The Tories under Johnson called, and won the elections held in December 2019, essentially on one issue: Brexit.

The Brexit finally came into effect on January 31, 2020 under new Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the cusp of Covid pandemic.

About 41 months later, after a spree of controversies including the partygate scandal, Johnson was forced to resign. Succeeded by Liz Truss whose tenure infamously lasted less than that of a Lettuce, Rishi Sunak took over as UK Prime Minister in October 2022.

For the much of his premiership, Johnson saw his relationship with Sunak as that of a 'mentor' and 'mentee' and when Sunak eventually quit as secretary of exchequer on July 5, 2022, 'without even a text', Johnson was aghast.

"Who the f--k does he think he is?," Johnson is reported to have said with a seething reaction in a new book called 'The Right To Rule', authored by Ben Riley-Smith, the political editor of The Telegraph newspaper.

The author claimed that Sunak began preparing ground for his premiership bid much before February 2023, when Sue Gray's initial investigation findings about Partygate scandal indicted Johnson of violating Covid restrictions to host parties at his official prime ministerial residences.

"One such indicator came in late autumn 2021, when a special adviser to then Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis overheard the Chancellor’s inner team in a Westminster pub discussing the shape of a Sunak premiership. ‘They were literally plotting out who they thought should be in various positions in the Cabinet,’ said a source familiar with what was heard," claims the book, an excerpt of which was published in The Telegraph.

The timeline of this claim is significant.

The alleged discussions related to Sunak's premiership occurred even before December 23, 2023, when 'ReadyforRishi' domain name was registered online, the earliest previously reported indication of Sunak's intent to canvass support for his potential premiership.

Meanwhile, for Boris Johnson who was still the Prime Minister then, Sunak's potential plans of succession continued to create waves of political discomfort.

"One wild and unsubstantiated rumour he voiced was that Sunak’s father-in-law, Indian billionaire Narayana Murthy, had Dominic Cummings on a retainer," the book claims, while referring to British political strategist who served as Chief Advisor to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson from July 2019 to November 2020.

Germany gives 'Patriot' to Ukraine | Putin meets Hungary PM Orban in Moscow

A new dawn is rising on Britain that will see the Labour Party return to power after 14 years in a landslide election victory. For the UK's Conservatives who will now sit among the opposition, the 2024 election results were only the last push to the ditch that started with Brexit and progressed through misgoverning, scandal and infights.

The soon-to-be former prime minister Rishi Sunak, in a manner of speaking, became the last one in line holding the baby handed over to him by previous prime ministers from his party.

And it was indeed a revolving door of prime ministers. Between 2010 and 2024, there were five: David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

Cameron set the ball rolling for the downfall of Tories with the Brexit referendum in 2016. While he himself was confident that Britons would vote in favour of staying within the European Union, the party itself fought against him, led by so-called 'Brexiteers' like Boris Johnson.

Once the referendum favoured Brexit, Cameron had no other option but to quit, which led to Theresa May taking charge.

The national mood was in favour of Brexit, and even a sense of national pride spread in the nation, as much of the population, the rural folk and working class in particular, thought Britain's exit from EU would lead to an exodus of European workers and businesses out of UK, which will benefit local labour, businesses and industry.

But year after year, data seemed to suggest that the cost of Brexit exceeded the benefits. On trade, Britain scrambled to find alternative partners in the Commonwealth, particularly India, with which it is negotiating a free trade deal. The European labour exodus did only create shortages, that had to be filled with immigration from elsewhere, again from Commonwealth countries like India.

Despite all these, an overconfident May called a snap poll in 2017, with the intention of increasing the Conservative majority accruing from the 'success' of Brexit. That was not to be. The Conservatives did win, but they lost five seats from the previous tally.

During the years running up to the 2017 election and after that, Boris Johnson emerged as a more robust advocate for British conservatism and protectionism. With a mix of populist right-wing rhetoric and insider politics, Boris managed to oust May in an inner-party coup, mainly arising from her inability to pass the Brexit legislation in parliament. He led the Tories to victory in yet another snap election in 2019, with one of the biggest majorities for the party.

As Boris was affirming his grip on power, Covid pandemic hit, making UK one of the greatest sufferers.

It was followed by the so-called 'partygate' scandal, which exposed how Prime Minister Boris Johnson and others were flouting Covid norms they had set for common folk, by holding parties in official premises.

Infightings, backstabbing and no-trust motions followed, with Liz Truss replacing Boris, only to become the shortest-serving PM of UK, defeated by opposition within the party to her budget and economic reform plans.

In place of Truss came Rishi Sunak, the first Asian and Indian-origin prime minister of Britain.

Throughout his career, Sunak was fighting the twin flames of cost of living crisis in the UK, and the no-holds-barred squabbles and clamour for Tory leadership. His erstwhile allies, notably Suella Braverman who became UK home secretary, left the cabinet over issues ranging from immigration reform to British economy.

Added to these were Sunak's image as a rich PM out of touch with the nation and its problems, particularly exacerbated by the wealth of his wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of Indian tech titan Narayana Murty.

In a way, Sunak's troubles are now over, and Britain has got a more decisive verdict in the form of the return of Labour for the first time since 2010.

But the damage has been done for Tories. So many top party leaders, at least 11 of them cabinet members, have lost the election.

They include Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the House of Commons, Grant Shapps and Jacob Rees-Mogg.

While he himself won the Richmond and Northallerton constituency, Sunak conceded defeat for his party.

He said there is much to learn from the "sobering verdict", adding, "I take responsibility for the loss."

Suella Braverman, meanwhile, won her seat of Fareham and Waterlooville.

Boris Johnson, who stayed away during much of campaigning, returned in the last days to the podium, only to 'dance on Sunak's grave' as one report put it.

UK: Big win for Labour Party in UK elections, Keir Starmer says 'Public ready for change'

The Labour leader Keir Starmer is set to become the UK prime minister after 14 years of Conservative rule that set off generational shifts with UK's exit from European Union and a further decline of British geopolitical heft. The Labour party chief Keir Starmer is unseating Rishi Sunak as prime minister.

Here's what this means for India-UK ties:

Starting from where Rishi left

India and the UK are working to secure a free trade pact but the negotiations remain stalled in the 14th round due to summer of elections both in India and the UK. Now with new governments in both the capitals, the fifteenth round of negotiations is expected to begin in the coming future.

The point of contention remains with the UK's ask for greater market access into the world's third biggest economy amid New Delhi's focus on protecting domestic players.

The India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be a key inflection point for bilateral ties between the two countries and the last British prime ministers, Conservatives Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, were keen to be at the centre of the same.

Boris even commented that India-UK FTA would be concluded by the Diwali of 2022 and that it would be signed upon a bilateral visit by the leaders of either country. But the domestic political storm after partygate scandal threw Johnson off British premiership and brought in Liz Truss to the Downing Street.

After Truss, Rishi Sunak too expected to finish off the negotiations either by September 2023 G20 summit in New Delhi or the Diwali of 2023. But the contentious issues could not be sorted and negotiations reached a halt as election season loomed in both the countries.

Now Starmer just like his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, has full five years in power and that leaves a lot of room for negotiations and sorting out points of contention. In all likelihood, Starmer could helm over the defining moment of India-UK ties by being at the center of a Free Trade Agreement.

What Keir Starmer's win means for India-UK ties?

During his campaign trail, Starmer has been vocal about his vision for robust UK-India relations spanning trade, technology, environment and security operation.

Labour's political calculus has British-Indian community making a crucial part of the demographic equation.

Setting the tone for the party's India-UK outlook at the India Global Forum (IGF) last year, Starmer had declared, "I have a clear message for you all today: this is a changed Labour Party. What my Labour government will seek with India is a relationship based on our shared values of democracy and aspiration."

A Labour win with Starmer could mean continuation of a stricter handling of anti-Hindu hate crimes in UK. Last week while visiting the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Kingsbury, Starmer had said "there is absolutely no place for Hinduphobia in Britain".

While acknowledging the past missteps, including the Labour's perceived stance on the Kashmir conflict, Starmer has committed to eliminating any extremist views that could strain UK-India relations.

Here's what this means for India-UK ties: Starting from where Rishi left India and the UK are working to secure a free trade pact but the negotiations remain stalled in the 14th round due to summer of elections both in India and the UK. But for the Tories, this marked an inauspicious start. Sunak's "Clear Plan. Bold Action. Secure Future" seemed to be getting lost in the sound of the Labour Party's new anthem "Things can only get better".

The experts are calling it a 'wipe-out' election, as Sunak is appearing to move towards his doom and the Conservative Party is expected to win far fewer seats.

Is Sunak losing the ground?

At the beginning of the campaign, Sunak found himself in hot soup when he walked away from commemorations in France which marked the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion - a step which was not taken in good taste by the people.

Since then, Sunak has been seen travelling across the country, knocking on the doors of houses and meeting with people, giving speeches and attending various events in which he is making a promise for a better future.

But his campaign trail appeared to run through a lot of urban areas, with less focus on rural parts of the country.

Sunak also failed to remove the taint of political chaos and mismanagement on the party, in the wake of the Tories getting investigated for betting on the election date by using inside information.

He has also failed to wash off his hands from Conservative leader and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's partygate scandal, which has further hurt the party's reputation.

Throughout his election campaign - in which he held discussions with factory workers, spoke about the welfare of farmers, shook hands with army men, underlined his Hindu religious sentiment by visiting BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, played football and re-painted his "family man" image - he failed to answer one simple question - why is the election happening this summer.

Even various Tory candidates have expressed their frustration at how he is running the campaign, which they have called the “worst campaign in our lifetime”.

Sunak, whose one Instagram post read "It's not over until it's over", was seen hunting for support from people among the robots at an ungodly hour of 4:50 am on the last day.

As the day drew to an end, Sunak said that his party had not given up on winning the elections. The statement came even before elections were set to be held.

Starmer fights Labour battle in Tory countryside

As Tories predicted the biggest “landslide majority” for the Labour Party on the last day of the campaign, Sir Keir Starmer blew his trumpet from Carmarthenshire, as he loudly and clearly said, "Change can only happen if people vote Labour tomorrow".

For the Labour Party, local campaigning remained their focus and also emerged as their core strength. Starmer toured 'safe' rural Conservative seats and appealed for a complete majority to bring the changes.

He visited rural Buckinghamshire, a traditional Tory heartland, just three days before the elections - which experts labelled as a winning step.

At this time, the voters are upset over various issues - which are the poor performance of the hospitals, local governments running out of money with Birmingham declaring bankruptcy, prisons reaching their breaking point and living standards dramatically dropping.

Starmer and his Labour Party are attempting to win the ground by promising solutions to both economic and social problems while offering hope to people in exchange for votes; quite an act of virtuosity in the field of politics.

While calling it a "summer of change", Starmer has been promising the basics - construction of houses, protection of the renters, creation of high-quality jobs, wealth creation, saving the National Health Service (NHS) and ending the knife crime.

He posed with turban-wearing Sikh men and spoke to Hindu devotees at Swaminarayan Temple in Kingsbury while wearing a flower garland, as he ensured that all the faiths and communities would be respected.

In his demand from the voters to "stop the chaos", Starmer is promising a better future with an improved lifestyle to the people of the United Kingdom.

With the general elections due on July 4, it still remains to be seen who emerges as the winner but poll predicters have already pronounced a return of Labour.

UK election campaign in final hours | Boris Johnson joins Tory campaign

Boris Johnson made a surprise appearance on the General Election campaign trail on Tuesday night (Jul 2), telling a Tory rally, "Don't let the Putinistas deliver the Corbynistas".

“I couldn’t say no to Rishi when he asked me to come and help,” the former prime minister said. “And we all are here because we love our country.”

Johnson addressed a Conservative campaign event at London's National Army Museum before Rishi Sunak arrived to deliver his speech. He was met with cheers, claps, whistles, and chants of “Boris, Boris, Boris.”

Notably, it was Johnson’s first appearance at a Tory campaign event in the run-up to the General Election, having earlier restricted his participation to endorsing individual candidates, writing supportive newspaper columns and reportedly putting his name on hundreds of thousands of letters sent out to voters.

He reiterated warnings of a Labour "supermajority" and cautioned that a vote for Reform UK would contribute to that outcome. Johnson also repeated the Tory jibe that the Labour leader Keir Starmer would clock off work at 6 pm if he were to become prime minister.

Starmer described it as "laughably pathetic and desperate" that the Tories have attacked him over his preference to avoid working after 6 pm on Fridays to spend time with his family.

It may be mentioned here that Starmer previously said in interviews that he always reserved Friday evenings to spend with his family, unless “it’s absolutely urgent”.

Rishi Sunak followed his predecessor on stage and said, “It’s great to have our Conservative family united.”

Sunak added, "Just the other day when Starmer was saying that Jeremy Corbyn would have been a better prime minister than Boris. Shameful! Can you imagine what that would have meant for Ukraine? What it would have meant for our country's security, our defence, the damage it would have done to our economy?"

While Johnson spoke about the claims by the Tories that Labour would increase taxes.

"If you actually want higher taxes this year or if you feel you’ve got a few thousands to spare, then vote for Labour on Thursday (July 4). If you want unrestrained immigration and mandatory wokery, and pointless kowtowing to Brussels again, then go vote for Starmer," Johnson said.

Liberal Democrats deputy leader Daisy Cooper called Johnson's appearance as an insult to people.

UK retailers feel the pinch as the country heads for the upcoming election. Prices rose at the slowest pace in almost three years month, according to Reuters. While this is a welcome pause for consumers, who have been grappling with high prices since COVID, retailers are now concerned about growth prospects.

Annual shop price inflation slows to 0.2 per cent in June from 0.6 per cent in May. Prices for non-food goods slumped 1 per cent after a similar drop in May. This comes as food inflation slows for the 14th month in a row.

Retailers are also sceptical about increasing prices in times to come, as discretionary spending is slowly recovering in the country. The Bank of England is expected to cut interest rates in August as economic indicators align.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been facing the heat over economic growth. However, he praised his party's policies for bringing down inflation. At a parliamentary discussion, he said, 'Since we last met, taxes have been cut by 900 pounds, state pension’s gone up, free childcare has been expanded, wages have risen for nine months in a row, Mr Speaker and just today inflation down again to 3.2 per cent. Our plan is working, and the conservatives are delivering a brighter future for Britain.'

Despite Sunak's optimism, the opposition labour party and its leader, Keir Starmer, are also gaining momentum. Starmer recently had a different perspective on falling inflation. He said, 'It is back where it was three years ago, but that doesn't mean that prices are coming down, it doesn't mean that mortgages are coming down, and if there's one thing that's been picked up on this campaign trail over and over again, it's people being fed up with the government sort of saying, oh, you need to thank us now, we're turning a page, everything's fine.'

UK elections: Which side will the undecided votes sway?

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who is expected to helm over the "worst-ever" performance of Conservative Party in the July elections, prayed at London's BAPS Swaminarayan Temple — popularly known as Neasden Temple — along with wife Akshata Murty. The couple, who visited the temple on Saturday (June 29) – on the last weekend of the general election campaign, was greeted with loud cheers as they performed puja guided by the priests.

“I am Hindu, and like all of you, I draw inspiration and comfort from my faith,” the British prime minister said.

"I was proud to be sworn in as a member of Parliament on the 'Bhagavad Gita'. Our faith teaches us to do our duty and not fret about the outcome as long as one does it faithfully. That is what I was brought up to believe by my wonderful and loving parents and that is how I live my life; and that is what I want to pass on to my daughters as they grow up. It is dharma which guides me in my approach to public service," he further said as quoted by Press Trust of India.
