"In the last four years, we have cancelled around 6 crore fake ration cards, gas connections and scholarships. We plugged this leakage, saving crores of money," said Prime Minister Modi while addressing a public meeting in Odisha.

The Prime Minister said that projects worth more than Rs 1,500 crore in sectors like education, connectivity, culture and tourism, that were kickstarted today will not only spur the growth of Odisha but entire eastern India."

In a month, more than Rs 20,000 crore of development projects have been either inaugurated or initiated in Odisha," he said.

The Prime Minister also said that Odisha got more than Rs 4000 crore due to Centre's decision to create the District Mineral Fund. He said the amount would help in the development of the tribal areas where mining is carried out.

"Unfortunately the state government has not been able to spend the money for the welfare of tribals," he added.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Balangir-Bichhupali railway line.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a permanent building at the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Sonepur and inaugurated new Passport Sewa Kendras at Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapur, Puri, Phulbani, Bargarh and Balangir.

Apart from inaugurating the railway line, the Prime Minister launched six Ministry of Railways projects, including the launch of 813 kilometres of electrified lines from Jharsuguda to Vizianagaram and from Sambalpur to Angul.

Prime Minister Modi also dedicated a Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) Jharsuguda, which will facilitate Import/Export and Domestic Cargo, including Private Freight Traffic (PFT).

This is the Prime Minister's third visit to Odisha from the past month.

On his first visit, to Khurdha in December, the Prime Minister launched Rs 14,523 crore worth projects in the state and during his second visit on January 5, he inaugurated projects worth Rs 4,733 crores, taking the total amount of projects in Odisha to Rs. 20,801 crore in the past month.

The Centre has spent a total of Rs 364 crore since 2014 in advertising the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet projects that aims to improve the child sex ratio, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said Friday.

The government spent Rs 18.91 crore in 2014-15, Rs 24.54 crore in 2015-16, Rs 29.79 crore in 2016-17 and Rs 135.71 crore in 2017-18, he said.

The BBBP scheme was launched by the prime minister in January 2015 in Haryana's Panipat. It focuses on districts with the worst child sex ratio (CSR) as per the 2011 Census.

The key elements of the scheme include nation-wide awareness, advocacy campaign, and multi-sectoral action, Kumar said.&nbsp;

The multi-sectoral actions include effective enforcement of Pre Conception &amp; Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&amp;PNDT) Act, pre-natal or post-natal care of a mother, to improve enrolment of girls in schools, community engagement or training or awareness generation, he said.

Since 2018-19, all 640 districts (as per census 2011) of the country have been covered under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, Kumar said.&nbsp;

"Out of 640 districts, 405 are covered through multi-sectoral intervention and media and advocacy while 235 districts covered through alert media and advocacy outreach," he added.&nbsp;

PM Modi to visit Varanasi, Ghazipur today

The first passenger train passing through the Bogibeel bridge will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, marking the opening of the country's longest rail-cum-road bridge.

The Tinsukia-Naharlagun Intercity Express will run five days a week. The 4.9-km bridge will cut down the train-travel time between Tinsukia in Assam to Naharlagun town of Arunachal Pradesh by more than 10 hours.

"It will take five-and-a-half hours compared to the 15-20 hours it currently takes. Passengers had to change trains multiple times and take a long-winded route," Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson Nripen Bhattacharya said.

The 14-coach chair-car train will depart from Tinsukia in the afternoon. It will leave from Naharlagun the next morning, the spokesperson said.

The Bogibeel bridge connects the south bank of the Brahmaputra river in Assam's Dibrugarh district with Silapathar in Dhemaji district, bordering Arunachal Pradesh.

The bridge and the train will be a boon for the people of Dhemaji as major hospitals, medical colleges and airport are in Dibrugarh, the third-largest city in the Northeast. It will also help the people of Itanagar as it is just over 15 km from Naharlagun, the spokesperson added.

Modi will flag off the train after inaugurating the Bogibeel bridge on December 25, the birth anniversary of late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and observed as the 'Good Governance Day' by the Centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday said the Centre was committed to making a law on triple talaq despite facing "hurdles" from "hardliners" and opposition parties.&nbsp;

He also asserted that women were the biggest beneficiaries of the many schemes launched by his government.

"Nearly all big schemes are anyhow empowering women. The government has framed new schemes and rectified existing ones. Through the schemes and laws, we are moving towards women empowerment today. This has created trust," Modi said.

Speaking at the fifth national convention of BJP Mahila Morcha, he targeted the Congress, saying women's welfare was never a priority of the previous governments.

 
The prime minister also talked about his government's resolve to make the law on triple talaq.&nbsp;

"Despite all hurdles and opposition from hardliners and opposition parties, the government is committed to making a law on triple talaq," Modi said.

The Lok Sabha is expected to take up the triple talaq Bill for discussion on December 27 during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

The government had issued an ordinance in September pending the passage of the Bill in a revised form.

The current Bill will supersede a previous Bill passed in the Lower House and held up in Rajya Sabha. In view of opposition to the Bill from various parties, the government has cleared some amendments, including introduction of a provision of bail for husbands who give instant triple talaq.

"We are committed so that Muslim women can get rid of a big life threat. No just that. In order for Muslim women to go to Haj (pilgrimage), we have removed the clause that men need to accompany them", he said.

The prime minister said the women of the country have given the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the opportunity "with great hope and trust after trying all other options".

"After exploring various options in the last six to seven decades, the people of the country -- our sisters and daughters -- reposed faith in the BJP. Previous governments did not do anything to provide even basic facilities to women and just made promises," Modi said.

Those who ruled India for 60-70 years failed to provide basic things for women's welfare, he said, adding the previous governments just kept waiting for the right time to usher in social reforms and change in attitude towards women.

"The country knows very well the approach and thinking of those who could not even have it as their priority to provide basic facilities to women in all these years. The country knows what their intentions and thoughts were.

"The political party that remained in power since decades only waited for time to come to bring about social changes and thinking regarding women. They were busy making promises", he said, targeting the Congress.

In the last four years, society's view towards girl child and women empowerment has undergone a positive change, the prime minister said.&nbsp;

"For the first time, the government's flagship schemes are focusing on women," he said while referring to programmes like Swachh Bharat programme, Ujjwala scheme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), wherein 75 per cent owners of the houses are women.

"Eighteen crore of the total Jan Dhan bank accounts belong to women," he said, adding that the male-female sex ratio has also improved, especially in Haryana, which has had a dubious record in the past.

Modi said the cabinet committee on security affairs for the first time included two women. "Besides, women have been inducted as fighter pilots in Air Force. There is a woman officer wing in the Navy. The government passed anti-trafficking bill and capital punishment will be given to rape convicts of minors," he said.

Modi added that the country's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had initiated women's empowerment as president of the Ahmedabad Municipality before Independence.

He said the BJP enjoys confidence of the people of the country from panchayat-level to Parliament.

Modi said his government was taking steps to empower women through schemes launched in the last four-and-half years.

"Since the last many decades, you have struggled with women-related issues. This government is working (as it is) guided by the expression of this struggle. This is being expressed in the government's programmes since the last 4.5 years," he said.

He said the women's participation in decision-making process in the country has gone up due to the efforts of his government.

"Schemes such as Swachh Bharat Mission targeted women by providing them toilets or 'ijjat ghars' where they can go freely without fear of being stalked," the prime minister said.

Modi also said that his government brought down inflation, which came as a "relief to women, making it easier for them to manage the households".

The PM praised the BJP government in Haryana for improving the gender ratio, saying it was the result of the success of the 'Beti bachao, Beti padhao' initiative.

He also lauded the erstwhile Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh for ensuring that courts pass orders in two to three months in cases of rape of minor girls.&nbsp;

Government committed to making law on triple talaq: PM Modi

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) are one entity and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the undisputed leader of all the three political parties.

"BJP, TRS and AIMIM are in an alliance and are a single party and Modi is their leader who stays in Delhi," said Ghulam Nabi Azad.

"AIMIM supports BJP in Karnataka and Maharashtra by contesting only in minority areas. TRS also supports BJP in Telangana and in the centre. TRS, BJP and AIMIM pretend that they are against each other but actually they are in an alliance," he said.

"Congress party has done an open alliance with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Communist parties in the Telangana," said Azad.

He expressed confidence that Congress will form the governments in all the five poll-bound states of Mizoram, Madhya-Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

"Congress is already running the government in Mizoram and it will get back to the power there again. While in rest of the four states also Congress will defeat the rivals," said Azad.

Azad further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi who failed in bringing back the black money, sent white money out of the country along with embattled business men Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya.

Azad also slammed Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and said, "Rao is anti-education. out of 216 engineering colleges, he closed 121 as a result only 25 are running in Telangana now."&nbsp;

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) are one entity and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the undisputed leader of all the three political parties. "BJP, TRS and AIMIM are in an alliance and are a single party and Modi is their leader who stays in Delhi," said Ghulam Nabi Azad. "AIMIM supports BJP in Karnataka and Maharashtra by contesting only in minority areas. TRS also supports BJP in Telangana and in the centre. TRS, BJP and AIMIM pretend that they are against each other but actually they are in an alliance," he said. "Congress party has done an open alliance with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Communist parties in the Telangana," said Azad. He expressed confidence that Congress will form the governments in all the five poll-bound states of Mizoram, Madhya-Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. "Congress is already running the government in Mizoram and it will get back to the power there again. While in rest of the four states also Congress will defeat the rivals," said Azad. Azad further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi who failed in bringing back the black money, sent white money out of the country along with embattled business men Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya. Azad also slammed Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and said, "Rao is anti-education. out of 216 engineering colleges, he closed 121 as a result only 25 are running in Telangana now."
