German luxury car maker BMW on Thursday launched the new generation X5 SUV in India at a starting price of Rs 72.9 lakh for diesel variants.

The car was launched by BMW Group India acting president Hans-Christian Bartels and legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

BMW X5 is one of the most selling models for the car makers in the domestic market, and the latest version of the SUV will compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLE, Volvo XC90, Range Rover Velar, Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7.

"BMW established the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment with the launch of BMW X5 in 1999. The BMW X5 has been the best-selling car in this segment for many years and has become one of our most successful models. The all-new BMW X5 is bound to add another chapter to this success story," said Bartels.

BMW sold 13 per cent more cars in India in the previous calendar year at 11,105 units as against 9,800 units in 2017.

The group also reported its highest-ever first quarter sales at 2,982 units in the March quarter this year.

The sales of the BMW brand cars surged 19 per cent to 2,822 units during the quarter against the same period a year ago.

The MINI brand sold 160 units during the period, an increase of 18 per cent from the year-ago period.

Besides, BMW Motorrad, the group's premium luxury motorcycle arm, also sold 597 bikes during the first quarter of 2019.

"I saw the first time (the car) when I was in Europe, and once I got out of the airport, an X5 was parked for me," Tendulkar said.&nbsp;

A photo released by safety regulators on Tuesday of the vehicle showed that the impact occurred on the right side of the vehicle.

The video also shows the driver at the wheel, who appears to be looking down. Just before the video stops, the driver looks up and suddenly looks shocked.

&ldquo;The video is disturbing and heartbreaking to watch, and our thoughts continue to be with Elaine&rsquo;s loved ones,&rdquo; Uber said in a statement. &ldquo;Our cars remain grounded, and we&rsquo;re assisting local, state and federal authorities in any way we can.&rdquo;

The video is likely to be a key part of investigations of Uber&rsquo;s self-driving car technology and whether it was ready for testing on public roads.

Although the exact specifics of Uber&rsquo;s technology are not known, self-driving cars generally use a combination of sensors, including radar and light-based Lidar, to identify objects around the vehicle, including potential obstacles coming into range.

Security agencies have flashed an alert after an SUV with a &quot;JK&quot; numberplate belonging to the CRPF was stolen from outside a camp of the force late last month, official sources said.

The alert, warning against misuse by terrorists ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26, has been issued by multiple agencies, including the Delhi Police, the CRPF and central agencies.

Official sources said a white Sumo Victa of the Central Reserve Police Force was stolen from outside a camp of the force in R K Puram area on the intervening night of December 29-30.

The official number plate of the stolen four-wheeler is &#39;JK 02A W5441&#39;, they said.

The vehicle, with a &#39;Police&#39; sticker, was stolen by at least three people that night, sources said, referring to CCTV footage of the incident.

The alert issued by security agencies, especially to agencies and forces based in Kashmir, said the vehicle could be misused for a possible sabotage attack or fidayeen raid.

Intelligence inputs have already stated that &quot;militants can use a vehicle laden with explosives to attack a camp (of security forces/agencies) in the run-up to Republic Day celebrations...&quot;, it said.

The CRPF, too, issued an alert and asked all its units in Jammu and Kashmir and north India to be on the heightened vigil and take extra precautionary measures.

&quot;No unidentified vehicle should be allowed to enter in the camp without proper identification and anti-sabotage checks,&quot; stated the alert, issued by the CRPF headquarters in Delhi and accessed by PTI.

The force has asked all its unit commanders to share the message with the &quot;last man on the ground&quot; so that the possible misuse of the stolen vehicle does not impact their security.

Strengthening its SUV portfolio, Hyundai Motor India has launched the all-new Tucson. The new SUV is priced between Rs 18.99 lakh and Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hyundai has introduced the third generation Tucson in both petrol and diesel variants. The manual petrol variant is priced at Rs 18.99 lakh, while the diesel models are priced between Rs 21.59 lakh and Rs 23.48 lakh.

The petrol automatic is priced at Rs 21.79 lakh, while the one with diesel powertrain carries a price tag of Rs 24.99 lakh.

The petrol version with manual transmission comes with 155 PS of power and is claimed to deliver a fuel efficiency of 13.03 km/ litre. The petrol automatic is touted to deliver a fuel efficiency of 12.95 km/ litre.

The diesel variant with manual transmission offers 185 PS of power and a claimed fuel efficiency of 18.42 km/litre. The diesel automatic, on the other hand, is said to offer a fuel efficiency of 16.38 km/ litre.

New features in the Tucson include a puddle lamp, downhill brake control and front and rear parking sensors.

The company also plans to launch a sub 4-metre compact SUV in order to fill the gap that lies below Creta. It had showcased concept compact SUV Carlino at the Auto Expo this year in February. The model is in the works right now.

With Tucson, the company now has three SUVs along with Creta and Santa Fe.
