A foreign language film has never won the movie industry's most prestigious honour, the best picture Oscar. That may be about to change, if Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's critically-acclaimed 'Roma'&nbsp;scores the big win on Sunday (February 24).

Shot entirely in Spanish and an indigenous Mexican language, 'Roma' broke out of the foreign language film category, scoring nominations, not only for best picture, but also director, lead and supporting actress, screenplay, and multiple technical fields.

Other foreign language-nominated films followed suit.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmark's 'Never Look Away', about a struggling artist in Nazi, and then Communist, eastern Germany, is also nominated for best cinematography. Poland's 'Cold War,'&nbsp;the story of a dark romance between a pianist and a singer, scored a best director nomination for Pawel Pawlikowski.

Whether the surge of interest in foreign language films is fleeting or sign of things to come split opinions at a reception on Thursday (February 21) celebrating the nominated foreign language films.

"This year, because of 'Roma,' I suppose, which is a huge film and by a director who is kind of familiar here as well, I think the foreign language has transcended its usual slot. But I think maybe it's an anomaly. I'm not sure it's a sign of massive changes," Pawlikowski told Reuters.

"I think the Academy has always been surprisingly open and ahead of its time in its internationality, so I just see this as a continuation of something that they've always been doing," said Henckel von Donnersmark.

Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, whose film 'Capernaum'&nbsp;tells the story of a 12-year-old boy in a Beirut slum, was more hopeful.

"I feel like it's changing, especially this year, you can see that the films that are in the foreign film category are really strong and everybody's talking about how strong this year is. So I think there's a change. There's some kind of shift," she said.

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda said increased diversity in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that hands out the Oscars, could see more recognition for international films.

"I actually have the right to vote as an Academy member as well and I think that when you get a greater variety of people being involved in the voting, then that's going to shift the result, I think," the "Shoplifters" director said.

But with "Roma," his high acclaimed autobiographical love letter to his childhood, he flipped the script, so to speak -- a lot of the time, the actors didn't even have the whole script.

He filmed chronologically, in black and white, and did the filming himself. Sometimes he gave the cast contradictory instructions to see what would happen, and if it would yield movie magic.

Based on the 10 nominations his film earned for the Oscars on February 24 -- including four for Cuaron alone, for best picture, director, original screenplay and cinematography -- it seems he did something right.

The project is perhaps the most personal of his career -- a near-retelling of his childhood in Mexico City, in the Roma neighborhood, at 21 Tepeji Street.

Unlike some of his Hollywood fare, the film was made in Mexico, by Mexicans. The dialogue is in Spanish and the indigenous Mixtec language.

"It was a process that I did not know how to pull off -- reinventing and learning as I went was fundamental," the 57-year-old filmmaker, already an Oscar winner for best director and film editing for "Gravity," told AFP.

Cuaron wanted to make a film like no other in his career, which is why he went to extremes, like filming chronologically -- very rare for a feature film -- and not sharing the full script.

'Chaos' on purpose

"Roma" focuses on Cuaron's childhood nanny, a young woman from an indigenous community who gets pregnant after her first sexual experiences -- played by newcomer and Oscar nominee Yalitza Aparicio.

The film also examines the disintegration of his parents' marriage, taking a wider look at domestic dramas and societal hierarchies in 1970s Mexico.

Casting the film was part of Cuaron's reinvention: he insisted that the actors physically resemble the people they were playing -- usually not a requirement.

As a result, most of the cast are newcomers to the industry, like Aparicio, who ended up at the casting call by chance, as her sister was the one planning to audition.

Each morning, during the more than 100 days on set -- Cuaron's longest film shoot to date -- the director gave some cast members guidelines that did not mesh with those given to others.

"Those instructions were contradicting each other, so when I was running the camera, it was chaos, like a traffic jam -- but that's life, life is not neat," Cuaron said at a directors' symposium in January.

One such scene was when Cuaron's mother asks the children to write letters to their father, who they believe is on a work trip. They do not realize their parents are separated.

The director recounted that he told Marina de Tavira, who plays his mother, to make sure the eldest son "writes a really good letter to the father" -- a supposed representation of their close bond.

"And then I went secretly to the kid and said, 'The moment your mother starts speaking to you, just leave,'" he added.&nbsp;

He offered similarly confusing directions in a scene when Cleo, the nanny, has a stillborn child.

"My job as a director is to create these moments so people are just reacting the way they would react in real life," he said.

'I don't want it to be like that'

De Tavira, a veteran Mexican actress who also earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, told AFP that Cuaron's new style "required a period of adjustment."

Not knowing the script "helped a lot because there was no technical process of crafting the character, but rather it ended up being more just the result of reality, or diving head first into the ocean Alfonso gave us."

Cuaron said the resulting improvisation captivated him.

"I had done small bits of improv in the past, but nothing at this level, and it's something I will continue to experiment with," he said.

He used a similar method to handle production design. When designer Eugenio Caballero, an Oscar winner for "Pan's Labyrinth," got the call from Cuaron, the first thing he asked for was the script.

"He told me, 'No -- it's written but I don't want it to be like that,'" Caballero recalled.

After talking over long hours with Cuaron, he recreated the director's childhood home, right down to its Rationalist architecture. Attention to detail was key.

"What was on the table, what kind of street vendor was outside the house, what kind of noises did he hear -- that kind of thing," Caballero told AFP.

"From there, we built the movie."

Faced discrimination because of my skin colour, says 'Roma' star Yalitza Aparicio

The 2019 BAFTA film and television awards ceremony was dominated by two films – 'The Favourite', a romp through 18th-century British history, and 'Roma', a love letter to director Alfonso Cuarón’s home town of Mexico City.

'The Favourite' has been greeted with considerable critical acclaim in the UK and it was no surprise that it took home seven awards, including best British film. But the best film gong went to 'Roma' and Cuarón also picked up best director. The Netflix film has already attracted several awards (including best director for Cuarón at the Golden Globes), but beating big British films 'The Favourite' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to the top prize is a considerable coup for the streaming service, a relative newcomer to the world of movie awards.

'Roma'’s success cements Netflix’s position as a place for original and high-quality movies. It’s an unusual winner in several ways: A foreign language film shot in black and white and featuring largely unknown actors. Such films are often well-received but rarely pick up the biggest gongs.

'Roma'’s win means that the Oscar race for best picture is well and truly open. The Golden Globes awarded the big prizes to 'Bohemian Rhapsody', for best drama, and 'Green Book' for best musical or comedy, and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) gave Black Panther a nod for best ensemble cast. But I wouldn’t rule 'The Favourite' out of contention yet, either.

The players

Best actress awards have been a two-horse race this year between Olivia Colman (in 'The Favourite') and Glenn Close (in 'The Wife'). They each bagged a Golden Globe, for example, due to those awards using different categories for drama and comedy/musical, while Close won the SAG Award. Now Colman&nbsp;has the BAFTA, too. It’s unsurprising that the British awards ceremony celebrated Colman – and it’s too close to call as to which will bring home the Oscar in a few weeks’ time.

Personally, I’m torn, because both genuinely deserve it – and it’s an exceptionally strong category this year (in any other year, Melissa McCarthy’s superlative turn in 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?' would have been a strong favourite as well). But my heart says it should be Close, not only for her performance in 'The Wife' – she is heartbreakingly good – but because it’s crazy that an actor of her stature has yet to win an Academy Award.

Rami Malek took the best actor award for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' – with the British film again taking precedence over Christian Bale’s outstanding performance as former US vice-president Dick Cheney in Vice. As with Colman and Close, Bale and Malek have been in a close race for awards, with both picking up Golden Globes. But Malek’s triumph both at the BAFTAs and at the SAG awards must make his Oscar chances stronger.

Mahershala Ali – who is proving an astonishingly versatile performer – picked up another best-supporting actor trophy for 'Green Book', while Rachel Weisz took the best supporting actress award for 'The Favourite'. These wins highlight some of the issues with defining the difference between “lead” and “supporting”. 'Green Book' is largely a two-hander between Ali and Viggo Mortensen, while Weisz, Colman and Emma Stone are equal leads in 'The Favourite'. Colman herself pointed this out in her acceptance speech.

Talking points

The biggest misses of the night were the presenters’ scripts. Unfunny joke after unfunny joke were greeted with awkward silences and gritted teeth. When even talented comedic performers such as Melissa McCarthy, Riz Ahmed and host Joanna Lumley can’t raise a smile, there’s something seriously wrong. Jettisoning jokes altogether would have been far less embarrassing than “gags” that were barely coherent, never mind amusing.

Last year’s awards season was all about the big political statement, with the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements and big speeches from the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Frances McDormand. This year, there have been fewer grand gestures –nunless we count Rising Star winner Letitia Wright’s somewhat cringeworthy speech about God, which might have worked across the Atlantic, but in the British context just felt awkward.

Variety show

But let’s not forget that the darlings of this awards season have included a film about a woman whose husband has kept her in the shadows taking back control (The Wife), a female-centred power battle featuring lesbianism and political satire ('The Favourite') and a Spike Lee film about a black man infiltrating the KKK ('BlackKKlansman', which won best adapted screenplay).

We also had a critique of the political elite ('Vice'), a celebration of a queer idol ('Bohemian Rhapsody'), a multiracial buddy story featuring a gay black musician encountering racial hatred in the Deep South ('Green Book'), and two triumphantly diverse superhero flicks ('Black Panther' and best animation winner 'Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse'). It remains to be seen which films the Oscars will recognise – and what those choices might say about the Trump era. Awards for stories celebrating women, and the black and LGBTQ+ communities would send a message about the need for these voices to be heard (although there is still some way to go), but as plans for the president’s beloved wall project are under intense scrutiny, I wouldn’t bet against another triumph for the Mexican film.

The 2019 BAFTA film and television awards ceremony was dominated by two films – 'The Favourite', a romp through 18th-century British history, and 'Roma', a love letter to director Alfonso Cuarón’s home town of Mexico City.

The 2019 BAFTA film and television awards ceremony was dominated by two films – 'The Favourite', a romp through 18th-century British history, and 'Roma', a love letter to director Alfonso Cuarón’s home town of Mexico City. 'The Favourite' has been greeted with considerable critical acclaim in the UK and it was no surprise that it took home seven awards, including best British film. But the best film gong went to 'Roma' and Cuarón also picked up best director. The Netflix film has already attracted several awards (including best director for Cuarón at the Golden Globes), but beating big British films 'The Favourite' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to the top prize is a considerable coup for the streaming service, a relative newcomer to the world of movie awards. 'Roma'’s success cements Netflix’s position as a place for original and high-quality movies. It’s an unusual winner in several ways: A foreign language film shot in black and white and featuring largely unknown actors. Such films are often well-received but rarely pick up the biggest gongs. 'Roma'’s win means that the Oscar race for best picture is well and truly open. The Golden Globes awarded the big prizes to 'Bohemian Rhapsody', for best drama, and 'Green Book' for best musical or comedy, and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) gave Black Panther a nod for best ensemble cast. But I wouldn’t rule 'The Favourite' out of contention yet, either. The players Best actress awards have been a two-horse race this year between Olivia Colman (in 'The Favourite') and Glenn Close (in 'The Wife'). They each bagged a Golden Globe, for example, due to those awards using different categories for drama and comedy/musical, while Close won the SAG Award. Now Colman has the BAFTA, too. It’s unsurprising that the British awards ceremony celebrated Colman – and it’s too close to call as to which will bring home the Oscar in a few weeks’ time. Personally, I’m torn, because both genuinely deserve it – and it’s an exceptionally strong category this year (in any other year, Melissa McCarthy’s superlative turn in 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?' would have been a strong favourite as well). But my heart says it should be Close, not only for her performance in 'The Wife' – she is heartbreakingly good – but because it’s crazy that an actor of her stature has yet to win an Academy Award. Rami Malek took the best actor award for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' – with the British film again taking precedence over Christian Bale’s outstanding performance as former US vice-president Dick Cheney in Vice. As with Colman and Close, Bale and Malek have been in a close race for awards, with both picking up Golden Globes. But Malek’s triumph both at the BAFTAs and at the SAG awards must make his Oscar chances stronger. Mahershala Ali – who is proving an astonishingly versatile performer – picked up another best-supporting actor trophy for 'Green Book', while Rachel Weisz took the best supporting actress award for 'The Favourite'. These wins highlight some of the issues with defining the difference between “lead” and “supporting”. 'Green Book' is largely a two-hander between Ali and Viggo Mortensen, while Weisz, Colman and Emma Stone are equal leads in 'The Favourite'. Colman herself pointed this out in her acceptance speech. Talking points The biggest misses of the night were the presenters’ scripts. Unfunny joke after unfunny joke were greeted with awkward silences and gritted teeth. When even talented comedic performers such as Melissa McCarthy, Riz Ahmed and host Joanna Lumley can’t raise a smile, there’s something seriously wrong. Jettisoning jokes altogether would have been far less embarrassing than “gags” that were barely coherent, never mind amusing. Last year’s awards season was all about the big political statement, with the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements and big speeches from the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Frances McDormand. This year, there have been fewer grand gestures –nunless we count Rising Star winner Letitia Wright’s somewhat cringeworthy speech about God, which might have worked across the Atlantic, but in the British context just felt awkward. Variety show But let’s not forget that the darlings of this awards season have included a film about a woman whose husband has kept her in the shadows taking back control (The Wife), a female-centred power battle featuring lesbianism and political satire ('The Favourite') and a Spike Lee film about a black man infiltrating the KKK ('BlackKKlansman', which won best adapted screenplay). We also had a critique of the political elite ('Vice'), a celebration of a queer idol ('Bohemian Rhapsody'), a multiracial buddy story featuring a gay black musician encountering racial hatred in the Deep South ('Green Book'), and two triumphantly diverse superhero flicks ('Black Panther' and best animation winner 'Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse'). BAFTA 2019: Diverse set of winners led by 'The Favourite' and 'Roma' bodes well for the Oscars

It was a big night for Oscar favourites ‘Roma’ and ‘The Favourite’ that picked up big awards at BAFTA. The British Academy Film and Television Awards took place in London.

While ‘Roma’ took best picture and best director, ‘The Favourite’ grabbed more. It recorded 7 wins out of 12 nominations. Among the prizes, ‘The Favourite’ took best actress for Olivia Colman, best supporting actress for Rachel Weisz and also was named Outstanding British Film.&nbsp;

Rami Malek took home best actor for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

BAFTA 2019: 'The Favourite', 'Roma' take home big awards of the night

Netflix black-and-white production 'Roma'&nbsp;triumphed at the Bafta film awards on Sunday, boosting Oscar hopes for the US streaming giant despite concerns its business model undermines the film industry.

The cinematic love letter to director Alfonso Cuaron's childhood in Mexico City in the 1970s edged out black comedy 'The Favourite'&nbsp;for best film and best director.

"I'm seriously touched this film has been received the way it's been received," Cuaron said at a star-studded ceremony in London's Royal Albert Hall that was also attended by Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Cuaron thanked Netflix for "having the courage" to get behind &nbsp;"Roma" as he picked up the gong on stage.

The success of the film "in an age where fear and anger are proposed to divide us means the world to me", he said.

Netflix UK tweeted its congratulations, saying it was a "deeply moving film and deserves all the love it's getting".

The film portrays domestic strife and social hierarchy amid political turmoil and focuses on a housekeeper and nanny called Cleo, played by indigenous actress Yalitza Aparicio.

'Roma'&nbsp;dented expectations of a clean sweep by 'The Favourite'&nbsp;which picked up best actress for Olivia Colman as Queen Anne and best supporting actress for Rachel Weisz playing her confidante and lover.

The film, about a cantankerous 18th-century British queen and her scheming court, had been nominated for 12 awards and picked up seven on the night.

"She doesn't take herself too seriously and she enjoys what she's doing," Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos said of Colman.

Colman, 45, was up against Glenn Close The Wife') and Lady Gaga ('A Star is Born') -- the same power duo she will face at the Oscars on February 24.

Weisz won out against co-star Emma Stone who was nominated in the same category.

Weisz and Stone are also in the running for Oscars in a proud year for the British film industry.

'Roma' is also nominated for best picture at the Oscars later this month, the first-ever nomination for Netflix which has propelled it into the Hollywood club of elite filmmakers.

While it has progressively been welcomed at most major film festivals, Netflix still finds that Tinseltown's red carpet is not fully rolled out -- with theatres up in arms about its position as a distribution king and A-list content provider.

After the Oscar nominations came out, mega-theatre chains AMC and Regal -- by far the top two in the business in America -- announced that 'Roma'&nbsp;would not be screened in their annual best-picture showcases.

In all, 'Roma'&nbsp;was shown in roughly 900 theatres around the world -- more than any other Netflix film, but far short of the norm for a usual wide release. Netflix never released any box office data.

While Netflix has made some good-faith efforts to gain Hollywood's acceptance, it did so while only making minor concessions -- and no changes to its business model.

It only waited three weeks after the release of 'Roma'&nbsp;in theatres to put it up on its platform, far less than the 90 days that cinema owners ask studios to hold back.

Last year's ceremony saw Hollywood stars paint the red carpet black in solidarity with the #MeToo movement.

The 2019 edition has also been tinged by scandal.

Bafta removed 'Bohemian Rhapsody'&nbsp;director Bryan Singer from the Queen biopic's citation in the outstanding British film nomination "in light of recent very serious allegations".

This referred to an article in the US magazine The Atlantic detailing sexual misconduct allegations that included underage sex. Singer denies the story and the film itself was still up for the award, although it failed to win it.

Rami Malek's portrayal of the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury -- a victim of the AIDS epidemic in the days when homosexuality was taboo in rock-and-roll -- earned him the best actor award, however.

After winning the Bafta, he paid tribute to Mercury as "the greatest outsider of them all".

Malek won against Christian Bale's transformation into the humourless but powerful former US vice president Dick Cheney in 'Vice'.

Best supporting actor went to Mahershala Ali for 'Green Book', a comedy-drama in which he plays a jazz pianist on a tour of America's Deep South in 1962.

Netflix film 'Roma' wins big with best picture, director at BAFTA ahead of Oscars 2019

Alfonso Cuaron was named best director by his peers on Saturday for his semi-autobiographical film 'Roma,' cementing his front-runner status ahead of the Oscars in three weeks time. 
 
In one of the last major Hollywood ceremonies before the Feb. 24 Oscars, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) awarded its top prize to the Mexican director for his critically-acclaimed black and white movie about a domestic worker in 1970s Mexico. 
 
'Roma' has 10 Oscar nominations, including best director and best picture. 
 
The Directors Guild of America (DGA) award is one of the top indicators of Oscar glory. All but seven of the DGA winners since 1948 have gone on to win the best director Oscar, and often the top prize of best picture. 
 
The DGA ceremony proved another disappointing night for Bradley Cooper, the actor-turned director of musical romance 'A Star is Born.' 
 
Cooper made his directorial debut with the movie, as well as acting in it, but on Saturday he lost both the DGA award for best feature film as well as the prize for first time feature film director. The first time director award went to Bo Burnham for young adult drama 'Eighth Grade.' 
 
'A Star is Born' has garnered multiple nominations, including eight Oscar nods, but neither Cooper nor lead actress Lady Gaga have secured major awards so far. 
 
Hollywood`s long awards season has often proved contradictory and inconsistent this year. 
 
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG), many of whose voters are also members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, last month selected musical 'Bohemian Rhapsody' for its top award. But 'Roma' and British historical comedy 'The Favourite,' which also has 10 Oscar nominations, were not among the SAG choices. 
 
The Producers Guild, also a reliable bellwether of Oscar success, in January chose 1960s road trip movie 'Green Book' as its top movie.

Spanish film 'Roma' awarded best picture by LA Film Critics Association

Netflix Inc will debut three of its upcoming original films in a limited number of theaters before the movies appear on the streaming service, the company said on Wednesday.

Directed by Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuaron, 'Roma'&nbsp;will debut on Netflix and in additional theaters on December 14. 
 
At the end of September, Netflix had 137 million subscribers to its movie and TV streaming service. 
 
It began stocking its library with original films just three years ago. 
 
Netflix had been insisting that any movies it sent to theaters be available to its streaming membership on the same day. 
 
Most large theater chains remain opposed to Netflix films, and some prominent directors have objected to the idea that their movies would be seen mostly on the small screen.

Now, Netflix's strategy is evolving.

Liverpool manager Juergen&nbsp;Klopp accepted that they got lucky against AS Roma on Wednesday and that the game could have been better.

Liverpool came into the match at the Stadio Olimpico with a 5-2 first-leg advantage after they tore Roma apart at Anfield last week.

At the news conference, Klopp says,&nbsp;"I have to start, and it is easy to do so, with a big compliment for Rome. What a performance, what a comeback, what a brave football game. It was clear that they take the risk they took and we punished it with the first goal in a perfect way. We scored the first goal for them by themselves, unlucky of course. A little bit of slapstick and then we scored the second one."

He also talked about what went wrong during the game.

"We had brilliant counter-attacks but we were not patient enough to finish them and because we did not do that, it was clear the game stays open and then everything can happen. We did not defend very good today, pretty much the three midfielders were pretty alone," he added.

Liverpool have looked vulnerable at the back at times this season in the Premier League, losing composure under pressure and dropping points in games they should have won comfortably.

For an overall match, he says,&nbsp;"So, it was the first time that we were not really as good as we can be, so we needed luck and that's what we had. But I think that over the whole Champions League campaign so far it's absolutely deserved," Klopp said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"As I said before the game, it would have been deserved for Roma, I think for both teams it would have been crazy if we played extra time, if you go two times 15 minutes I have no clue how that would have happened, it would have been really crazy. But it was 7-6 on aggregate which sounds crazy because it is crazy," he added.

"We came in the competition as a qualifier and now we are in the final and I am really, really happy for the boys and really happy for the club and really happy for our fans. It was a fantastic ride so far. Now we will go to Kiev. It sounds crazy but it is the truth," he concluded.&nbsp;

"People say that I was the one that sold Salah and it is the opposite," Mourinho, who currently manages Manchester United, told ESPN.

"I was the one that bought Salah. I was the one that told Chelsea to buy Salah... But he came as a young kid, physically he was not ready, mentally he was not ready, socially and culturally he was lost and everything was tough for him.

"Chelsea decided to sell him, OK? ... So the decision to send him on loan was a decision we made collectively, but after that, the decision to sell him and to use that money to buy another player wasn't mine... "

Salah has scored 43 goals across all competitions this season and is in contention to win the European Golden Boot.

"I think everything has surprised even him. It has been fantastic," Mourinho added.

"But he is a great player that has reached the peak of maturity, he has already lived several other experiences and now has fitted perfectly into the style of play of the team, of the coach and of the club as well..."

Roma warm up for Liverpool clash with 3-0 win at SPAL

Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of the Champions League and on the other hand, Liverpool will clash with AS Roma to book a berth in the finals of Champions League according to the draw made in Nyon, Switzerland on April 13.

A determined AS Roma beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 as a magnificent finish by Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko sent them through on away goals.

Roma celebrated only their second win in six meetings with the Ukrainian side and got revenge for a 6-2 aggregate defeat by Shakhtar at the same stage of the competition in 2011.
