UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing a fresh revolt within the Conservative party over his tax plans in the budget, months after the Indian-origin Tory leader took over the reins of Britain.

UK PM Rishi Sunak in trouble amid a fresh wave of revolt within the conservative party?

Mick Lynch is the frontrunner in the UK train strikes protesting against the government and train corporations over wages, job losses, and changes to terms and conditions. He is the general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), the British trade union. The train strikes in the UK come weeks leading up to Christmas causing trouble for many.

What is the dispute?

According to unions, any wage offer should reflect the growing cost of living. However, the train sector is under pressure to cut costs after the epidemic emptied its coffers. Unions say that measures must be agreed upon in order to fund pay raises and modernise the railway. Network Rail is to remove 1,900 positions as part of changes to the way its maintenance teams operate, while it claims that the majority of this can be accomplished by employees departing voluntarily. The RMT opposes some of the modifications and wants an assurance that no compulsory job losses would occur.

Mick Lynch, the RMT's head, has been one of the strikes' key faces, bargaining behind the scenes and speaking to the media about the action they're doing. After months of unsuccessful discussions, he recently sought a meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Who is Mick Lynch?

The 60-year-old was raised in London's Paddington neighbourhood, dropped out of school at the age of 16, and went on to become an electrician. He started working in construction and joined a union, which resulted in him being blacklisted, for which he eventually earned a hefty payment. Lynch began working for Eurostar and became engaged in the RMT. He spent two years as the RMT's assistant general secretary and two terms on its executive until being nominated interim general secretary in 2020 owing to Mick Cash's illness. Despite stepping down, Lynch won an election and assumed the post permanently in 2021. In this capacity, he has emerged as a prominent character in the ongoing rail strikes, with thousands of RMT members planning to strike over employment, wages, and conditions.

What is his demand?

Mick said that unless assurances are given concerning employment, pensions, and negative changes to working conditions, railway strikes would continue. Lynch has also accused rail firms of neglecting to provide a better contract following the three walkouts in June. Companies, he claims, are 'ransacking' terms and conditions, and RMT will continue to negotiate in good faith but will not be pushed or cajoled. He went on to say that the government should cease interfering in this conflict so that the rail employers may reach a negotiated settlement with us.

What is Mick Lynch’s salary?

There has been some discussion over how much Lynch gets paid for his job. According to reports, the trade unionist gets paid £84,000 a year. Piers Morgan said in an appearance on TalkTV that Lynch is paid more than £124,000, which Lynch refuted. Lynch is said to have received £763,000 in pay and perks since joining the union in 2015.

The United Kingdom’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt unveiled a number of post-Brexit reforms to City policy, on Friday, referred to as the “Edinburgh reforms”. The announcement was made at an industry roundtable with a group of chief executives from banks and insurers. The over-30-point package partially proposes to reform rules which were introduced after the 2008 financial crisis to protect savers and taxpayers.

The reforms were dubbed the post-Brexit “Big Bang 2.0” by Hunt’s predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng and are reportedly some of the biggest changes since former UK PM Margaret Thatcher's wave of deregulation in the 1980s. More than 30 regulatory reforms will “unlock investment and turbocharge growth in towns and cities across the UK”, said the Treasury, in a statement.

The proposal encompasses a number of plans including consulting on a new central bank digital currency to change tax rules for investment trusts in real estate. Hunt also outlines plans to “repeal, and replace, hundreds of pages of burdensome EU retained laws governing financial services”, in a bid to make the UK one of the “most open, dynamic and competitive financial services hubs in the world.”

“The Edinburgh Reforms seize on our Brexit freedoms to deliver an agile and home-grown regulatory regime that works in the interest of British people and our businesses,” said Hunt, in a statement. These rules, once created to safeguard people from the financial crisis are now seen as a hindrance to London’s banks and insurers compared to their peers across the world.

One of the provisions created in the wake of the 2008 crisis was the ring-fencing rule which separated customer deposits from riskier investment banking operations with the aim to protect them. The Treasury claims that these rules are particularly burdensome on lenders who wish to change them, “while maintaining protections for depositors,” the statement added.

Furthermore, the government will also launch a consultation about regulating rating agencies which review the performance of various companies along environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) to ensure these products are transparent and use consistent standards.

The Edinburgh Reforms also include a number of consultations and discussions around the Consumer Credit Act which regulates credit card purchases and personal loans, a provision which dates back to the 1970s in a bid to “modernise” it.

Another reform which will be under review as a part of the 30-point plan is the “senior managers' regime” which holds managers and bosses personally and financially responsible for infractions, which Hunts believes in its current form, is too burdensome.

However, the incumbent chancellor has also said that he was mindful of the lessons from the 2008 crisis which brought some UK banks to the brink of potential collapse and that he has taken these steps “very carefully”.

“We have to make sure that we do not unlearn the lessons of 2008, but at the same time recognise that banks today have much stronger balance sheets, and we have a much stronger resolution system if things do go wrong,” said Hunt, during the Financial Times’ Global Boardroom webinar, when asked about the potential risks of these reforms.

“No, the UK has always had and always will have an incredibly respected and robust system of regulation for the financial services sector,” he told the press in response to the potential risks and when asked if he was being reckless by announcing the relaxation of rules on investment banks.

He added, “But it's also important to make sure the industry is competitive. There are a million people employed in financial services and they're not just in London, in the city. They're spread across the country, in Edinburgh, in Belfast, in Leeds, in Bournemouth.”

The UK PM who was on a visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, also insisted that these reforms will ensure the industry remains competitive, create more jobs, and will always be a safe place where consumers will be protected.

United States President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have agreed to increase gas exports between the two countries. According to the agreement, the amount of gas exported from the US to UK will increase substantially in the near future to offset the crisis caused by the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. With Russia cutting off gas supply to Europe, the gas bills in the UK have skyrocketed and to counter the crisis, the two countries announced the “energy security and affordability partnership” and will also set up a joint action group including officials from both sides.

“Together the UK and US will ensure the global price of energy and the security of our national supply can never again be manipulated by the whims of a failing regime,” Sunak told reporters.

While the UK was not overly reliant on Russian gas supplies, the competition in the market for alternate sources following the sanctions imposed on Russia left the country in a tough situation.

A day after UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the country's 'golden era' with China was over, the latter has been removed from the construction of the new Sizewell C nuclear power station. China General Nuclear (CGN), a state-owned energy corporation has been booted out of the project and will be replaced by French partner EDF, the British government announced. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) added that Britain's energy sovereignty was at the heart of the issue when deciding to allow CGN to exit the project. After the announcement, the Chinese embassy released a statement saying, "As a principle, we oppose any discriminatory practices against Chinese businesses. It is hoped that the UK side will provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese firms in the UK." Rishi Sunak says nurses' demand for 19 per cent pay hike 'obviously unaffordable'

Barely a month after being elected, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is already facing rebellion spearheaded by his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. The former prime ministers are calling out Sunak over his government's controversial tax raises and refusal to allow new onshore wind projects in England.

Both, Johnson and Truss, want the ban, which has been in place since 2014, to be lifted. Notably, when Johnson was in office, he did not even attempt to reverse the longstanding decision.

According to the Guardian, Johnson and Truss are among the 20 Tory members who have signed an amendment to Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill put tabled by Conservative MP Simon Clarke.

The amendment seeks to mandate the government to change planning rules within six months to allow new projects.

Taking to Twitter, Clarke welcomed the support from the former prime ministers,

"Delighted to have the backing of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, together with MPs from right across the Conservative Party, for my amendment to allow onshore wind where (and only where) there is community consent.”

"A pro growth, pro green policy at a time when we need both," he added.

The ban on onshore windmills was implemented by David Cameron in 2015. When Truss came to power, she had pledged to change the rules, but she was ousted before she could take a decision.

The latest controversy comes against the backdrop of growing calls within Britain to be self-sufficient in energy since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

During the Tory leadership campaign, which Truss won, Sunak said that he was devising an “energy sovereignty strategy”, which maintained the ban on new onshore wind. The Labour party had slammed his move, accusing him of “economic illiteracy”.

The Rishi Sunak administration in UK is reportedly working on moving the country into a Swiss-style relationship with the European Union. The British government wants to build a closer economic relationship with the EU to avoid current trade barriers, reported the Sunday Times.

As per the report, the move could take place over the next decade. This comes after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt signalled last week that the Sunak administration intends to break ranks with Boris Johnson’s approach with the bloc, as per the Independent. The report made it clear that the UK did not wish to reinstate provisions facilitating the free movement of people.

Like the UK, Switzerland is not a member of the European Union but has a closer economic relationship under a series of bilateral agreements. This gives the country free access to a part of the EU’s internal market, while also allowing the free movement of people.

The EU and the UK are locked in a long-running dispute over the Northern Ireland protocol; however, there have been renewed hopes in recent weeks. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt admitted this week that Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal caused damaging trade barriers with the EU.
