Who is Mohammed al-Bashir, the new caretaker prime minister of Syria?

Syrian rebel forces announced on Sunday (Dec. 8) that Damascus was “free" and claimed that President Bashar al-Assad had left the capital, marking the historic end of the Assad family's 50-year rule, hours after the fall of Homs.

“We declare the city of Damascus free from the tyrant Bashar al-Assad,” wrote the Military Operations Command in a post on Telegram.

With the announcement, celebrations broke out in Aleppo and Damascus.

“To the displaced all over the world, a free Syria awaits you,” said the message.

Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali said he was willing to "cooperate" with any leadership that people choose, and is ready for any handover process.

"This country can be a normal country that builds good relations with its neighbours and the world... but this issue is up to any leadership chosen by the Syrian people. We are ready to cooperate with it (that leadership) and offer all possible facilities," said Jalali in a video statement shared on his Facebook account.

“I am in my house and I have not left, and this is because of my belonging to this country,” Jalili said in the statement, made after rebels announced that President Assad had fled from Syria to an unknown destination.

Earlier, the rebels stormed into the capital and took control of the notorious Saydnaya Military Prison, located in the north of Damascus.

“We broke the news to the Syrian people of liberating our prisoners and unchaining them, and announcing the end of the era of injustice in Saydnaya Prison,” said the rebels in the statement.

Now, the rebels are capturing state media offices in Damascus. “The Military Operations Command is moving to seize control of the Radio and Television Building to broadcast the victory announcement over Assad,” read the statement.

The Damascus airport is in chaos amid the storming of the capital by the rebel forces.

No imminent departures were seen on the flight monitoring websites as the airport looked largely unstaffed.

Damascus falls: Syrian rebels announce capital city 'free', PM says ready for handover

Romanians were voting Sunday in the first round of a presidential election amid a surge in inflation and fears over the war in neighbouring Ukraine that could favour far-right leader George Simion.

The vote kicks off two weeks of elections in the poor NATO member country, including a parliamentary vote and a December 8 presidential run-off.

Social Democrat Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu is leading a field of 13 hopefuls in the polls, with about 25 per cent, followed by AUR leader Simion on 15 to 19 per cent.

Simion is targeting people like Rodica, a 69-year-old who was among the first to vote in Bucharest's chilly sunshine. The pensioner, who would not give a family name, was afraid of the Ukraine war and wanted "better living conditions and peace".

The stakes are high in the race to replace President Klaus Iohannis, a liberal and staunch Ukraine ally, who has held the largely ceremonial post since 2014.

Romania, which has a 650-kilometre (400-mile) border with Ukraine, has become more important since Russia invaded its neighbour in 2022.

The Black Sea nation now plays a "vital strategic role" for NATO – as it is home to more than 5,000 soldiers – and the transit of Ukrainian grain, the New Strategy Center think tank said.

Big Trump fan

Simion, 38, is hoping to make a breakthrough as far-right parties across Europe notch up electoral successes.

Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election has further "complicated" Romania's choice, political analyst Cristian Pirvulescu told AFP.

Known for his fiery speeches, Simion – a Trump fan who sometimes dons a red cap in appreciation of his idol – hopes to get a boost from his victory.

Simion opposes sending military aid to Ukraine, wants a "more patriotic Romania" and frequently lashes out against what he calls the "greedy corrupt bubble" in Brussels.

Romania has so far only had "minions and cowards as leaders", he recently said, adding that people "no longer accept to be treated as second-class citizens" in other countries.

Simion has seen his popularity surge by tapping into voter anger over record inflation – 10 per cent last year and 5.5% predicted for 2024 – while promising to deliver affordable housing for all.

Should he reach the second round, analyst Pirvulescu predicts a "contagion effect" that would likely boost his AUR party in the December parliamentary election.

"Romanian democracy is in danger for the first time since the fall of communism in 1989," he added.

Russian 'spies' claim

"I'm really afraid we'll end up with Simion in the second round," 36-year-old IT worker Oana Diaconu told AFP, expressing concern about the far-right leader's unpredictable nature and attacks on the European Union.

The campaign has been marked by controversy and personal attacks, with Simion facing accusations of meeting with Russian spies – a claim he has denied.

Ciolacu has been criticised for his use of private jets.

Despite low popularity ratings, he hopes to win over voters with his promise of "stability" for Romania.

Ciolacu's Social Democratic Party (PSD), which has shaped the country's politics for more than three decades, currently governs in a coalition with the National Liberal Party.

Polling in third place is former journalist Elena Lasconi, who became mayor of the small town of Campulung and head of a centre-right opposition party, who could prove to be a surprise package.

"Our best hope might be to wake up with Lasconi in the second round – she seems to be the most honest candidate," said Diaconu before hopping on a Bucharest tram.

Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (0500 GMT) and close at 9:00 pm, with exit polls expected shortly after.

The results of Pakistan elections 2024 indicate that if free and fair elections had been held, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under Imran Khan would have come to power, but this was not to the liking of the establishment/deep state (Pakistan Army). It therefore skilfully played its cards well in advance by severing the identity of PTI and disqualifying Imran Khan, forcing PTI members to contest independently to ensure that they do not get the reserved seat quota for women and minority candidates and do not reach a position to form the government in spite of semblance of free and fair election. As the results poured in with PTI-backed independents galloping towards majority, some tweaking was allegedly done by establishment to keep them below the threshold level needed to come to power. PTI supporters seem to be protesting in large numbers.

In 2024 elections, the establishment smartly played the game differently to ensure that every stakeholder remains well below the threshold level of claiming simple majority to form the government. This gives opportunity to the establishment to stack numbers for chosen prime minister from behind the scene, thus selecting a puppet PM who can be projected as an elected PM globally, but one who can be displaced by the establishment. The current political scene has been masterminded so that no civilian leader of Pakistan can challenge the power of the Army.

Why Pakistani army remains the power centre in Pakistan?

Pakistan is used to being governed by its army since its existence. Out of 77 years of its independence, Pakistan army has ruled the country directly for significant time and for the remaining period it has ruled through a 'selected' PM.

One of the major reasons has been that with repeated wars since its independence, Pakistan army has been able to sell the narrative that India is its biggest existential threat and army is the only establishment that can save it from such a threat. And so all levers of power must remain with it. The ‘India threat theory’ became more pronounced and convincing to public after humiliating defeat in the 1971 war against India, resulting the country losing East Pakistan as liberated sovereign Bangladesh. Even when not ruling the country directly, the army has always maintained the over-riding authority over nation’s defence, internal security, foreign affairs and more recently over its economy. This will not change in future.

The army’s narrative was backed by exposing corruption of all the politicians at opportune moments as most politicians repeatedly proved their corrupt credentials in public eye, making them unreliable to hold real power. Although army generals are no less corrupt but they have been able to control their own exposure to public, due to absolute hold over all the concerned agencies and establishments, including judiciary.

Why did Pakistan army dump Imran Khan?

During last election Imran Khan appeared to be the candidate 'selected' by the army. Once he challenged it over some of the issues, the clash started. This ultimately led to PTI supporters actually attacking a few army establishments. The deep state thereafter has been trying out various alternatives to keep him out of power, even if it amounts to dry-cleaning Nawaz Sharif of all his previous wrong doings and pushing him as viable option. The Pakistan army is trying to ensure that it doesn’t face any challenge from politicians.

The only challenge which the army faces is from terrorist organisations like the Tehreek-e-Taliban-e-Pakistan (TTP), the Baluchistan Liberation Army. Such groups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan are actively attacking the Pakistan army, and this situation will not alter regardless of the outcome of the elections/political settlement. The election doesn’t bring any hope for improvement of internal security situation.

Possible political outcome

With a hung parliament, despite PTI-backed independent candidates and supporters claiming victory, the PML(N)’s claim of being the largest political party, may well facilitate mustering of the required numbers by encouraging the other political parties and some independents to join. The recent statement of Pakistan army chief indicates a guideline for political parties to get together to form the government. There may be some adjustments, permutations and a combination of power-sharing among the parties concerned, but a weak democratic government at the mercy of the Pakistan army will emerge to face an unprecedented economic and political crisis.

In case the puppet regime fails to resolve the crisis, becomes unpopular or follows the narrative uncomfortable to the army (like improving relations with India or hindering smooth operations of terrorists), the army will have a popular leader like Imran Khan in reserve. One whose image can easily be dry-cleaned (as has been done in case of Nawaz Sharif) and be reinstated through non confidence motion at appropriate time.

Why USA and China ignore democratic backsliding in Pakistan?

Pakistan's strategic location and it’s control over some of the terrorist groups is still important for United States, in case it has to launch any operation against any terror organisation like Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. USA has supported dictatorship in Pakistan historically to suit its strategic aims in Af-Pak Region and it is used to dealing with Pakistan army directly, closing its eyes to sham democratic credentials of Pakistan. The non-committal statements from US State Department indicate that whichever is the party in power, US will work with it as it knows that finally it will deal with the army/establishment, which will not change. China too needs the strategic space in Pakistan for its China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects and finds the army a useful tool as nuisance creator to India through proxy war. Both, USA and China, do not see any political leadership stable enough for long-term engagement and prefer to work with Pakistan army, whom they see as relatively reliable. Pakistan army will continue to ignore international criticism about its treatment to PTI and Imran Khan, with support of P5 member like China.

How Does it Impact India?

The biggest hindrance to peaceful engagement between India and Pakistan is the latter's support to the terror groups against India and its proxy war in Kashmir. All these are part of deliberate strategy of Pakistan army. Strained relations with India increase its relevance in public perception, giving it an excuse to retain all levers of power. The election results and possible political outcome does not change the pivotal role of Pakistan army in any of these matters. In view of that the election outcome does not bring any hope of better relations between India and Pakistan, unless the dire economic and internal situation in Pakistan forces the army to change its stance towards India. Irrespective of the outcome of government formation, Pakistan is likely to remain politically and economically unstable, which is not a good news for the region.

The results of Pakistan elections 2024 indicate that if free and fair elections had been held, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under Imran Khan would have come to power, but this was not to the liking of the establishment/deep state (Pakistan Army).

Pakistan elections 2024: Army modifies methodology of selecting PM

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed Morgan McSweeney as his new Chief of Staff following the resignation of Sue Gray. McSweeney, a long-time political strategist, has been a key adviser to Starmer, playing a crucial role in shaping Labour's campaign strategy. His appointment comes as Starmer seeks to strengthen his leadership team ahead of the next general election, focusing on building a clear policy agenda and enhancing Labour's electoral prospects.

Japan’s ruling party picked Shigeru Ishiba as its next leader, positioning an advocate of an “Asian NATO” to become prime minister in a move that risks further increasing tensions with China. Ishiba, a 67-year-old party veteran who has served in several senior roles including defense minister, beat Sanae Takaichi in a run-off for the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party, helped by strong support among rank-and-file members.

Japan New PM Plan Of 'Asian NATO' To Deter China's Growing Aggression

Shigeru Ishiba has secured victory in the leadership election of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and is poised to become the next prime minister. The 67-year-old former defense minister triumphed in a closely fought race on Friday, defeating 63-year-old Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a run-off after none of the nine candidates achieved a majority in the initial round of voting earlier in the day. Watch in for more details!

Japan: Shigeru Ishiba Set To Become Japan's Next PM After Winning Ruling Party Leadership Election

Japan could get its first woman or youngest-ever prime minister on Friday when the ruling party holds a leadership vote described as the most "unpredictable" in many years.

A record nine candidates are in the running after the long-powerful factions of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) disbanded earlier this year over a funding scandal.

Because the conservative LDP holds a parliamentary majority, the winner is certain to become prime minister, and will likely call a snap election to shore up their mandate.

Three frontrunners have emerged in polling: former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba, 43-year-old Shinjiro Koizumi – the son of a popular ex-premier – and nationalist hardliner Sanae Takaichi, who would be the first woman in the job.

Whoever wins must face down regional security threats, from an increasingly assertive China and its deepening defence ties with Russia to North Korea's banned missile tests.

At home, the leader will be tasked with breathing life into the economy, as the central bank moves away from decades of monetary easing that has slashed the value of the yen.

In debates and campaigning, many candidates "have claimed that 'I'm the one who can handle Trump' or 'I'm the one who can stand up to China'", Jeffrey J Hall, a lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies, told AFP.

But there are significant differences in their approach to such issues, and although some of the nine have "no hope whatsoever", the race remains "a toss-up".

"This is the most unpredictable that an LDP election has been in many years," Hall said.

- 'Fair and square' Ishiba -

LDP presidents are in office for three years and can serve up to three straight terms. Unpopular Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is not running for re-election.

With the factions dissolved, it's unlikely that any one candidate will win enough votes – split between lawmakers and rank-and-file party members – to win outright.

That makes a run-off between two top candidates the most likely scenario, with the winner announced Friday afternoon.

Ishiba, 67, has come close to the top job before, including in 2012 when he lost to arch-rival Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest serving leader who was later assassinated.

The military model-maker with an affinity for 1970s pop idols once alienated party veterans with his "outspoken criticism of LDP policies under Abe", said Yu Uchiyama, a political science professor at the University of Tokyo.

But this time, "with public discontent with the LDP rising, the tide is in favour of Ishiba and his 'fair and square' attitude," Uchiyama told AFP.
Economic Security Minister Takaichi, 63, is "the most conservative of the top three" and "not the candidate that feminists would want", Hall said.

She is opposed to changing the law to allow separate surnames for married couples, and regularly visits Tokyo's Yasukuni war shrine –a flashpoint in relations with South Korea and China.

However, Naofumi Fujimura, a professor at the Graduate School of Law at Kobe University, said that while for now she needs the support of the LDP's right-wingers, she could perhaps be "more centrist, or more pragmatic" as prime minister.

- Koizumi offers 'rejuvenation' -

Photogenic former environment minister Koizumi would be Japan's youngest ever prime minister, but critics – including his own father, former premier Junichiro Koizumi – say he is too inexperienced to lead the country.

Keen surfer Koizumi "best personifies the idea of rejuvenation and change for the LDP" among the frontrunners, but LDP voters could think he "lacks stability", Uchiyama said.

The other six candidates include reformist Taro Kono, 61, and Toshimitsu Motegi, dubbed the "Trump whisperer" for his handling of the former US president in tough trade talks.

Also running are chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi and Takayuki Kobayashi, the only other candidate under 50 – seen as a wild card by some experts

Whoever emerges victorious on Friday will be formally elected by parliament on October 1.

The LDP has governed Japan almost uninterrupted for decades, with the main opposition parties rarely seen as viable alternatives.

During his term, Kishida has taken steps to double Japan's defence spending, opening the door for military exports as the LDP seeks to revise Japan's pacifist post-war constitution.

He welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to a G7 summit in Hiroshima, and has strengthened Japan's often testy ties with its neighbour South Korea.

But his rule was also tarnished by scandals, voter anger over rising prices and sliding poll ratings.

A standoff erupted between the Indian government and West Bengal state government on Saturday (Jul 27) during the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. NITI Aayog is the public policy think-tank of the government of India and its annual meeting focuses on making the country a developed nation by 2047. Niti Aayog council includes the PM, state chief ministers, lieutenant governors of Union Territories, and several Union ministers.

West Bengal CM walks out of the meeting

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee walked out of the meeting saying her mic was muted and she was allowed to speak only for five minutes while the allies of PM Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were given more than 10 minutes.

"I was allowed to speak only for five minutes. Chandrababu Naidu was given 20 minutes to speak. The chief ministers of Assam, Goa, Chhattisgarh spoke for 10–12 minutes. I registered my protest and came out," the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said.

She alleged that her mic was muted when she raised the issue of lack of funding from the central government.

"I was talking about central funds not being given to West Bengal, this is when they muted my mic," the West Bengal CM said.

Government rebuffs claim

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman dismissed Mamata's claims while talking to news agency ANI.

“CM Mamata Banerjee attended the NITI Aayog meeting. We all heard her. Every CM was given the allotted time and that was displayed on the screen which was present before every table...She said in the media that her mic was put off. That is completely false. Every CM was given their due time to speak...It's unfortunate that the chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee has claimed that her mic was switched off which is not true...She should speak the truth behind this rather than again build a narrative based on falsehood,” the finance minister said.

Notably, Mamata was the only opposition leader present at the meeting. Other opposition leaders had boycotted the meeting citing the "discriminatory" Union Budget. The opposition has alleged that the Budget favoured Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, states ruled by the NDA allies JD(U) and TDP.

India's image in Canada has taken a hit as positive views related to the country dropped by 11 points since March 2023, according to new data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute.

The Angus Reid Institute was founded in October 2014 by pollster and sociologist Dr Angus Reid and provides public opinion polling among other services. Some reports suggest that the non-profit is biased in its reporting.

In the latest report on India-Canada, the institute suggested that only 33 per cent of Canadians have a favourable opinion of India while a majority of 54 per cent view it unfavourably.
