Paraguay cancelled a low-level Chinese diplomat's visa and ordered him to leave, the South American country's foreign ministry said on Thursday, after the envoy appeared to coax lawmakers to reconsider Paraguay's friendly relationship with Taiwan.
The foreign ministry accused Xu Wei of "interference in domestic affairs," while Taiwan's embassy in the country accused him of having "infiltrated" Paraguay to try to undermine its relationship with Chinese-claimed Taiwan.

The ministry did not specify what Xu's interference had been but said he had violated the terms of his visa after travelling to Paraguay as part of a Chinese group for a UNESCO meeting. Xu was given 24 hours to leave the country.
In comments recorded at Paraguay's Congress and shared with Reuters, Xu urged Paraguay to recognize China over Taiwan, saying that the choice would benefit the soy-producing nation.

Paraguay expels Chinese envoy over Taiwan 'interference'

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Thursday called on like-minded governments to "safeguard democracy" during a visit to US territory Guam, his second stop on American soil in a Pacific tour that has angered Beijing. &nbsp;

Lai's week-long trip is aimed at shoring up international support for Taiwan as China maintains military pressure on the island and seeks to isolate it by poaching its few remaining allies and blocking it from global forums.

Taiwan calls itself a sovereign nation, but Beijing insists the democratic island is part of its territory and opposes any official exchanges with it.

Lai arrived in Guam on Wednesday night following visits to Pacific island nations Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands, after a stop in the US state of Hawaii.

In Honolulu, Lai discussed "China's military threats" towards Taiwan during a call with former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi, and met with US government officials and members of Congress -- drawing a barrage of criticism from Beijing.

Landing in Guam, Lai was greeted on the tarmac by the island's Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, Ingrid Larson from the Washington office of the de facto US embassy in Taiwan, and others.

Like most countries, the United States does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but Washington is Taipei's most important backer and biggest supplier of arms.

At a banquet for Lai on Thursday, Larson said the United States would keep helping Taiwan "bolster its self-defense capabilities" and its "ability to protect itself against coercion".

Earlier, at Guerrero's official residence, Lai warned of "authoritarian expansionism" and urged like-minded governments to "unite and collaborate to safeguard democracy, peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region".

In her remarks, Guerrero said the partnership between Guam and Taiwan was "more crucial than ever" in the face of a "dynamic global economy".

"Taiwanese investments have significantly contributed to Guam's growth, creating opportunities for our people, while fostering mutual prosperity," Guerrero said.

Lai also addressed Guam's parliament -- a first for a Taiwanese president, his office said -- and will later Thursday travel to the Pacific island nation of Palau, the final stop of his trip.&nbsp;

Extending his "sincerest gratitude" to lawmakers for supporting Taiwan's access to the international arena, Lai said Taiwan and Guam were "like family".&nbsp;

China threats&nbsp;

Palau, Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands are among 12 nations that still recognise Taiwan diplomatically, including the Vatican, after China convinced others to dump Taipei in favour of Beijing.

Lai's Pacific tour has sparked fury in China, which on Tuesday vowed to defend its "national sovereignty" and "territorial integrity".

"The Taiwan issue is the core of China's core interests," foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said when asked whether Beijing could launch another round of military drills around the self-ruled island in response to the trip.

Taiwan faces the constant threat of a military attack by China, which regularly deploys fighter jets and warships around the island to press its claims, and Beijing has not ruled out using force to bring the island under its control.

China and Taiwan have been governed separately since 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces were defeated by Mao Zedong's communist fighters and fled to the island.

In his first public speech of the trip on US soil, Lai said Saturday there was a need to "fight together to prevent war", warning there were "no winners" from conflict.

Lai will wrap up his trip on Friday.&nbsp;

Taiwan's Lai kicks off visit to US territory Guam

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said in the United States on Saturday that we have to "fight together to prevent war", as he kicked off a week-long tour of the Pacific that has sparked fiery rhetoric from Beijing.

Taiwan faces the constant threat of a military attack by China, which it considers part of its territory and regularly deploys fighter jets and warships around the self-ruled island to press its claims.

Washington is Taipei's most important partner and biggest provider of weapons, but maintains a "strategic ambiguity" when it comes to putting boots on the ground to defend the island from China.

Speaking at a dinner in the US island state of Hawaii on Saturday, Lai said there were "no winners" from conflict and "we have to fight, fight together to prevent war."

Lai earlier received a standing ovation as he walked down a red carpet for the gathering with US government officials, state politicians, members of Congress, and Taiwanese expatriates.

He said the US flag and Hawaii state flag given to him as a gift "symbolise the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and the United States and lays the foundation for further cooperation in the future."

The chairperson of the American Institute in Taiwan, the body that serves as the de facto US embassy, said the partnership between Washington and Taipei was "rock solid".

"The opportunity for you to engage with thought leaders, the diaspora's community and state and local leaders is invaluable, and I know will contribute to further strengthening the rock solid US-Taiwan partnership," Laura Rosenberger said in a pre-recorded video played at the dinner.&nbsp;

Like most countries, Washington does not recognize Taiwan diplomatically but maintains close unofficial ties.

Beijing opposes any international recognition of Taiwan and its claim to be a sovereign state and especially bristles at official contact between the island and the United States.

In a statement, China's foreign ministry said it "strongly condemns" the United States for Lai's stopover and that it had "lodged serious protests with the US".

"China will closely follow the developments and take resolute and strong measures to defend our nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity," it said.

Lai, who is travelling abroad for the first time since taking office in May, was welcomed with red carpets, flower garlands and "alohas" as he began the two-day stopover in Hawaii.

Looking relaxed in a Hawaiian shirt, Lai flitted around, visiting a Pacific island history museum, an emergency management centre and the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbour.

On his arrival, he was given the "red carpet treatment" on the tarmac of Honolulu's international airport, according to his office, which said it was the first time a Taiwanese president had been given such a welcome.

He was met by Ingrid Larson, managing director in Washington of the AIT, Hawaii Governor Josh Green, and others.

Taiwanese government officials have previously stopped over on US soil during visits to the Pacific or Latin America, angering China, which has sometimes responded with military drills around the island.

<h2>'We are all Team Taiwan'</h2>

After Hawaii, Lai will visit Taiwan's allies the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau -- the only Pacific island nations among the 12 countries that recognize Taiwan's claim to statehood -- and stop over for one night in the US territory of Guam.

Lai said shortly before take-off in Taipei that the trip "ushered in a new era of values-based democracy" and thanked the US government for "helping to make this trip a smooth one".&nbsp;

He said he wanted to "continue to expand cooperation and deepen partnerships with our allies based on the values of democracy, peace and prosperity."

"I once again emphasize that we are all Team Taiwan. We all work together, and we can successfully achieve our goals," Lai told reporters on board the plane.

An AFP journalist is travelling with the president for the duration of the trip.

In a swift response to news of Lai's trip on Thursday, Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China's defense ministry said: "We firmly oppose official interaction with China's Taiwan region in any form" and vowed to "resolutely crush" any attempts for Taiwan independence.

Lai's trip follows the US approval on Friday of a proposed sale to Taiwan of spare parts for F-16s and radar systems, as well as communications equipment, in deals valued at $385 million in total.

The Taiwan president's trip comes as Republican US President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January.&nbsp;

During his campaign, Trump caused jitters by suggesting Taiwan should pay the United States for its defence.

We have to 'fight together to prevent war', Taiwan's Lai says in US

Lithuania said on Friday it was expelling three Chinese embassy staff as ties between the Baltic country and Beijing fray over Taiwan support and the suspected involvement of a Chinese ship in sea cables damage.

Two Baltic Sea telecommunications cables were severed earlier this month in Swedish territorial waters, including one running from the Swedish island of Gotland to Lithuania.

Suspicions have been directed at a Chinese ship -- the Yi Peng 3 -- which tracking sites said had sailed over the cables around the time they were cut.

On Friday, Lithuania's foreign ministry said in a statement that three Chinese staff members "have been declared undesirable in the country".

The ministry did not give the precise reasons for the expulsion, citing only "activities which violate the Vienna Convention and the legislation of the Republic of Lithuania".

On Wednesday, Lithuania said it was setting up a joint team with Sweden and Finland to investigate the damaged cables, with the support of Eurojust, the European Union's agency for criminal justice cooperation.

China has denied any responsibility in the matter and said Friday it was "willing to work" with a probe.

Ties between Vilnius and Beijing had already been tense after Lithuania in 2021 allowed Taiwan to open a de facto embassy under the island's name.

It marked a departure from the common diplomatic practice of using the name of the capital Taipei to avoid angering China, which claims the island as part of its territory.

Lithuania kicks out three Chinese embassy staff amidst tensions over Taiwan

The United States has approved the proposed sale of spare parts for fighter jets and radar systems as well as communications equipment to&nbsp;Taiwan, in deals valued at $385 million, a US agency said Friday.

While Washington does not have official diplomatic relations with Taipei, it remains the island's most important backer and biggest arms supplier.

The proposed sale of the F-16 and radar system parts consists of equipment in existing US military stocks and was worth an estimated $320 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement, with deliveries estimated to start in 2025.

"This proposed sale serves US national, economic and security interests by supporting the recipient's continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability," the DSCA said.

"The proposed sale will improve the recipient's ability to meet current and future threats by maintaining the operational readiness of the recipient's fleet of F-16 aircraft."

A separate sale involving follow-on support and equipment for a tactical communications system was worth $65 million, the DSCA said.

Taiwan's defence ministry on Saturday "expressed gratitude" for the latest arms sales.

The items "will help maintain the combat readiness of the Air Force's F-16 aircraft equipment and bolster our air defense," the ministry&nbsp;said in a statement.

"Taiwan&nbsp;and the United States will continue to consolidate our security partnership."

The foreign ministry said it was the 18th time that President Joe Biden's administration had announced arms sales to the island.

Taiwan&nbsp;was determined to strengthen its defences in the face of China's military pressure and "grey zone harassment," it said in a statement, referring to tactics that fall short of an act of war.

Taiwan said Monday it had detected a Chinese balloon over waters northwest of the island, the first reported since April, as Beijing maintains pressure on Taipei to accept its claims of sovereignty.

Taiwan said Monday it had detected a Chinese balloon over waters northwest of the island, the first reported since April, as Beijing maintains pressure on Taipei to accept its claims of sovereignty. Communist China claims democratic Taiwan as part of its territory and has refused to renounce the use of force to bring it under its control. Beijing regularly deploys fighter jets, drones and warships around Taiwan, and occasionally balloons, as it keeps up military pressure. The latest balloon was spotted at 6:21 pm (1021 GMT) on Sunday about 111 kilometres (69 miles) northwest of Keelung City at an altitude of 33,000 feet (10,058 metres), said the defence ministry, which releases daily data on China's military presence around Taiwan. It entered the island's air defence identification zone and disappeared at 8:15 pm, the ministry said. Also read: Ex-British soldier captured in Russia while fighting for Ukraine: Report As well as the balloon, 12 Chinese military aircraft and seven warships were detected around Taiwan in the 24 hours to 6:00 am Monday, the ministry said. In the run-up to Taiwan's January presidential election, balloons crossed the sensitive waters separating Taiwan and China day and night, with some floating above the island. Taiwan has described the balloons as a form of "grey zone" harassment -- a tactic that falls short of an act of war. China has previously brushed off allegations it sends balloons over Taiwan, accusing Taipei of trying to raise tensions with the mainland. Balloons from China became a politically fraught topic in early 2023 when the United States shot down what it called a spy balloon. The huge balloon, which carried a large payload of electronics, flew over sensitive US military installations and prompted concerns Beijing was scooping up vital intelligence. Beijing has said it was a civilian airship blown off-course. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Taiwan journalist calls Donald Trump 'convicted felon', video removed after government order

Stellantis and its Chinese partner Leapmotor have abandoned plans to manufacture their second electric vehicle model at Stellantis's Polish facility, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The joint venture is now evaluating alternative production locations for the B10 electric crossover, including Stellantis's Opel factory in Eisenach, Germany, and its Trnava plant in Slovakia. This strategic pivot comes in the wake of Chinese government pressure on domestic automakers to reconsider investments in EU countries that supported recent tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.

The decision follows a crucial October 10 meeting where China's Ministry of Commerce reportedly instructed Chinese automakers to halt major investment plans in EU nations that backed the tariff proposal. Just four days after this meeting, both companies showcased the B10 EV at the Paris Motor Show, celebrating it as a milestone in their partnership, despite the brewing tensions behind the scenes.

The situation highlights the complex interplay between trade policy and automotive manufacturing strategies. Poland, along with nine other EU members, supported the implementation of tariffs up to 45% on imported Chinese-made EVs. In contrast, Germany and Slovakia, now under consideration as alternative production sites, were among the five EU members that opposed these tariffs, which took effect on October 30.

Currently, Stellantis's Tychy plant in Poland manufactures the T03 compact EV using components shipped from China. The status of this existing production arrangement remains unclear, as does any potential impact on employment at the facility. Sources indicate that while Germany is being considered as an alternative location, it would involve higher operational costs due to increased utility and labour expenses.

The B10 represents a crucial element in Leapmotor’s international expansion strategy, being the first of its B series EVs designed specifically for markets outside China. The company began its European sales operations in September, marking a significant step in its global ambitions. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares had previously positioned the partnership with Leapmotor and the B10 project as key to delivering "high-tech, affordable" EVs to consumers beyond China's borders.

The joint venture structure, with Stellantis holding a 51% stake and Leapmotor controlling the remaining 49% through Leapmotor International, underscores the significance of this collaboration for both parties. Under Chinese regulations, companies must obtain Beijing's approval for overseas direct investments, adding another layer of complexity to international manufacturing decisions.

Neither Stellantis nor Leapmotor have officially commented on the production site change, and representatives from the Chinese government, including the State Council Information Office and Ministry of Commerce, have not responded to requests for comment. Similarly, the Polish industry ministry, German and Slovak governments, and Opel have yet to provide official statements on the matter.

Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited's (TSMC's) investment plan in the United States remains unchanged, the company said, responding to a question on the election of Republican Donald Trump as the next US president according to a detailed report by Reuters.

"Our investment plan in the US remains unchanged," the company said late on Thursday in an emailed statement, without elaborating, the Reuters report explained further.

Basic facts about TSMC<o:p></o:p>

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) is a Taiwanese multinational corporation specializing in semiconductor contract manufacturing and design. It is the world’s most valuable semiconductor company, the largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, and the largest company in Taiwan.

TSMC's headquarters and main operations are based in the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan. While the Taiwanese government is the largest individual shareholder, the majority of the company is owned by foreign investors.

Further, in 2023, TSMC was ranked 44th on the Forbes Global 2000 list. In 2022, Taiwan's integrated circuit exports totalled $184 billion, accounting for nearly 25 per cent of the country’s GDP, with TSMC representing about 30 per cent of the Taiwan Stock Exchange’s main index.

How much is TSMC investing in the US?<o:p></o:p>

TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major supplier to companies including Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), is investing $65 billion in new factories in the US state of Arizona. Trump, while on the campaign trail, accused Taiwan of stealing American semiconductor business, detailed the Reuters report further.

In April TSMC's US unit was awarded a $6.6 billion subsidy for advanced semiconductor production in Phoenix, Arizona, in a preliminary agreement with the Commerce Department.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, GlobalFoundries (NASDAQ:GFS) and at least one other chipmaker are poised to receive their final Chips and Science Act awards from the Biden administration, two people briefed on the matter said this week.

TSMC's shares have so far batted off concern about Trump's election, and have performed strongly so far this year given soaring demand for artificial intelligence.

On Thursday, the company's American Depositary Receipts closed up 4.1 per cent, after Nvidia's shares rallied to a record high, making the chipmaker the first company in history to surpass a stock market value of $3.6 trillion. Market participants and investors will closely follow these developments, as they will help investors make informed investment decisions.

Taiwan's Kong-Rey: Fire Department Put the Death Toll at Two

Typhoon&nbsp;Kong-rey&nbsp;slammed into Taiwan on Thursday as one of the biggest storms to hit the island in decades, whipping up 10-metre waves, triggering floods and claiming at least one life.

Packing maximum wind speeds of 184 kilometres per hour (114 miles per hour),&nbsp;Kong-rey&nbsp;made landfall in eastern Taiwan on Thursday afternoon, the Central Weather Administration said.

It was the same strength as Typhoon Gaemi, which was the most powerful storm to hit Taiwan in eight years when it made landfall in July, but&nbsp;Kong-rey's radius of 320 kilometres made it the biggest in nearly three decades.

Taiwan is accustomed to frequent tropical storms from July to October, but the weather agency said it was unusual for such a powerful typhoon to hit this late in the year.&nbsp;

Scientists have warned climate change is increasing the intensity of storms, leading to heavier rains and flash floods and stronger gusts.

"Its impact on all of Taiwan will be quite severe," Chu Mei-lin from the Central Weather Administration said.

Work and schools across Taiwan were&nbsp;suspended on Thursday as people hunkered down for the storm.

Uprooted trees had fallen on cars and blocked roads, hampering response efforts, an employee in a township administrative office in Hualien County told AFP.

"We continuously receive reports of disasters from residents, but due to the severe wind and rain, we can't address them," said Chen, who gave only her surname.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said Friday the island will not cede an inch of its territory, as China maintains military pressure on Taipei to accept its claim of sovereignty.

Lai made the remarks during a visit to the Kinmen islands off China for the 75th anniversary of a victory over communist forces in the Battle of Guningtou.

It followed a fortnight of intense military activity in the Taiwan Strait -- the sensitive waterway that separates China and Taiwan -- with troops from both sides holding drills.

"(We) will not yield an inch of ground in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu to firmly defend our homeland," Lai said in a speech, referring to the islands controlled by Taipei.

"The Battle of Guningtou lets us understand that democracy and freedom should not be taken for granted, but require the joint efforts of generations to defend them," Lai said.

Without naming China, Lai insisted that "any external forces" would not be allowed to change the future of the islands.

China's Communist Party has never ruled democratic Taiwan, but Beijing claims the island as part of its territory and has said it will never renounce the use of force to bring it under its control.

The dispute between Beijing and Taipei dates back to a civil war between Mao Zedong's communist fighters and Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces, which fled to Taiwan in 1949 following their defeat.

The nationalists scored a key victory over the communists in the Battle of Guningtou on the Kinmen islands.

Lai, who took power in May and has been more outspoken than his predecessor in defending Taiwan's sovereignty, earlier attended a sombre ceremony for the battle and shook hands with veterans.&nbsp;

In his speech, Lai said Taiwan's "determination to defend our national sovereignty" and efforts "to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait" were unchanged.

And he repeated his hope that China and Taiwan will "conduct dialogue and exchanges with parity, dignity and in a healthy and orderly manner".

Beijing severed high-level communications with Taipei in 2016 and has since ramped up military and political pressure on the self-ruled island.

China's large-scale war games around Taiwan on October 14 were followed by live-fire drills near&nbsp;the island&nbsp;on Tuesday, and the transiting of a Chinese aircraft carrier group through the Taiwan Strait a day later.

Taiwanese troops conducted live-fire drills on Penghu island in the waterway on Thursday, days after a US and a Canadian warship sailed through the narrow passage. &nbsp;

Beijing severed high-level communications with Taipei in 2016 and has since ramped up military and political pressure on the self-ruled island. China's large-scale war games around Taiwan on October 14 were followed by live-fire drills near the island on Tuesday, and the transiting of a Chinese aircraft carrier group through the Taiwan Strait a day later. Taiwanese troops conducted live-fire drills on Penghu island in the waterway on Thursday, days after a US and a Canadian warship sailed through the narrow passage. China Calls On India To Handle Taiwan Issue Carefully Post Consulate Opening | WION Originals

A Chinese aircraft carrier group sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, Taiwan's defence minister said, a day after Beijing held a live-fire exercise near the self-ruled island.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and has ramped up military activity around the island in recent years to pressure Taipei into accepting its claims of sovereignty.&nbsp;

"The Liaoning is passing through the Taiwan Strait now, sailing north along the west of the median line (of the passage) and we are closely monitoring it," Defence Minister Wellington Koo told reporters.

The Liaoning, China's oldest aircraft carrier, took part in Beijing's large-scale military drills around Taiwan last week, which were condemned by Taipei and its key backer Washington.

A blockade was among the exercises carried out.&nbsp;

Koo warned on Wednesday that an actual blockade of Taiwan would be an "act of war" and have a "very serious impact on the global economy".

China has two aircraft carriers in active service, and a third undergoing sea trials. The Liaoning has previously passed through the strait.

China's foreign ministry said Wednesday it was "perfectly normal for Chinese aircraft carriers to sail in its own territory and territorial waters".

The Liaoning appeared to be returning to Qingdao port in eastern China via the Pratas Islands, in the northern part of the South China Sea, for "replenishing and necessary maintenance", said Jiang Hsin-biao, a military expert at Taiwan's Institute for National Defense and Security Research.

Its involvement in the recent military drills was for "the purpose of practising against foreign forces and intimidating Taiwan", Jiang told AFP.

Beijing sent a record number of military aircraft -- including fighter jets and drones -- as well as warships to encircle Taiwan on October 14 in what Beijing said was a "stern warning to the separatist acts of 'Taiwan Independence' forces".

It was in response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's National Day speech on October 10 in which he vowed to "resist annexation", and insisted that Beijing and Taipei were not subordinate to each other.

Lai, who took office in May, has used stronger language than his predecessor Tsai Ing-wen in defending Taiwan's sovereignty, angering China's leaders in Beijing, who call him a "separatist".

Taipei said Tuesday that the live-fire drill could be part of Beijing's "tactics to bolster its intimidation in conjunction with the dynamics in the Taiwan Strait".

Over the weekend, a US and a Canadian warship passed through the 180-kilometre Taiwan Strait, part of regular passages by Washington and its allies meant to reinforce its status as an international waterway.

Beijing condemned the passage as disrupting "peace and stability" in the strait.

Taiwan's defence ministry said Wednesday it had detected 15 Chinese military aircraft and six navy vessels in the skies and waters around the island in the 24 hours to 6:00 am Wednesday (2200 GMT Tuesday).

China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since 1949 after Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces fled to the island following their defeat by Mao Zedong's communist fighters.

While Taiwan has its own government, military, and currency, Beijing insists the island is part of its territory and has refused to rule out the use of force to bring it under its control.
