The Tesla Roadster uses SpaceX cold gas thrusters to release compressed air, avoiding the dangerous fire of chemical rockets. This ensures extreme acceleration and aerial mobility without extreme heat.

While traditional rocket engines use volatile liquid fuels and combustion, the new Tesla Roadster uses SpaceX cold gas thrusters that release highly compressed air for safe, explosive acceleration.

Tesla Roadster's thrusters vs rocket engines: What's the difference?

SpaceX's latest attempt to launch its giant Starship rocket ended dramatically on the launch pad after an automatic abort stopped the mission just moments before liftoff in South Texas. The countdown had reached zero, the launch pad's water deluge system activated and the Super Heavy booster began igniting its engines. But within seconds, the engines shut down and the mission was cancelled automatically. Soon afterwards, Elon Musk explained the reason on X, saying that some of the Raptor engines failed to start, triggering the onboard safety system. He added that SpaceX will replace two engines and target another launch attempt next week.
What went wrong during launch?
According to SpaceX's live broadcast, multiple engines failed to ignite properly during startup. The Starship system relies on dozens of Raptor engines firing in a carefully timed sequence. If enough engines fail to reach required performance, onboard software immediately aborts the launch to prevent a catastrophic failure. The automatic shutdown worked exactly as intended, avoiding damage to the rocket and launch infrastructure. Engineers must now safely drain thousands of tonnes of cryogenic methane and liquid oxygen before inspecting the affected engines and preparing the vehicle for another attempt.
Why this mission mattered
This was more than another Starship test.SpaceX planned to launch the first third-generation Starlink satellites, representing the next evolution of its global satellite internet network. Although the satellites were expected to burn up after deployment because Starship has yet to demonstrate a complete orbital mission, the flight would have validated key technologies for future operational launches. The mission also marked Starship's return after May's first Version 3 (V3) test flight, during which both the Super Heavy booster and upper stage experienced technical issues despite achieving several important milestones. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) only cleared SpaceX to fly again earlier this week after reviewing corrective actions following the previous test.
Starship remains central to SpaceX's future
Despite the setback, Starship remains the centrepiece of SpaceX's long-term strategy. The fully reusable rocket is designed to carry massive satellite payloads, support future Moon missions under NASA's Artemis programme and eventually transport humans to Mars.It is also expected to deploy larger and more capable Starlink satellites that could significantly expand SpaceX's satellite broadband business—the company's biggest source of revenue. The launch attempt also came weeks after SpaceX's record-breaking public listing. Investor attention has intensified as the company works to prove Starship can become a reliable commercial launch system. While the aborted launch disappointed spectators, it also demonstrated the importance of automated safety systems. Rather than risking an explosion after detecting abnormal engine performance, Starship shut itself down exactly as designed. If repairs proceed as planned, SpaceX hopes to try again as early as next week.

Just a few days after completing one of the most closely watched public listings in technology history, SpaceX has announced another major move. The company has agreed to acquire AI coding startup Cursor in a $60 billion all-stock deal, according to details released by the company. The transaction comes less than two months after the companies announced a strategic partnership and marks one of the largest acquisitions ever involving an AI software company. The move is attracting attention not only because of its size, but also because of what it signals about SpaceX's future priorities.
Why SpaceX wants Cursor
SpaceX says the acquisition is designed to strengthen its artificial intelligence division, which has become a central part of the company's long-term strategy. The AI unit is built around xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, which merged with SpaceX earlier this year. SpaceX has repeatedly highlighted AI as one of its biggest growth opportunities, telling investors that artificial intelligence could eventually represent a multi-trillion-dollar market. Cursor specialises in AI-powered coding tools that help developers write, edit and improve software. The company has emerged as one of the fastest-growing names in the AI industry as demand for autonomous coding assistants has surged.By bringing Cursor into the business, SpaceX gains access to technology that many believe could become a core part of the next generation of software development.
A startup that grew at remarkable speed
Founded in 2022 under the name Anysphere, Cursor quickly became one of the most talked-about AI startups. The company participated in OpenAI's startup accelerator programme and attracted significant investor interest as AI coding tools gained popularity. Before the acquisition announcement, Cursor was reportedly preparing a new funding round that could have valued the company at around $50 billion. The startup had already raised billions of dollars from investors over the past two years and built a reputation as one of the strongest challengers in the rapidly growing AI coding market. The timing is hard to ignoreThe acquisition arrives at a pivotal moment for SpaceX. Following its blockbuster IPO, the company's share price surged, adding hundreds of billions of dollars to its market value in a matter of days. That stronger valuation may have made a large stock-based acquisition easier to execute. At the same time, SpaceX's AI division has faced challenges. The company has been restructuring parts of its AI operations while attempting to address controversies surrounding AI-generated content and the performance of some products. The Cursor deal appears aimed at accelerating development while bringing in proven AI talent and technology.
A bet on the future of AI
SpaceX has repeatedly argued that artificial intelligence represents one of the largest opportunities in technology. Company presentations have highlighted opportunities ranging from AI infrastructure to enterprise software applications. Cursor fits directly into that strategy because software development is increasingly becoming one of the most important uses of generative AI. Many industry analysts believe coding assistants could become standard tools for developers in the coming years. If that happens, Cursor could become one of the most strategically important acquisitions in SpaceX's history. SpaceX expects the transaction to close during the third quarter, subject to customary approvals. For investors, the deal offers an early indication of how the company plans to use its newly strengthened position following its public listing. For the wider technology industry, it underscores a broader trend: competition in artificial intelligence is moving beyond chatbots and into specialised tools that can automate increasingly complex tasks. The acquisition also sends a clear message. SpaceX is no longer positioning itself solely as a space and satellite company. It is increasingly presenting itself as a major AI player, and the Cursor deal may be one of its boldest moves yet.

SpaceX has agreed to acquire AI coding startup Cursor in a $60 billion stock deal shortly after its blockbuster IPO. The acquisition strengthens the company's AI ambitions, expands its software capabilities and signals a deeper push into the fast-growing market for autonomous coding tools.

SpaceX to acquire Cursor for $60 billion: Why it could be the company's most important deal yet

SpaceX is one of the world's most valuable companies. But before reaching orbit, the company suffered three consecutive rocket failures. Those setbacks offer lessons that many founders still discuss today. SpaceX is known for launching astronauts, operating the Starlink satellite network and building some of the world's most advanced rockets. The company's public listing in 2026 pushed its valuation into the trillion-dollar range and further strengthened the wealth of founder Elon Musk.
Yet in its early years, SpaceX looked anything but unstoppable.
Between 2006 and 2008, the company suffered three failed Falcon 1 launches. Money was becoming scarce, pressure was growing and many doubted whether the business would survive. The fourth launch finally succeeded and changed the company's future. For founders and entrepreneurs, those difficult years still offer valuable lessons.Failure is information, not the endThe first Falcon 1 launch failed in 2006 due to an engine-related problem. The second mission in 2007 also failed. A third launch in August 2008 came close to reaching orbit but ultimately fell short. Many businesses view failure as a sign to stop. SpaceX took a different approach. After each launch, engineers analysed what went wrong, made changes and prepared for another attempt. The company treated failures as a source of information rather than proof that the idea itself was flawed. For founders, the lesson is clear: understanding mistakes can be more valuable than avoiding them.Persistence matters, but learning matters moreContinuing after setbacks is important, but persistence alone is not enough.SpaceX did not simply repeat the same process four times. The company adjusted designs, improved systems and used lessons from previous launches. The eventual success of Falcon 1 was built on hundreds of small improvements. For start-ups, resilience works best when combined with continuous learning.Managing resources can determine survivalBy 2008, SpaceX was under significant financial pressure. Musk was investing much of his own money into both SpaceX and Tesla. Resources were limited and the company had little room for further mistakes. Rather than expanding rapidly, SpaceX remained focused on its core objective: getting a rocket into orbit. Many young companies struggle because they attempt too many things at once. SpaceX's experience highlights the importance of concentrating resources on the most important goal.
Build a team that believes in the mission
One of the lesser-known aspects of SpaceX's early years was the commitment of its workforce. Hundreds of employees continued working through failed launches and uncertainty about the company's future. Without that belief in the mission, the company may not have survived long enough to achieve success. For founders, building a strong team culture can be just as important as raising money or developing technology.
Breakthroughs often arrive after the hardest period
The fourth Falcon 1 launch succeeded on September 28, 2008. It became the first privately developed liquid-fuel rocket to reach orbit and helped establish SpaceX as a serious player in the space industry. That breakthrough came after years of setbacks and just when the company was facing its greatest pressure. While every business is different, the story serves as a reminder that important progress sometimes comes after repeated disappointments.
Why the SpaceX story still resonates
SpaceX's first three failures are now part of business and technology history. The company that once struggled to reach orbit is today one of the world's most influential firms. Its rockets carry astronauts, launch satellites and support global communications through Starlink. For founders, the biggest lesson may be that early setbacks do not always determine the final outcome. What matters is how a company responds when things go wrong.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is aiming to conduct 10,000 launches a year within the next five years, according to US Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Bryan Bedford, who revealed details of a recent meeting with SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell. The target would represent a dramatic increase from the company’s current launch pace and further expand SpaceX’s dominance in the commercial space industry. Speaking after an aviation forum on Wednesday, Bedford said Shotwell discussed “the SpaceX five-year vision to get to 10,000 launches a year”.
