As fears of a potential conflict with Russia grow, Sweden is distributing leaflets among its citizens with clear instructions on preparing for war and stocking up on essentials like food and water. Neighbouring Finland has also launched a new website focused on preparedness, while Norway also distributed similar pamphlets advising citizens on how to survive independently for a week in case of war or other emergencies. 'The security situation is serious' Both Sweden and Finland, known for their long-standing neutrality, shifted their policies and joined NATO after the Ukraine war began. “The security situation is serious, and we all need to strengthen our resilience to face various crises and ultimately war,” said Mikael Frisell, director of Sweden’s Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), which is overseeing the distribution of the leaflets. This development follows a decision by the Biden government to allow Ukraine to use US-supplied long-range missiles to strike within Russian territory. In response to the announcement, Donald Trump Jr., the son of the President-elect, wrote on social media, “The military industrial complex seems to want to make sure they get World War 3 going before my father has a chance to create peace and save lives.” Also read: Russia says Biden 'risking start of World War III' with missile permission 'If Crisis or War Comes' Since the Russia-Ukraine war began, Swedish officials have urged citizens to prepare both mentally and practically for the possibility of war. The newly updated booklet, titled 'If Crisis or War Comes,' provides instructions on handling various emergencies, including military conflicts, natural disasters, cyberattacks, and terrorism. This booklet has been issued only five times since World War II, with the last version distributed in 2018. “The global security situation increases the risks that nuclear weapons could be used. In the event of an attack with nuclear, biological or chemical weapons, take cover in the same way as in an air attack,” the booklet states, according to Daily Mail. Also read: 'Dangerous and unacceptable,' UK, EU hit Tehran with tough sanctions The updated version also includes a strong message of resilience: “We will never give up if Sweden is attacked by another country. All information to the effect that resistance is to cease is false.” Over the next two weeks, 5.2 million copies of the 32-page booklet, featuring illustrations, will be delivered to Swedish households. It is available in Swedish and English in print, with digital versions offered in multiple languages, including Arabic, Farsi, and Ukrainian, to ensure accessibility for all residents. The United Kingdom on Monday imposed sanctions against Iran's national airline and shipping carrier, measures it said were taken in response to Iran's transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia, Reuters reported. The state-owned Iran Air and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) will face an asset freeze for their role in supplying weapons to Russia for use on the battlefield against Ukraine, Britain said. "Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable," British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said. "We reiterate our call on Iran to cease its support for Russia's illegal war in Ukraine." The sanctions will further restrict Iran Air's direct commercial air services to and from the UK. Britain also sanctioned the Russian cargo ship PORT OLYA-3 for its role in transporting military supplies to Russia, it said. Russia is open to talks for ending the conflict in Ukraine if US President-elect Donald Trump initiates it, Russia’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, told reporters on Thursday (Nov. 14), Reuters reported. However, Gatilov added that any discussions would need to accept Russia’s current territorial gains.

Trump has frequently spoken against the extensive Western support for Ukraine and claimed he could end the conflict "within a day", though he has not revealed how he would achieve this. His victory in the November 5 election has raised concerns in Kyiv and other European capitals about the future of US support for Ukraine.

“Trump promised to settle the Ukrainian crisis overnight. OK, let him try. But we are realistic people of course, we understand that this will never happen. But if he starts or suggests something to start the political process, it’s welcome,” Gatilov said.

Gatilov added that any negotiation would need to take into account the "realities on the ground," adding that Ukraine has been losing ground in the two-year conflict. Gatilov said Trump’s election could offer a new chance for dialogue with the US, but he expressed doubt about a broader improvement in relations.

"The US political elite regardless of domestic political shifts, (Washington) consistently pursues a stance of containing Moscow, and this orientation is deeply rooted unfortunately, and the change of administration does little to alter it. The only shift (that) might be possible is dialogue between our countries, something that has been lacking during the last several years," Gatilov said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, has consistently stressed that peace requires the complete withdrawal of Russian forces and the return of all territories occupied by Moscow. Addressing European leaders in Budapest last week, Zelensky warned that concessions to Russia would be “unacceptable for Ukraine and suicidal for all Europe.”

The United States on Tuesday (Nov 12) expressed concern over North Korea's decision to supply troops to Russia “to continue their brutal war against Ukraine”.

During a daily press briefing, State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel confirmed that thousands of North Korean troops in Russia have started “engaging in combat operations” alongside Russian forces on the Ukraine border.

This comes as Russia and North Korea both ratified a historic defence pact, deepening their mutual support and military cooperation. This treaty would see the two nations provide each other military support “without delay” if either nation comes under attack.

US concerned by Russia-North Korea's deepening ties

When asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin's rationalisation of the dispatch of North Korean troops by signing a military treaty, Patel said, “We are incredibly concerned by Russia’s decision to turn to the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea — North Korea's official name) to supply soldiers to continue their brutal war against Ukraine”.

“Today I can confirm that over 10,000 DPRK soldiers have been sent to eastern Russia, and most of them have moved to the far western Kursk Oblast, where they have begun engaging in combat operations with Russian forces,” he said.

The State Department spokesperson further revealed that the Russian forces have trained their North Korean counterparts in “UAV and basic infantry operations, including trench clearing, which are critical skills for frontline operations”.

“The United States is consulting closely with our allies and partners and other countries in the region on the implications of this, on these developments,” he added.

US 'incredibly concerned' by North Korea troops in Russia, confirms 10,000 soldiers have joined Ukraine war

Russia on Wednesday (Nov 13) escalated its assault on Ukraine, launching a barrage of drones and missiles, marking its first combined aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv in over two months.

This escalation comes amid critical developments on the battlefield, with Russian forces advancing in eastern Ukraine and fresh concerns about the future of American aid to Kyiv following Republican candidate Donald Trump’s election victory.

The pre-dawn barrage sent explosions echoing across Kyiv and saw residents seeking shelter in an underground metro station.

Kyiv officials reported one injury in the suburb of Brovary, where debris from a downed drone struck a man. Emergency crews released images of firefighters extinguishing flames at various impact sites.

Simultaneously, the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, which Russia claims as part of its territory, faced a separate drone attack, resulting in the death of a 52-year-old woman, according to the region's governor. Air raid alarms in Kyiv began sounding around 04:30 GMT, warning of an impending missile strike.

“As missiles were approaching Kyiv, the enemy simultaneously launched a ballistic missile attack on the capital. The enemy attack ended with another drone strike,” said the city authorities.

Just a day earlier, a Russian strike on President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown claimed the lives of a young mother and her three children.

Before that, last week, both Russia and Ukraine launched record overnight drone strikes against each other.

Ukraine, for months, has been urgently calling for more air defence systems from Western allies to counter these increasingly aggressive attacks by Russia. However, now with Trump's win in the United States the aid which Kyiv has been receiving from the US is in peril, as the president-elect has been known to call the assistance a drain on American resources.

Russia escalates attack on Ukraine, hits Kyiv with major drone and missile strikes

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly came extremely close to launching a nuclear weapon in Ukraine in October 2022. As per a report by The Sun, an updated biography of former British Prime Minister Liz Truss details the escalation and that her final days in office were spent examining weather maps and preparing for UK radiation cases.

This was after American spies sent "exquisite" intelligence that Putin was seriously close to giving the go-ahead to a nuke attack. The United States raised concerns that there was a 50 per cent chance Russia could deploy a tactical nuke on the Ukrainian battlefields. Another scenario cited was that it might test a larger bomb over the Black Sea.

The biography, titled Out of the Blue, mentions that Truss was concerned about Britain being affected by the attack due to "wrong weather patterns" and spent "numerous hours studying satellite weather data and wind directions".

According to the book, Whitehall disaster planners were afraid that if an attack happened, radioactive material in the atmosphere could travel across Europe from any blast zone.

Notably, Putin has turned up the heat in Ukraine in the last few weeks. He has deployed 50,000 Russian and North Korean troops to try and take Kursk before Donald Trump is sworn in as the new president of the United States. Notably, Trump is expected to intervene and support talks to end the two-and-a-half-year-long war.

The war is expected to escalate in the coming weeks since, as per a leading military commander in Ukraine, "tens of thousands of enemy soldiers" have reached Kursk to throw out Kyiv's forces.

A report by the Washington Post earlier suggested that Putin and Trump had talked over the phone after the Republican won the presidential election last week. The two were said to have talked about the Ukraine war, with Trump telling him to end the conflict.

However, the Kremlin has rejected the reports, saying no such call took place between the two. "This is completely false information," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

The Washington Post quoted "anonymous sources familiar with the matter" as saying that Trump "reminded Putin" of America's sizable military presence in Europe.

Meanwhile, Trump did have a call with Ukrainian President Zelensky who confirmed it in a post on X. He wrote, "I had an excellent call with President Trump and congratulated him on his historic landslide victory - his tremendous campaign made this result possible."
