South Africa building collapse: Six killed, dozens still trapped; rescuers establish contact with 11 survivors

A man from South Africa, who survived over 10 years in coma, has recounted his miraculous journey of recovery. Martin Pistorius, from Johannesburg, shared the terrifying experience of being trapped in his own body, unable to move or communicate, yet fully conscious of everything happening around him.

His struggles began at the age of 12 when he returned home from school with a sore throat, as reported by The Sun. Initially thought to be the flu, his condition deteriorated rapidly, resulting in the loss of mobility, independent eating, and communication abilities. Diagnosed with cryptococcal meningitis and brain tuberculosis, he eventually slipped into coma.

His mother said Martin's last words as a child were spoken in the hospital: "When home?"

Doctors said they couldn't do anything, but his parents decided to keep him alive in a care centre. Four years later, he woke up, but he still couldn't talk or move.

"I remember around my 16th birthday people talking about the stubble on my chin and wondering whether to shave me. It scared and confused me to listen to what was being said because, although I had no memories or sense of a past, I was sure I was a child and the voices were speaking about a soon-to-be man,'' he said.

He shared that he stayed informed about significant world events by listening to the television or people talking nearby.

'I was aware of everything, just like any normal person. Everyone was so used to me not being there that they didn't notice when I began to be present again. The stark reality hit me that I was going to spend the rest of my life like that – alone. For me, that feeling of complete and utter powerlessness is probably the worst feeling I have ever experienced, and I hope I never have to experience it again. It is like you don't exist, every single thing in your life is decided by someone else,'' he told NBC News.

Years went by, but he remained confined in a motionless body, with only his thoughts and imagination to keep him company.

In 2001, when he was 25 years old, a caregiver at the day centre urged his parents to take him to the Centre For Augmentative And Alternative Communication at the University Of Pretoria. There, he successfully passed a test by using eye movements to point at objects.

His parents then purchased a computer for him, equipped with communication software akin to what Stephen Hawking used. After extensive practice over many years, he became proficient in communicating through synthetic speech. Eventually, he mastered website development and graduated from university. In 2008, he met his future wife, Joan, through his sister Kim, and they married the following year. They welcomed their son, Sebastian Albert Pistorius, in 2018, and he often shares family photos on Instagram.

Currently, he is employed as a computer scientist and web developer.

Former South Africa skipper Dean Elgar has blamed head coach Shukri Conrad for his career being cut short. Elgar, who played 86 Tests for the Proteas, retired after the two-Test series against India in January earlier this year. Elgar currently plays for the English county team Essex.

"Shukri Conrad is the reason why my Test career was cut short," said Elgar in an interview to newspaper Rapport.

"It felt as though they did not recognise all my hard work over the previous year-and-a-half, that they didn’t realise how much we had improved as a team," he added on being replaced as the Test skipper with Temba Bavuma.

Elgar also said that the environment wasn't conducive and hence his form took a dive as well. Elgar captained South Africa in 18 Tests and scored 849 runs at an average of 26 against his all time average of 38.

"I became a part-time cricketer and full-time politician, something that I never want to go through again. I am a sportsman, not a politician or a cricket administrator, but I was thrown into a cauldron in which I had to be all three. If I had known that before, I would never have accepted the captaincy."

"I tried to make the best of a bad job, to control the things I could control. But my own form took a dive," he said.

He also noted that there was no acknowledgement for his efforts as skipper despite his team "from being sixth or seventh in the world we became a team with the potential to play in the World Test championship final".

Elgar ended his career with 5,347 runs in whites to go with 14 hundreds and 23 fifties. He, however, could not manage to score even a single double hundred in his career with 199 being his best score in an innings.

Conservation authorities on Friday (April 26) said that herds of endangered hippos, trapped in the mud of dried-up ponds, are at risk of dying in drought-hit Botswana. Southern Africa has been hit hard by a severe drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon, affecting harvests and leading millions into hunger.

Several countries in the region have recently declared a state of national disaster.

Close to the expansive wetlands of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana, the Thamalakane River, now dried up, has forced herds of hippos to migrate towards natural water reserves near the tourist town of Maun.

"The river system dries up and animals are in a compromised situation," said Lesego Moseki, spokesperson for Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) to AFP in Botswana's capital Gaborone.

Botswana is home to one of the world's largest wild hippo populations, estimated between 2,000 to 4,000 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

"The riverine vegetation is poor and the hippo in Ngamiland (northwestern district) depends on the water flowing through the Okavango Delta systems," Moseki said adding, "They were still looking into the how many hippos had died in the pools,".

Hippos have thick yet sensitive skin, requiring regular bathing to prevent sunburn, and they typically live in humid regions.

In the absence of water, they may become aggressive and venture into villages. Local authorities suggest relocating hippos to reserves to prevent conflicts with humans.
