Coordinated police raids in 116 countries have netted 500 tonnes of illicit pharmaceuticals available online, including fake cancer medications, counterfeit pain pills and illegal medical syringes, the Interpol police organisation said on Tuesday.

Interpol, based in the French city of Lyon, said an operation codenamed Pangea XI had led to 859 arrests worldwide and the seizure of some $14 million worth of potentially dangerous pharmaceuticals.

"Focusing on delivery services manipulated by organised criminal networks, the operation saw 3,671 web links closed down, including websites, social media pages, and online marketplaces," the organisation said.

The illegal drug trade on the internet - and in particular on what's known as the Dark Web - has been growing in recent years, despite authorities shutting down major market sites, as crime gangs have diversified and sought out new clients online.

It is the second significant drugs bust made by Interpol this month.

The Income Tax department today said that it had unearthed alleged tax evasion and undisclosed income of Rs 195 crore in its first-ever major action against fish processing businesses in coastal Karnataka.

Making details of the recent operation public, the department also said that it had detected the role of a Chinese firm, in some instances, in "paying commission" to local middlemen, outside India.

This was being routed through hawala channels to countries such as Dubai, Oman and Mauritius, and nations in the Middle East and Africa, it said. It said the department has also detected some foreign account holdings and investments after it conducted searches and surveys at a total of 43 premises across five states in the last week in this case.

"The anti-tax evasion action was undertaken against three major groups involved in fish processing business in Mangalore and Udupi regions of Karnataka. The investigation wing of the department based here spearheaded the operation," a senior I-T officer said.

The department, till now, has seized "unaccounted" cash to the tune of Rs 88 lakh as part of these operations that were launched on February 8 by involving over 150 sleuths from its various offices in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubli, Belgaum and Panaji."

The searches also resulted in unearthing of nearly Rs 195 crore undisclosed income so far.

"This (total tax evaded amount) is likely to go up further as the department plans to investigate all related parties and concerns, bank transactions in India and abroad and about investments made in the foreign shores," the department said in a statement. It did not identify the groups.

The department said that during the searches, it was found that "the processing units are, with the help of agents, showing huge bogus creditors in the name of fishermen.

"It was also found that huge cash was paid to the agents in the name of fishermen, violating the provisions of the Income Tax Act," the department said. It said that tax sleuths also noticed that "various benami entities were floated in the name of relatives and employees to make unaccounted investments", in alleged violation of the recently enforced Benami Transactions Act.

The searches, it said, also brought forth some of the other malpractices like "the lab reports were being managed for the quality report on the fish food". "The fish oil is adulterated in a few instances with other lower grade oils and the diesel subsidy is misused by procuring the boats on various benami names, as law regulates only one boat eligible per person for such subsidy," the department said in the statement. It said the processing units were importing fish meal and the same was "re-exported for making false claim of duty draw back."

"The plant and machinery imported were under invoiced, causing loss of customs duty," it said. The department said that sleuths who were part of the raid operations found these firms were maintaining "posh guest houses to extend hospitality to the persons with whom they deal with".

It was also detected, it said, that many agents and processing units are splitting their income in the name of relatives, employees and fictitious entities, in violation of the tax law. "It was also noticed that some of the fishermen are under impression that their income is exempt, like agriculture income, which is not correct," it said.

The department, apart from searching the three unidentified groups, also raided the agents who support them in procuring raw fish. It said the taxman also conducted verification with some of the "end users of the processed food." "A similar modus operandi is believed to be followed by many entities and individuals connected with the fishing industry. All such persons may like to come forward and pay due taxes on their own," it said.

Union Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram's lawyer confirmed on Saturday that nothing was found or seized during the raids carried out at Chidambaram's homes in Delhi and Chennai.

"The ED conducted a raid today. Nothing was found, nothing was seized. The raid concluded at 10.45 a.m," Karti's lawyer Arun Natrajan told media.

He also said this was not an enquiry but just a raid, and kept emphasising that nothing was found or seized.

"It was a raid conducted under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)," said Arun Natrajan.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids at Karti Chidambaram’s premises in New Delhi and Chennai on Saturday morning over his alleged involvement in the INX Media money laundering case.

Enforcement Directorate officials also raided home of former union minister P Chidambaram's Chennai home on Saturday.

The central probe agency had registered a case against him and others in connection with the case in May last year. Karti Chidambaram has now been called for the probe by the agency on January 16.

It had registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), the ED's equivalent of a police First Information Report (FIR), against the accused named in a CBI complaint, including Karti Chidambaram, INX Media and its owners Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.

The agency has alleged that Karti Chidambaram received money from INX Media for using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against it in a case of violation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) conditions to receive investment from Mauritius.

The CBI had also carried out searches at the homes and offices of Karti Chidambaram across four cities for allegedly receiving money from the media firm owned by the Mukerjeas and scuttling a tax probe.

The CBI has said it has also recovered vouchers of Rs 10 lakh which were allegedly paid for the services.

The agency said FIPB approval in the Aircel-Maxis FDI case was granted in March 2006 by the then finance minister even though he was competent to accord approval on project proposals only up to Rs 600 crore and beyond that it required the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

"In the instant case, the approval for FDI of 800 million USD (over Rs 3,500 crore) was sought. Hence, CCEA was competent to grant approval. However, approval was not obtained from CCEA," it alleged.

The CBI had filed the FIR against Karti Chidambaram and the Mukerjeas on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.

Former finance minister P Chidambaram, after the CBI searches on May 16, had issued a strong statement in response to the raids, saying the government was using the CBI and other agencies to target his son.

He also said this was not an enquiry but just a raid, and kept emphasising that nothing was found or seized.

Enforcement Directorate officials also raided home of former union minister P Chidambaram's Chennai home on Saturday

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today carried out raids at Karti Chidambaram’s premises in New Delhi and Chennai over his alleged involvement in the INX Media money laundering case. Fresh summons were issued to Karti Chidambaram, the son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, on Thursday after he failed to show up for the probe in the INX Media case. Enforcement Directorate officials also raided home of former union minister P Chidambaram's Chennai home on Saturday. The ED case pertains to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by then finance minister P Chidambaram. The Chidambarams have denied all the charges made against them. Former finance minister P Chidambaram, after the CBI searches on May 16, had issued a strong statement in response to the raids, saying the government was using the CBI and other agencies to target his son. The Central Bureau of Investigation has raided the Chennai homes of former union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram.

Reports said the raids are linked to the allegation that a Karti Chidambaram company facilitated investment clearances for INX Media in 2008 for kickbacks.

Chidambaram denied the charges and said that FIPB approval was granted in "hundreds of cases."

He also accused the government of using investigating agencies to target his son and his friends to "silence" his voice against the government. He said there were no allegations against the five secretaries who constituted the FIPB, and the officials of the FIPB secretariat.

"All I will say is, I shall continue to speak and write," he said in a statement. "There is no allegation against me," he added.

"The government, using the CBI and other agencies, is targeting my son and his friends..The government's aim is to silence my voice and stop me from writing, as it has tried to do in the cases of leaders of opposition parties, journalists, columnists, NGOs and civil society organisations," the former finance minister said.

The CBI also searched the house of former media baron Peter Mukerjea -- who then owned INX Media -- in Mumbai as part of investigations over alleged favours granted in foreign investment clearance to the company.

Both Peter and his wife Indrani Mukerjea, founders of INX Media, are accused in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case and are lodged in jail in Mumbai. Some clues on the INX Media deal reportedly emerged from investigations into the Sheena Bora murder case when the financial transactions of the Mukerjeas were scrutinized.

The CBI conducted searches at 17 locations across the country, including New Delhi, Gurgaon, Chennai and Chidambaram's hometown of Karaikudi, as part of the probe.

Chidambaram raids: CBI also searches Peter Mukerjea's house

The top bureaucrat of India's southern state of Tamil Nadu has been removed by the government, a day after his residence and properties belonging to his family were raided by taxmen over graft charges.

The police raided properties belonging to P Rama Mohana Rao and his kin due to his suspected close links to mining baron Sekar Reddy.

Rao will be replaced by Girija Vaidyanathan as the chief secretary of Tamil Nadu.

During the day-long raids at 11 different places on Wednesday, police recovered Rs 18 lakh ($44,158) in the new Rs 2,000 currency notes, five kilograms of gold and undisclosed assets worth Rs 5 crore (roughly $736,000).

Investigators raided Rao's house after they found documents from Reddy's house, suggesting a close nexus between the businessman and Rao. They had similarly raided Reddy's house earlier this month and found Rs 132 crore in cash and 177 kilograms of gold stashed away in his residence. It was during the raid that they found documents linking the businessman and the bureaucrat.

“Reddy had direct access to both Rao and a senior politician of the ruling party. We couldn’t raid the politician as we don’t have enough evidence to link him to the illegal transactions,” said another senior official, The Indian Express reported.

Rao is also believed to be close to the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party. He served as the recently-deceased Jayalalithaa's secretary before superseding his seniors to be the chief secretary of the then chief minister.

Nigeria arrests judges in anti-corruption raids

The United Nations has made the first food aid delivery to thousands of people displaced by Boko Haram Islamists in the Nigerian town of Banki, where hundreds have starved to death since March, the UN said on Friday.

Officials from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) delivered 30 tonnes of "various lifesaving food items" transported from neighbouring Cameroon, the OCHA said in a statement. The convoy reached Banki on Thursday and distributed food to the more than 25,000 people in the town, it said.

"An additional 700 kilograms of supplementary food for malnourished children was airlifted from the state capital Maiduguri to Banki on the same day." It was the first aid delivery to the thousands of internally displaced in the northeast region in the last four months following deadly Boko Haram raids.

They have been without food and basic supplies and relied on paltry food handouts from soldiers who have been sharing their rations. Last month a soldier and a vigilante assisting the military in fighting Boko Haram told AFP at least 10 people were dying from hunger every day, highlighting warnings about a food crisis in the Sahel region.

The vigilante said the cemetery in Banki, some 130 kilometres (80 miles) southeast of the Borno state capital Maiduguri, was dotted with 376 graves of displaced people who died of starvation. The soldier said people had been reduced to "walking corpses" facing imminent death without food aid.

When Boko Haram intensified attacks on villages in the area, residents fled to Banki where a military detachment has been based since they retook it in September. The United Nations said in May that 9.2 million people living around Lake Chad, which forms the border of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger, were in desperate need of food.

According to the OCHA aid distribution in Banki and other areas recently liberated by the Nigerian military was "scaling up" but more funds were needed to meet the "lifesaving needs" of people affected by Boko Haram violence in northeast Nigeria.

Only 28 per cent of the $279 million required by the UN to help those affected by the violence has been realised, leaving a $200 million shortfall.

The Borno state government and aid agencies have warned about acute food shortages in the Lake Chad region as a result of seven years of violence.

Boko Haram's insurgency has left at least 20,000 dead in Nigeria and devastated infrastructure in the impoverished northeast. The unrest has also displaced more than 2.6 million. Nigeria's government has been encouraging people to return home since the recapture of swathes of territory lost to the Islamist militants in 2014 but most are still largely reliant on food handouts.

There have been concerns about high death rates from severe acute malnutrition in camps for the internally displaced, while it is feared some inaccessible areas could be suffering from famine. A UN official compared the situation with the crisis in Darfur and South Sudan.
