South Africa's governing party - the African National Congress (ANC) launched its manifesto for the May 29 elections, in which some polls suggest its share of the vote could fall below 50% for the first time. Kwazulu Natal is considered a key battleground. Will the age-old party weather the storm ahead or will the opposition be able to convince the masses?

In the heart of South Africa, a mother's love for her daughter and her heritage sparked a movement. Lungile Zenda's TikTok channel, where she shares snippets of her teaching her young daughter, Luyanda, to speak Zulu, has become more than just a series of amusing videos. It's a beacon of hope for linguistic diversity and cultural preservation in a country where English dominance in work and education threatens to overshadow indigenous languages.

Nearly 500 rhinos were killed in South Africa last year, the environment ministry reported. At least 499 of the thick-skinned herbivores were killed in 2023 in state-run parks, even as the government claimed it was making efforts to tackle the illegal trade in horns.

Out of 499 deaths, 307 took place in the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, Africa's oldest reserve located in eastern KwaZulu-Natal province. "This is the highest poaching loss within this province," said Environment Minister Barbara Creecy.

"Multi-disciplinary teams continue to work tirelessly in an attempt to slow this relentless pressure," she added.

Efforts by South African government

Efforts by the government have shown scattered positive results, with lower poaching cases being registered in the Kruger National Park.

An impressive 37 per cent decrease from 2022 was recorded here last year, with 78 rhinos poached and killed. No rhinos were poached in any other national park in the country.

This is the direct result of the authorities resorting to tightening the security and mandating new employees to take a lie detector test amid concerns that some workers might be in cahoots with poachers.

Law enforcement agencies also cracked down on poachers last year. At least 49 suspected poachers were detained by police in 2023 from the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi park.

As per the minister, at least 45 of the poachers were tried in courts. One of them was a former field ranger who was given a 10-year jail term for killing a rhino.

Why are rhinos killed?

Rhinos are killed as their horns are highly sought in black markets. In terms of weight, the price of rhino horn puts even gold and cocaine to shame. This makes unguarded rhinos roaming in jungles and national parks an easy target for illegal horn traders.

Overall Africa showing impressive numbers

Overall, the last few years have turned out to be comparatively impressive for Africa’s rhino conservation programme.

At the end of 2022, nearly 23,300 rhinos roamed on the continent, a growth of 5.2 per cent against 2021.

Wales will meet world champions South Africa in a one-off test at neutral Twickenham on June 22, a first fixture for the Springboks since the return of Rassie Erasmus as head coach following their Rugby World Cup triumph in France last year.

Warren Gatland's side will also travel to Australia for two tests, the first in Sydney on July 6 followed by a second match in Melbourne a week later. Both Wales and South Africa could be severely depleted for their meeting as the game will fall outside of World Rugby’s international window and on the same day scheduled for the United Rugby Championship final.

South Africa’s Stormers and Bulls, who both have a large number of Springboks, contested the URC final in 2022 and the former made a repeat appearances last year. They are in contention again. The Springboks inflicted a record 35-7 defeat on old foes New Zealand in front of a sizeable expatriate crowd at Twickenham last August, where they first experimented with their 7-1 split between forwards and backs on the bench.

Depleted or not, they will use this test to fine-tune for two home fixtures against Ireland in July, where the number one ranking in the world could be on the line.

"We have very fond memories of the World Cup warm-up test we played against the All Blacks at Twickenham last year," Erasmus said in a statement. "The fact that we’re playing Wales, who we have faced there before in an exhilarating 2015 World Cup quarter-final, will bring back plenty of memories as well."

Wales coach Warren Gatland is rebuilding his squad with young players and sees the clash at Twickenham as an important stepping-stone. South Africa thumped the Welsh 52-16 in a World Cup warm-up game in Cardiff in August.

"To have the opportunity for our young squad to test itself against the world champions at a neutral venue is an extremely important experience and something that we will relish," Gatland said. "We know the Wallabies will be hurting after the Rugby World Cup but Australia is a tough place to go and play rugby and we’re expecting a fired up side led by new head coach Joe Schmidt."

The match at Twickenham forms part of a double-header in South West London as a Robbie Deans-coached Barbarians side play Fiji later in the day.

South African nuclear scientists want to build a new generation of mini nuclear reactors, both to plug holes in their own country's blackout-plagued grid and to build an export industry for the future. Many are skeptical about the new idea working as the load shedding menace has been on-going for some time now.

Could mini nuclear stations plug South Africa's power gaps?

Officials in the South African city of Cape Town launched an investigation on Monday (Feb 19) to look for the source of the foul stench which has blanketed parts of the port city.

The stench which covered parts of Cape Town prompted the officials to inspect sewage facilities for leaks and an environmental health team was activated before the source of the smell was traced back to a ship carrying 19,000 cows from Brazil to Iraq.

The city is expected to get some respite from the foul smell soon, as per city authorities. Zahid Badroodien, an official in the mayor’s office in charge of water and sanitation took to X and said that investigators confirmed that the source of the smell “across the city is a ship in the harbour”.

A resident who works near the harbour told the BBC that the smell was “overwhelming” and they were forced to keep the windows of their car closed despite it being a hot day.

Incident draws ire of animal welfare groups, government

Addressing the incident, the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) reiterated its “firm stance against the live export of animals by sea”, in a statement, on Monday. A team, including an NSPCA veterinary consultant, went aboard the vessel to assess the welfare of the animals.

“This smell is indicative of the awful conditions the animals endure, having already spent 2½ weeks on board, with a build-up of faeces and ammonia. The stench onboard is unimaginable, yet the animals face this every single day,” said the NSPCA.

Substitute forward Kelechi Iheanacho and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali played key roles as Nigeria beat South Africa 4-2 on penalties on Wednesday (Feb 7) in an Africa Cup of Nations semi-final thriller. The three-time champions will face hosts Ivory Coast, who dominated the Democratic Republic of Congo but had to settle for a 1-0 win in Abidjan, in the final on Sunday. Nigeria triumphed after a 1-1 draw following extra time in Bouake in the latest of many dramatic matches at this biennial African football showpiece. "Our team has a huge state of mind. The team fights together, There are 25 of us (in the squad and) it's difficult to beat us," said Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro. "Deep down, thinking about that second cancelled (Nigerian) goal and the (South African equaliser), a lot of teams would have given up. "I am very happy, the players are happy, they deserve it, we deserve it, the Super Eagles deserve it, the Nigerian people deserve it." South Africa coach Hugo Broos said: "Football can be cruel. You play a bad match against Cape Verde, you win on penalties. You play a very good match against Nigeria and lose on penalties." Iheanacho from English second-tier club Leicester City had been an unused substitute in the five group and knockout matches that took the Super Eagles to the semi-finals. He was thrust into action by Portuguese Peseiro for the first time after 102 minutes against South Africa and calmly converted the decisive spot-kick. Nwabali, who plays for South African top-flight club Chippa United, saved shootout kicks from Teboho Mokoena and Evidence Makgopa. Peseiro, a long-time backer of under-fire incumbent shot-stopper Francis Uzoho, dropped him for the opening group match against Equatorial Guinea and Nwabali has been an ever present. Nwabali conceded once in a draw with the Equatoguineans, then kept four clean sheets before being beaten by a Mokoena penalty in the 90th minute of regular time. Mudau miss Nigeria had taken the lead 23 minutes earlier, also from a penalty, which captain William Troost-Ekong converted. Khuliso Mudau had a great chance to win the match for South Africa just before extra time but blazed over from close range. South Africa captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who saved four kicks in a quarter-final shootout win over Cape Verde, could not stop a single kick. Before Iheanacho netted, fellow substitutes Terem Moffi and Kenneth Omeruo and Troost-Ekong converted penalties and Ola Aina blazed over. In an absorbing match watched by a 32,000 crowd, Nigeria thought they had taken a two-goal lead on 85 minutes when star forward Victor Osimhen scored. But play was called back to the other end and, after the Egyptian referee checked the pitchside VAR monitor, he awarded South Africa the penalty that Mokoena netted. South Africa played the final seven minutes with 10 men after Grant Kekana was shown a straight red card for a last-defender foul on Moffi. The win sparked celebrations back in Nigeria. "For the first time in a long time we are excited, we are happy Nigeria beat South Africa," supporter Peace Nwanro said in Lagos. "Nigeria will keep winning." It will be the eighth final appearance by Nigeria, who were champions in 1980, 1994 and 2013, and the fourth by 1992 and 2015 title winners Ivory Coast. Later, after the seesaw struggle for supremacy in Bouake, the Ivory Coast continued a remarkable comeback in the tournament by defeating DR Congo. Sebastien Haller was the 65th-minute match-winner as his boot connected with a cross and the ball struck the ground, then rose over goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi and into the net. Haller had missed the group stage through injury before making his first appearance in a shock last-16 victory over Senegal. After a humiliating 4-0 thrashing by Equatorial Guinea in the group stage, the Ivorians squeezed into the knockout phase as the last of the four third-placed teams who qualified. But the embarrassment of a record home loss to the Equatoguineans was forgotten as Franck Kessie was denied by the woodwork and Haller missed a great chance before becoming the hero.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson scored a record second hundred on day 3 (Feb 6) in the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Mount Maunganui. Williamson scored 109 in addition to his 118 in the first innings and became only the fifth Kiwi batter to achieve the feat. Thanks to Williamson's century, New Zealand piled on more misery on inexperienced South Africa by taking their total lead to 528 runs with six wickets remaining by the end of play on Tuesday.

Before Williamson, Glenn Turner (1974), Geoff Howarth (1978), Andrew Jones (1991) and Peter Fulton (2013) had achieved the same feat for the Blackcaps. All of these five batters, however, scored the twin hundreds in a home Test.

Turner had scored 101 & 100 not out against Australia in Christchurch, Howarth hit 122 & 102 and England in Auckland, Jones managed 122 & 100 not out against Sri Lanka in Hamilton and Fulton recorded 136 & 110 against England in Auckland before Williamson.

This was Kiwi skipper's 31st Test century and 44th in international cricket (13 in ODIs). He also became the joint second fastest to reach 31 Test tons along with Australia's Steve Smith. India's Sachin Tendulkar remains the fastest to reach the milestone.

Williamson is now joint fourth, again with Smith, in terms of most international hundreds among active cricket players. Virat Kohli (80) leads the list of active cricketers with most international hundreds ahead England's Joe Root second (46), India's Rohit Sharma (46), Steve Smith (44) and Williamson (44).

New Zealand coach Gary Stead also praised Williamson for the feat and said: "I think it's only the (fifth) time in New Zealand history that a player has got two centuries in one match. So it's pretty special to be part of. He's been an incredible player for us and just keeps churning out the runs."

South Africa's ruling ANC suspends Jacob Zuma

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) suspended the country's former president Jacob Zuma from the party on Monday and vowed to launch a legal challenge against a rival group campaigning in his name.

Announcing the decision, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula declared: "Zuma, and others whose conduct is in conflict with our values and principles, will find themselves outside the African National Congress."

The decision, which was widely expected, will be seen as a further sign of disunity in the movement ahead of this year's general election, in which the long-dominant ANC is expected to lose ground.

Zuma was the fourth president of democratic South Africa from 2009 to 2018 but was forced from office under the cloud of corruption allegations and he has become estranged from the party he once led.

In December, he declared that he would be campaigning for a new party, uMkhonto We Sizwe (MK) or Spear of the Nation, named after the ANC's former armed wing during the anti-apartheid struggle.

Mbalula said that in addition to suspending Zuma, the ANC could complain to the electoral court to get the new party deregistered and mount a trademark challenge to recapture the name.

"The formation of MK party is not an accident," Mbalula declared after a meeting to the party's National Executive Committee, attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

"It is a deliberate attempt to use the proud history of the armed struggle against the apartheid regime to lend credibility to what is a blatantly counter-revolutionary agenda."

In its ruling, the ICJ said that it has taken into account the Israeli defence minister's comments regarding 'human animals' in Gaza. The court ruled that some of the acts and omissions committed by Israel are under the Genocide Convention's provisions. ICJ said that no evidence of genocide in Gaza must be destroyed.

The International Court of Justice has further ordered Israel to take all possible measures to prevent genocide and any kind of actions which fall under the scope of the Genocide Convention.

A case was filed by South Africa against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December, in which they had alleged that the devastating offensive against Hamas, in which 25,700 people were killed, amounted to state-led genocide and had breached the UN’s genocide convention, which was signed in 1948 in response to the Holocaust.

South Africa has appealed to the ICJ to impose nine orders on Israel which include immediate suspension of military activity and provide more access to humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza.
