Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was given out for obstructing the field during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday (May 12) evening.&nbsp;Jadeja was adjudged out in a rather unconventional manner as he attempted to steal a second run with the match tantalisingly poised for a grandstand finish.&nbsp;

The incident transpired in the 16th over of the match with CSK requiring 22 runs for the win. Facing the penultimate ball of the over bowled by Avesh Khan, Jadeja bunted a short of good length delivery down to third man and called for a double.&nbsp;

However, the fielder arrived on the ball early and released it to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. Jadeja, meanwhile, set off for the second run, only to be sent back by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad who had no interest in taking the extra run. Stranded in the middle of the pitch, Jadeja turned and attempted to&nbsp;make a late dash to the crease.

Samson, upon collecting the ball took a shy at the non-striker's&nbsp;stump but only managed to hit Jadeja who was running in front of the stumps. The umpires went upstairs where the third umpire, after multiple replays, concluded that Jadeja had indeed changed his path deliberately to avoid getting runout.&nbsp;

While it looked like Jadeja had no choice to turn around and run in the trajectory he followed, third umpire Anil Chaudhary asserted that the CSK batter had looked behind for the throw from Samson and adjusted his position accordingly.

Clause 37.1.4 of the Laws of Cricket clearly lays down the conditions in which a batter can adjudged out for obstructing the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“For the avoidance of doubt, if an umpire feels that a batter, in running between the wickets, has significantly changed his direction without probable cause and thereby obstructed a fielder’s attempt to effect a run out, the batter should, on appeal, be given out, obstructing the field. It shall not be relevant whether a run out would have occurred or not," reads the law.&nbsp;

<h2>CSK get over the line</h2>

Although CSK lost Jadeja at a crucial [point in the chase, the pair of Gaikwad and Sameer Rizvi managed to chalk off the remaining 20-odd runs to grant CSK their seventh win of the campaign and keep playoff hopes alive.&nbsp;

Bowling first, CSK restricted RR batters on a paltry total of 141 on what was a slow and tacky Chepauk pitch. Simarjeet Singh was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with figures of 3/26 in his stipulated quota of four overs.&nbsp;

During the run-chase, RR were on course for a win till Samson's stay. However, the keeper-batter fell for a well-made 86 in the 16th over, bowled by Mukesh Kumar. It was a length ball as Samson tried to clear the ropes towards long-on but found&nbsp;fielder Shai Hope in the deep.

Hope did well to complete the catch but it seemed he had touched the ropes at some point. As a result, the on-field umpires took the decision upstairs where third umpire Michael Gough adjudged it out after only one angle of the replay was checked. This led to a long debate between Samson and the umpires as the RR captain made his displeasure known before making the long walk back to the pavilion. For his argument with the umpires, Samson was fined 30 per cent of his match fees by the BCCI.&nbsp;

The BCCI statement read, "Mr Sanju Samson, Captain, Rajasthan Royals has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024. Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding."

At the post-match press conference, RR director of cricket and head coach Kumar Sangakkara opined on Samson's dismissal. He said, "Depends on replays and angles. It was a difficult one for the third umpire to judge. The game was at a crucial stage, so it happens in cricket. Different perspectives. Even if we have any other opinion, we will share it with the umpires and sort it out. I thought irrespective of that dismissal, RR still should have seen the game home."

Talking about the DC-RR game, Delhi rode on Jake Fraser-McGurk's 50, Abhishek Porel's 65 and Tristan Stubbs' 20-ball 41 to post 221/8. In reply, RR lost the plot after losing Samson (86) as they ended up losing by 20 runs. The dashing opener from Australia, however, got out in the very next over when he chipped a full toss ball Ravi Ashwin towards the extra cover region. Nonetheless, his blistering innings gave a nice platform for Delhi to keep charging. The DC batters also obliged, finishing 78/2 in the first six overs before posting 221/8 in 20 overs.

After Fraser-McGurk got out, his opening partner Abhishek Porel kept the innings going. Porel eventually got out after scoring 65 off 36 balls - his first fifty in the IPL. By the time Porel got out DC had scored 144 runs in 12.4 overs. After Porel, Rishabh Pant (15 off 13), Gulbadin Naib (19 off 15) and Tristian Stubbs took DC past 200.&nbsp;

But if I were a mentor or a coach of a franchise, I wouldn't think like that. If my bowler is thinking about saving runs and not taking wickets, he won't find a place in the team."

'Won't be in my team': Sehwag on Ashwin's lack of wickets; says RR star might go unsold in IPL 2025 auction

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul conceded that he was too late to bring on Ravi Bishnoi during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 27. RR chased the relatively-high target of 197 in 19 overs with seven wickets in hand. Leg spinner Bishnoi, who has played all the nine games for LSG this season, bowled just one over in the innings.

"I couldn't find a good time to bring in Bishnoi, and I think it was a bit too late by the time I got him on. Obviously, the plan was to keep him at the back end and make sure if Rovman [Powell] and [Shimron] Hetmyer come in to bat, he's bowled well against them. That was the plan of how we wanted to use our leg spinners," Rahul said after the loss.

The skipper also explained using veteran leggie Amit Mishra, who was playing his first game of the season, ahead of Bishnoi.

"Mishra is an experienced player and we've been thinking about using him from the first game," Rahul said. "Today (Saturday) was the day where we felt like he could be useful against their batters in the middle [order] with how slow he bowls and the slightly larger boundary. That was the idea of using him and we were hoping to use Bishnoi in the latter half."

Despite losing two wickets for 11 runs in the first two overs, LSG did well to post 196/5 in 20 overs, thanks largely to Rahul (48-ball 76) and Deepak Hooda's (31-ball 50) 115-run partnership for the third wicket.

While chasing, RR were given a flying start by openers Jos Buttler (18-ball 34) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (18-ball 24) as the duo added 60 runs for the first wicket inside the powerplay. Speaking of Parag’s maturity as a 22-year-old, Bond said the right-handed batter is extremely talented, reminding him of a young SKY, as fans call Surya when he joined Mumbai Indians a few years ago.

"He sort of reminds me a little bit of Surya [Suryakumar], who came to Mumbai a few years ago," Bond said at the post-match press conference. "He looks like that - he has got extreme talent. He has just matured as a cricketer, even though he is only 22."

Meanwhile, after scoring a mere 68 runs from seven outings last season, Parag went back to the drawing board and worked extra yards to get to the position where he is. Acknowledging Parag’s hard work over the past year, Bond revealed the real reason behind trading Devdutt Padikkal for Avesh Khan was to move Parag up the order and utilise his potential to the maximum.

"He has had an outstanding domestic season, obviously, batting up the order. The trade we made with Devdutt [Padikkal], bringing Avesh [Khan] in, that was to put Riyan up into a position which was probably better suited,” Bond continued.

<h2>‘We are getting the best out of him’</h2>

Bond said Parag shouldn’t just be judged on his previous performances over the past seasons, given he was young and new to high-octane cricket then. The former MI bowling coach, who joined RR ahead of this season, said with the wealth of experience on his back, Parag is delivering for his team and the side is happy to get the best out of him.

“Riyan started so young, you forget that he was 17 or something, playing in one of the toughest spots in a batting line-up: No. 6. You look at the characters, who finish games around the IPL, they are generally pretty experienced guys.”&nbsp;
