<p>In the early signs of pushback against the postponement, around 200 protesters took to the streets waving Senegalese flags or wearing the jersey of the national football team early afternoon and blocked traffic on one of Dakar’s main streets. Some even burned tyres and threw rocks at the police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This prompted the riot police to fire tear gas into the crowd and detain protesters. At least two opposition presidential candidates were reportedly detained by security forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Senegal’s former prime minister Toure was arrested, opposition deputy Guy Marius Sagna told AFP. “I confirm that Aminata Toure has been arrested by the gendarmes,” said Sagna.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Toure was appointed prime minister by the Sall before joining the opposition. Meanwhile, in an online post, candidate Daouda Ndiaye said he was attacked by police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Sall’s announcement, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) expressed concern about the circumstances that led to the postponement of the elections and called for a new date to be set quickly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>France, on Sunday, also called on the Senegalese president to end the “uncertainty” created and called for a vote “as soon as possible”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lawmakers are investigating two Constitutional Council judges whose integrity in the election process has been questioned.</p>

<p>"I will begin an open national dialogue to bring together the conditions for a free, transparent and inclusive election," Sall added, without giving a new date.</p>

<p>Under the country's election code, at least 80 days must pass between the publication of the decree and the election, so the earliest it could now be held is late April.</p>

<p>Just hours after Sall's announcement, Abdou Latif Coulibaly, the Secretary General of the government who has acted as its spokesman, announced his resignation.</p>

<p>He was quitting because he wanted to have "full and complete freedom" to defend his political convictions, Coulibaly said in a statement.</p>

<p>This is the first time a Senegalese presidential election has been postponed and adds to the growing political tension in the country.</p>

<p>The US State Department urged Senegal to "swiftly" set a date for a "timely, free and fair election" in a post on X, formerly Twitter.</p>

<p>"We acknowledge allegations of irregularities, but we are deeply concerned about the disruption to the presidential electoral calendar," the department's Bureau of African Affairs posted.</p>

<p>A November 2023 decree signed by Sall had set the election for February 25, with 20 candidates in the running but two major opposition figures excluded.</p>

<p>Sall reiterated Saturday that he would not be a candidate.</p>

<p>But one opposition leader, Thierno Alassane Sall, denounced what he called "high treason towards the Republic" in a post on X, and called on "patriots and republicans" to oppose it.</p>

<p>El Malick Ndiaye, former spokesman of a disbanded opposition party once led by the now-jailed Ousmane Sonko, also denounced the decision.</p>

<p>"This is not a delay of the election, but a cancellation pure and simple," he wrote on Facebook.</p>

<p>Another opposition figure, former mayor of Dakar Khalifa Sall, called for pro-democratic forces to unite against the decision.</p>

<p>"All of Senegal must stand up," he told journalists. "All democratic political forces and civil society should unite so that this project does not succeed."</p>

<p>On X, Sall, who is not related to the president, denounced "a constitutional coup" by a leader who "dreams of eternity".</p>

<p>President Sall had designated Prime Minister Amadou Ba from his party as his would-be successor after announcing he would not run for a third term.</p>

<p>The Constitutional Council has excluded dozens of candidates from the vote, including Sonko, who has been jailed since July 2023, and Karim Wade, son of former president Abdoulaye Wade.</p>

<p>Wade's supporters in the National Assembly called for a parliamentary inquiry into the partiality of two judges on the Constitutional Court.</p>

<p>That motion was passed by the Assembly on January 31, with some members of Sall's party supporting it.</p>

<p>They followed that by sacking veteran French coach Jean-Louis Gasset and trying unsuccessfully to bring in former boss Herve Renard on a short-term deal.</p>

<p>But instead former player Emerse Fae was appointed on an interim basis, hoping to rouse a shell-shocked team for a daunting tie against the holders.</p>

<p>Mali received shipments of Russian military supplies in March and August 2022, and again in January 2023.</p>

<p>In March, the Malian army received several aircraft from Russia.</p>

<p>Sall has neither confirmed nor denied this.</p>

<p>The violence has been condemned by the United Nations, the African Union and West Africa's main regional bloc. France, the former colonial power in Africa, has urged restraint and dialogue.</p>

<p>Amnesty International has meanwhile called on the government to investigate Thursday's deaths and avoid using force disproportionately.</p>

<p>The verdict has since sparked protests, reported Reuters, as violence erupted at a central university campus where demonstrators set a car on fire and threw rocks at riot police, who retaliated with tear gas.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What was the opposition figure accused of?</strong></h2>

<p>The 48-year-old has&nbsp;been accused of raping a woman who worked in a massage parlour in 2021 and then issuing death threats. However, he repeatedly denied wrongdoing and called it a ploy to stop him from running in the presidential elections in 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The prosecution claimed that Sonko raped a then 20-year-old woman and sought a 10-year jail term for the opposition politician. The accuser detailing the alleged abuse in the court said she was raped five times.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, he did agree that he visited the “Sweet Beaute” salon in the capital city for a massage for chronic back pain but denied the alleged sexual assault. As per media reports, the doctor who consulted her on the evening of the alleged incident confirmed he found evidence of sexual intercourse.</p>

<h2><strong>What was the verdict?</strong></h2>

<p>The opposition politician&nbsp;has been sentenced to two years in prison for “corrupting youth” but was acquitted on the rape charges which the accusers’ lawyers said they will appeal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sonko would “probably spend the night in jail,” said a report by Al Jazeera, “The judge will ask for a mandate for security forces to bring him to jail.” However, Sonko has said that he is living under house arrest as there is a heavy security presence around his home, reported Al Jazeera.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The decision to arrest him or not depends on the public prosecutor,” said one of his lawyers, Djiby Diagne. “It is still an abuse towards a young girl,” said one of the lawyers representing the accuser, El Hadj Diouf, adding he was satisfied with the verdict, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the laws in Senegal, immoral behaviour towards individuals younger than 21&nbsp;amounts to corrupting youth, which is a criminal offence. Meanwhile, the salon’s owner, Ndeye Khady Ndiaye, who was accused of complicity in rape has been sentenced to two years in prison.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Protests and politics</strong></h2>

<p>Sonko,&nbsp;who is particularly popular among younger voters, boycotted the trial proceedings but was forced to return to the capital city of Dakar by the police over the weekend. The case has since sparked protests by Sonko’s supporters who have also called in charges against the opposition leader of the PASTEF-Patriots party, politically motivated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rodrigues told Reuters in March that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti would be an obvious choice for the vacant Brazil post if he was available at the end of the European season.</p>

<p>However, last week the Italian said he would honour the last year of his contract at the Bernabeu.</p>

<p>The Guardian report said that the cubs are part of a growing population in Niokolo-Koba, up from 10-15 individuals in 2011 before conservation efforts from Senegalese authorities and Panthera (global wild cat conservation organisation) began five years later. Scientists feared that Florence might have been poached after her GPS collar stopped functioning. They placed camera traps where the lioness was last seen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists discovered that Florence had been caring for the cubs in a densely forested part of the national park.</p>

<p>Alongside the new cubs, scientists also spotted another lioness that had been injured by porcupine quills and faced death. The quills were removed, and footage showed she was healthy, giving hope of a further expansion of the population, the report added.&nbsp;</p>

West African lions can be saved from extinction. Here's how

<p>As many as&nbsp;38&nbsp;people died and 87 were injured in one of the deadliest road accidents&nbsp;when two buses collided near Kaffrine in central Senegal on Sunday (January&nbsp;8), a&nbsp;fire brigade official in Senegal told the news agency AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Colonel Cheikh Fall, who is in charge of operations for Senegal's National Fire Brigade, said, "It was a serious accident. There were 125 passengers in both the buses, of whom 38 have died."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The official also told the news agency that the tragic accident took place on the No. 1 national road at 3.15am local time (0315 GMT) Sunday morning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that all the victims were evacuated and rushed to a Kaffrine hospital and medical centre after the accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He mentioned that the wreckage and demolished buses have since been cleared and normal traffic has resumed on the stretch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Senegal President Macky Sall&nbsp;has declared a national mourning of three days, starting Monday (January 9). The head of the state on his Twitter account wrote: "Following today's serious accident in Gniby, I have decided on a three-day national mourning from January 9."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"An interministerial council will be held on the same date to take firm measures on road safety and public passenger transport," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am deeply saddened by this tragic road accident and I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Sall further added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Road accidents are common in Senegal, and take place mostly because of driving without discipline, poor roads and decrepit vehicles, say experts, adding that this, however, is one of the heaviest death tolls from a single incident in recent years.<br />

<p>While the prosecutors had sought a two-year sentence Niang and Samb were only given six-month sentences. Apart from the jail sentences the two legislators have also been handed 100,000 CFA francs ($160) and have been ordered to jointly pay five mn francs (approx $8,100) in damages.</p>

<p>Prosecutor Baboucar Cisse reported that his client was pregnant at the time of the scuffle. Following the incident where she was kicked in her belly, Ndiaye fainted and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.&nbsp;</p>
