UK: Labour targets Rishi Sunak over 'non-dom tax loophole' used by wife

<p>Just hours after it emerged that Humza Yousaf would be the new leader of Scottish National Party, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak rejected Yousaf's call&nbsp;for another referendum for Scottish independence. However, Sunak said that he "looks forward to working" with Yousaf.</p>

<p>The people of Scotland and the whole of the UK want politicians "to focus on the issues that matter most to them: reducing inflation, dealing with the cost of living, tackling (hospital) backlogs", he told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Humza Yousaf, a politician of South Asian-origin, was chosen on Monday (March 27) to replace Nicola Sturgeon as head of the Scottish National Party (SNP). Yousaf (32) got 52 per cent of votes of SNP members.</p>

<p>Yousaf, though poised to become new Scottish first minister, will not take the post officially until voting by Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) due to take place on Tuesday (March 28).</p>

<p>After he was elected leader of Scottish National Party, Yousaf said that he would make a new push for Scottish independence.</p>

<p>"The people of Scotland need independence now more than ever before, and we will be the generation that delivers it," he said in Edinburgh after the result.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I was determined then, as I am now, as the 14th leader of this great party, that we will deliver independence for Scotland – together as a team," he said, adding Scotland is a European nation.&nbsp;</p>

He said he was convinced that as a former finance minister, he was the right person to lead the country through cost-of-living crisis.</p>

<p>Sunak won the race to replace Liz Truss as premier and leader of the Conservative Party on October 24, the same day Hindus marked Diwali, the festival of lights.</p>

<p>The new premier's first formal event in Downing Street was a Diwali reception.</p>

<p>"It was obviously marvellous. It meant a lot of things to a lot of people," said Sunak, who as Johnson's finance minister would lay out traditional Diwali decorations on the doorstep of his official residence at 11 Downing Street.</p>

<p>Sunak is of Indian heritage. His grandparents hailed from pre-independence India. They emigrated to Britain from eastern Africa in the 1960s.</p>

<p>"As chancellor I was able to light my Diwali Diyas (lamps) on the steps of Downing Street. It said something wonderful about our country that that was possible, but also that it wasn't a big deal."</p>

<p>"It was in a sense gosh, this is great, but also that's just Britain," he told The Times newspaper in his first major interview since taking office.</p>

UK PM Rishi Sunak defends his decision to skip COP27 climate summit

<p>Global stocks and the pound climbed Monday as markets reacted to the news that former finance minister Rishi Sunak would become Britain's new prime minister.</p>

<p>European and American equities climbed despite data showing Britain and Germany headed for recession and a plunging Hong Kong stock market as Chinese President Xi Jinping handed key economic posts to loyalists behind his zero-Covid strategy.</p>

<p>Wall Street also opened in the green on Monday, with sentiment boosted by hopes the Federal Reserve would soon slow its pace of interest rate hikes.</p>

<p>News that European gas prices were at a four-month low also spurred traders, as the reference Dutch TTF dipped below 100 euros for the first time since June, reaching 98.60 euros per megawatt hour at around 1030 GMT on Monday.</p>

<p>All eyes were on Britain as Sunak was poised to become the country's third prime minister in less than two months following the resignations of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.</p>

<p>"The pound started the week trading higher as many see the new potential PM as a source of some stability, particularly when compared to the chaotic term served by the Truss government which saw massive volatility across markets," noted XTB chief market analyst Walid Koudmani.</p>

<p>"Many see Sunak as the final chance for the Conservative Party as he has managed to maintain some credibility" compared with the uncertainty of the Truss and Johnson premierships, he added.</p>

<p>"Investors clearly hope Sunak will stabilise the economy and the political situation -- though it's hard to work out at this point which is the harder task," commented AJ Bell financial analyst Danni Hewson.</p>

<p>Yields on UK government bonds also dropped following recent surges in the wake of Truss's disastrous budget that led to her downfall.</p>

<p>Focus was also on the euro after new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took office.</p>

<p>Meloni's post-fascist Brothers of Italy scored a historic victory in general elections on September 25.</p>

<p>Her new government is the most far-right in Italy since World War II, and takes power at a time of decades-high inflation and an energy crisis linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.</p>

<p>"We now need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together, because that is the only way we will overcome the challenges we face and build a better more prosperous future for our children, and our grandchildren," said Sunak towards the end.</p>

<p>How and why Rishi Sunak lost to Liz Truss in the race to become UK’s Prime Minister is no big mystery. It is because the cow could not help Sunak. Had he set about winning over a majority of the 160,000 Conservative Party voters the way he had rallied the Tory Members of Parliament, he might well have succeeded in getting to No. 10 Downing Street.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead, Sunak, along with his wife Akshata Murthy, chose to do a Gau Puja (cow worship) in London on August 23. Hindu priests guided Sunak and Murthy in the puja rituals such as performing aarti to a cow decorated with colours and handprints for the ceremony.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like BJP’s first Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Sunak should have known that only a cow born and living in India can be Gau Mata and deserving of such rituals. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Vajpayee’s private secretary and later Officer on Special Duty, Shakti Sinha, never tired of telling the story of Vajpayee’s wisecrack while on a tour of Australia when beef was served at a banquet. On seeing the dish placed close to the Vajpayee’s plate, Sinha alerted him to the beef dish on the table.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An unfazed Vajpayee, carried on eating whatever he was tucking away and, between mouthfuls, told Sinha: It is Australian cow, not Indian. Only cow born in India is Gau Mata. Other cows do not deserve to be treated as Gau Mata. Sunak ought to have known this.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming to the winner, Liz Truss, she had described her parents as being “to the Left of Labour”. When Truss later stood for election to parliament as the Conservative party’s candidate, her mother agreed to campaign for her, but her father declined to do so. Closer to the election, earlier this year, Truss had said: "I share the values of the Christian faith and the Church of England, but I'm not a regular practising religious person".&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2000, Truss married Hugh O'Leary, a fellow accountant, and the couple has two daughters. Some years into the marriage, from 2004 until mid-2005, Truss had an affair with the married MP Mark Field, whom the Conservative Party, at that time, had appointed as her political mentor. However, her marriage with O'Leary survived the affair.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Field's first wife was a former investment banker Michele Acton. Married in 1994, they divorced in 2006, a year after ending his affair with Truss. Acton became Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Medicine in 2019. Field later married celebrity agent Victoria Elphicke in 2007. &nbsp;</p>
