Sugar and cans previously were transported to West Bank bottlers from Jordan via the bridge, according to Hatim Omari, manager of a plant that bottles Pepsi, 7UP and Mirinda for sale in the Palestinian territories and neighboring countries.

The Pepsi facility, located in Jericho, ran out of materials for its canned soft drinks about 15 days ago, Omari said, and has not been able to get new shipments of cans or sugar for more than one month. Its sugar came from Saudi Arabia, he said.

"If the situation continues this way, most of the private sector players including us will reach a dead end," Hindi said in a WhatsApp message.

Pepsi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Coca-Cola declined to comment. The bottlers are separate businesses, but sometimes the U.S.-based companies hold stakes in them.

High unemployment in the densely populated West Bank, where he said Pepsi is a dominant cola, hurts local families' ability to buy Pepsi drinks, he said.

"Our supply is weak now, and our sales are weaker."

The plant now runs one shift per day for its 200 total workers, down from three previously, Omari added.

Beyond supply shortages, consumer-led boycotts of U.S.-based brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi have hurt companies' sales in Muslim-majority countries, where some consumers shun the soft drinks.

Unprocessed fresh fruits and vegetables, individual servings of condiments and sugar, as well as miniature toiletries and shrink-wrap used for suitcases in airports will also fall under the ban on single-use plastic packaging. Additionally, ultra-lightweight plastic bags will also be banned, with some exceptions.

Additionally, lawmakers included a provision to ban "forever chemicals" in food packaging that come into contact with food to prevent adverse health effects, including various types of cancer.

Cocoa prices skyrocket to unprecedented highs amid global supply concerns

Global sugar prices soared to their highest level in almost 13 years in September due to the El Nino weather phenomenon in India and Thailand, the UN food agency said on Friday (Oct 6), while noting that the overall food index was mostly stable nevertheless.

Declines in indices for vegetable oils, dairy and meat offset the surge in sugar and maize prices, said Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

According to the UN food agency, the price index which tracks the most globally traded food commodities averaged an estimated 121.5 points in September against the revised 121.6 for August, which previously stood at 121.4 points.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, last month’s figure was 10.7 per cent down year-on-year and 24 per cent below the all-time high reached in March 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

The UN food agency’s cereal index rose 1.0 per cent from the previous month with prices in maize rising as much as seven per cent which has been attributed to a strong demand for Brazilian supplies and slower selling in Argentina as well as an increased barge freight rates in the United States.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, international wheat prices dropped by 1.6 per cent after Russia showed strong supplies and good production prospects, according to the FAO. The price for rice had skyrocketed nearly 10 per cent in August only dipping 0.5 per cent last month amid low import demand.&nbsp;

The UN food agency also noted a drop in the prices of dairy products by 2.3 per cent marking a ninth successive monthly fall which has been attributed to low global import demand and ample stocks.&nbsp;

The FAO has also forecasted the world cereal production this year at 2.819 billion tonnes slightly over the previous estimate of 2.815 billion. This is almost entirely driven by more positive yield estimates for Russia and Ukraine due to continued favourable weather conditions, said the UN food agency.

While the food prices across the world steadied, the FAO noted that their Sugar Price Index jumped by 9.8 per cent in September when compared to the month before that, reaching the highest point since November 2010.&nbsp;

This surge has been attributed to the El Nino weather phenomenon which has affected the production in India and Thailand. The climate pattern is often marked by warming ocean surface temperatures and extreme weather events.&nbsp;

The rise in FAO’s Sugar Price Index for a second consecutive month has also raised concerns over a tighter global supply outlook in the upcoming season.&nbsp;

Brazil has offered to share its ethanol manufacturing technology with India, in an attempt to put an end to their long-running disagreements over the sugar industry, the Financial Express reported on Monday.

A ministerial conference and several rounds of formal negotiations between the two parties led to the development.

The offer on ethanol technology might be the deciding factor because India wants to proceed quickly with the use of biofuels for stand-alone usage in transportation as well as for blending with petroleum fuels.

“Brazil is saying they will share with us technology for ethanol production. It is a positive thing. We should be able to get a good outcome (in talks),” the Financial Express quoted an anonymous official as saying. But the representative withheld information on the Indian proposal during the negotiations.

Brazil is a major manufacturer of ethanol and sugarcane. It has attained a 25 per cent level and is a leader in gasoline with ethanol added. In Brazil, a sizable market for flex-fuel vehicles that can run on either gasoline or ethanol has now been cornered, making up 83 per cent of sales of new light vehicles in 2022.

By FY 26, India wants to increase the current 10 per cent ethanol blend to 20 per cent. Diesel and ethanol blends are also being tested. Additionally, it is the Global Alliance's proposer and coordinator, which was established on its idea during the G-20 Summit on September 9. &nbsp;Along with the presidents of the US, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, and Bangladesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched it.

All major manufacturers currently provide vehicles with flex fuel engines, and late last month Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled the first electric flex-fuel vehicle produced in India by Toyota.

The Indian government is pushing ethanol in order to increase farm revenue in addition to lowering the cost of importing crude oil for transportation and aiding in the decarbonisation of transportation. Some sources claim that sugarcane farmers' incomes could increase by 15 per cent as a result of ethanol. Sugar price increases are not under much pressure since farmers are earning more money from ethanol. Additionally, it increases the cash flow and profitability of sugarcane processors.

Given that it involves two of the biggest sugar producers in the world, the India-Brazil sugar dispute is critical. The resolution of the conflict could have a significant effect on the world sugar market.

The India-Brazil sugar dispute began in 2005 when India complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about Brazil's sugar subsidies, claiming that they were affecting Indian sugar farmers and causing the global sugar market to become distorted. Brazil had to cut back on its sugar subsidies after the WTO decided in favour of India.

Despite this, the conflict has persisted, with India and Brazil trading charges of breaking WTO regulations. Brazil contested India's support programmes for sugarcane farmers and sugar export subsidies in 2019. Brazil said that these actions were against the WTO's Agriculture Agreement (AoA).

In response to a complaint from Brazil, the WTO's Dispute Settlement Panel stated in a report distributed to members in December 2021 that India's support for sugarcane producers between 2014–15 and 2018–19 exceeded the permissible amount of 10 per cent of the total value of production, in violation of AoA provisions. Costa Rica and Guatemala later asked to join the dispute. Other nations participated in the dispute as third parties.

The panel's decision has been contested by India, but as the WTO's Appellate Body is now inactive, efforts have been made to resolve the dispute bilaterally.

Regardless, doing so will ultimately result in imported sugar being sold on the market, leading the consumers to pay PKR 220 per kg for sugar rather than the set amount of PKR 100 per kg.

As per sources cited by Geo News, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP)&nbsp;has already written to Pakistan's commercial attaché in Brazil to establish arrangements for the import of 100,000 metric tonnes of sugar from the South American country.

“There was no sign of reversibility — the brains of people with obesity continued to lack the chemical responses that tell the body, ‘OK, you ate enough,’” stated Dr Caroline Apovian, who works as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also the co-director of the Centre for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“This study captures why obesity is a disease — there are actual changes to the brain,” stated Apovian, who was not part of the group that carried out the study.

“The study is very rigorous and quite comprehensive,” stated Dr I Sadaf Farooqi, who is a professor of metabolism and medicine at the University of Cambridge in the UK and was not involved in the new research.

“The way they’ve designed their study gives more confidence in the findings, adding to prior research that also found obesity causes some changes in the brain,” she added.&nbsp;

On Monday, Nature Metabolism published the study which was done based on a controlled clinical trial involving 30 people who are considered medically obese and 30 people who have normal weight. The group of people were fed sugar carbohydrates (glucose), fats (lipids) or water (as a control). On separate days, each group of nutrients were fed to people directly into the stomach through a feeding tube.

“We wanted to bypass the mouth and focus on the gut-brain connection, to see how nutrients affect the brain independently from seeing, smelling or tasting food,” stated lead study author Dr &nbsp;Mireille Serlie, professor of endocrinology at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

One night before the testing, the participants were given the same meal for dinner at home and they did not consume anything till the feeding tube was in place the next morning. &nbsp;When either fats or sugars entered the stomach through the tube, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were used by researchers to capture the response of the brains for over 30 minutes.

In people who had normal weight, the study found evidence of brain understanding that the body had been fed when either sugars or fats were put into the stomach. Also, the levels of dopamine rose in people with normal weight which signalled that the brain's reward centres were activated. However, in medically obese people, no evidence was found of brain understanding that food has been given to the body and there was no rise in dopamine levels.

"In any sugar season, it takes at least a few months to get a clear idea about production, and that's why we will wait until there's an absolutely clear picture about production," said another government official, who also declined to be identified.

"As far as exports are concerned, we will not be in any hurry at all."

A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At the start of the current sugar season to September&nbsp;30, 2023, the industry pegged this year's output at 36 million tonnes, which has been scaled down to 32.8 million tonnes.

Due to the lower output, India allowed exports of 6.1 million tonnes for this season. As the quota is exhausted, India is currently not exporting sugar.

Even if India agrees to allow exports later during the 2023-2024 season, New Delhi may not allow more than 4 million tonnes, the officials said. The government is keen to control food prices ahead of some state elections in 2023 and a general election in mid-2024.

The world needs more Indian sugar and as early as possible since global prices are trading near 11-years high, said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house.

India to cap sugar exports until H1 2024 as El Nino looms: Report

Cutting on sugar can be a great challenge for someone trying to lose weight. The change in taste in our usual comfort foods can be tough to handle. Many people opt for artificial sweeteners to try to calm down the taste buds. But now World Health Organisation has clearly said that artificial sweeteners do not provide long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children.

The WHO has released a new guideline in accordance to which artificial sweeteners are not just without benefits but they also increase the risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even death.

Francesco Branca, Director for Nutrition and Food Safety at WHO said that people need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake.

"Replacing free sugars with non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) does not help with weight control in the long term. People need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake, such as consuming food with naturally occurring sugars, like fruit, or unsweetened food and beverages,” said Branca.

"NSS are not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value. People should reduce the sweetness of the diet altogether, starting early in life, to improve their health."

Branca was quoted on the official website of WHO.

Common NSS include aspartame, advantame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, acesulfame K, cyclamates, stevia and stevia derivatives.

However, WHO noted that its recommendation does not apply to personal care and hygiene product that contain non-sugar sweeteners (NSS). This means that NSS in products like skin cream, toothpaste, medications or low-calorie sugars and sugar alcohols (polyols) do not pose the threat WHO has warned about.

"Because the link observed in the evidence between NSS and disease outcomes might be confounded by baseline characteristics of study participants and complicated patterns of NSS use, the recommendation has been assessed as conditional, following WHO processes for developing guidelines. This signals that policy decisions based on this recommendation may require substantive discussion in specific country contexts, linked for example to the extent of consumption in different age groups," says WHO on its website.

But now World Health Organisation has clearly said that artificial sweeteners do not provide long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children. The WHO has released a new guideline in accordance to which artificial sweeteners are not just without benefits but they also increase the risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even death. Francesco Branca, Director for Nutrition and Food Safety at WHO said that people need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake. "Replacing free sugars with non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) does not help with weight control in the long term. People need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake, such as consuming food with naturally occurring sugars, like fruit, or unsweetened food and beverages,” said Branca. "NSS are not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value. People should reduce the sweetness of the diet altogether, starting early in life, to improve their health." Branca was quoted on the official website of WHO. Common NSS include aspartame, advantame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, acesulfame K, cyclamates, stevia and stevia derivatives. However, WHO noted that its recommendation does not apply to personal care and hygiene product that contain non-sugar sweeteners (NSS). This means that NSS in products like skin cream, toothpaste, medications or low-calorie sugars and sugar alcohols (polyols) do not pose the threat WHO has warned about. This signals that policy decisions based on this recommendation may require substantive discussion in specific country contexts, linked for example to the extent of consumption in different age groups," says WHO on its website. Using sugar substitutes for weight loss? WHO has a warning for you

The Indian government is planning to ban sugar exports due to a decline in output and to prevent inflationary pressures before the Lok Sabha elections next year, as per reports.

According to reports, a group of ministers has advised that mills cease sending sugar overseas with "immediate effect".

The committee, including the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and the Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, is believed to have discussed the issue in a meeting on April 27. According to the source, the government will shortly announce a restriction on shipments.

According to statistics from the Department of Consumer Affairs, sugar's average retail price throughout all of India on Friday was Rs 42.24 per kg, which was somewhat higher than the level from a year earlier when it was Rs 41.31. The country is expected to produce 327 lakh tonnes (LT) of sugar during the 2022–23 crop year (October–September), down from the 359 lakh tonnes produced during the previous crop year.

Maximum 6.31 lakh tonnes of sugar have been sold from India to Bangladesh in the current year, according to statistics on sugar exports up till April 8, 2023. Djibouti, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, China, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Afghanistan, Cameroon, and Jordan are a few more important importers.

New standards for tackling obesity and providing nutritious school meals to millions of American children were proposed by the United States Agriculture Department on Friday.&nbsp;"Many children aren't getting the nutrition they need, and diet-related diseases are on the rise," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in a statement.

"Research shows school meals are the healthiest meals in a day for most kids, proving that they are an important tool for giving kids access to the nutrition they need for a bright future," he added.

The changes proposed, if incorporated, in the federally funded school meals would slowly reduce the children's intake of sodium in a week, which increases the risk of heart disease or high blood pressure.

This would also limit the sugar intake, which can lead to Type 2 diabetes or obesity, by targeting products which are high in sugar like breakfast cereals and yoghurts.

As per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 20 per cent or 14.7 million children and adolescents between the age of 2-19 in the United States are obese.

Meanwhile, as per the proposed standard, low-fat and non-fat milk will be more accessible to younger children while older children will be allowed to consume flavoured milk "with reasonable limits on added sugars".

The proposal has emphasised whole grains which are said to decrease the risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
