Taiwan On Alert Amid Chinese Drills: Analysts Warn Of Potential Conflict Escalation In The Region

China said on Monday it would punish and sanction Taiwanese businessman Robert Tsao and lawmaker Puma Shen for their alleged criminal and pro-Taiwan independence activities.

In a statement, the Taiwan Affairs Office said the "Black Bear Academy" that both men were associated with was seeking to incite separatism that would endanger cross-strait ties.

Tsao is one of Taiwan's richest men who pledged two years ago to provide millions to two civilian defence training programmes, including the Black Bear Academy. Shen, a lawmaker with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), helps run Black Bear Academy training.

The State Council-level Taiwan Affairs Office said it would include Tsao and Shen on a list of "Taiwan independence" diehards and impose sanctions on them and the academy.

The move comes as China on Monday launched fresh military drills around the democratically governed island that China claims as its own. Beijing said the drills were a warning against "separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces" while denouncing Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te of the DPP.

"This is one of China's many acts of intimidation against Taiwan, including economic coercion, military threats...," a DPP spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters.

"These irrational acts will only further hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people and damage cross-strait relations."

Tsao and Shen would be barred from travelling to China, Hong Kong and Macau, the statement added, while all affiliated enterprises and businesses linked to the pair would not be allowed to "seek profit" in China.

"The Black Bear Academy, with the support of the DPP authorities and external interference forces, has brazenly cultivated violent Taiwan independence elements and openly engaged in "Taiwan independence" separatist activities under the guise of lectures, training, and outdoor drills," the statement read, citing spokesman Chen Binhua.

Shen, speaking to reporters, described this as a provocation from China, rather than the other way around and said it reflected Beijing's great sensitivity towards any civilian defence initiatives in Taiwan.

"They will definitely use the threat of (economic) sanctions to conduct further grey zone warfare against Taiwan," he said.

The Black Bear Academy, also known as the Kuma Academy, said in a statement the moves are "nothing more than politically motivated attempts to undermine our mission and silence those who support Taiwan's right to self-determination and democratic values."

Tsao is the founder and former chairman of chip maker, United Microelectronics Corp, and has said he hoped his programmes would help train millions of "civilian warriors" through a mix of survival, military and counter surveillance, and technology courses.

Tsao and UMC gave no immediate response to Reuters' requests for comment.

China has not ruled out using military force to bring Taiwan under its control. While it advocates for peaceful reunification, Beijing reserves the right to act if Taiwan declares independence or if foreign powers intervene. This stance stems from China's view of Taiwan as a breakaway province, despite Taiwan's self-governance since 1949, and remains a source of regional tension.

China Hasn't Ruled Out Using Force To Bring Taiwan Under Control

Taiwanese authorities have seized several Chinese fishing boats and detained nine crew members for illegally entering Taiwan's waters. The vessels were intercepted by the Taiwanese Coast Guard during routine patrols, amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China. The crew members are being held for questioning, and the boats have been impounded pending further investigation. Taiwan has been increasing maritime security efforts to curb illegal fishing and assert its territorial claims, particularly as relations with China remain strained. This incident adds to the ongoing disputes in the region over fishing rights and sovereignty.

Signalling further engagement with New Delhi, Taiwan's de facto ambassador to India, Baushuan Ger has said a new Taiwanese office will open in Mumbai on October 16.

Signalling further engagement with New Delhi, Taiwan's de facto ambassador to India, Baushuan Ger has said a new Taiwanese office will open in Mumbai on October 16. Taiwan has its de facto embassy or Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India (TECC) in Delhi and one de facto consulate or office in the southern city of Chennai. Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal, Ger, representative to TECC said that with this new mission "we can serve more Taiwanese and Indian businesses, trade, and economic ties between our societies". The establishment of the Taipei Economic Culture Centre in Mumbai is part of the expansion of Taiwan's presence in India under its new southbound policy. With the opening of the new office, the number of Taiwanese diplomats will increase to 32, with plans to get more Taiwanese diplomats to India. The development comes even as India, and Taiwan firm up ties in semiconductors, mobility and many Taiwanese teachers come to India to teach Mandarin. Meanwhile, Taiwan's National Day was celebrated in Delhi on Tuesday (Oct 8), but no Indian government representatives were present, as New Delhi does not officially recognise Taiwan as a separate country. Former Indian MP Sujeet Kumar was present at the national day. Foreign diplomats from nations that adhere to the "One China" policy also chose to skip the event. The full interview with Baushuan Ger: Sidhant Sibal: When are you going to open the new office in India? Baushuan Ger: On October 16, we will open our third mission in India, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in Mumbai. We hope that through this new mission, we can serve more Taiwanese and Indian businesses, trade, and economic ties between our societies. Sidhant Sibal: Semiconductor has been a key pillar of ties... Baushuan Ger: Semiconductor is one of the major cooperation between our two sides. We are very happy to see Tata and Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) work together in Gujarat and we hope that it will be a precursor to many similar projects. Watch | Taiwan gives befitting reply as China questions Taiwan-India ties × Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India-Taiwan ties? Taiwan celebrated its National Day in India. Baushuan Ger: We are very positive about Taiwan-India relations, in the past, now and in the future. We have the celebration of our national day and we hope that we receive more similar happy returns in the future. Sidhant Sibal: How is Taiwan helping to develop Mandarin language skills in India? Baushuan Ger: We have 36 Taiwan education centres in India, across Indian campuses. Our desire is to have more Taiwan education centres in India. That will be a very useful bridge between Taiwan and India. Through these centres, we came to promote Mandarin teaching and learning in India and send more Indian students to Taiwan to study, especially in STEM disciplines. They can come back to serve as a bridge.

It is ‘impossible’ for the People's Republic of China to become Taiwan's motherland because Taiwan has older political roots, the island's President Lai Ching-te said on Saturday.

Lai, who took office in May, is condemned by Beijing as a "separatist". He rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, saying that the island is a country called the Republic of China, which traces its origins back to the 1911 revolution that overthrew the last imperial dynasty.

The republican government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with Mao Zedong's communists who set up the People's Republic of China, which continues to claim the island as its "sacred" territory.

Speaking at a concert ahead of Taiwan's national day celebrations on Oct. 10, Lai noted that the People's Republic had celebrated its 75th anniversary on Oct. 1, and in a few days it would be the Republic of China's 113th birthday.

"Therefore, in terms of age, it is absolutely impossible for the People's Republic of China to become the 'motherland' of the Republic of China's people. On the contrary, the Republic of China may be the motherland of the people of the People's Republic of China who are over 75 years old," Lai added, to applause.

"One of the most important meanings of these celebrations is that we must remember that we are a sovereign and independent country," he said.

Last month, Lai said that if China's claims on Taiwan were about territorial integrity then it should also take back land from Russia signed over by the last Chinese dynasty in the 19th century.
