In response to growing public unease following a recent electric vehicle (EV) fire incident, South Korean officials gathered on Monday to deliberate on EV safety measures and consider mandating automobile manufacturers to disclose battery brands. The urgent meeting was prompted by a fire that occurred on August 1, which appeared to ignite spontaneously in a Mercedes-Benz EV parked in an underground garage. The blaze resulted in extensive damage to an apartment complex, taking firefighters eight hours to extinguish and causing destruction or damage to approximately 140 vehicles. The incident forced some residents to seek temporary shelter elsewhere.

The high-level meeting, led by the country's vice environment minister, brought together representatives from the transport and industry ministries, as well as the national fire agency. The government is expected to announce new regulations in the near future to address these safety concerns.

Following the emergency meeting, the transport ministry has scheduled talks with major automakers, including Hyundai Motor Group, Mercedes-Benz Korea, and Volkswagen Group Korea, for Tuesday. These discussions will focus on the proposal to require disclosure of battery brands used in EVs, according to media reports. As of now, the ministry has not provided immediate comment on these reports, and the automakers have yet to respond to requests for comment.

The widely circulated images of dozens of charred vehicles, reduced to mere metal frames in the parking lot fire, have intensified consumer fears regarding EVs. These concerns are particularly pronounced in South Korea, where a significant portion of the population resides in apartment complexes, often with underground parking facilities.

Adding to the public's apprehension, another EV fire incident occurred earlier this month involving Kia Corp's electric crossover EV6, which uses batteries manufactured by South Korean company SK On. The vehicle caught fire in a parking lot, as reported by fire authorities.

Automotive experts note that EV fires differ from those in traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. EV fires tend to burn for longer periods and are more challenging to extinguish due to their tendency to reignite.

A report published in February by the Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters revealed that between 2013 and 2022, 1,399 fires occurred in underground parking lots across South Korea. Of these incidents, 43.7 per cent were attributed to vehicles, with electrical sources accounting for 53 percent of car fires in underground garages.

Last week, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported that South Korea was planning to require EV manufacturers to disclose the brand of batteries used in their vehicles. Currently, automakers are obligated to provide certain information about vehicles, such as fuel efficiency, but only limited details about batteries are required, and they are not mandated to name the manufacturers.

In response to numerous inquiries about EV battery makers, Hyundai Motor Co took the initiative on Saturday to identify the manufacturers of batteries used in their 13 EV models, including three models from its Genesis brand, on its website. The disclosure revealed that Hyundai and Genesis EVs utilise batteries from various companies, including South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES) and SK On, as well as China's CATL.

Moon Hak-hoon, a professor of automotive engineering at Osan University, cautioned that merely requiring car companies to disclose the make of an EV battery would not prevent fires. He suggested that certifying the fire hazards of each battery brand would be more beneficial in addressing safety concerns.

Park Moon-woo, the lead author of a report on responding to EV fires in underground garages, acknowledged that disclosure would provide buyers with more options. However, he noted that currently, there is no definitive data indicating which EV battery brands are more susceptible to fires.

As South Korea grapples with these safety concerns, the government's forthcoming regulations and industry responses will likely play a crucial role in shaping consumer confidence in electric vehicles and influencing the future of EV adoption in the country.

When France announced the unique idea of holding the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games outdoors, it already had everyone's concerns, especially the meteorologists who had predicted that the rainy weather in July could lead to a 'disaster' and this prediction seemed to be turning true when on July 26 (Friday), the celebrities, royals, politicians and Parisians were seen seeking shelter amid heavy downpour.

Upside-down flag, S Korea confused as North: Here's how Paris embarrassed itself in Olympics opening ceremony

South Korea's sports ministry on Saturday expressed regret over a gaffe during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics in which its athletes were incorrectly introduced as North Korean.

As the South Korean delegation rode a boat on the Seine River and entered the ceremony as the 48th participating nation, the French-speaking presenter introduced them using the official name for North Korea: "Republique populaire democratique de Coree" in French, then "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" in English.

South Korea: Three Chinese students arrested over drone footage of US aircraft carrier

Three Chinese students are under investigation by South Korean police for allegedly taking illegal photographs of a US aircraft carrier visiting the country, according to reports from Korean media on Wednesday (July 24).

The Chinese nationals were arrested on June 25 for allegedly flying a drone towards the Naval Operations Command in Busan and capturing unauthorised images of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which was docked at the base.

The Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the drone recorded over five minutes of footage of the carrier and its surroundings.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier part of Carrier Strike Group 9, arrived at Busan Naval Base on June 22. It was accompanied by the destroyers USS Halsey and USS Daniel Inouye for a joint naval exercise involving South Korea, the United States, and Japan.

Busan police have accused the Chinese nationals of violating the Enforcement Decree of the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act. This law states that individuals caught photographing military bases or facilities without authorisation can face up to three years in prison or a fine of 30 million won (US$21,700).

North Korea on Wednesday (July 24) escalated its propaganda war by sending trash-carrying balloons that struck a high-profile target: the South Korean presidential compound.

Citing security officials, AFP reports that this incident prompted a swift response from Seoul, which mobilised chemical response teams.

Direct hit on the presidential compound

This marks the first instance where the South Korean leader's office in downtown Seoul, a highly secured area protected by numerous soldiers and a no-fly zone, was directly impacted by the thousands of trash-carrying balloons launched by Pyongyang since May.

"The chemical, biological, and radiological (warfare) response team has safely collected the trash balloons," the presidential security service confirmed to AFP.

This comes as South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff previously confirmed the launch of these balloons by the North. Now, Seoul authorities on Wednesday have issued a warning to the city's citizens, urging them to avoid touching any fallen balloons and to report them.

"If you find any fallen balloons, do not touch them, and report them to the nearest military unit or police station."

The nation claims this is a retaliation for South Korean activists frequently launching balloons carrying anti-regime propaganda leaflets and money across the border into North Korea. These campaigns have long infuriated Pyongyang, which possibly fears that outside information could destabilise the tightly controlled society and threaten the Kim Jong-un regime.

In May, North Korea threatened to take similar action. Kim Kang Il, a vice-minister of defence, on May 26 warned that "Tit-for-tat action will be taken against frequent scattering of leaflets and other rubbish by the ROK near border areas." Here, ROK refers to the Republic of Korea, the South's official name.

"Mounds of wastepaper and filth will soon be scattered over the border areas and the interior of the ROK and it will directly experience how much effort is required to remove them," Kim reiterated in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

Researchers have created a 'long-range', 'large-volume' and remote mind control device in South Korea and are now planning to use this technology for 'non-invasive' medical procedures.

The never-ever-heard hardware was developed by the researchers of Korea's Institute for Basic Science (IBS). This device is capable of manipulating a human brain from a distance with the help of magnetic fields.

The technology was tested by inducing 'maternal' instincts in the test subjects which were female mice.

The researchers also exposed some lab mice to the magnetic fields which were designed to reduce the appetite and it resulted in a 10 percent loss in body weight.

North Korea installing more landmines along front line that could sweep into the South: Report

In a significant move, South Korea's Supreme Court upheld a ruling that same-sex partners were eligible for spousal benefits from the state insurer.

The ruling affirmed a significant precedent set by the Seoul High Court early last year, which mandated the National Health Insurance Service to grant equal spousal coverage to So Sung-wook and Kim Yong-min, a gay couple, who had sued the agency in 2021 after it revoked their spousal benefits.

Emotional response from plaintiffs

"I couldn’t believe when I heard the ruling. I was extremely happy and I started crying. It took four years to earn this dependent status and…we need to fight harder to legalize same-sex marriage going forward," Kim Yong-min told Reuters.

Even though the national health insurance act makes no mention of it, Chief Justice Jo Hee-de declared that depriving individuals of these benefits based on their gender amounted to discrimination based on sexual orientation.

"It is an act of discrimination that violates human dignity and value, the right to pursue happiness, freedom of privacy and the right to equality before the law, and the degree of violation is serious," Jo told a televised trial.

Despite having had a wedding ceremony and frequently being referred to as a married couple, So and Kim's union is not legally recognised in South Korea. Advocates and attorneys said that this decision represents South Korea's first official acceptance of a same-sex union.

A lower court originally ruled in favour of the insurer, stating that a same-sex union could not be recognised as a common-law marriage under current laws. However, this decision was later overturned by the appellate court.

Why is this ruling significant?

The South Korean Supreme Court's ruling is a "stepping stone for progress" towards marriage equality, activist Horim Yi at Marriage For All, an LGBTQ+ campaign group, said.

Conservative religious groups in South Korea strongly oppose anti-discrimination laws, causing many individuals from the LGBTQ+ community to conceal their identities at work as they fight for equality.

Before the ruling, members of conservative Christian groups protested outside the court, displaying a banner that said, "Same-sex families are nonsense. Supreme Court, overturn the Seoul High Court's ruling!"

In South Korea, a politician has linked the rise in male suicides to the increase in the number of working women.

Councillor Kim Ki-duck argues that the increasing participation of women in the workforce has made it more challenging for men to secure jobs and find marriage partners. He claims that the shift towards a "female-dominant society" might "partly be responsible for an increase in male suicide attempts".

As per the BBC, Kim based his assertions on data from Seoul's Han River, which indicates that suicide attempts along the river had increased from 430 in 2018 to 1,035 in 2023 — with the proportion of men rising from 67 per cent to 77 per cent.

He argues that the way to overcome "the female-domination phenomenon" was to improve people's awareness of gender equality so that "men and women can enjoy equal opportunities".

In a comment to BBC, he later defended his claims and said he had "not intended to be critical of the female-dominated society".

Kim faces backlash

The politician is facing backlash for his claims. Experts in suicide prevention have criticised his conclusions as unfounded and potentially harmful.

Song In Han, a mental health professor at Seoul’s Yonsei University, highlighted the global trend of higher male suicide rates and said, "It is dangerous and unwise to make claims like this without sufficient evidence."

Song In San noted that there was a need for scientific study to understand the reasons behind the surge in male suicide attempts in Seoul, and said it was "very regrettable" that the councillor had made it about gender conflict.

Kim faces backlash The politician is facing backlash for his claims. Experts in suicide prevention have criticised his conclusions as unfounded and potentially harmful. Song In Han, a mental health professor at Seoul’s Yonsei University, highlighted the global trend of higher male suicide rates and said, "It is dangerous and unwise to make claims like this without sufficient evidence." Song In San noted that there was a need for scientific study to understand the reasons behind the surge in male suicide attempts in Seoul, and said it was "very regrettable" that the councillor had made it about gender conflict.
