The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is the 50th launch of ISRO from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

The PSLV is a four-stage rocket with the first stage and third stage using solid-propellant rocket motors, whereas the second a fourth stage use liquid-propellant rocket motors.

It is considered the most reliable launch vehicle of ISRO as it has flown 47 of its 49 missions successfully.

The only failures of missions involving the PSLV rocket occurred in 1993 (first launch) and 2017 (41st launch).&nbsp;

India's space agency called off the launch of its second lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, less than an hour before the scheduled take off on Monday (July 15) due to a "technical snag." Earlier in the wee hours of Monday, in a last-minute revision of schedule, the ISRO announced that the launch of India's second lunar mission 'Chandrayaan-2' has been called off due to a technical snag.

ISRO's public relations officer (PRO) Guruprasad said that the revised launch date will be announced later.

"A technical snag was observed in launch vehicle system at 1 hour before the launch. As a measure of abundant precaution, Chandrayaan2 launch has been called off for today. The revised launch date will be announced later" the ISRO tweeted minutes ahead of the scheduled launch on Monday.

Balachandran said such revisions due to technical snags have happened in the past too.

"This happens many a time, this is not unusual. In the manned missions they have asked the astronauts sitting in the capsule to get down and abort the mission," he said.

Expressing faith in the decision taken by ISRO, he said, "They monitor everything till they launch. This is a complex mission so many things needed to be managed. Everything requires analyses nothing can be left to chance."

The country's second lunar spacecraft was to be launched onboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk-III from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh at 2:51 am.

Chandrayaan-2, which has home-grown technology, will explore a region of Moon where no mission has ever set foot. According to ISRO Chairman Kailasavadivoo Sivan, the landing site, at a latitude of about 70 degrees south, is the southernmost for any mission till date.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Sivan said Vikram's 15-minute final descent "will be the most terrifying moments as we have never undertaken such a complex mission".

The solar-powered rover can travel up to 500 metres (yards) and is expected to work for one lunar day, the equivalent of 14 Earth days.

Sivan said the probe will be looking for signs of water and "a fossil record of the early solar system".

Despite the relatively small budget, the mission does raise questions about how funds are allocated when the country is still battling hunger and poverty.

But national pride is at stake: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to send a manned mission into orbit by 2022.

Most experts say the geo-strategic stakes are small - but that India's low-cost model could win commercial satellite and orbiting deals.

"The fundamental question that we should ask ourselves in this context is not whether India should undertake such ambitious space ventures, but whether India can afford to ignore it," said K Kasturirangan, a former ISRO chief.

India has to aim to be a leader in space, he added.

Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan, head of space policy at the Observer Research Foundation, a New Delhi think tank, said Chandrayaan-2 will enhance the nation's reputation "at a time when the global and particularly, the Asian space programmes are becoming increasingly competitive".

Amitabha Ghosh, a scientist for NASA's Rover mission to Mars, said the benefits of Chandrayaan-2 are huge, compared to its cost.

"A spacecraft mission of the complexity of Chandrayaan-2 conveys a message that India is capable of delivering on difficult technology development endeavours," said Ghosh.

However, some experts say anyone looking for a cheap ticket to space should think of the comfort on low-cost plane rides closer to Earth.

Scott Hubbard, a former top NASA researcher now with Stanford University, examined the cost-effectiveness of the Indian Mars orbiter against the American Maven mission.

Although both launched in 2013, Maven is estimated to have cost 10 times more, but India's Mangalyaan was only designed to last about a year.

"The US mission was required to last two years. That's a big difference in cost," said Hubbard. And Mangalyaan's payload was 15 kg, while Maven could carry 65 kg with more sophisticated instruments.

"So you get what you pay for," concluded Hubbard.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday said the PSLV-C46, on its 48th mission, would launch RISAT, a radar imaging earth observation satellite, on May 22.

Chandrayaan 2, India’s Lunar Mission which will feature India’s most powerful rocket the GSLV Mk 3 to carry the orbiter, lander and rover, is the much-anticipated project of this year. But India's space agency ISRO has much more in store than the widely known Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan manned missions.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Yuvika - Young Scientist Programme for school students at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Dr KD Sivan, chairman of ISRO said, the agency is in the final stage of testing for the orbiter, lander, rover and that they would be ready for launch by the end of May.&nbsp;

However, the launch will likely be in the first or the second week of July due to an impending eclipse and other conditions, said the Dr Sivan.&nbsp;

"This is a very important mission because we are landing at a place where nobody else has gone, near the South Pole of the moon, and new sciences could emerge from this mission,"&nbsp;Dr Sivan added.

Elaborating on the 13 payloads that the Chandrayaan-2 Mission would be carrying, he said, "basically these payloads are looking at the composition of the atmosphere, the surface, mapping, sub-surface structure, lunar surface composition et cetera.”

Responding to queries regarding some of the major missions that the agency is working on, he said, they are working on seven interplanetary missions in a decade. The missions would include Mars Orbiter Mission 2, Chandrayaan 3, a mission to Venus, exposat planetary exploration and Aditya L1 among others.&nbsp;

"There is a lot of interest in planet Venus and we have announced a lot of opportunities for the scientific community in India and abroad. Around 20 payloads are coming", Dr Sivan said.&nbsp;

He also made a mention of Mission Aditya L1 that could be launched in mid-2020 to study the Corona of the Sun, adding that it would help in understanding climate change.&nbsp;

While Aditya L1 and exposat mission are defined and cleared, the Mars Orbiter 2 and Chandrayaan 3 are in their planning stages. "After planning, it will be formed as a project and we will lead it,"&nbsp;he said.

ISRO to launch PSLV-C45 on April 1 from Sriharikota

Just before midnight on Thursday, the Indian Space Research Organisation will launch its 46th flight of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, to put into space Microsat-R, an imaging satellite and Kalamsat, a communication satellite developed by students, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

The launch at 11:37 pm is said to be unique as PSLV-C44 fourth stage will be re-used automatically to launch Kalamsat payload and Microsat-R satellite into space from the First Launch Pad (FLP).&nbsp;PSLV is a four-stage launch vehicle with alternating solid and liquid stages.

The PSLV with two strap-on configuration has been identified for this mission and the configuration is designated as PSLV-DL.

PSLV-C44 is the first mission of PSLV-DL and is a new variant of PSLV.

PSLV-C44, the fourth stage (PS4) of the vehicle will be moved to a higher circular orbit so as to establish an orbital platform for carrying out experiments.

Kalamsat, a student payload, will be the first to use PS4 as orbital platform.&nbsp;

PSLV-C44 will also carry Microsat-R, an imaging satellite.

Earlier, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan said India's second lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, which was scheduled to be launched in late 2018,&nbsp;is now expected to be launched between March 25 and end of April this year.

This satellite will give a boost to the Indian Air Force and other armed forces.

GSLV-F11 carrying 2,250kg GSAT-7A is scheduled to lift-off at 4.10pm from the second launch pad at the spaceport of Sriharikota, situated about 110 km from Chennai.

The mission life of the GSAT-7A, built by the Indian Space Research Organisation, is eight years.

GSLV-F08, weighing 415.6 tonnes with a height of 49.1 metre comes with notable improvements like induction of High Thrust Vikas Engine, electromechanical actuation system in place of the electro-hydraulic actuation system.

At the end of the 27-hour countdown, the 49.1-metre Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F08), fitted with indigenously developed cryogenic third stage, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here at 4.56 pm and soared majestically into the clear sky.

The 2140-kg GSAT-6A is a high power S-band communication satellite and would complement the services provided by GSAT 6 since its launch in 2015. It will be a technology demonstrator for high power S-band transmission from the satellite for supporting two-way communication, according to ISRO.

The satellite will also provide a platform for developing technologies such as demonstration of 6m S-Band Unfurlable Antenna, handheld ground terminals and network management techniques that could be useful in satellite-based mobile communication applications.

ISRO had made significant improvements in the GSLV Mk-II rocket including induction of high thrust Vikas engine in the second stage. The three-stage launch vehicle weighing 415.6 tonnes also was deployed with electromechanical actuation system in place of electro-hydraulic actuation system for much better reliability.

This was PSLV&#39;s longest-ever mission.

With the successful launch, including 28 satellites from foreign countries, by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), ISRO put behind a rare failure it encountered four months ago.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had suffered a setback after the failure of the earlier PSLV-C39 mission in August last year.

The previous mission to launch backup navigation satellite IRNSS-1H on board PSLV-C39 had failed after the heat shield did not separate in the final leg of the launch sequence, with the satellite getting stuck in the fourth stage of the rocket.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed ISRO scientists for the successful PSLV C-40 mission.

A visibly relieved ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar, on his final mission as the chief of the space agency, said he was happy to provide Cartosat 2 Series as a New Year gift for the country.

&quot;ISRO is starting 2018 with the successful launch... All satellites have been released. So far Cartosat performance is satisfactory,&quot; he said at the mission control room.

He said the previous launch faced a heat shield problem and an ISRO committee has addressed it and taken steps to ensure the vehicle was &#39;robust&#39;.

Today&#39;s mission marked a milestone in ISRO&#39;s annals with a microsatellite, among the three Indian spacecraft launched, becoming the 100th to roll out through ISRO Satellite Centre Complex (ISAC).

Besides ISRO&#39;s communication, weather observation, navigation and experimental spacecraft, the 100 satellites included nano and micro spacecraft made by educational institutions in the country, Kumar, who is retiring later this month, said.

&quot;Basically...The 100 satellites covers all student satellites also that have been put (by ISRO),&quot; he told reporters at the post-launch briefing.

Earlier, in a precise launch, PSLV-C40 lifted off at 9.28 am at the end of the 28-hour countdown from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, about 110 km from Chennai, and soared into a cloudy sky.

After a perfect flight sequence, each of which was applauded by ISRO scientists, the four-stage rocket first injected the 710-kg Cartosat-2 Series Satellite for earth observation into 505-km polar sun-synchronous orbit about 17 minutes after liftoff.

India&#39;s nanosatellite and 28 payloads from six countries, including the US and the UK, totally weighing 613 kg were then released into orbit one by one in a space of about seven minutes.

In a multi-orbit manoeuvre, microsatellite built by ISRO was placed in the orbit finally after the PSLV-C40 was brought down to 359.584 km in polar Sun-synchronous orbit by twice re-starting the fourth stage of the rocket, about 105 minutes after lift-off.

The fourth stage was finally shut off at about 2 hours 21 minutes, thus making the mission the longest ever by ISRO.

A similar kind of process was taken up during the launch of SCATSAT-1 onboard PSLV-C35 in September 2016 in which the fourth stage engine was restarted and later cut off for launching the satellite.

This mission had lasted two hours and 15 minutes, ISRO scientists said.

Cartosat-2 Series is an advanced remote sensing satellite similar in configuration to earlier six spacecraft in the series and intended to augment data services to the users.

Its primary objective is to provide high-resolution scene-specific spot imageries that would help in urban and rural applications, coastal land use and regulation, road network monitoring, water distribution and geographical information system applications among others.

The 28 international customer satellites were launched as part of the commercial arrangements between ISRO and its commercial arm Antrix Corporation Ltd.

The co-passenger satellites include three micro and 25 nano-satellites from six countries -- Canada, Finland, France, Korea, the United Kingdom and US.

According to ISRO, the Cartosat-2 series satellite carries panchromatic and multi-spectral cameras operating in Time Delay Integration mode and is capable of delivering high-resolution data.

India sends its 100th satellite into space to watch borders

When Dr Vikram Sarabhai established ISRO in 1969, he had a vision in mind. The organisation must grow and stand ahead of many world superpowers. Today at 9:58 am with the launch of its 100th satellite from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sri Harikota, India became the only developing country to be part of a centurion&rsquo;s club. The PSLV-C-40 Rocket of ISRO placed a total of 31 satellites and a payload of over 1323 Kilograms in a polar sun-synchronous orbit.

This launch was unique. All the 31 satellites were not launched together. The first satellite was placed in an orbit 359 Km above the earth while other 30 satellites were placed in a 550 Km high orbit. It involved two stages and both successful. It proves that the Indian scientists are still carrying the lineages of Varahmihir, Aryabhatta and many others who placed India as a &ldquo;Vishwaguru&rdquo; or the teacher of the world once upon a time.&nbsp;

ISRO is, technically, the youngest of the top 5 space organisations. It faced serious setbacks due to restrictions but, nevertheless, succeeded in catapulting India among the top 5 space powers of the world. And the reason to rejoice is that this entire success is attributable to our sheer hard work and no other country had been involved in this success. We developed everything at our own from scratch and the result is astounding. That&rsquo;s the beauty of our technology.

The journey of satellite launch with ISRO which started with the launch of a small 35 Kg Rohini I satellite through Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) in 1980 which is now grown to a capacity of 4 Tonnes with GSLV MK III in just 30 years. The variety of satellites also progressed with time.&nbsp; Rohini-I had just simple remote sensing capability while modern day Cartosat-2 which can provide crystal clear images of less than 1-meter resolution. We are launching satellites in multiple orbits with the use of a single launch vehicle.

Today Indian scientists are experts in the technology of multiple burns which is switching on and switching off the Rocket&rsquo;s engine multiple times to control its height. Everything was controlled remotely with the precision of a nuclear clock.&nbsp;

ISRO&rsquo;s Workhorse PSLV has proved its mettle once again. PSLV has the lowest failure rate and out of its 42 launches, only two have failed. This is the reason why the countries who used to send Indian satellites in the space a few decades back are now relying on ISRO to send their satellites in the space due to the accuracy and low error probability of Indian technology. It has the rare distinction to launch Chandrayan I and Mangalyaan too.

Earlier Launch vehicles did not have such brilliant success ratio. We have grown from 50% of SLV and ASLV to 95% of PSLV and now the future of ISRO is visible in GSLV Mk III with 100% success rate till now.&nbsp;

Today India boasts its own Global Positioning System (NAViC) run through IRNSS Satellites which is unique in the world and can deliver good results even if one of the desired satellite is out of communication.&nbsp;

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday launched Earth observation <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/isros-pslv-c40-successfully-launches-31-satellites-29295">Cartosat-2 series satellite</a> from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. It was successfully placed into orbit shortly after the launch.

This satellite is the seventh remote sensing satellite in its series and has the mission life of five years.

It carries panchromatic and multi-spectral cameras operating in Time Delay Integration mode and is capable of delivering high resolution data. It will be the third satellite in the Cartosat-2 series.

According to ISRO, the Cartosat-2 series satellite launch is a follow-on mission with the primary objective of providing high resolution scene specific spot imageries.

ISRO had successfully launched Cartosat-2 Series satellite on June 22, 2016. It is similar to the earlier Cartosat-2, 2A and 2B.

The images sent by Cartosat-2 series satellite will be useful in monitoring urban and rural applications, coastal land use regulation, managing services like road networks and water distribution, detecting changes in geographical features and creation of land use maps.

The flight was the first since the setback suffered by the PSLV in August last and demonstrated that the workhorse rocket is back in the game for reliable satellite launches in the low earth and polar orbits.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday launched Earth observation Cartosat-2 series satellite from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. It was successfully placed into orbit shortly after the launch. This satellite is the seventh remote sensing satellite in its series and has the mission life of five years. It carries panchromatic and multi-spectral cameras operating in Time Delay Integration mode and is capable of delivering high resolution data. It will be the third satellite in the Cartosat-2 series. According to ISRO, the Cartosat-2 series satellite launch is a follow-on mission with the primary objective of providing high resolution scene specific spot imageries. ISRO had successfully launched Cartosat-2 Series satellite on June 22, 2016. It is similar to the earlier Cartosat-2, 2A and 2B. The images sent by Cartosat-2 series satellite will be useful in monitoring urban and rural applications, coastal land use regulation, managing services like road networks and water distribution, detecting changes in geographical features and creation of land use maps. The flight was the first since the setback suffered by the PSLV in August last and demonstrated that the workhorse rocket is back in the game for reliable satellite launches in the low earth and polar orbits.
