Manipur police said that a big group of women-leading protesters&nbsp;confronted the Indian Army and forcefully released 11 miscreants after they were detained with arms and ammunition in the northeastern state's&nbsp;Bishnupur district on Tuesday (April 30).&nbsp;

The&nbsp;police said that a unit of the Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army halted and arrested&nbsp;the armed troublemakers wearing police uniforms.

According to PTI news agency, quoting unidentified officials, the army was conducting patrols in the Kumbi region when they intercepted two SUVs.

“On seeing the Army personnel, the occupants of the two vehicles fled, leaving behind their arms,” PTI quoted an official as saying.

The Manipur Police reported that soldiers from the Mahar Regiment confiscated three AK rifles (along with seven magazines and 210 rounds of ammunition), five INSAS rifles (with 13 magazines and 260 rounds of ammunition), two SLR rifles (including 9 magazines and 180 rounds of ammunition), two hand grenades, bulletproof jackets, and various other items from the possession of the troublemakers.

The police took them into custody. And then protesters ambushed them.

“A group of womenfolk started gathering and blocked the road so as to prevent the movement of security forces," the police said in a statement.

"On being informed by the Army about the developing situation, District Police rushed to the spot. On reaching, it was informed by the army personnel that the 11 persons have been snatched by the womenfolk during aggressive confrontation with them despite their best efforts,” it said.

“Displaying dogged determination and intent, teams of both Manipur Police and the Indian Army were successful in breaking through a number of obstacles/ barriers created by hostile sympathisers and reach out to the the teams at Kumbi PS. The recovered weapons and ammunitions were kept in safe custody. The mob was later dispersed and the situation was brought under control. Necessary legal action is being taken up,” it added.

Meanwhile, several videos have appeared on social media showing hundreds of women blocking the road, preventing the Army convoy from departing the area. Allegedly, the Army is seen firing into the air to disperse the crowd.

"Confiscating weapons from village volunteers guarding a fringe area like Kumbi leaves us exposed to possible attacks by armed militants from adjacent hill areas of Churachandpur district," Jaya Khagenbam, a leader of the protesters, told PTI.

"Security forces should remember that their inability to protect villages located at the periphery of the Valley led to the emergence of the village volunteers," she added.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Police clarified that the individuals involved in the incident were not connected to the events of April 27 in Naranseina, where two CRPF personnel lost their lives.

“Further, there are reports of rumours on social media by certain handles linking the above miscreants with the incident of 27th April, 2024 at Naranseina wherein 02 (two) CRPF personnel were martyred. Both the incidents are separate and investigation is going on and no linkages with the Naranseina incident have been found till now,” it said in the statement.

The two officers were seen interacting with Young for almost a minute. One officer can be seen standing at her car's door and continuously asking her to "get out of the car".

"For what?" responded the woman twice, further saying, "I'm not going to do that." One police officer, who is in front of the car and has placed his left hand on the hood, takes out the gun with his other hand. 
 
"Are you going to shoot me?," the woman says moments before the shot is fired at her and the officer quickly moves away from the path of the car. Officers can then be seen breaking the car's window after it rolls into the brick wall near the store's entrance.

<h2>Police fail to save the mother and her unborn child</h2>

The police officers claimed that they tried to perform medical aid, however, they failed to save the mother of two and her unborn child after the shooting. 
 
"This was a tragedy. Ms Young's family is understandably very upset and grieving," said Blendon Police Chief John Belford in a statement on Friday. "While none of us can fully understand the depths of their pain, all of us can remember them in our prayers and give them the time and space to deal with this heartbreaking turn of events,” he added.

Both the officers seen in the video, who have not been identified, were placed on administrative leave after the incident of shooting. The officer who was present near the window of the car came back to duty, however, the one who fired a shot at her remains on leave. 
 
The family of Young first saw the video before it was released on Friday. The family, in a statement, said that the shooting "is clearly a criminal act" and was "avoidable". 
 
Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been asked by the Blendon Township police department to investigate the shooting.

In her complaint raised on Twitter tagging the police, the woman, who is supposedly from different ethnicity, alleged that the cop misbehaved with her when was strolling at a beach with her friend at Sea Shell Avenue in southern Chennai city.

The woman claimed that was pulled off by the cop because she was present at the beach beyond the stipulated timings.

"The most disrespectful thing he told is 'Go and roam in North India after 10 o’clock',” the woman in her Twitter post said.

“Being a northeastern, how come I am being tagged as North Indian???? Is it because I can’t speak Tamil language?" reads her post.

In her post, she further claimed that the police officer tried to detain her and threatened to file a false case against her when she tried to talk back.

“When I was replying him back, he threatened me to take me in his vehicle and file a case against me. Literally, why? And, there was no notice displayed about the timing for sitting on beach. Please train them to behave nicely at least. I’m not a criminal,” she said in her post.

Replying to her from its official handle, Tamil Nadu Police DGP Sylendra Babu expressed regret at the incident and assured to punish the officer.

"An enquiry is ordered and action as deemed fit would be taken" read the response.

Notably, this incident of alleged misbehaviour from the cops comes at a time when there has been a spurt in gruesome crimes against women and young girls across Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

The Queens district attorney’s office asked a judge Monday to toss out 60 criminal cases that relied on work by three former New York Police Department detectives who were later convicted of perjury, sexual assault or official misconduct.

The move is part of the office’s review of cases that involved police officers who had committed crimes or workplace misconduct and who had served as “essential witnesses” in Queens prosecutions, District Attorney Melinda Katz said.

“We cannot stand behind a criminal conviction where the essential law enforcement witness has been convicted of crimes which irreparably impair their credibility,” Katz said.

The office’s review stems from a letter sent in May by the Legal Aid Society and other legal defence and civil rights organisations to the city’s five district attorneys and the special narcotics prosecutor, identifying 20 police officers who had been convicted of crimes and two others who had engaged in work-related misconduct. The letter asked the offices to erase convictions in which the officers played a role.

The Brooklyn district attorney’s office was reviewing the Legal Aid letter as part of its broader efforts to examine problematic convictions, a spokesperson, Oren Yaniv, said. “Our review is nearing its end, and we expect to dismiss a number of cases,” Yaniv said.

A spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney’s office said a review of cases involving the identified police officers was ongoing, and the Bronx district attorney’s office said cases involving seven police officers were under review.

A representative for the Staten Island district attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

After receiving the letter, Katz, who took office in January 2020, launched a review of the borough’s cases. It found that 10 officers on the list had played roles in Queens criminal cases, Katz said Monday, adding that hundreds of cases remained under review.

In a hearing Monday afternoon in Queens Supreme Court, Justice Michelle Johnson vacated 59 convictions and cleared one person of pending charges and a warrant issued for an arrest. Most of the cases were misdemeanours or violations, but seven were felonies.

Some of the people cleared Monday had served prison terms, while others had lost jobs and licenses; one man was still on parole at the time of his dismissal, and one woman had died, Legal Aid Society lawyers said.

Of the 60 cases, 34 were based on the work of former detective Kevin Desormeau, a street cop once held in high regard, who in 2018 was convicted of lying about witnessing a Queens drug deal that had not taken place. At the sentencing, Justice Michael Aloise gave Desormeau no jail time and criticized the prosecutor’s office for its conduct during the former officer’s trial.

Desormeau later pleaded guilty in Manhattan to separate charges that he fabricated facts concerning a 2014 gun possession arrest in Washington Heights, a case that also led to charges against his former partner on the force, Sasha Cordoba.

The Queens district attorney asked Monday to dismiss 20 cases involving Cordoba, who pleaded guilty in Manhattan in 2018 to perjury and official misconduct charges in connection with the gun possession arrest. Cordoba was also convicted of a misdemeanour in the Queens drug sale case, but the judge threw out her verdict, citing lack of evidence.

Six of the cases dismissed Monday stemmed from the work of former Queens detective Oscar Sandino, who pleaded guilty in 2010 to federal civil rights charges related to the sexual assault of people in custody. In one instance, Sandino sexually abused someone under arrest in the bathroom of the 110th Precinct in Queens, the district attorney’s office said.

“Criminal convictions largely based on the work of corrupt former or active NYPD officers who engaged in misconduct while executing their duties flies in the face of oaths officers take to protect and serve New Yorkers,” said Elizabeth Felber, director of the Legal Aid Society’s wrongful conviction unit. “This unconscionable and inexcusable behavior corrodes the public’s trust in law enforcement,” she said.

The review in Queens is part of a broader movement to reassess criminal cases and convictions, some decades old, over concerns about official misconduct and perjury by police officers.

In April, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez asked the court to dismiss 90 convictions — nearly a third of them felonies — that was based on the work of a former narcotics detective, Joseph E. Franco, who had been charged with perjury and other offences in connection with his undercover work and testimony for prosecutors.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office had charged Franco in 2019 with 26 criminal counts, saying he had lied about witnessing drug buys. The Manhattan and Bronx district attorney’s offices, as well as the special narcotics prosecutor, have moved to vacate scores of convictions in which Franco was involved.

Franco was fired by the Police Department in April 2020. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

Franco was fired by the Police Department in April 2020. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

The victim, a 47-year old farmer, died on Wednesday, after being beaten with a cane stick&nbsp; by Periyasamy in public at the border checkpoint on Tuesday evening.

It is said that the victim had gone with his friends to the nearby Kallakurichi district to purchase liquor. When stopped by the cops, the farmer who was in an inebriated state, is said to have argued with the cops.&nbsp;

In the clip of the brutal attack, Murugesan and his friends are seen pleading with the policeman, who continued to thrash the man indiscriminately, while other cops in the vicinity looked on.

Apparently, the policeman stopped raining blows with the cane stick only after the victim fell unconscious.&nbsp;
