United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) estimates that only about 19 per cent of the North Korean population has access to mobile phones.

The ICBM launched on July 12 has been fired only once before, in April.

On Wednesday, the missile flew 1001 kilometres at a maximum altitude of 6,648 km before splashing into the East Sea, according to KCNA. The East Sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.

KCNA further said that the launch was a "grand explosion" that shook "the whole planet". Footage on the state media showed the missile blasting off into the sky.

Kim vowed that "a series of stronger military offensive" would be launched until the United States and South Korea change their policies towards North Korea, the agency added.&nbsp;

Citing the "unstable situation" on the Korean peninsula, Kim also called for "more intense efforts" to boost North Korea's nuclear arsenal.&nbsp;

The confirmation of the launch -- which the South Korean military had reported on Wednesday -- came with relations between the two Koreas at one of their lowest points ever.&nbsp;

Diplomacy has stalled. Kim Jong Un has called for ramping up weapons deployment. This includes tactical nukes.

A team at the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Astrogeology Science Centre generated a map of planet Mars using the treasure trove of data which was collected by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The newly-generated map of Mars will make viewing the Martian landscape more easier than before, allowing people to navigate through it even on their smartphones.&nbsp;

The new map, which has been compiled with the help of cloud computing and supercomputers, will be providing people with a high-resolution, three-dimensional experience of the otherworldly terrain of planet Mars.&nbsp;

<h2>Map contains 4,800 digital terrain models, 155,000 images</h2>

A team at the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Astrogeology Science Centre processed the map which consists of around 4,800 digital terrain models (DTMs) and has more than 155,000 images of the red Martian surface.

"Now anyone on the planet with a smartphone can search, use and marvel at these data," stated team leader Jay Laura, of the Astrogeology Science Centre (ASC), in a statement.

"These data are important because they democratise the availability of high-quality Mars topographic data," added Laura. "Getting consistent, well-aligned results is not easy. We felt it was important to generate and release these products so that others could freely access the data. When these data are highly accessible, anyone can contribute to scientific discovery," he stated.&nbsp;

The team has used the data on Martian topography collected by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's (MRO) Context Camera. The MRO Context Camera can capture images with a resolution of around six&nbsp;metres&nbsp;per pixel and can cover an area of around 18.5 miles (30 kilometres) wide and 100 miles (160 km) long.

The team then produced the DTMs by overlapping two images of a similar area, which were then processed using a supercomputer to create a detailed 3D view.&nbsp;

"The process is similar to how visual data collected by both our eyes is processed by the brain to generate our sense of depth perception and create a 3D picture of our surroundings," team members stated. &nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Maps of Mars free, accessible to general public</h2>

Speaking about the data used to create maps, Laura said, "These data are ripe for discovery and use by machines and humans. This data release means that the HiRISE data set can now be seamlessly leveraged by machine-learning scientists."

The message read “Keep Calm and Carry On, this is just a test” and was sent to every 4G and 5G-enabled smartphone in the country.&nbsp;

According to reports, the alert was sent at 2:59 pm local time, a minute earlier than previously publicised and lasted about 10 seconds. The authorities are hopeful that the new emergency service would get the public used to what the alerts look like so that they can be sent if the need arises during any future crisis.&nbsp;

“Keep Calm and Carry On” is a phrase that the British Ministry of Defence used during World War II. Its use to officially test the emergency alert system was also mentioned by newly crowned Deputy Prime Minister&nbsp;Oliver Dowden who referred to it as the 'British way'.&nbsp;

“Whilst today’s 10-second national test may be inconvenient for some, please forgive the intrusion because the next time you hear the alert, your life and the lifesaving actions of our emergency services could depend on it,” said Alex Woodman, Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire and Resilience Lead on the National Fire Chiefs Council.

<h2>How is the alert sent?</h2>

Explaining how the alerts work, the authorities stated the emergency messages are broadcast via mobile phone masts to all 4G and 5G phone networks. Meaning, the sender of the alert does not need your number. No location or other data will be collected for the purpose either.&nbsp;During the pandemic, the government sent alerts using SMS, directly to phone numbers.&nbsp;

Anyone in the range of the mast gets the alert and it can be fine-tuned based on geography. A Liverpool resident would not be sent the alert for an earthquake that poses danger, say in London.&nbsp;

Moreover, those not wanting to receive the alerts can simply opt out by going into the device settings or switching off their phones or keeping them in flight mode.&nbsp;

During the pandemic, the government sent alerts using SMS, directly to phone numbers. Anyone in the range of the mast gets the alert and it can be fine-tuned based on geography. A Liverpool resident would not be sent the alert for an earthquake that poses danger, say in London. Moreover, those not wanting to receive the alerts can simply opt out by going into the device settings or switching off their phones or keeping them in flight mode. Eighty-nine per cent of respondents, on the other hand, said that they spend less time engaging in relaxed conversation with their spouse than possible.

"Eighty-four per cent of respondents wish to spend more time with their spouse. People are accepting the problems and are willing to change. 88 per cent of respondents agreed that increased usage of smartphones is hurting their relationship with their spouses," the study said.&nbsp;

The study added that 90% of respondents would want to devote more leisure time to meaningful conversations with their spouses.&nbsp;

It revealed that 70% of people get irritated when their spouse asks for something while they are immersed in their phones.&nbsp;

''Sixty-six per cent of people feel that excessive usage of smartphones has weakened their relationship with their spouse," the study said.

It also found out that 69% of the respondents felt occasionally distracted by their smartphone, or not attentive enough to their spouse at times and 68% of partners felt guilty at some point in time for being distracted by their phone while spending time with their spouse.

Yogendra Sriramula, the Vivo India Head, Brand Strategy, said while the significance of smartphones in today's life is ''undisputed'', however, excessive usage remains an area that users need to be cautious of. "As a responsible brand, we aim to underline the importance of spending time with our loved ones, for that is the true meaning of leisure time," Sriramula said, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

Market research firm International Data Corporation said, just before the start of the annual festive season, smartphone market in India declined by 10% to hit a three-year low of 43mn shipment in the July-September 2022 period.
