UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, reacting to a racial slur made about him by a Reform UK party supporter, on Friday (June 28) said he was deeply hurt and infuriated by the clipping.

Expressing his disapproval of the act, he said that he was anguished upon having to witness his two daughters see and hear what the people campaigning for Nigel Farage said.

Sunak, who was born in the southern English port city of Southampton in 1980 to Hindu parents of Punjabi Indian descent, was called a "f*cking Paki" by Reform canvasser Andrew Parker in a secretly filmed video by Channel 4 News.

"My two daughters have to see and hear Reform people who campaign for Nigel Farage calling me an effing Paki. It hurts and it makes me angry, and I think he has some questions to answer," Sunak responded to comments broadcast by Channel 4 News.

UK's first ethnic-minority PM said that the Reform activist's racial slur was "too important not to call out".

"I don't repeat those words lightly, I do so deliberately because this is too important not to call out clearly for what it is," he added.

In Channel 4's video, Parker can be heard saying, "I've always been a Tory (Conservative) voter but what annoys me is that f*cking Paki we've got in. What good is he? You tell me, you know. He's just wet. F*cking useless."

<h2>No one at the Reform Party was aware of my personal views, says Parker&nbsp;</h2>

Parker released a statement apologising to Nigel Farage and the Reform Party stating that his personal views on the immigration problem were not intended to bring disrepute to the party.

"I would therefore like to apologise profusely to Nigel Farage and the Reform Party if my personal views have reflected badly on them and brought them into disrepute as this was not my intention," he said.

"I offered to help the Reform Party on their canvassing as I believe that they are the only party that offers the UK voter a practical solution to the illegal immigration problem that we have in the UK."

Amid the controversy over Parker's statement, Farage took to his X handle late on Thursday (June 27) and said that he was disturbed by the kind of words that the Reform activist used.

"We now learn that he is an actor by profession. This whole episode does not add up," Farage said on Friday (June 28).

UK PM Rishi Sunak hurt and angry over Reform activist's racial slur, says 'too important not to call out'

London's Metropolitan Police is investigating a small number of bets made on the timing of next week's national elections with at least seven of its police officers identified having placed such wagers.

UK elections: UK Police investigate bets on election timing

Britain's economy bounced back from recession faster than initially reported in the first quarter of this year, according to revised data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released on Friday.

The country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.7 per cent from the previous quarter, surpassing the earlier estimate of 0.6 per cent growth. However, things are still a bit uncertain as the nation gears up for a crucial election next week.

In the second half of 2023, Britain's GDP experienced two consecutive quarters of decline. Despite the recent positive growth, the overall economic outlook remains weak, which presents challenges for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party leading up to the election.

Opinion polls predict that the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, will secure a comfortable victory.

The first-quarter GDP was only 0.3 per cent higher than the previous year, showing some improvement from the initial estimate of 0.2 per cent.

However, when it comes to real household disposable income per person, things weren't as positive. In the first quarter of 2024, it was 0.6 per cent lower compared to the final quarter of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Adam Corlett, a principal economist at the Resolution Foundation, pointed out that income growth has significantly declined during this parliamentary term, making it the worst since the 1950s and the third worst since 1910.

He stressed that addressing this "great living standards slowdown" will be a critical challenge for the next government.

Since the last election, Britain's economy has faced a slew of obstacles, including the lasting impact of the pandemic on the labour force, rising inflation due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and post-Brexit trade issues.

In the first quarter of 2024, the economy grew by 1.8 per cent compared to the final quarter of 2019, making it the weakest performer among the G7 economies, except for Germany. However, France and Japan haven't fared much better.

Despite a solid start to 2024, the outlook remains challenging. The first quarter saw the fastest growth since the last quarter of 2021, and the Bank of England (BOE) estimates a 0.5 per cent GDP growth for the second quarter.

The ONS data offers some relief, showing a 2.4 per cent increase in real household disposable income per person over the past year, driven by rapid wage growth in a tight labour market. GDP per person rose quarterly for the first time in two years, although it's still 0.6 per cent lower than a year ago.

The BOE sees the strong growth in the first half of the year as a rebound from last year's weakness rather than a sustained period of expansion, estimating the underlying growth rate at around 0.25 per cent per quarter.

Government budget forecasters are more optimistic, predicting annual growth to rise from 0.8 per cent this year to nearly 2 per cent in the coming years.

Keir Starmer has criticised these forecasts as overly pessimistic, vowing to achieve the highest sustained growth among the G7 countries through reforms such as easing planning controls to speed up infrastructure development and constructing 1.5 million new homes.

However, Britain hasn't consistently grown faster than 2 per cent annually since before the 2008 financial crisis. Economists attribute this to a slowdown in productivity growth, which has been worsened by weak investment.

Furthermore, ONS data revealed a decline in foreign direct investment in Britain for the fifth time in six quarters during January-March, further highlighting the economic challenges ahead.

UK economy exits recession faster than expected, faces election challenges

Conservative cabinet minister Alister Jack has admitted placing three bets on the date of the general election in the weeks before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak surprise announcement. In a conversation with BBC the minister had claimed that he placed a successful bet that the election would fall between July and September and even made € 2,100. Watch in for more details!

UK general election betting scandal now engulfs Rishi Sunak

With UK general elections just a week away polls conducted between June 21st and 24th indicate labor is maintaining lead with conservatives falling back to equal their lowest ever vote share.

UK elections 2024: Poll survey indicate Labour in lead

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer went head-to-head on Wednesday in their last debate before an election next week, with both launching highly personal attacks over their and their parties' credibility.

With Sunak's Conservatives trailing Labour by around 20 points in the polls, the prime minister went on the attack, accusing Starmer of not being straight with the country on migration, tax and women's rights, and urging voters not to "surrender" to the Labour Party.

Starmer responded that Sunak was too rich to understand the concerns of most ordinary Britons. A snap YouGov poll said the debate had been a tie, with both on 50%.

On immigration, one of the top concerns for British voters, Sunak rejected Starmer's argument that he would seek to return migrants to their home countries, saying many had arrived in Britain from Iran, Syria and Afghanistan.

"Is he going to sit down with the Iranian Ayatollah? Are you going to try and do a deal with the Taliban? It's completely nonsensical. You are taking people for fools."

Polls indicate that Labour's Starmer is on course to win the election with a large majority, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. The two leaders have met at several debates or public sessions with voters, increasingly focusing on who was better suited to lead the country.

Starmer argued the country was exhausted after 14 years of Conservative "chaos", and that he would better understand the challenges of many families who have struggled under soaring inflation and a cost of living crisis.

"Part of the problem we have with this prime minister is that his lived world is millions of miles away from the lived worlds of individuals across the country, the businesses and the families that they're trying to support," he said.

Sunak's campaign has struggled since the beginning. He launched the election in pouring rain in Downing Street and was heavily criticised for failing to attend a D-Day memorial event.

He has also had to contend with a betting scandal after five party officials, including two candidates, were investigated over bets that were placed on the timing of an early election.

Starmer has also faced criticism at public events, being accused by voters of sticking to a script and being robotic, and failing to give enough information on how he would fund much-needed improvements to public services.

One questioner, Robert, seemed to speak for much of the audience when he set out his feelings. He called Sunak a "pretty mediocre prime minister" and said he thought that Starmer's strings were being pulled by senior members of the Labour Party.

"Are you two really the best we've got to be the next prime minister of our great country?" he said, to loud applause. He later told the BBC he had still not decided who to vote for.

UK Elections 2024: Rishi Sunak under fire over betting scandal

Yet another member from United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative party is being investigated by the country’s Gambling Commission for allegedly placing a bet on the general election date.&nbsp;

<h2>Conservative politician under investigation</h2>

Russell George, a Conservative politician in the Welsh Parliament became the fifth Tory member facing inquiries by the Gambling Commission, reported the British media on Wednesday (Jun 26).&nbsp;

George, who represents the same constituency as Sunak’s closest parliamentary aide Craig Williams, was informed by the gambling watchdog that he is under investigation for allegedly placing bets on a July election.&nbsp;

The Tory lawmaker who represents Montgomeryshire in the Welsh parliament said he is stepping back from his role as the Welsh Tories’ deputy chief whip until the investigation is over.&nbsp;

He told the Guardian that he will “cooperate fully” with the investigation but does not want to say anything else as it would “only jeopardise and undermine the investigation.”&nbsp;

Sunak’s Conservative party, which is reportedly headed for a historic loss in the July 4 election, has been engulfed in the betting scandal.&nbsp;

As per BBC, some 15 candidates and officials of the party are being looked at by the Gambling Commission over alleged betting on the timing of the general election.

<h2>Tory lawmaker admits placing bets</h2>

Scottish Secretary and Conservative cabinet minister, Alister Jack admitted placing three bets on the date on which the general elections will be conducted.&nbsp;

He told the BBC that in April he successfully placed bets that the elections will take place between July and September. This was after he had lost similar bets in March.&nbsp;

However, he later denied making such bets and told the British broadcaster that he was joking. The minister who will not be participating in the election after seven years in Parliament also denies breaking any rules.&nbsp;

Jack told the BBC, on Tuesday (Jun 25) that he had placed a $25.3 (£20) bet at five to one. The cabinet minister said he had also “put two bets on in March of £5 ($6.3) each for an election to be held in May and June respectively”.&nbsp;

Sunak made the surprise announcement of holding the general elections in July, on May 22.&nbsp;

“I had no knowledge of the date of the election until the day it was called…I placed no bets in May and am not under investigation by the Gambling Commission,” he told the British broadcaster.&nbsp;

<h2>Labour suspends candidate&nbsp;</h2>

The betting scandal, which was previously limited to the Tories, also affected the opposition Labour Party as it suspended one of its general election candidates, reported the British media, on Tuesday (Jun 25).&nbsp;

Kevin Craig, Labour’s Central Suffolk and North Ipswich candidate, was “administratively” suspended after the party was informed by the Gambling Commission that they are launching an investigation into the contender.&nbsp;

Craig took to social media and released a statement acknowledging as well as apologising for what he called a “huge mistake”. He also said that he would “comply fully” with the investigation.&nbsp;

“A few weeks ago when I thought I would never win this seat I put a bet on the Tories to win here with the intention of giving any winnings to local charities,” the now-suspended Labour party member said.&nbsp;

He added, “While I did not place this bet with any prior knowledge of the outcome, this was a huge mistake, for which I apologise unreservedly,”&nbsp;

“I deeply regret what I have done and will take the consequences of this stupid error of judgement on the chin.”&nbsp;

UK election: Another member of Conservative party under investigation as betting scandals grows

According to media&nbsp;reports, personal protective equipment (PPE) worth an estimated £1.4 billion that the government purchased in a single transaction during the epidemic has been destroyed or 'written off'.

According to data shared by the BBC, Full Support Healthcare, a Northamptonshire-based provider, supplied at least 1.57 billion PPE pieces that would never be utilised.

In April 2020, the business signed a £1.78 billion contract with the government to supply respirators, aprons, face masks, and eye protection. This was the biggest Covid-19 PPE order, accounting for&nbsp;about 13% of the government's entire expenditure, according to the BBC article.

“We know that billions of pounds were wasted during the pandemic on corruption and incompetence by the Conservatives, but this is the worst example I have ever seen," shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said.

“£1.4bn on one contract, paying for PPE that was never used, and Rishi Sunak’s fingerprints are all over it. That is money that could have been used to pay the salaries of 37,000 NHS nurses," he added.

Only 232 million of the 2.02 billion PPE items that Full Support Healthcare supplied have been sent to the NHS or other care settings.

The BBC reports that 825 million more items are categorised as surplus stock, and that around 749 million items have already been burnt or destroyed.

Prior to this, the government predicted that PPE obtained under the deal, valued around £85 million, would not be used.

Since its purchase, the BBC report claimed, at least £100 million more in public funds have been used for the storage and destruction of the surplus stock.

“We do not recognise the £1.4 billion quoted. Our position on PPE stock is set out in the department’s annual accounts as audited by the National Audit Office," a Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) spokesperson said.

Amounts spent on PPE of £13.6 billion were written off, according to DHSC records shared in January. This was because some items were not fit or damaged, while others would not be utilised before they expired.

The government intends to get rid of "nearly all" of the PPE gear that is now kept in warehouses and containers, according to a National Audit Office (NAO) accountability report.

Also read: Watch: Korean Air flight drops 25,000 feet mid-air, passengers share harrowing experiences Prior to this, the government predicted that PPE obtained under the deal, valued around £85 million, would not be used. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has withdrawn Conservative Party support for two parliamentary candidates who are under investigation by the Gambling Commission over allegations of betting on the date of the upcoming general election.

The two candidates, Craig Williams from Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, and Laura Saunders from Bristol North West, are facing scrutiny, for potentially using confidential information to place bets on the election date.

The Labour Party has also suspended one of its general election candidates. Kevin Craig, Labour's candidate for the Central Suffolk and North Ipswich constituency, has been "administratively" suspended by the party pending the outcome of the Gambling Commission's probe.

The Conservative party said, “As a result of ongoing internal inquiries, we have concluded that we can no longer support Craig Williams or Laura Saunders as parliamentary candidates at the forthcoming general election."

“We have checked with the Gambling Commission that this decision does not compromise the investigation that they are conducting, which is rightly independent and ongoing.”

As the nomination process has already concluded, the two candidates will still be listed on the ballot papers as representing the Conservative Party. However, they no longer have the official backing and endorsement of the party leadership.

Sunak confirmed that the party is conducting internal inquiries alongside the Commission's investigation, but stated he is "not aware of any other" Conservative candidates being probed. The controversy arose when one of Sunak's close aides, Craig Williams, allegedly placed a bet on a July polling day before it was announced.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has hinted at potential penalties for young people who refuse to participate in national service.&nbsp;

The leader who faces re-election, during an interview raised the possibility that youngsters in the United Kingdom might face restrictions on "driving licences, or the access to finance, all sorts of other things" if they don't comply with&nbsp;the proposed Conservative policy of compulsory national service for all 18-year-olds.&nbsp;

During a BBC Question Time Election Special, when pressed on whether this could extend to denying bank cards, Sunak responded, "There's lots of different models around Europe."

<h2>Why should the people trust the Conservative Party? Sunak answers</h2>

Guardian reports that the tone of the evening was set by the first question to Sunak, highlighting the quick turnover of five Tory prime ministers, including Liz Truss's brief tenure: "I am asking if you would confess to us tonight even just a small amount of embarrassment to be leading the Conservative party?"

Throughout his session, Sunak faced tough questions on why the public should trust the Conservative Party after 14 years in power.

Regarding NHS waiting lists, Sunak admitted that progress was slower than desired. Sunak said that his government hasn't "made as much progress as I would like" but insisted that things were improving. However, the sceptical audience member who asked this question responded, "No," when asked if they were convinced by Sunak's answer. Big Tory leaders set to lose elections: Polls | 21 of 27 members contesting elections to be routed

The Bank of England kept its main interest rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent. This is a 16-year high rate days before the UK's elections. The prospect of a future rate moved closer as policymakers agreed on the overall thinking of the committee being 'finely balanced.' But more importantly, it shows that the Bank of England will remain on the sidelines until 4th July, the day of elections.

The BOE's monetary policy committee voted 7-2 to keep rates on hold, in line with economists' expectations. The two members who voted against holding rate cuts supported a cut to 5%.

This comes as the UK's inflation returned to its 2 per cent target. Commenting on the same, Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt said, 'Well, core inflation has fallen. Food inflation is now less than 2%. For families worried about the cost of living. Today's very, very good news. And just a year and a half ago we had higher inflation than nearly anywhere in the G7. Now it is lower than nearly any other major economy. That shows that the difficult decisions we've taken have paid off.'

Despite economist expectations, many expected an early rate cut. This can be seen in the sterling falling against the US dollar after the announcement. The BOE vote follows rate-cut announcements by the European Central Bank &amp; the Swiss National Bank. This contrasts with the US Federal Reserve's expected decision to hold on to rate cuts till September. Economists forecast the BOE to execute rate cuts a month before the Fed's expected call.

Irrespective, any rate cut would be too late for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak &amp; the conservative party, which is desperately looking for a boost leading up to the elections.

While Sunak has credited the fall in inflation to his policy reforms since he took office in October 2022, at a time when inflation was at a 41-year high, the Opposition labour party blames the glaring cost of living crisis in the UK on high mortgage rates as a result of economic mismanagement by the ruling government. The Bank of England maintains that this decision would not impact the election outcome.
