Spain midfielder Dani Olmo said on Friday that the team enjoyed the challenging path they faced to reach the Euro 2024 final, winning a tough group and taking down Germany and France, and are pumped up for their clash against England on Sunday.

Olmo came on as a substitute to grab a goal and an assist to help Spain beat the hosts in the quarter-finals and scored the winner against France after they had initially gone behind.

The 26-year-old said that doing things the hard way was the perfect motivation for a competitive group of players.

"We've had to go through the hard road and should be proud of how we got here. The style of game we are playing is what got us here," Olmo told a press conference. "We are feeling really good and charged-up, well prepared, physically and mentally at our best. We know we have a unique opportunity on Sunday. We are super-motivated for the game to come.

"All we are thinking now is about the final. Ninety minutes away from glory, from being able to win a European Championship twelve years later (after last triumph in Euro 2012). Our motivation is at its peak... Can't wait!"

Olmo acknowledged that England's path was also tough and that their opponents have shown a fighting spirit throughout the tournament that deserved respect.

However, he didn't think that Spain needed to alter their attacking style for Sunday's clash.

"If it's working, why change? We are playing with a unique and personalised idea, it's what we are as a team. We can always do new things and improve, as the coach says, but the idea will be the same," Olmo said.

"England are a team that has shown that they never give up... But we have suffered too. Against Germany, winning in extra time... against France it wasn't easy...

"It's true that we played well. But we've just lost a European Championship semi-final four years ago. We have that bad experience and learned how to improve. We are not concerned about the road they have travelled. We focus on our own.

"For me, the two best teams are the ones that go through to the final. We will try to focus on ourselves and do our best."

‘We are charged up and well prepared' - Dani Olmo on Spain’s buildup to Euro Final against England

England coach Sarina Wiegman said her team could be "very proud" of themselves having reached their first Women's World Cup final, despite falling to a 1-0 defeat by Spain on Sunday.

Olga Carmona's first-half strike was enough to clinch a maiden world title for the Spanish in just their third World Cup appearance.

European champions England went into the tournament missing key players through injury and struggled to convince at times, but found a way to overcome every challenge to reach the showpiece match for the first time.

Wiegman said it would take time for the players to realise the scale of their achievement.

"Of course, everyone was very disappointed that we didn't win the game. On the other hand, I think we can we can be very proud of ourselves, although that doesn't feel that way at this moment," the 53-year-old told a press conference. "That takes a little time, because now the disappointment is the most of what you feel.

"But everything we've done, how we have grown into the tournament, the challenges we had before the tournament, during the tournament, how we have adapted to situations.

"And we have given everything what we could in this tournament and also in this game...That's what I said to them, we could still be proud."

It is the second World Cup final defeat for Wiegman, who took her native Netherlands to the title match in 2019 where they lost 2-0 to the United States.

Already trailing to Carmona's strike, England could have gone two down after the hour mark when Spain were given a penalty for a handball by Keira Walsh, though the decision looked harsh on the midfielder and Wiegman said it was "way too light".

However, goalkeeper Mary Earps, who took the tournament's Golden Glove award, saved the spot kick, a moment which the coach thought would give her team the momentum to get back into the game.

"It was a crucial moment that she stopped that penalty and I actually thought we have the momentum now, we're going to get back and score a goal. I was really convinced about that," she said. "But she had two or three other very good saves in the game and I think the goalkeeper of Spain had some very good saves. It was a very open game."

England's Sarina Wiegman proud of her team despite narrow World Cup final defeat

Spain scripted history by beating England 1-0 to win their maiden Women’s World Cup on Sunday in Sydney. A solo goal in the 29th minute by full-back Olga Carmona saw Spain remain ahead of the favourites England in the all-important final. A game that saw too many misses from both sides ended with the Spanish team standing tall after 103 minutes of regular-time play. With the captain leading from the front, Spain created more chances than England during the final, including missing a second-half penalty. In front of a whopping 76,000–plus crowd, this win over England means a lot for Jorge Vilda and the Spanish football federation – who decided to stick with the coach after around 15 players last year said they don't wish to play under the coach. After Germany, USA, Norway and Japan, Spain became the fifth country overall and the third European nation to lift the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. In front of Spain's Queen Letizia, captain and defender Carmona converted her one-shot at goal into a winner in the 29th to see her side take the lead. England coach Sarina Wiegman decided against bringing Chelsea striker Lauren James after her two-match ban, instead went ahead with the same team that defeated host Australia 3-1 in the semis. Playing in their second blue kit, England got an early chance in the fifth minute itself, but Lauren Hemp’s missed opportunity saw no glory for the English side. Spain, banking on this missed chance, made the most of theirs after captain Carmona glided one straight into the right corner to open the scoring for her side. Spain made light work of England in the second half England coach Wiegman, who suffered agony in the summit clash in 2019 when her Netherlands team lost 2-0 to the United States, made a double change at the break. That, however, did make a little switch in momentum to England’s side, but then that’s it. The Spanish team made light work of their opponents amid heavy fouls on players from each side. With 20 minutes left in the game, Spain was awarded a penalty, and after never-ending drama between both sides, Jennifer Hermoso missed the golden chance to double the lead, as England camp looked relieved. The match officials indicated 13 minutes of injury time, and despite all efforts from the English side, including missing a last-second header, they failed to level the score and as a result, fell behind in the race. With a score of 1-0, Spain Women’s Team beat England won and won their first silverware at the World Cups. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
