President Xi Jinping on Monday (Sep 30) asked the Chinese people to be ready to overcome all uncertainties as he asserted that Taiwan is China's sacred territory and Beijing opposes Taiwanese independence, sending a strong warning to "separatists" in his address on the eve of National Day.

“Chinese people will score more remarkable achievements and make greater contributions to the noble cause of peace and development of humanity,” Xi said while addressing a reception held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

China's National Day falls on October 1.

On the new journey in the new era, the central task of the ruling Communist Party and the country is building China into a strong country and achieving national rejuvenation on all fronts by pursuing Chinese modernisation, Xi was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Heading the Party, the military, and the Presidency, 71-year-old Xi is currently in his unprecedented third five-year term in power, unlike his predecessors, who relinquished their posts adhering to the party's convention of restricting their tenures to two five-year terms.

“Be prepared for the future and resolutely overcome all uncertainties,” the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post quoted Xi as saying in his address, in an apparent reference to the growing strategic rivalry with the US.

He also said Taiwan was “China's sacred territory” and “the people on both sides of the [Taiwan] Strait are connected by blood”.

“We must … promote the spiritual harmony of compatriots on both sides of the strait, and resolutely oppose Taiwan independence separatist activities,” Xi said, the Post reported.

China regards Taiwan as part of the mainland, and Xi in recent years has been aggressively highlighting reunification of the self-ruled island with massive military buildup, though he says through peaceful means.

China has intensified its campaign against Taiwan “separatists” after pro-independence William Lai Ching-te was elected President of Taiwan this year.

On the economic front, Xi pledged to press ahead with reform and opening up for the second largest economy, which currently faces a continued slowdown weighed down by a host of internal issues, especially, the stagnant domestic consumption and bankrupt property market, resulting in huge financial losses besides high-tariffs imposed on Chinese Electric Vehicles and batteries imposed by the US and EU.

"There will definitely be difficulties and obstacles … [but] no difficulties can stop the pace of the Chinese people's progress,” Xi said.

His comments come on the back of a slew of measures announced by the Chinese government to regain economic momentum, including interest rate cuts.

Advancing unprecedented modernisation steadily is the best way to celebrate the anniversary of the PRC, Xi stressed.

To advance Chinese modernisation, it is imperative to always uphold the core role of the Communist Party in exercising overall leadership and coordinating the efforts of all sides, unswervingly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, deepen reform across the board and expand opening up, uphold a people-centred approach, and remain committed to peaceful development, Xi said.

Over 3,000 Chinese and foreign guests attended the reception.

He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to friendly countries and international friends who care about and support the development of the PRC.

Earlier, he, along with other state and party leaders, paid floral tributes to fallen heroes to mark Martyrs' Day at the sprawling Tiananmen Square in central Beijing.

The Martyrs' Day was observed on Monday ahead of the 75th National Day of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Xi, along with Premier Li Qiang and other leaders, was joined by representatives from all walks of life to pay tributes to the monument built in memory of martyrs of the revolutionary struggle during the 19th and 20th centuries leading to the formation of the PRC on October 1, 1949, headed by the CPC founder Mao Zedong.

China will be shut down for a week from Tuesday to mark the national day holidays.

Marking the occasion, Xi on Sunday awarded the highest state honours to several Chinese veterans.

He also presented China's Friendship Medal to Dilma Rousseff, former Brazilian president and the Chair of the Shanghai-based New Development Bank of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

Lauding Rousseff as an outstanding representative of China's old and good friends, Xi said the Chinese people will never forget international friends who have significantly contributed to the country's development and the friendship between the Chinese and foreign people.

Xi said the CPC has led the Chinese people in creating the twin miracles of rapid economic growth and long-term social stability.

China is now in a crucial period for building a great modern socialist country in all respects and achieving national rejuvenation through modernisation, he said.

"All party members and people of all ethnic groups should take heroes and role models as examples, unite and strive forward to form a mighty force to build a strong China," Xi said.

China has recently simulated an invasion of Taiwan. A new documentary aired on China's state television provides a rare glimpse into China's preparations for the attack on Taiwan. Aired Monday night by the state broadcaster, the documentary reveals China's potential war strategy, involving ground forces, the navy, and the rocket brigade. The footage leaves no doubt about China's intentions to launch an assault on Taiwan. What does the plan look like?

Taiwan's top official in charge of China-related matters on Thursday (September 12) declared that the island, which is democratically governed, will never bow to the increasing pressure from a "more aggressive" Beijing.

Escalating tensions in Taiwan

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has long insisted that it will not rule out the use of force to bring the self-governed island under its control. In recent years, Beijing has increased its military and political pressure on Taiwan, with frequent deployments of warplanes, drones, and naval vessels in the area around the island.

Chiu Chui-cheng, head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, responsible for handling China issues, stated on Thursday that Beijing's efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty pose a significant threat to peace and stability in the region.

"Despite this unprecedented pressure, our resolve to protect our sovereignty and democratic system has never been stronger. This is our bottom line," Chiu said during a speech in English at a defence forum in Taipei.

He continued, "On this point, there is no room for compromise. We never succumb to the sabre-rattling and intensifying pressure from China."

Chiu also warned that Chinese President Xi Jinping's approach to Taiwan is likely to become even more assertive and aggressive, driven by his goal of achieving "national unification" with Taiwan. "This ambition is no doubt the root causes of risks in the Taiwan Strait," he explained.

China continues to maintain a strong military presence around Taiwan and in the nearby South China Sea, reinforcing its territorial claims. On Thursday, Taiwan's defence ministry reported that 29 Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels, and one official ship had been spotted over a 24-hour period, ending at 6 a.m. local time.

In May, just three days after Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te assumed office, China conducted military drills simulating a blockade of the island. Lai, like his predecessor Tsai Ing-wen, firmly rejects China's claim over Taiwan. Beijing has labelled him a "dangerous separatist."

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) has tracked 13 Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels and two official ships operating around Taiwan from 6 am (local time) on Tuesday to 6 am (local time) on Wednesday.

According to Taiwan's MND, seven of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's southwestern and eastern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).

In response to Chinese incursions, Taiwan sent aircraft and naval ships and deployed coastal-based missile systems to monitor PLA activity.

Taking to X, Taiwan's MND stated, "13 PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 2 official ships operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 7 of the aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's southwestern and eastern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded accordingly."

China has increased its military activities around Taiwan, including regular air and naval incursions into Taiwan's ADIZ and military exercises near the island.

Since September 2020, China has intensified its use of gray zone tactics by increasing the number of military aircraft and naval vessels operating near Taiwan, according to a Taiwan News report.

Gray zone tactics are considered "an effort or series of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that attempts to achieve one's security objectives without resort to direct and sizable use of force," the report said.

In an interview on a local tv network, Lai emphasised that China's goal of annexing Taiwan is not motivated by issues of territorial integrity.

Supporting his statement, he questioned, "If the issue is truly about maintaining territorial integrity, then why don't they reclaim the land ceded to Russia under the Treaty of Aigun?," referring to the 1858 agreement between the Qing dynasty and the Russian Empire, which ceded approximately 600,000 square kilometres of land in Manchuria to Russia, Central News Agency (CNA) reported.

Lai Ching-te reiterated that Taiwan "can never agree to the 'One China' principle of the '1992 consensus'" because doing so would mean "effectively ceding Taiwan's sovereignty" to China. Furthermore, he also affirmed his commitment to continuing the policies of his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen. This includes modernising military training to make the armed forces "more confident" and advancing Taiwan's submarine-building programme.

Taiwan scrambles jets, naval ships after detecting massive Chinese military activity

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has challenged China to take back land from Russia if the Xi Jinping regime truly believes it has a claim over the island nation.

China claims self-ruled democratic Taiwan as a part of its territory with Jinping not renouncing the use of force to bring the island under control. Beijing is of the view that Taiwan had been part of China since ancient times but was taken away by Japan during the "century of humiliation" - a period between 1839 and 1949 when China was subjected to routine defeats and subjugation.

“If it is for the sake of territorial integrity, why doesn’t it take back the lands occupied by Russia that were signed over in the treaty of Aigun? Russia is now at its weakest, right?,” said Lai during an interview.

“You can ask Russia (for the land back) but you don’t. So it’s obvious they don’t want to invade Taiwan for territorial reasons,” Lai said.

Lai was referring to the 1858 treaty in which Russia annexed about one million sq km of Chinese territory, including Haishengwei – today known as Vladivostok.

Lai, who was elected president in January, said that Beijing's true plans for 'invading' Taiwan were geopolitical as Jinping wants to change the world order in his favour.

Chinese officials have repeatedly attended economic forums in the far-east city of Vladivostok and there have been no major claims from the Politburo to annex the region.

However, earlier this year, nationalist social media users on Weibo, an X-like Chinese social media platform, demanded that Russia return Vladivostok to China. The claims were intensified after Putin in an interview with former Fox News anchor, Tucker Carlson, reflected on how Ukraine was part a Russian territory since the beginning.

It further prompted the Taiwan army to order 1,985 more Stringer missiles from the US for approximately NT$55.54 billion, Taiwanese local newspaper Liberty Times reported. According to the MND's 2025 budget report, the Army will get 549 launch systems and 549 identification and friend of foe (IFF) systems. Navy and Army missiles are scheduled to be delivered by 2031. Although the Army has not confirmed whether these purchases are included in the Army's procurement plan. Taiwan sends letters to US Earlier in March, the Taiwanese army highlighted that they had sent 11 letters to the US, urging the delivery of 250 Stinger missiles, which they requested earlier as well. China has increased its military activities across Taiwan, including regular air and naval incursions into Taiwan's ADIZ and military exercises near the island. Earlier on Sunday, Taiwan's MND detected 10 PLA aircraft, seven Chinese Navy vessels, and two official ships operating around the nation. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that China's continued use of military aircraft and warships to intrude into Taiwan and Japan's air defence identification zones and exclusive economic zones has increased regional tensions. Taiwan issues 8 year prison sentence to father, son in China spy case

While leaders of the Pacific Islands have rejected a China backed call to break ties with Taiwan saying the regional block would continue a decades old policy of Engagement. Members of the Pacific Islands forum who have gathered in Tonga for an annual Summit batted aside a push by one of Beijing's allies to stop treating Taiwan as a development partner. Watch in for more details!

Pacific Island forum split between support to China and Taiwan

China lacks the ability to "fully" invade Taiwan as it does not have the equipment, but is bringing online advanced new weapons and has other options to threaten Taiwan, such as inspecting foreign cargo ships, the island's defence ministry said.

China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has ramped up military and political pressure over the past five years to assert its claims, which Taipei strongly rejects.

China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. The government of the defeated Republic of China fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with Mao Zedong's communists, and no peace treaty or armistice has ever been signed.

In an annual threat assessment of China sent to lawmakers on Friday, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, Taiwan's defence ministry said Beijing continues to hone skills such as joint command operations.

"However, the use of tactics and strategies against Taiwan is still limited by the natural geographical environment of the Taiwan Strait and insufficient landing equipment and logistic capabilities," it said.

China "is not yet fully possessed of the formal combat capabilities for a comprehensive invasion of Taiwan".

But China is speeding up the development of a slew of new weapons, such as the H-20 bomber and hypersonic missiles and beefing up the number of nuclear warheads while trialling new tactics, the ministry said.

The report said that in May when China staged war games around Taiwan shortly after Lai Ching-te took office as the new president, Chinese coast guard ships were sent for the first time on interception and inspection drills off the east coast.

China's aim with the drills was to practice cutting off communication with the outside world and blockade Taiwan, and boarding foreign cargo ships is an option China could take, short of open conflict, the ministry said.

The waters around Taiwan, including the Taiwan Strait, are busy international shipping lanes.

China's defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At a regular news briefing in Beijing on Thursday, the ministry said that as long as Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party "engages in 'Taiwan independence' (efforts), there will be no peace".

"The more they provoke, the faster they will perish," spokesperson Wu Qian told reporters.

Taiwan's proposed defence spending will rise faster than expected economic growth next year, as Taipei builds more missiles, submarines and other weapons to deter China.

President Lai, whom China calls a "separatist", has repeatedly offered talks with Beijing, but has been rebuffed. He says only Taiwan's people can decide their future.

"Peace achieved by strength is true peace," Lai told officers at the defence ministry on Friday.

"We will continue to improve our self-defence capabilities and show the world that we are united as a nation and are determined to protect our country."
