Hundreds of workers at the Samsung India factory at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai city in Southern India, have been protesting for the second day, alleging that their management has refused to recognize their Left-affiliated Workers Union.

The Samsung India facility at the industrial hub of Sriperumbudur is known to assemble televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners, with thousands of units being rolled out every day. Owing to the ongoing protest, production is said to have been impacted.

According to Muthukumar, the Kanchipuram District Secretary of the CITU, a Left-affiliated Trade Union, the protests began on Monday, 9th September, after the Samsung India management allegedly failed to recognize the Left-affiliated Samsung India Workers Union.

"At Samsung India, the welfare of our employees is our top priority. We actively engage with our workers to address any grievances they may have and comply with all laws and regulations. We will also ensure that there is no disruption to our consumers," said a Samsung India spokesperson.

"A significant portion of the workers at the Samsung facility are affiliated to our Trade Union. Despite that, the management has not recognized it. Samsung management has been employing strong-arm tactics, and threats of termination to those affiliated to the Union. They have even propped up a rival Union to create factionalism among workers," Muthukumar shared his allegations to WION.

Muthukumar, who is a Left-affiliated Trade Union leader representing the Samsung workers, but is not a Samsung employee, alleged that the Samsung management had been forcing Union-linked workers from one production line to another unrelated production line. "When a worker is trained only to assemble ACs, and he is made to assemble Washing machines, there will naturally be errors in his work and it would ruin the product. This is a convenient opportunity for the management to lay off the Unionizing workers," Muthukumar claimed.

The protests at a leading consumer electronics assembly facility are occurring at a time when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and his industries team are in the US to attract investments to the state.

Over the last ten days, the chief minister has been announcing that MoUs worth millions of dollars have been signed with prospective investors from across sectors, including electronics and electronics component manufacturing. The DMK-led Tamil Nadu Government has maintained that it is working towards tripling its state economy to $1 trillion by 2023.

Samsung India workers protest for second day, disrupt production

In a strategic move to bolster electric vehicle (EV) production in the United States, South Korea’s Samsung SDI and General Motors (GM) have finalised plans to jointly invest $3.5 billion in a new EV battery manufacturing facility in Indiana. This development marks a significant step in both companies' efforts to strengthen their positions in the rapidly expanding EV market.

Joint Venture to Boost U.S. EV Battery Production

The partnership between Samsung SDI and GM was initially announced in April 2023, but details have now been finalised with a commitment to build a state-of-the-art battery cell manufacturing plant. The facility, located in Indiana, will begin with an annual production capacity of 27 gigawatt hours (GWh), with the potential to expand up to 36 GWh under future expansion plans.

Samsung SDI confirmed that the plant is slated to commence mass production by 2027, aligning with GM's broader strategy to increase its electric vehicle output. The joint venture is expected to play a crucial role in GM's goal of ramping up EV production, particularly as the automotive giant has faced challenges in meeting its ambitious EV production targets.

Why This Matters: A Strategic Investment Amid Shifting Market Dynamics

The decision to establish this new facility in Indiana underscores the growing importance of securing a domestic supply chain for EV batteries in the United States. As the U.S. government pushes for greater EV adoption and reduced dependence on foreign battery supplies, partnerships like this are essential for meeting both market demand and regulatory requirements.

For Samsung SDI, this joint venture represents an opportunity to solidify its presence in the U.S. market and expand its production capacity. The company’s shares saw a 3.2% rise following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the long-term benefits of this collaboration.

On the other hand, GM's involvement in the venture is a strategic move to diversify its battery technology portfolio. By incorporating prismatic cells, which are known for their compact design and high energy density, GM aims to enhance the performance and cost-efficiency of its future EV models.

Technical and Production Details

The Indiana facility will focus on producing prismatic cells, which differ from the more commonly used cylindrical cells. Prismatic cells offer advantages in terms of space efficiency and energy density, making them ideal for next-generation EVs that require compact and powerful battery solutions.

Kurt Kelty, GM's Vice President of Battery Cell and Pack, emphasised the importance of this new facility in advancing GM’s battery technology. He noted that the plant’s capability to expand up to 36 GWh will be pivotal in lowering costs and increasing performance, key factors in making EVs more accessible to a broader market.

Last year, GM hinted that the Indiana plant would produce both nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells, though the focus now appears to be primarily on prismatic cells. This shift likely reflects GM’s strategic decision to optimise battery performance while managing production costs.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the positive outlook, GM has recently adjusted its EV production forecasts, citing slower-than-expected demand. In June, the company lowered its 2024 EV production target to 250,000 units, down from a previous estimate of 300,000 units. This reduction highlights the challenges automakers face as they transition from traditional gasoline-powered vehicles to electric models.

However, the long-term potential of the EV market remains strong, driven by increasing environmental regulations and consumer demand for sustainable transportation. The joint venture between Samsung SDI and GM is poised to contribute significantly to this market shift, ensuring that both companies are well-positioned to meet future demand.

A Strategic Step Towards Electrification

The establishment of the new EV battery plant in Indiana marks a significant milestone in the ongoing transition towards electric vehicles. For Samsung SDI and GM, this partnership is not just about expanding production capacity; it’s a strategic investment in the future of mobility. As the EV market continues to evolve, the collaboration between these industry giants will likely play a key role in shaping the next generation of electric vehicles, with a focus on innovation, performance, and sustainability.

Samsung SDI and GM partner on USD 3.5 bn U.S. battery plant in Indiana

The National Samsung Electronics Union in South Korea called for an indefinite strike on Wednesday to intensify its campaign against the company for better wages and benefits. Using estimates by the union's vice president, Lee Hyun-kuk, around 6,500 workers joined the strike that began on Monday, while the company has maintained that the first three days of striking did not cause any disturbance. However, the union is adamant about disturbance to the production on some of the chip lines such as with equipment running more slowly.

"Samsung Electronics will ensure no disruptions occur in the production lines. The company remains committed to engaging in good faith negotiations with the union," the company said in a statement.

The union, which represents about 30,000 members—nearly a quarter of Samsung's South Korea workforce—will extend a strike originally planned for three days until Wednesday after management failed to give any sign it would negotiate with them.

"We haven't spoken to management since we started the strike on Monday," said Lee.

The union wants to be treated as a partner on equal terms with management in a bid to push further an already beleaguered world's biggest memory chipmaker fighting razor-thin competition in AI chips.

However, the union officials have also denied reports about the low turnout, arguing that the union, which is only five years old, did not have adequate time to train its members on labour matters. Some training took place on Tuesday, and another one is scheduled for Wednesday to educate the members.

The NSEU has revised its demands and is holding out for a 3.5 per cent basic salary increase and a day off to celebrate the founding of the union, having earlier dropped the extra day's annual leave. Management earlier offered to raise the salary increase by 3 per cent, but the union disagrees that 3.5 per cent is needed to accurately reflect the real figure for inflation.

Analysts said it would be difficult to gauge the extent of damage to production from the strike without further clarity from the union related to wafers and processes.

Shares of Samsung shed 0.3 per cent in early trade, while the benchmark KOSPI index was little changed.

Galaxy Ring to Galaxy Z Fold 6: Samsung launches seven new gadgets

Samsung Electronics has announced a 1,400 percent increase in its operating profit forecast for the second quarter of 2024, propelled by soaring demand for AI-related memory chips. This comes as workers union in South Korea plan a 3-day strike demanding better pay.

Samsung forecasts 1400% profit surge

Samsung Electronics workers in South Korea began a three-day strike on Monday, calling for improvements in pay and working conditions.

The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), which represents some 30,000, or close to 25%, of the company's employees in South Korea, said.

This is the second time within the year that the union comes to the streets.

The previous month, it coordinated an annual leave in staging a mass walkout, yet the Samsung remains adamant that this had no effect on the business.

There is also small possibility for this three-day strike to create large-scale disruption in production as low participation and automation have this as a plausible outcome.

"Some 6,540 workers will be on strike during the week, though those controlling automated parts of production lines could prevent serious disruptions," the union said.

On the other hand, Union President Son Woo-Mok explained that the involvement rate was still quite good, noting that the union was young and had to educate its members on their rights.

Lee Hyun-Kuk, the vice president of the union, also warned that they were prepared to actually escalate the strikes unless they get what they want from Samsung.

One of the key demands is related to the revision of the bonus system.

According to union officials, the bonuses of blue-collar workers have been calculated differently from the company executives. T

hey argue that this is what they are fighting for in the new bonus system.

One young engineer, a new hire this year, said he knew only too well what it was like to be on the losing end of the "opaque" bonus system.

Since Samsung pledged, in 2020, not to discourage organized labour, membership in NSEU has grown.

The demand by the union comes at a very fateful moment when Samsung seems to be losing ground in the market for chips used in artificial intelligence.

The stock performance of Samsung has been defeated by its rival SK Hynix, which according to the union, is partly due to its slow development in high bandwidth memory chips that are imperative in AI processors.

But Samsung predicted a hefty jump in its second-quarter operating profit, struck by the rebound in its chip prices amid an AI boom. Its shares were marginally higher Monday but earlier hit their best level since January 2021.

Samsung workers strike for better pay, benefits as chipmaker navigates AI challenges

Tech Giant Samsung is poised for a significant financial boost Aly predict a 13-fold increase in operating profit for the second quarter driven by strong demand for AI technology take a look.

AI Chip demand fuels Samsung profit surge

Samsung Electronics reported a sharp rise in its second-quarter operating profit Friday, attributing this to the recovery of semiconductor prices buoyed by the boom in the field of artificial intelligence. The company estimated that its operating profit for the quarter ended June 30 sharply rose over 15 times, reaching 10.4 trillion won ($7.54 billion) vis-a-vis 670 billion won last year.

That outperformed the 8.8 trillion won consensus estimate from LSEG SmartEstimate, which is a weighted average of the most reliable analysts' projections. It was the most profitable quarter for the company since the third quarter of 2022.

The revenue probably surged about 23 per cent year-on-year to 74 trillion won during the quarter, Samsung said.

The semiconductor business, its crown jewel and the biggest contributor to its overall performance, likely posted a second consecutive quarterly profit. That would be an improvement from the first quarter, as analysts expect memory chip prices to continue their rebound from a slump extended from mid-2022 to the last half of 2023, hit by soft post-pandemic demand for gadgets using these chips.

Analysts also pointed out that increased demand for high-end DRAM chips, especially for high-bandwidth memory (HCM) chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) chipsets, and chips used in data centre servers and AI-powered gadgets, has been causing the rise in prices for the chips.

For instance, DRAM chip prices in the second quarter have risen 13-18 per cent compared with the previous quarter, according to TrendForce. Meanwhile, NAND Flash chips, used for data storage functions, saw price increases of 15-20 per cent in the second quarter.

This is, of course, driven by demand for artificial intelligence technologies that are greatly in demand and positions Samsung well within the global market for semiconductors.

Samsung's profits skyrocket as chip price rises on strong AI demand

Samsung introduces one-stop shop for AI chips

Samsung Electronics stated on Wednesday that its contract manufacturing division wants to revolutionise AI chip manufacturing by providing a one-stop shop for customers. This strategy combines Samsung's global leading memory chip, foundry, and chip packaging services to fulfil the growing need for AI technologies.

Accelerated production timeline

By allowing clients to communicate through a single channel that coordinates Samsung's memory chip, foundry, and chip packaging teams, Samsung has cut the time necessary to develop AI chips by around 20 per cent. Typically, AI chip manufacture takes several weeks. "We are truly living in the age of AI - the emergence of generative AI is completely changing the technology landscape," said Siyoung Choi, President and General Manager of Foundry Business, at an event in San Jose, California.

Market growth and industry projections

Samsung expects worldwide semiconductor industry sales to reach $778 billion by 2028, driven primarily by AI chips. Marco Chisari, Executive Vice President of Foundry Sales, and Marketing, shared similar optimism and supported OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's estimates of growing AI chip demand. Altman has reportedly expressed a desire to develop over three dozen new chip plants, highlighting the sector's tremendous expansion.

Strategic advantage and technological innovations

Despite previous customer reservations about Samsung's dual status as a competitor and service provider, the company's integrated strategy is now viewed as a competitive advantage in the age of artificial intelligence. Samsung's comprehensive service package enables high integration of all chip elements, which is critical for efficiently processing huge datasets with low power consumption.

Samsung also demonstrated its advanced gate-all-around (GAA) transistor architecture, which improves chip performance and efficiency. The South Korean corporation, an early adopter of GAA technology, intends to commence mass manufacturing of second-generation 3-nanometer circuits employing GAA in the latter part of this year. Samsung also introduced its latest 2-nanometer chipmaking technology, which enhances power delivery by inserting power rails on the backside of the wafer and is set for mass production in 2027.

Competitive landscape

The Biden administration has decided to award the South Korean tech giant Samsung $6.6 billion subsidy to strengthen domestic semiconductor production.

The funds are designated to expand Samsung's chip output in Taylor, Texas, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter revealed.

The announcement will be made by Commerce Department Secretary Gina Raimondo, next week.

This subsidy is intended to support the construction of four facilities in Taylor.

These include a $17 billion chipmaking plant announced by Samsung in 2021, an additional factory, an advanced packaging facility, and a research and development centre.

Notably, Samsung's investment in the US will more than double, soaring to over $44 billion as part of this deal.

This recent grant positions Samsung's subsidy as the third-largest within the program, trailing behind Taiwan's TSMC.

TSMC was recently awarded $6.6 billion and had made plans to expand its investment to $65 billion by 2030, including the addition of a third factory in Arizona.

The Biden administration's subsidy for Samsung comes as part of a broader initiative to enhance domestic chip production.

This move aims to attract capital that might otherwise have been invested in manufacturing plants in China and neighbouring regions.

In 2022, Congress sanctioned the Chips and Science Act, allocating $52.7 billion for research and manufacturing subsidies.

Additionally, lawmakers approved $75 billion in government loan authority.

However, Samsung has indicated it will not be availing any loans for this expansion.

The Chips and Science Act indicates a major shift to reduce US dependence on China and Taiwan in semiconductor manufacturing.

Recent data from the Semiconductor Industry Association reveals a decline in the US's share of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity from 37 per cent in 1990 to just 12 per cent in 2020.

While TSMC and Intel have chosen to expand their production capabilities in Arizona, a crucial swing state, Samsung's expansion in Texas—a traditionally Republican stronghold—is perceived as potentially less advantageous for President Biden's electoral prospects.

Despite this, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has been invited to attend the subsidy announcement event, although President Biden will not be present.

(With inputs from Reuters)

Samsung Electronics anticipates a remarkable surge in its first-quarter operating profit.

According to Reuters, the company’s profit is expected to increase more than tenfold, surpassing market predictions.

This surge is primarily attributed to the recovery in chip prices, pushed by an increase in demand for artificial intelligence (AI).

Although the forecast was promising, Samsung's stock faced a decline.

Early Friday, the company's shares dropped by 1.3 per cent, coming along with a 1.1 per cent decrease in South Korea's broader market.

Investors seem to be anxious for updates on Samsung's high-end memory chip business, which has been trailing behind its competitors.

Samsung estimated its operating profit to be around 6.6 trillion won ($4.89 billion) for the quarter ending on March 31.

This figure surpassed the 5.7 trillion won predicted by LSEG SmartEstimate.

Compared to the same period last year, this marks an increase of 931 per cent.

This expected profit could be Samsung's highest since the third quarter of 2022.

However, it wasn't all positive news for Samsung. Although the operating profit exceeded expectations, the company's revenue fell short.

The revenue is projected to rise by 11 per cent year-on-year, reaching 71 trillion won. This figure is slightly below the 72.3 trillion won predicted by LSEG SmartEstimate.

Park Sung-soon, an analyst at Korea Investor Relations Service, commented on the company's performance.

“Since revenue was mostly in line but operating profit beat expectations, the inventory valuation of NAND flash chips may have improved," Reuters quoted him as saying.

Sung-soon also highlighted the positive reception of the new Galaxy S24 smartphones.

He suggested that the on-device AI and high-margin premium smartphones could impact the company's performance positively.

Samsung's chip division, historically its largest revenue generator, is on track to report its first quarterly profit in five quarters. This turnaround is due to the rebound in memory chip prices.

The price of DRAM chips rose by about 20 per cent in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile, NAND flash chip prices surged between 23 per cent to 28 per cent.

Analysts remain optimistic about Samsung's future in the chip market. Despite lagging behind its competitor SK Hynix in the booming HBM market, Samsung is expected to catch up.

The company plans to launch its latest and most powerful HBM chips in the third quarter.

The recent 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Taiwan is likely to impact semiconductor supply. Analysts believe that both Samsung and SK Hynix might raise memory chip prices more than initially planned. This move could potentially strengthen their second-quarter earnings.

In the mobile business segment, Samsung is expected to report a solid profit. This expectation follows the launch of its flagship Galaxy S24 smartphones in late January.

According to Reuters, Eugene Investment & Securities estimates that Samsung shipped 57 million smartphones during the quarter, an 8 per cent increase from the previous quarter.

The average selling price of Samsung smartphones also rose by 30 per cent to $340 quarter-on-quarter.

Counterpoint data provider reported that global sales of Galaxy S24 smartphones increased by 8 per cent compared to the previous Galaxy S23 series during the first three weeks of availability.

Samsung is set to release detailed earnings on April 30.

Samsung's top executive, Lee Jae-yong, popularly known as Jay Y. Lee, was acquitted by a South Korean court on Monday, with charges of stock price manipulation and accounting fraud.

According to a New York Times report, the court's decision adds a new twist to the billionaire's legal saga linked to a merger that solidified his control over Samsung, the nation's largest conglomerate.

Prosecutors had sought a five-year prison sentence and a fine of 500 million won, but Lee, who denies any wrongdoing, emerged victorious.

Samsung Electronics, the group's electronics arm, represents about one-sixth of South Korea's exports, underscoring the significance of Lee's role.

Lee's legal troubles began in the wake of massive protests in Seoul leading to the 2016 impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye, who faced charges related to bribes from Samsung and other chaebols.

Lee was arrested in 2017, accused of bribing President Park and her confidante to gain government support for a 2015 merger.

The merger was seen as a crucial step in Lee's bid to transfer control of Samsung from his father, Lee Kun-hee.

A New York-based hedge fund, Elliott Management, opposed the merger, but the National Pension Service, a major shareholder, voted in favour, allegedly due to Lee's bribes. The legal journey involved multiple sentences, retrials, and a complex web of charges.

In 2017, a Seoul district court sentenced Lee to five years in prison for offering bribes.

However, the sentence was reduced, and he was released in 2018. The Supreme Court ordered a retrial in 2019.

During this period, Lee faced another indictment related to stock price manipulation and accounting fraud in the 2015 merger.

However, a court had refused to issue an arrest warrant, preventing prosecutors from detaining him.

Business analysts differed on the impact of Lee's time in prison on Samsung, with the company maintaining its position as the world's most profitable technology company during his incarceration.

While Lee was granted parole in 2021, along with 800 other prisoners, on a national holiday, the legal challenges continued.

The retrial on bribery charges in 2021 resulted in a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence. His release came with a five-year ban on employment at Samsung.

However, in 2022, President Yoon Suk Yeol granted him a pardon, lifting the employment ban.

Two months later, Samsung Electronics appointed Lee as executive chairman, marking a swift return to a prominent role.

Apple overtakes Samsung as world's biggest seller of smartphones

For the first time in more than a decade, Apple Inc. dethroned Samsung Electronics to become the best-selling smartphone company last year, according to a report by Bloomberg citing data from a research firm IDC. This comes as the iPhone accounted for a fifth of the global market with over 200 million shipments in 2023.

About the report

South Korea’s largest company, Samsung, witnessed a slump in shipments last year and stood at 226.6 million, according to IDC estimates. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone accounting for a fifth of the global market witnessed 235 million shipments in 2023 topping the list among smartphone makers.

China’s Xiaomi Corp followed Samsung in the third spot. “While we saw some strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said IDC’s Director Nabila Popal, as quoted by Bloomberg.

“All this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China, its largest market. Apple’s ongoing success and resilience is in large part due to the increasing trend of premium devices, which now represent over 20% of the market,” Popal added.

How did Apple manage to do this?

Apple has reportedly been dominating the holiday season for some years now but its surge ahead of Samsung over a full year is unprecedented and suggests that the United States-based company is handling the industry-wide slump better than its rivals.

Apple has also benefited from aggressive offers which have enticed users to shift towards a premium device and even managed to make it through a lukewarm welcome late last year for the iPhone 15 in China – one of its biggest international markets.

This comes amid a rise in the popularity of devices by Huawei Technologies Co. in China. The report also noted that while Apple was the only company in the top three to witness growth, the United States-based phone maker is not immune to the wider decline.

Apple’s bleak future in China?

iPhone sales in China dropped by 30 per cent in the first week of 2024, Jefferies analysts said in a note, as per Reuters. This drop has also been attributed to Huawei’s growing popularity.

However, the note published on Sunday (Jan 7) also said that a decline in Apple’s sales was the primary catalyst for an overall double-digit drop in China smartphone shipments for the first week this year.

While the Bloomberg report noted that the iPhone sales were driven by aggressive discounting, the note by Jefferies analysts said that this decline was despite the reduction in prices.

The 30 per cent drop represents an acceleration from the three per cent year-over-year decline Apple witnessed throughout the year in 2023 in its third-largest market, Jefferies said.

We have got our hands on both devices. Having spent some time with the new Samsung phones, here’s what we think about them.

Galaxy Z Flip 5: Hands-on with the new Flip phone

The new Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a form factor similar to its predecessor, but it is the cover display on the phone that makes it different from the previous-generation model. The cover display, also called the Flex Window, is 3.78 times larger than the previous version. It measures 3.4 inches. Interestingly, the bigger cover display offers a wide range of new capabilities. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 allows users to do almost everything from the cover screen that they can do from the primary screen. Now, on the Flex Window, users can get access to a plethora of widgets, quick settings, and other interesting features.

We like the camera functionality of the phone. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has the most powerful camera on a Flip phone. We have tested its cameras, although briefly, and the initial results are promising.

Also, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with new AI improvements in the camera. The AI-powered image signal processing algorithm is said to correct any visual noise that typically spoils low-light images while enhancing details and colour tone.

We, however, can talk about the full potential of its cameras after we put them to use in different conditions and environments.

Not to our surprise, the phone is light in weight. So, one can easily operate it for long hours.

Its 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED display is a treat to the eyes.

The new Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be available in four colours - Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender – at a price of $999.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Hands-on with the new Fold phone

Much like the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung has made some significant improvements in the Fold 5 as well.

Interestingly, the Fold 5 is 10 grams lighter than its predecessor. While the difference in weight may look negligible, it does add to the comfort and ease of handling the phone. As Samsung claims, the Fold 5 is also the thinnest Foldable phone yet.

Like earlier versions, the large main screen of the Fold 5 provides an expansive viewing experience.

Also, the new Fold packs a brighter screen. In the new version of the Galaxy Fold, the peak brightness has increased by more than 30%, which makes the screen appropriate for an optimal viewing experience outdoors even under bright sunlight. The screen is vibrant and produces crisp details.

One of the major additions to the Fold is the ability to have faster access to recent apps. The improved taskbar enables dynamic productivity by allowing users to quickly switch between frequently-used apps.

Gamers would be excited to know that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is claimed to comfortably handle marathon gaming sessions with its advanced cooling system. We can comment on it after testing it for a longer period.
