According to CU Boulder researchers, this process can lead to the creation of novel treatments for someone suffering from human heart conditions like cardiac fibrosis, in which heart tissue gets stiffened.

"Pythons can go months or even a year in the wild without eating and then consume something greater than their own body mass, yet nothing bad happens to them," said senior author Leslie Leinwand.

Leinwand is the chief scientific officer of the BioFrontiers Institute and professor of molecular, cellular and&nbsp;developmental biology&nbsp;at CU Boulder.

"We believe they possess mechanisms that protect their hearts from things that would be harmful to humans. This study goes a long way toward mapping out what those are," Leinwand said.

<h2>Here's how reptiles will help cure human heart</h2>

Leinwand began studying the pythons around two decades ago and her lab is among the few who are looking into non-venomous reptiles to find ways in which human health can be improved.

"Most people who use animal models to study disease and health typically focus on rats and mice, but there is a lot to learn from animals like pythons that have evolved ways to survive in extreme environments," Leinwand said.

In humans, there are two kinds of heart growth, said Leinwand. There are healthy hearts which have chronic endurance and unhealthy ones which have the disease.

To everyone’s surprise and scare, wildlife conservators recently found 500 pounds of pythons all coiled up together in a Florida forest. The pythons were found last month in Collier County and the pile was one of the biggest to have been found in a single day to date.

The pythons were found in three different breeding aggregations or “mating balls”. All the 11 pythons weighing 500 pounds are Burmese pythons. The mating balls of pythons found on February 21 had one female snake with multiple male snakes, as per the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.&nbsp;

The species was brought to Florida back in the 1970s through pet trade and ever since became an “established apex predator across the Greater Everglades ecosystem,” according to the conservancy’s website.&nbsp;

"Burmese pythons are thought to be responsible for a 90% decline in native mammal populations across their established range," the conservancy says.

To deal with deteriorating wildlife conditions in Florida, the conservancy has been working on removing these pythons from the area.&nbsp;

In order to capture them in large quantities, the conservancy uses male snakes that it tags with radio transmitters to lead it to female snakes during the breeding season, Bartoszek said.

Once the conservancy captures the snakes in an effort to suppress the local python population, they are euthanised, and their tissue samples are collected to advance genetic studies.

"We see the remains of white-tailed deer inside of pythons often. This should sound an alarm."

The Feb 21 toll of 500 pounds has been the largest since the Conservancy started its project to suppress the local python population. Since its launch, the conservancy has removed more than 1,300 pythons weighing over 35,000 pounds from an area of about 150 square miles in southwestern Florida, Bartoszek said.

A 7-foot-wide pile of 11 pythons found all coiled up in 'mating balls' in Florida

The residents living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney have been scouring the streets to find two pet pythons who were allegedly left by the ex-boyfriend of a lady living in the area in a “fit of anger”.

The 2.5-metre snakes, which were given the names Mango and Bagel, were allegedly left on the main street in Coogee many days back and have remained on the loose since then.

Taking to local Facebook groups, the owner of the snakes announced a reward for the person who helps her find her pets, which she stated were tame and posed a threat only to the animals.

“My shitty ex threw a tantrum when I broke up with him and dumped my lovely hand-reared pet pythons out in a fit of anger. He dumped them on Mount Street, Coogee, the snakes are domesticated and won’t survive in the wild. I’m really scared for their safety, so please if anyone has seen them let me know," the woman wrote on Facebook.&nbsp;

She added that the snakes were around 2.5 metres long, “quite sweet and don’t bite”. “The brown one is called Bagel and the albino is called Mango,” she added.&nbsp;

The woman was given leads by local residents, as many of them confirmed spotting Mango in a bush on Mount Street on Saturday (Oct 21). “I seen it about 12am,” wrote one user.&nbsp;

“I went out with a couple of sacks and a torch tonight but no luck,” said another user on Thursday evening (Oct 26).&nbsp;

Concerns were expressed by other residents regarding the risk the snakes are likely to pose to the community, especially by a woman who has a “small dog" in her yard.

“On behalf of the neighbourhood … please for the love of god someone find these snakes,” wrote one user, as another added, “I know you said they don’t bite, but I think I’d still faint if I see them near me”.

The Australian Snake Catchers professional reptile handler Sean Cade stated that the safety of the snakes is a bigger concern compared to the threat they pose to the community.

On the basis of the description, Cade stated that the snakes appeared to be like Darwin carpet pythons.

“They should not be out there in the environment, because they’re captive animals, they don’t survive well because they’re not from here. The temperature’s not right, they don’t know how to find food, so it’s quite a precarious situation for the snakes more so than the community," he stated.&nbsp;

Justin Kobylka has been a snake breeder for the past 19 years and specialises in breeding snakes with unique patterns on their bodies, which he sells later at a high price.

This time, he accidentally bred a Lavender Albino Piebald Ball Python which has three smiley faces on its body. This is the only snake in the world to have such a pattern.

He also said that while one in 20 reptiles can have a smiley face pattern on their body, it was the first time that a reptile has three smiley faces.

From predator to prey: Pythons to become a menu item in Florida

Florida has not one but three major problems to deal with right now: The ongoing coronavirus pandemic which has made a comeback in the state, followed by the onset of storm Isaias, and predatory pythons.

Even though the kind of pythons in question - “Burmese pythons” are not naturally occurring in Florida, they recently appeared in large numbers across the Everglades, a national park wetland region in the state, which is described as a grassy, slow moving river.

They reproduce quickly

Pythons reproduce really quickly and then attack other species, obliterating large numbers of them.

To avoid a massacre in the area, wildfire authorities recently undertook a task like no other: removing 5,000 such killer pythons from the Everglades.

This sudden onset of python populations is common, making state intervention a necessity from time to time.

The statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission claims that for every python “eliminated”, an indigenous species is saved.

"Each invasive python eliminated represents hundreds of native Florida wildlife saved," said "Alligator Ron" Bergeron, one of the members of the South Florida Water Management District's governing board.
