His life takes a dramatic turn when he witnesses the murder of a teenage girl in the hotel, who just a day earlier had sought help from him to flee to India. The death shakes up Shaan and he goes underground (which we later find out was a planned move). Two years later, he comes face to face with businessman Shelly Rungta, a man who Shaan knows was responsible for killing the young girl. Rungta who travels with his entourage everywhere claims to be a tycoon of a shipping business but actually is an arms dealer, and often termed as 'the merchant of death'. Rungta has been on the radar of Indian intelligence for years, who due to lack of evidence have never been able to nab him.&nbsp;<br />

Enter the Intelligence officer Lipika Saikia Rao, who convinces Shaan to spy on Rungta, get into his inner circle, and collect evidence against him. An alibi is created and Shaan soon finds himself in the sprawling estate.<br />

Set in South Asia, the series ably incorporates the local political unrest into the narrative. So there is the mention of the Rohingyas, a mention of the Dhaka protest, and the political relations between India, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. While writers, Shridhar Raghavan (fresh from the success of Pathaan) and Modi get the political background well, they also excel at making <em>The Night Manager</em> a very human story. At the core is a man who agrees to become a spy for RAW, jeopardizing his whole life, to get redemption. Two years down the line, the death of the young girl still haunts him and it is for this reason that he agrees to do the unthinkable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roy Kapur plays his part well and with conviction. He looks like a man who could have been in the armed forces, he is a loner and minds his business until the fatal incident happens. And even though he gets anxious seeing Rungta, he treads on a dangerous path to get close to him, he remains a softy to his son&nbsp;Taha, who plays a key role in bringing him to Rungta's sprawling estate. Roy Kapur emotes with his eyes, certain shots have him depicting the mental havoc he is going through even though he appears calm and composed on the outside.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anil Kapoor a veteran, breezes through his part. He has played over-the-top characters in his recent screen outings and his portrayal of Rungta is dramatically different. He is cool, calculated and sharp. He only lets Shaan in after he saves his son in a staged (we know, Rungta doesn't) kidnapping incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The star of <em>The Night Manager</em>, however, is the supremely talented Tillotama Shome, who brings in her charisma to play the almost mundane but sharp RAW officer Lipika Saikia Rao. Shome, who proved her mettle in so many projects, shines once again in her role as the RAW handler who knows her appearance confuses people for whom she is. In the original, the character was played by Olvia Colman and Shome fits in her big shoes in the remake well making Lipika your regular government officer, who has so much more in her than what the state restricts her from doing.&nbsp;</p>

Sobhita Dhulipala, who is to date remembered for her strong performance in <em>Made In Heaven</em>&nbsp;feels underutilized. So far she has just added glamour to the mundane frames and hasn't been given much scope to show her talent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The other actor who shines is Saswata Chatterjee as BJ - Rungta's oldest aide and an openly gay man. It's always a delight to watch the actor, who has in his career played myriad characters and <em>The Night Manager</em> is no different. He brings in a fun element to his character even though loyal fans of the original series would know how his character plays a key role in the narrative.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The only problem with <em>The Night Manager </em>is that it breaks the story into two parts. With just four episodes out, of which three were just to establish the plot- the break feels abrupt. The second part of the series is set to be out in June 2023 which may not be a very good move considering the original is still available online and a lot of people are aware of the story.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If one considers <em>The Night Manager</em> as a stand-alone show, ignoring the fact that it's a remake, it is a credible show with good writing and great performances.&nbsp;</p>

The Night Manager review: Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur's show is good, OTT platform's strategy is not

<p><strong>The Night manager Web-series:&nbsp;</strong>Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur have large shoes to fill this Friday as they make their web series debut in Sandeep Modi's <em>The Night Manager. </em>An official Indian remake of the hit British series by the same name, the show is a spy thriller with Kapur playing a night manager of a five-star hotel who is given the task by the Indian intelligence to nab the world's most dreaded arms dealer played by Anil Kapoor.&nbsp;<br />

The original British series was released in 2016 and starred Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, and Elizabeth Debicki in lead roles. Based on author John le Carré's 1993 book, the series was aired on BBC One and earned critical acclaim. <em>The Night Manager </em>was nominated for thirty-six awards that year, of which it won eleven, including two Primetime Emmy Awards (for director Susanne Bier and music composer Victor Reyes) and three Golden Globe Awards (for Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Laurie).<br />

Considering the series was a huge hit back in the year of release, it has over the years enjoyed a huge fan base. Something that Indian filmmaker and director Sandeep Modi and producer Simon Corwell &nbsp;(the producer of the original series and the remake) know very well. In a candid chat with WION, the two makers discussed the pressure of making a remake of successful series, why it had to be adapted for the Indian audience, and if there is a possibility of season 2 of 'The Night Manager.</p>

<p><strong>Q: Congratulations on the show. Considering it's a remake of a hit series, comparisons are inevitable. Did that pose as a challenge?&nbsp;</strong><br />

<strong>Sandeep Modi:</strong> There are things in the original that I told my team was gold. Don't throw the gold, I said. The key part was to identify what's awesome and keep that. So it was critical and challenging to make it Indian and yet to stay true to the vision of John le Carré. The joy was whenever we would finish an episode and send a rough cut to Team Ink- the true custodian of le Carre's legacy, we were always sensitive to how Simon and the team would react and they have so far liked it. Very gracious with their love for it honestly.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<strong>Simon Corwell:</strong>&nbsp;Sandy has excelled. He did his best and it worked. From my perspective, Obviously, I&nbsp;loved the original but what I love about the Indian show is that we move in so many ways beyond the original. In the storytelling and direction, we are breaking new ground, if we look at Adi's performance or Anil's performance, they have found their own version of the characters and made it their own.&nbsp;<br />

Tilottama Shome is just fantastic. She made the part her own instantly. Gives it so much emotional strength.<br />

Sandeep and the team have given the show recognisable links to the original but it's so much more than that. From my perspective, it looks emotionally strong and exciting.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Q: How did the Indian remake come about?&nbsp;</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Simon Corwell:</strong> It came about, quite honestly, randomly. We started the conversation about the Indian remake of the series. At that time my dad (author John le Carré) was still alive. &nbsp;I went to him and told him that somebody has floated the idea to make an Indian adaptation. I was a little nervous, he wrote the book and it's not set in India. But his face lit up and he said 'How fabulous a thing that would be!'. His story was universal enough to be the jumping-off point for an entirely new way of re-telling it. So that was how the journey started. And then the challenge became how to tell the story in a way it feels completely Indian. But I must say that as writers Sandeep (Modi ) and Shridhar (Raghavan) have made such a great reality of that vision.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Sandeep Modi: &nbsp;</strong>Of course, we had to tweak it. We had interrogated&nbsp;every part of the book in that sense. I had to tell the team if it was only required to be told in Hindi we could have easily dubbed Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie's voices in Hindi. But that's not how a story works and the audience should be invested emotionally and culturally in the show.&nbsp;There are many aspects- dare I tell the lovers of the original- &nbsp;we have tinkered around with. We hope you like it. if not I am going underground for a week or two&nbsp;(l<em>aughs</em>)</p>

Sandeep: I was aided by a great team. Mukesh Chhabra my casting director was instrumental in this. He always comes up with whacked-out ideas for casting and I pick the best out of them and push him to deliver more. Tillotama was someone I was personally invested in. I will take the credit for casting her. I always felt that the strength of character that Olivia Coleman played in the original was different. Strength is a mental thing not physical. And to portray a strong intelligence officer did not require physical strength. Wanted to make a statement by casting a brilliant actor like Tillotama. &nbsp;That's why she was cast- who could make a vulnerable personal look strong and that's what our challenge was. Strength has so many shades and colours, so many types.&nbsp;<br />

Anil Sir is a mainstream superstar and Tilottama has made us proud with her work in world cinema the face-off between the two is something that I had dreamt of long back.&nbsp;<br />

This is an Indian show set in Asia with Indian talent. So when you say India, there are so many Indians and actors from all across the country. So there is Bengali actor Saswata Chatterjee, there is Rukshar, and there is Ravi Behl. We have actors from Kashmir. So much talent! Even with the crew- we got the best to tell an Indian story.&nbsp;</p>

<strong>Sandeep: </strong>I think it comes from emotions. Every story comes from emotion. I consider Mr Ram Madhvani my mentor. Both of us created 'Aarya' and we always felt good thrillers always make the audience sit on the edge of their seat but that only happens when they can connect with the characters. The only reason the viewer will connect to a thriller is when they care about the characters. Joy is the emotion.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Q: Simon, there has been so much conversation about making season 2 of the original series <em>The Night Manager</em>. Will it ever happen?</strong><br />

<strong>Simon:</strong>&nbsp; I would love to see season two of <em>The Night Manager</em>. Maybe the stars will align for it happens but you know it's been a long time now. It's a dream of mine for a long time but it will stay a dream perhaps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>British actor of Indian descent Dev Patel is turning director. His debut directorial is titled 'Monkey Man' and features 'Made In Heaven' stars Sobhita Dhulipala opposite Patel who plays the lead role in the film.&nbsp;<br />

Netflix has struck a deal in the region of USD30Mn for most worldwide rights to the film, Deadline reported a few days ago.<br />

Apart from Dev and Sobhita, the film will also feature Sharlto Copley and Sikandar Kher.&nbsp;<br />

Dev Patel directorial debut 'Monkey Man' to feature Sobhita Dhulipala

<p>Watching the rich go on with their lives in over dramatic scenarios in opulent sets that they call homes is something that we Indians are used to. For decades, Ekta Kapoor and the likes have been churning out TV shows that have large Indian business families dealing with problems in their opulent homes wearing outlandish costumes and makeup at all times of the day. So what makes Zoya Akhtar's latest web series for Amazon Prime -'Made In &nbsp;Heaven' stand out?</p>

<p>It ticks a few boxes that make for a hit TV show. It talks of the rich business families, the show has larger than life, luxurious sets and an ensemble cast. But the show, streaming now on Amazon Prime, goes beyond the glamour and the glitz and peeps right into the dysfunctionality that lies in the lives of the urban rich. Where on the surface everything looks picture perfect but when you look closely you realise that everyone is trying to hide a deep, dark secret and no one is purely black or white.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The show centers around friends and partners Karan (Arjun Mathur) and Tara Khanna (Sobhita Dhulipala) who run a wedding planning company called 'Made In Heaven'. &nbsp;Tara is a trophy wife-hailing from a lower-middle class family, she has earned love and respectability in the society thanks to her husband, Adil (Jim Sarbh) a young business tycoon. While Tara has got all the comforts in the world, her past makes her insecure about her present life and she is always on the edge because of it. Kabir, meanwhile, is a closet gay, who has his set of problems to deal with. And while they trudge around with their personal problems, ( which are in plenty), they together make their company flourish- organising high profile weddings and on the way dealing with extraordinary situations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The series has 9 episodes, each an hour long where Kabir and Tara meet new clients and in turn deal with unexpected situations. Written by Alankrita Srivastava and created by Akhtar and Reema Kagti- the episodes deal with very pertinent problems- from dowry to class divide to honour killing and homosexuality.</p>

<p>In fact, 'Made In Heaven' is perhaps the first show that talks about the LGBTQ community with so much ease. The lead character is gay who has so much going on in his life. He has to come out to his parents, he needs to answer the prying landlord and he has to bury his turbulent past. For a change, an Indian show doesn't show a gay man with stereotypical effeminate traits and tries to highlight the various complexities the gay community has to deal with even in urban areas where p[eople may claim to be open and liberal yet squirm talking about homosexuality.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since it's created by Zoya Akhtar, several prominent stars play pivotal cameos in the series. These actors, together with the lead cast that comprises of Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi along with Dhulipala and Mathur deliver compelling performances - making the show very engaging and real.&nbsp;</p>

So what makes Zoya Akhtar's latest web series for Amazon Prime -'Made In Heaven' stand out? It ticks a few boxes that make for a hit TV show. It talks of the rich business families, the show has larger than life, luxurious sets and an ensemble cast. But the show, streaming now on Amazon Prime, goes beyond the glamour and the glitz and peeps right into the dysfunctionality that lies in the lives of the urban rich. Where on the surface everything looks picture perfect but when you look closely you realise that everyone is trying to hide a deep, dark secret and no one is purely black or white. The show centers around friends and partners Karan (Arjun Mathur) and Tara Khanna (Sobhita Dhulipala) who run a wedding planning company called 'Made In Heaven'. Tara is a trophy wife-hailing from a lower-middle class family, she has earned love and respectability in the society thanks to her husband, Adil (Jim Sarbh) a young business tycoon. While Tara has got all the comforts in the world, her past makes her insecure about her present life and she is always on the edge because of it. Kabir, meanwhile, is a closet gay, who has his set of problems to deal with. And while they trudge around with their personal problems, ( which are in plenty), they together make their company flourish- organising high profile weddings and on the way dealing with extraordinary situations. The series has 9 episodes, each an hour long where Kabir and Tara meet new clients and in turn deal with unexpected situations. Written by Alankrita Srivastava and created by Akhtar and Reema Kagti- the episodes deal with very pertinent problems- from dowry to class divide to honour killing and homosexuality. In fact, 'Made In Heaven' is perhaps the first show that talks about the LGBTQ community with so much ease. The lead character is gay who has so much going on in his life. He has to come out to his parents, he needs to answer the prying landlord and he has to bury his turbulent past. For a change, an Indian show doesn't show a gay man with stereotypical effeminate traits and tries to highlight the various complexities the gay community has to deal with even in urban areas where p[eople may claim to be open and liberal yet squirm talking about homosexuality. Since it's created by Zoya Akhtar, several prominent stars play pivotal cameos in the series. These actors, together with the lead cast that comprises of Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi along with Dhulipala and Mathur deliver compelling performances - making the show very engaging and real.
