties with Taiwan. The move is indicative of China's growing influence in the American continent and beyond.

Honduras ends diplomatic ties with Taiwan, establishes relations with China

Taiwan on Thursday (March 23) recalled its ambassador to Honduras over a visit by the Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina to China. In a statement, Taiwan's foreign ministry said that Honduras ignored more than 80 years of friendship when it sent its foreign minister to China, which seriously damaged the feelings of Taiwan's government and its people. "We have decided to immediately recall our ambassador in Honduras to express our strong dissatisfaction," the statement said as reported by the news agency AFP.

Taiwan's response comes as Honduran Foreign Minister Reina was heading to China to hold discussions on the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Chinese government.

Reina is accompanied by lawmaker Xiomara Zelaya, the daughter of President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, three government and diplomatic officials told AFP on Thursday. The Honduran delegation will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. However, Beijing has not confirmed the visit.

China has claimed democratically governed Taiwan as part of its territory to be retaken one day — by force, if necessary. Under Beijing's "One China" principle, no country may maintain official diplomatic relations with both China and Taiwan. Taipei also maintains a somewhat similar policy and has cut ties with countries that switched recognition to Beijing.

Last week, Honduran President Castro ordered Foreign Minister Reina to establish diplomatic relations with China, a move which was severely criticised by Taiwan. Reina had said that economic necessity and Taiwan's refusal to increase financial aid to Honduras were behind the decision to establish ties with Beijing.

If Honduras does formally switch recognition, it would leave Taiwan with just 13 countries with which it has formal diplomatic ties.

Taiwan has contingency plans for any moves by China during Prez Tsai Ing-wen's overseas visit: Minister

Taiwan’s Former President Ma Ying-jeou will visit China later this month, said his office on Sunday (March 19). The move will mark the first time that a former or current Taiwanese leader has visited since the defeated Republic of China government fled to the island in 1949. Notably, the Republic of China remains Taiwan’s official name.

The visit, which will take place between March 27 and April 7, also comes amid a rise in tensions between Beijing and Taipei. Ma who is also a senior member of Kuomintang (KMT) the opposition party in Taiwan has traditionally favoured China but has vehemently denied being ‘pro-Beijing’.

Notably, Ma also held a landmark meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Singapore in late 2015 shortly before incumbent Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen was elected. This also comes amid KMT seemingly increasing its engagement with China since both Beijing and Taipei have eased Covid-related restrictions.

Last month, the deputy chairman of the opposition party, Andrew Hsia visited Beijing and met senior Communist Party leader Wang Huning. The visit garnered significant criticism from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which accused KMT of being too close to Beijing and wanting to sell out Taiwan.

During his visit, Ma will visit five cities Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing and Shanghai, said his office, as per Reuters. The former Taiwanese president will also reportedly meet students and visit sites connected to World War II, the second Sino-Japanese War, and the 1911 revolution which overthrew the last Chinese emperor and led to the beginning of the Republic of China, said Ma’s office.

However, it is not clear if the former Taiwanese president will meet any Chinese officials or leaders including Xi. KMT has previously argued that it is important to keep open communication with China given the current tensions.

Beijing has declined to hold talks with Tsai accusing her of being a “separatist”. Tsai who was first elected president of Taiwan in 2016 has previously said that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future and rejected China’s claim on Taipei.

This comes as Beijing continues to maintain its military and political pressure for democratically-elected Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty and reiterated calls for reunification with the self-governing island.

Taiwan on Thursday (March 16) warned Honduras against taking aid from China no matter how indebted it was. Honduras' decision to seek official relations with China and cut them with Taiwan has led to concerns in Taipei. Speaking to reporters, Taiwan's foreign ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu said on Thursday, "Regarding the signs of alarm in the relationship between both countries (Taiwan and Honduras), the foreign ministry is still trying until now to maintain the friendship. This ministry and overseas embassies will keep doing their best."

Liu added that it was "absolutely untrue" that no efforts were made after receiving the news of Honduras' intentions to shift relations to China, adding that Taiwan would "absolutely not engage" in money competition with Beijing, the news agency Reuters reported.

"At the same time, we remind the Honduran government that it should not quench its thirst with poison, even if fully parched by debt obligations, and end up falling into China's debt trap," the foreign ministry spokesperson added.

'Don't quench thirst with poison': Taiwan's warning to Honduras against taking aid from China

The Central American country of Honduras will be severing its diplomatic ties with Taiwan to forge an official relationship with China, informed President Xiomara Castro on Wednesday.

The Central American country of Honduras will be severing its diplomatic ties with Taiwan to forge an official relationship with China, informed President Xiomara Castro on Wednesday. "I have instructed Chancellor Eduardo Reina to manage the opening of official relations with the People's Republic of China, as a sign of my determination to comply with the Government Plan and expand the borders freely in concert with the nations of the world," tweeted Castro. He instruido al Canciller Eduardo Reina, para que gestione la apertura de relaciones oficiales con la República Popular China, como muestra de mi determinación para cumplir el Plan de Gobierno y expandir las fronteras con libertad en el concierto de las naciones del mundo. — Xiomara Castro de Zelaya (@XiomaraCastroZ) March 14, 2023 × Speaking to reporters, Reina said the government needed to look at 'things very pragmatically and seek the best benefit for the Honduran people'. After the announcement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry released a statement expressing 'serious concerns' and urged Honuras to not fall into China's trap. “Taiwan is a sincere and reliable ally. Our country has always assisted Honduras in its national development to the best of our capabilities," said the ministry in a statement. "China’s only goal in developing relations with Honduras is to shrink our country’s international space, it has no sincere intentions to cooperate for the good of the Honduran people." If Honduras goes ahead with the decision, it will leave Taiwan with formal diplomatic ties to 13 countries only. Taiwan prepping for 'asymmetrical warfare' in face of China threat

Taking the adage 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst' to heart, Taiwan is focusing its attention on developing weapons and equipment, anticipating a blockade of the Taiwan Strait by China. The Taiwanese defence ministry mentioned the plan in a recently released report that is currently seeking parliamentary budget approval. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory but the island nation and its people have never accepted Beijing's control. However, after Beijing staged war games around the island, fired indiscriminate missiles and declared it a no-fly zone last year in an attempt to simulate how it would look to cut Taiwan off in case of a potential conflict, Taipei has taken evasive actions. The report added that Taiwan will be preparing parts for F-16 fighters, replenishing weapons, reviewing strategic fuel reserves and repairing abilities to 'strengthen combat continuity'. "Recently, the Communist military's exercise and training model has been adjusted from a single military type to joint operations of land, sea, air and rocket forces. It is adopting an actual war approach and shifting from training to combat preparation," read the report. During the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) congress last year, Xi asserted that the Taiwan matter was for the Chinese people only. “The resolution of the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese people themselves, to be decided by the Chinese people," said Xi. “We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort. According to the Pentagon, the US State Department approved the potential sale which includes 200 anti-aircraft Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and 100 AGM-88B HARM missiles that can take out land-based radar stations. "The proposed sale will contribute to the recipient's capability to provide for the defence of its airspace, regional security, and interoperability with the United States," the Pentagon said in a statement. Taiwan's defence ministry, meanwhile, said the missiles would "effectively defend the airspace to deal with threats and provocations from the Communist military" and would bolster defence stockpiles, the news agency Reuters reported. The ministry added that American defence companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies are the principal contractors. These companies have been sanctioned by China for selling weapons to Taiwan. This major military boost to Taiwan comes as it reported on Thursday a second-day large-scale Chinese air force incursions into its air defence identification zone. The defence ministry said that during the last 24 hours, it spotted 21 aircraft. Beijing opposes the arms sales The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that it firmly opposed the new US arms sale package for Taiwan and that Washington should stop sales to, and military contact with, Taipei. "China urges the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, stop arms sales to Taiwan and stop US-Taiwan military ties, and stop creating factors of tension in the Taiwan Strait," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said. "China will continue to take resolute and strong measures to firmly defend its sovereignty and security interests," she added. The foreign ministry spokesperson also emphasised that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory. "The root cause of the tension in the Taiwan Strait is the DPP authorities' pursuit of Taiwan independence and secession, as well as some countries' attempts to use Taiwan to control China," she said. Taiwan's military to get major boost, inks $619 million arms deal with US; China objects

Chinese jets and warships have once again been spotted near Taiwan as Beijing resumes its Taiwan war rehearsals. In a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Belarus' Lukashenko said his country supports Beijing in all 'sensitive issues, including Taiwan'.

Gravitas: China resumes Taiwan war rehearsals

Taiwan’s foreign ministry, on Saturday (February 25) said that the United States-led “Fab 4” or “Chip 4” semiconductor alliance held its first meeting of senior officials last week. The officials from four countries, Taiwan, the US, Japan and South Korea took part in the conversation which was centred around maintaining the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain. However, the ministry did not mention which officials were a part of the meeting.

The virtual meeting of senior officials from the “US-East Asia Semiconductor Supply Chain Resilience Working Group”, or “Fab 4” took place on February 16 after months of coordination, reported Reuters. The “Fab” in the name refers to a shorthand of an industry term for the fabrication plants where chips are made and used for virtually everything from fridges to fighter jets.

The countries members of this group in the Indo-Pacific region are home to some of the world’s largest contract chip makers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, South Korean memory chip giants Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and SK Hynix, with Japan being the supplier of materials and equipment required to make the semiconductors.

The first meeting of the group was held in September last year after a two-year global chip crunch which had prompted car manufacturers to halt production and exposed the larger supply chain issues.

In a statement, the Taiwanese foreign ministry said, “The focus of the discussions of the participating quartet at the meeting was mainly on how to maintain the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain and explore the possible future cooperation directions of all parties.”

It added, “As an important member of the Indo-Pacific region, our country also plays a key role in the global semiconductor industry, and has deep economic and trade relations with countries in the region.” This comes as the four countries have moved to boost cooperation and collaboration after growing threats from China.

‘Fab 4’ chip group’s senior officials discussed supply chain resilience at first meeting: Taiwan

After eliminating Covid-19 travel restrictions last year, Taiwan is seeking for measures to strengthen its economy. As the trade-dependent island struggles with a decline in exports, growth is predicted to decelerate in 2023, making it even more crucial to boost domestic demand and tourism.

Do you love to travel? Would you like to be rewarded to explore a new country when wanderlust kicks in? Taiwan is the latest country to join the list of nations giving incentives to travellers with an aim to boost the tourism industry. Such measures became necessary in the wake of slowdown in the global tourism industry. Earlier this week, Taiwan announced a slew of measures as part of its $82 million plan, according to a Bloomberg report. Around 500,000 tourists this year are expected to get cash or discount incentives as part of Taiwan's mega tourism revival plan.

Taiwan’s Premier Chen Chien-jen on Thursday (February 23) announced that the government aims to attract six million tourists in 2023, adding that by 2025, the country hopes to have 10 million visitors, CNN reported. After the country reopened in October last year, it attracted a total of 900,000 tourists in 2022, as per government figures. Taiwan aims to attract travellers from Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macao, as well as Europe and America.

This country announces $82 million plan to reward travellers for tourism boost

Taiwan could be sending its largest-ever number of military troops to the US for training purposes this year, South China Morning Post (SCMP) said quoting a report by country's semi-official Central News Agency.

As per the report, a joint combined arms battalion of at least 500 soldiers will travel to the US in the second half of the year. The battalion would consist of mainly the army’s 333rd Mechanised Infantry Brigade and 542nd Armour Brigade, the report added.

“This marks the first time troops at battalion level, typically consisting of around 500 soldiers, will travel to the US for training – rather than platoon (25-60 troops) or company (80-150) level as in the past,” the report said.

The training program between the two nations will reportedly be expanded in the coming months. The latest plans of sending hundreds of Taiwanese troops to US for training is deemed to counter China’s growing military power in the region.

US has been aiming to help Taiwan in the face of China's growing military buildup and its aggressive maneuvers. China has been sending planes near Taiwan, something which has only aggravated after then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island nation.

However, Taiwan's defence ministry has not made any comments over the reports. The country's Army Command Headquarters reportedly said that “all military exchanges with foreign forces are handled in accordance with planning."

“Trump signed a number of bills that were friendly to Taiwan, including the Taiwan Travel Act which promotes all levels of exchanges,” said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“The National Defence Authorisation Act for Fiscal Year 2018 specifically encourages exchanges of defence officials and military officers for the purposes of training and coordination, in addition to exchanges of senior military leaders.”

The sources added that this is not something new as Taiwan had sent military personnel to the US for training earlier as well, or the other way around. However, it was done in a hush-hush manner, they revealed.
