Scientists in Australia have gathered evidence that our universe is constantly vibrating. They used the largest gravitational wave detector to confirm the earlier reports that there is an ongoing rumble which is likely caused by black holes at the centre of galaxies colliding with each other.

The detector looked at several rapidly spinning neutron stars across the galaxy and discovered that the gravitational wave background might be louder than previously thought, The Conversation reported.

The study carried out by Matthew Miles, Swinburne University of Technology and Rowina Nathan, Monash University, was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

"Instead of seeing just one wave, we expect to see a cosmic ocean full of waves crisscrossing in all directions: the echoing ripples of all the galactic mergers in the history of the universe."

MeerKAT helped them find a pattern associated with a gravitational wave background and led them to something never seen before.&nbsp;"The pattern representing how space and time between Earth and the pulsars changes due to gravitational waves passing between them is more powerful than we expected," they said.

This led them to conclude that there are a lot more supermassive black holes than earlier imagined. They created detailed maps of the gravitational wave background using their data. Scientists also think that these waves might be coming from other sources, such as the early universe, or other cosmic events.

The team is undertaking further studies to learn more about these waves.

The discovery was made using a sophisticated and nuanced technology. Scientists relied on the more advanced millimetre and submillimeter technology to find the huge water reservoir.&nbsp;

Experts at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in Hawaii spotted the water vapour in a quasar at redshift using the Z-Spec spectrograph.

In a new study, scientists have found that a huge black hole - with a mass of about six Suns - is feasting upon a giant star and releasing intense radiation in deep space.

The star is as big as three solar masses and the cosmic event is taking place in V4641 Sagittarii which is a system around 20,000 light-years away from Earth. The system is in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius.&nbsp;

The photons have now been detected by the astronomers from V4641 Sagittarii which have a staggering 200 teraelectronvolts (TeV) energy in it.

According to scientists, gamma rays mostly originate in&nbsp;quasars, which are galactic cores, in which a huge amount of supermassive black holes are released.

"Photons detected from microquasars have usually much lower energies than those from quasars,"&nbsp;said Sabrina Casanova, of the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN).

"Usually, we are talking about values of the order of tens of gigaelectronvolts. Meanwhile, we have observed something quite incredible in the data recorded by the detectors of the [High-Altitude Water Cherenkov]&nbsp;observatory: photons coming from a microquasar lying in our galaxy, and yet carrying energies tens of thousands of times higher than typical," he added.

<h2>How are gamma rays detected in space?</h2>

The HAWC gamma-ray observatory is situated on the side of the extinct Sierra Negra volcano in Mexico and has been designed to detect high-energy particles. For detecting the rays, it has 300 big steel tanks which are filled with purified water.

When the high-energy particles enter the tank, they begin a cascade of other particles which travel through the water faster in comparison to light.&nbsp;

Because of this, a flash of light known as Cherenkov radiation is created which is the electromagnetic version&nbsp;of a sonic boom.

In 2019, a burst of light was observed by an optical telescope in California. A black hole had shredded a star that got too close to it using its powerful tidal forces. The event was later categorised as a "tidal disruption event", or TDE. All that remains after the event is a disk that orbits the black hole.

This disk grew in size over time, expanding at a regular rate. This has brought it in the path of another star, possibly a stellar-mass black hole. This black hole is orbiting the massive black hole. While earlier it was at a safe distance, now it is repeatedly crashing into the disk left behind by the dead star.

This happens every 48 hours, with each collision resulting in a burst of X-rays that Chandra captured.

“Imagine a diver repeatedly going into a pool and creating a splash every time she enters the water,” said Matt Nicholl of Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom, the study’s lead author.

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has caught a supermassive black hole in the early universe starving its galaxy to death. Galaxies die when star formation no longer happens. Astronomers have believed for a long time that the central supermassive black holes might be to blame for this.&nbsp;

When the supermassive black hole residing at the centre of a galaxy eats up all the gas and dust, the building blocks of stars, the galaxies can be "killed" prematurely.

The "galactic death by starvation" captured by JWST happened very quickly because of the creation of two million miles per hour winds of gas.

This is the first time such an effect has been captured on camera, which proves that galaxies can be starved to death. A team of researchers led by University of Cambridge scientists presented the findings.&nbsp;

This early galaxy seen by JWST is officially named GS-10578. It has been nicknamed "Pablo’s Galaxy" after the team member who proposed to observe it in detail.&nbsp;

Pabalo's galaxy is located around 11.5 billion light-years away from Earth. What the astronomers see today transpired just 2.3 billion years or so after the Big Bang.

"Based on earlier observations, we knew this galaxy was in a quenched state: it's not forming many stars given its size, and we expect there is a link between the black hole and the end of star formation," team member Francesco D’Eugenio from Cambridge's Kavli Institute for Cosmology said in a statement.&nbsp;

The galaxy is about the size of the Milky Way and is unusually humongous for this period in the early universe. It is also strange to see a dead galaxy at this time. Researchers say that it birthed most of its stars between 12.5 billion and 11.5 billion years ago.

"In the early universe, most galaxies are forming lots of stars, so it's interesting to see such a massive dead galaxy at this period in time," team member Roberto Maiolino, also from the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, said.

Using JWST's data, researchers determined that the supermassive black hole at the heart of Pablo’s Galaxy is pushing vast amounts of gas away at speeds of 2.2 million miles per hour.&nbsp;

The scientists calculated the rotational speed of Sagittarius A*’s with the help of the outflow method which observes the radio waves and X-ray emissions which is present in the material and gases surrounding black holes, also known as the accretion disk, as per the study published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The researchers stated that the black hole is spinning which is leading to the Lense-Thirring effect, also known as frame dragging. The effect takes place when space-time is dragged by a black hole along with its spin, explained lead study author Ruth Daly, who is also a physics professor at Penn State University and designed the outflow method nearly a decade ago.

After the outflow method's invention, Daly has been working to understand the spin of various black holes and wrote a study which explored nearly 750 supermassive black holes in 2019.&nbsp;

“With this spin, Sagittarius A* will be dramatically altering the shape of space-time in its vicinity. We’re used to thinking and living in a world where all the spatial dimensions are equivalent — the distance to the ceiling and the distance to the wall and the distance to the floor … they all sort of are linear, it’s not like one is totally squished up compared to the others," Daly said, as reported by CNN.

Astronomers have observed that a distant supermassive black hole has been releasing a jet of plasma in the shape of twisted rope and blasting it out like a monstrous cosmic spider at near-light speed. 
 
The spectacular sight was witnessed by the astronomers using a network of radio telescopes, which included the RadioAstron space telescope which are combined to create an Earth-sized antenna. 
 
The network was specifically trained by the astronomers to observe the heart of a distant blazar named 3C 279. 
 
"Thanks to RadioAstron and a network of twenty-three radio telescopes distributed across the Earth, we have obtained the highest-resolution image of the interior of a blazar to date, allowing us to observe the internal structure of the jet in such detail for the first time," stated Antonio Fuentes, team leader and a researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), in a statement. 
 
Blazars, like the 3C 279, are the bright hearts of galaxies which emit powerful light after they host a feeding supermassive black hole. The black holes, which are present in the centres of galaxies and are actively feeding, continuously churn the matter on which they feast and this material is situated in the form of flattened plates of dust and gas around the voids. These plates are known as "accretion disks." 
 
The 3C 279's new observations reveal unprecedented details of the supermassive black hole and plasma jet at the heart of this blazar.

<h2>Plasma jets are not uniform, appear with&nbsp;twists and turns</h2>

"This is the first time we have seen such filaments so close to the jet’s origin, and they tell us more about how the black hole shapes the plasma," said Eduardo Ros, another member of the team and European scheduler of the Global mm-VLBI Array, in the statement. "This shows how different telescopes can reveal different features of the same object,” he added. 
 
The team further found that the jet was composed of at least two twisted filaments of plasma which stretch nearly 570 light-years from their source. The observations further showed that the plasma jets are not uniform and straight and they show the twists and turns which arise because of the influence of the central black hole. 
 
The helical filaments or twists are because of the instabilities in the plasma jet which is part of the prior theories which imply how these jets evolve may need to be revised. 
 
"One particularly intriguing aspect arising from our results is that they suggest the presence of a helical magnetic field that confines the jet," said Guang-Yao Zhao, one of the members of the team and a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, in the statement. 
 
"Therefore, it could be the magnetic field, which rotates clockwise around the jet in 3C 279, that directs and guides the jet’s plasma moving at a speed of 0.997 times the speed of light,” he added. 
 
"We are entering an entirely novel terrain in which these filaments can be actually connected to the most intricate processes in the immediate vicinity of the black hole producing the jet," said Andrei Lobanov, one of the members of the team and scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, in the statement.

Meanwhile, 11 galaxies which existed when the universe had lived for only 470 to 675 million years have also been identified by the James Webb telescope, stated NASA. 
 
The black hole found inside CEERS 1019 shares similarities with the one present at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, which is 4.6 million times greater than the mass of the sun, NASA added. The newly-discovered black hole is also not as bright as the massive behemoths which have been detected previously.

The James Webb telescope helps scientists find and verify theories using more precise information, in comparison to other telescopes. According to NASA, researchers can see how much gas is being ingested by the black hole and determine the star-formation rate of its galaxy. 
 
Astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin Steven Finkelstein said, "Until now, research about objects in the early universe was largely theoretical. With Webb, not only can we see black holes and galaxies at extreme distances, we can now start to accurately measure them. That's the tremendous power of this telescope."

Visually, the CEERS 1019 appears as three bright clumps and not as a single circular disk. "We're not used to seeing so much structure in images at these distances," stated CEERS team member Jeyhan Kartaltepe of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. 
 
"A galaxy merger could be partly responsible for fueling the activity in this galaxy's black hole, and that could also lead to increased star formation,” he added.

The immense black hole was spotted by researchers in a galaxy called GS-9209, which lies 25 billion light-years away from Earth, making it one of the farthest to have been discovered and recorded. 
 
The team of astronomers at Edinburgh University, with the use of the James Webb space telescope (JWST), observed the galaxy and revealed fresh information about its history and composition. 
 
Dr Adam Carnall, who headed the team, said that the telescope, which is the most powerful ever built, helped them see how galaxies were growing more “larger and earlier” than what astronomers expected in the universe's first billion years.

Carnall added the “very massive black hole” spotted at the centre of GS-9209 was a “big surprise” that appeared to be supporting the theory that such enormous black holes stopped the formation of stars in early galaxies. 
 
“The evidence we see for the supermassive black hole was really unexpected,” Carnall said. “This is the kind of detail we’d never have been able to see without JWST,” he added.

Edinburgh's former PhD student and now a professor of observational cosmology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, Karina Caputi, had discovered the GS-9209 galaxy in 2004. 
 
While GS-9209 contains around as many stars as are present in our home galaxy along with a combined mass which is equivalent to 40 billion suns, the galaxy's size is only one-tenth of the Milky Way.

The galaxy is one of the earliest known examples of the ones that have stopped forming stars, stated the researchers. 
 
“The fact (that the black hole) is so massive, means it must have been very active in the past, with lots of gas falling in, which would have shone extremely brightly as a quasar,” said Carnall said. “All that energy spewing out from the black hole in the centre of the galaxy would have seriously disrupted the whole galaxy, stopping gas from collapsing to form new stars,” he added.

Supermassive black holes have mass millions or even billions of times of that of the Sun. Supermassive black holes are found at the centre of spiral galaxies. Their unimaginably strong gravitational force holds the entire galaxy together.

To find out what slows down star formation in a galaxy, researchers from the University of Cambridge used three state-of-the-art cosmological simulations -- EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG.&nbsp;

There are two bubbles of very hot gas emanating form the centre of our galaxy. Black holes gobble up material to the extent that even light cannot escape from it. At the same time, black holes spew out powerful jets of material nearly at the speed of light.

The study about the bubbles says that jets that caused them to formed started spewing out material 2.6 million years ago.

The bubbles are really huge in size. They are 36,000 light-years tall. Study about these bubbles has been carried out by scientists including those from University of Michigan.

Astronomer Mateusz Ruszkowski, a co-author of the study, said, “There are two competing models that explain these bubbles, called Fermi and eRosita bubbles after the telescopes that named them. The first suggests that the outflow is driven by a nuclear starburst, in which a star explodes in a supernova and expels material. The second model, which the team’s findings support, suggests that these outflows are driven by energy thrown out from a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy.”

According to the study's author Peter Hinz, ''People had been complacent for some 20 years, since the mid-'90s, that strong cosmological censorship is always verified. We challenge that point of view.''

In conversation with Motherboard, the doctor claimed that he was sceptical about seeing anything at the centre of the far-off galaxy, but found nothing.
