An Iranian foundation has lauded the man who attacked writer Salman Rushdie last year, seriously injuring him, and announced that it will reward him with 1,000 square metres of agricultural land, according to state TV on Tuesday through its Telegram channel.&nbsp;After being attacked by a Shi'ite Muslim American from New Jersey, 24, on the stage of a literary event&nbsp;in western New York in August near Lake Erie, Rushdie, 75, lost an eye and the use of one hand, as reported by AFP.&nbsp;

"We sincerely thank the brave action of the young American who made Muslims happy by blinding one of Rushdie's eyes and disabling one of his hands," said Mohammad Esmail Zarei, secretary of the Foundation to Implement Imam Khomeini's Fatwas.

"Rushdie is now no more than living dead and to honour this brave action, about 1,000 square metres of agricultural land will be donated to the person or any of his legal representatives," Zarei added.

The attack occurred 33 years to the day after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran at the time, called on Muslims to assassinate Rushdie a few months after the publication of "The Satanic Verses" in a religious decree known as a fatwa. For some Muslims, the novel's references to the Prophet Muhammad were blasphemous.

As per Reuters, a&nbsp;grand jury has indicted Matar on two counts: attempted second-degree murder, which carries a potential sentence of 25 years in jail, and another of second-degree assault.

Rushdie sustained multiple stabbing wounds on his neck and abdomen.

According to Rushdie's representative, the attack left him with serious wounds, including nerve damage to his arm, liver injuries, and the potential loss of an eye.

Matar was tried at the Chautauqua County Courthouse on these charges and has been in detention&nbsp;since his capture.

Khomeini called on Muslims around the world to&nbsp;execute Rushdie because of a number of passages and statements he made about the Prophet Muhammad that some have deemed heretical and blasphemous.

In an interview with the New York Post that was published on Wednesday that Matar said that he respected Khomeini, but refused to confirm whether or not the fatwa was the source of his inspiration. He claimed to have "read a couple of pages" of "The Satanic Verses" and to have seen the author's YouTube videos.

Matar, as quoted by&nbsp;the Post, remarked about Rushdie, "I don't like him very much."&nbsp;

"He's someone who attacked Islam, he attacked their beliefs, the belief systems."

Salman Rushdie's attacker pleads 'not guilty' to second degree murder and assault charges

Noted Indian-born novelist Salman Rushdie, who suffered grievous injuries after being stabbed repeatedly in New York last week, is out of ventilator and his “road to recovery has begun” but “will be long”, his agent said on Monday.

“He's off the ventilator, so the road to recovery has begun…It will be long; the injuries are severe, but his condition is headed in the right direction,” his agent, Andrew Wylie, told Reuters in an email.

His son Zafar in a separate statement said that Rushdie remains in critical condition, but he has been removed from a ventilator, which “allowed him to talk and demonstrate that his usual feisty and defiant sense of humour remains intact”.

On Friday, when Rushdie stepped onto the podium to give a lecture literary festival in upstate New York, he was attacked with a knife. The accused was later identified as Hadi Matar, 24, from New Jersey.

A bounty worth millions of dollars was placed by the Islamic extremists on Rushdie who found his book ‘Satanic Verses’ to be blasphemous. That bounty was placed after a fatwa was issued 33 years ago by then Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. His successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in 2019 said that the decree remained "irrevocable."

Salman Rushdie taken off ventilator support, is ‘talking and joking’

United States President Joe Biden has condemned the “vicious attack” on noted author Salman Rushdie who was attacked with a knife on a New York lecture stage.

Hailing the Indian-born author as standing “for essential, universal ideals”, Biden expressed his solidarity with Rushdie and “all those who stand for freedom of expression”.

“Jill and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the vicious attack on Salman Rushdie yesterday in New York,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House.&nbsp;

“We, together with all Americans and people around the world, are praying for his health and recovery. I am grateful to the first responders and the brave individuals who jumped into action to render aid to Rushdie and subdue the attacker.”

Rushdie, whose book ‘Satanic Verses’ drew wide condemnation from Muslim countries, had been in the underground after a fatwa was issued by Iran’s late leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued in 1989, calling for his death.

After living under police protection, Rushdie had been living openly in New York.

On Friday, the Man Booker Prize award winner was attacked by a New Jersey resident, 24-year-old Hadi Matar. He is currently hospitalised with a damaged liver, severed nerves in his arm and at the risk of losing an eye. He has since been taken off the ventilator.

Matar has been charged with attempted murder as well as assault on a man who was sharing the stage with Rushdie. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

Though it is unclear why Matar wanted Rushdie dead, the New York district attorney during a preliminary court hearing on Saturday&nbsp;attributed fatwa to be the main reason for the frenzied attack.

According to The Guardian, Matar’s social media activity reportedly reflected an admiration of Iran’s government as well as Islamic extremism.

Though by 2005, the Iranian government distanced itself from the fatwa, Rushdie was still under the radar of religious extremists who reportedly have placed a bounty which in recent years increased to more than $3m.

Meanwhile, reports claimed Matar's family belongs to Lebanon. Ali Tehfe, mayor of Yaroun in Lebanon was quoted by agencies as saying that Matar was the son of a man from the town. Matar's parents had reportedly emigrated to the US and he was born in the United States.

Salman Rushdie's attacker appears in court, pleads not guilty

Rishi Sunak, one of the candidates for the UK PM race has said that the recent attack on author Salman Rushdie is a ‘wake-up call for the West’ over Iran, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

Following the stabbing of Rushdie, the former chancellor said that the UK should declare Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a ‘terrorist organisation'.

Rushdie, an Indian-born author, was stabbed in the neck and torso while on stage for giving a lecture in New York state. The author had spent years in hiding after Iran urged Muslims to kill him over his book "The Satanic Verses."

Sunak stated, referring to the nuclear deal between the West and Iran, "We urgently need a new, strengthened deal and much tougher sanctions, and if we can’t get results, then we have to start asking whether the JCPOA is at a dead end," the Sunday Telegraph reported. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is a 2015 agreement that allowed Iran to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from US, European Union, and UN sanctions.

Rishi said, "The situation in Iran is extremely serious and in standing up to [Vladimir] Putin we can’t take our eye off the ball elsewhere," The Sunday Telegraph reported.

The UK is currently making efforts with the US and European Union to revive the agreement.

In 2018, the former president, Donald Trump, withdrew the US from the agreement, which Biden, the current president, is working to revive. Joe Biden claims it to be a way of stopping Iran from developing nuclear bombs.
