The attacks were also the worst ever against Sri Lanka's small Christian minority, who make up just seven per cent of the country's population of 21 million.

Investigators are now hunting for clues on whether the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/national-thowheeth-jamathntj-police-probe-sri-lanka-local-terror-groups-international-link-212667">National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ) group</a> received "international support", said cabinet minister and government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne.

The spokesman added that it was not possible for such "a small organisation" to carry out such well-coordinated suicide strikes.

The state of emergency, which gave police and the military special powers to counter militant strikes, came into force at midnight. Suspects can be detained without a court order.

The country was already observing a second straight night-time curfew since the attacks.

Officials are also investigating why more precautions were not taken after an April 11 warning from Sri Lanka's police that a "foreign intelligence agency" had reported the NTJ planned suicide attacks on churches.&nbsp;

Senaratne said that warning was not passed on to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe or other top ministers.&nbsp;

"Intelligence sections have reported that there are international terror groups which are behind local terrorists," President Maithripala Sirisena's office said in a statement.&nbsp;

Sirisena was due to meet with foreign diplomats on Tuesday "to seek international assistance to combat terrorism", his office said.

Toll mounts, tensions high

Tensions remained high, with a bomb detonating as police prepared to defuse it near one of the targeted churches. Although there was a powerful blast, no injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Police also found 87 bomb detonators at a Colombo bus station.

The toll rose dramatically Monday to at least 290 dead.

A police source told AFP that at least 37 foreigners were killed, while the tourism minister put that figure at 39 and the foreign ministry said there were 31 foreigners among the fatalities.

That number was likely to shift again, as the United States reported at least four Americans killed -- including a young student -- and the Netherlands raised their toll to three.&nbsp;

A Danish billionaire lost three of his children in the attacks, a spokesman for his company said.

The death toll also included eight Britons, eight Indians and nationals from Turkey, Australia, France, Japan and Portugal, according to Sri Lankan officials and foreign governments.

Four Janata Dal (Secular) workers, who went to Sri Lanka on a holiday on April 20, have were killed in a series of explosions on Easter Sunday.&nbsp;

They were part of a seven-member team and belonged to the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka.

The deceased have been identified as Lakshmana Gowda Ramesh, KM Lakshminarayan, M Rangappa and KG Hanumantharayappa.

The three others who are missing are H ShivuKumar, A Maregowda and H Puttaraju.

They were reportedly staying at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo.

“Out of the seven missings after the Terror Attack, four have been declared dead. Their names are Lakshmana Gowda Ramesh, K M Lakshminarayan, M Rangappa, KG Hanumantharayappa,” said Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy in a tweet.

Four JD(S) workers killed in Sri Lanka blasts

"We can confirm that British nationals were among those killed in today's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/sri-lanka-blasts-pm-says-priority-is-to-ensure-terrorism-doesnt-lift-its-head-in-country-212406">horrific attacks in Sri Lanka</a>," a Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman told AFP.

"Our staff are supporting the relatives of the victims and are continuing to work with the relevant authorities to obtain further information.

"We extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and all those affected by this senseless tragedy."

The spokeswoman did not give a figure for the Britons killed, but a &nbsp;government ministry source said London was aware of at least five British fatalities.

A series of eight devastating bomb blasts ripped through high-end hotels and churches holding Easter services, killing more than 200 people, including dozens of foreigners.

James Dauris, Britain's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, was attending an Easter Day church service in Colombo that was cut short by the attacks. He visited UK nationals in hospital in the capital and called the attacks "evil".

'Truly appalling' attacks&nbsp;

British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the blasts, saying on Twitter: "The acts of violence against churches and hotels in Sri Lanka are truly appalling, and my deepest sympathies go out to all of those affected at this tragic time.

"We must stand together to make sure that no one should ever have to practise their faith in fear."

In her Easter message released just hours before the blasts, May -- the daughter of an Anglican vicar -- offered her support to Christians around the world who face "huge danger" because of their faith.

She said: "Churches have been attacked. Christians murdered. Families forced to flee their homes.
