India’s major opposition political parties have opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "One Nation One Election" (ONOE) proposal, calling it non-practical and non-pragmatic. The proposal was green-lighted by PM Modi-led Union Cabinet on Wednesday (Sep 18). The chief of Congress, India’s principal opposition party, termed the move "an attempt to divert the attention of the public".

"When elections come, they (the BJP) are not getting any issues to raise. So they divert attention from real issues," said party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Later in a post on X, Kharge said the proposal was against the Constitution. "This is against the Constitution, this is contrary to democracy, this is against federalism. The country will never accept this," he wrote.

It is to be noted that once implemented, the ONOE scheme would see simultaneous Lok Sabha (parliamentary) and Assembly elections. The plan is backed by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the country’s top court, the Supreme Court of India (SC).

Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that the BJP-led NDA government will implement the 'One Nation, One Election' policy in its current tenure. Addressing a press conference here to mark the 100 days of the third consecutive term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah said, "We plan to implement'One Nation, One Election' in the present tenure of this government." Shah was flanked by Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw at the press conference. In his Independence Day address last month, the prime minister had made a strong pitch for 'One Nation, One Election', contending that frequent polls were creating hurdles in the country's progress. "The nation has to come forward for 'One Nation, One Election'," Modi had said in his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Also read: Arvind Kejriwal resigns as Delhi CM, Atishi stakes claim to form government 'One Nation, One Election' was one of the key promises made by the BJP in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections. A high-level panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind had in March this year recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days. Separately, the Law Commission is likely to recommend holding simultaneous polls for all three tiers of government -- Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats – starting in 2029 and a provision for a unity government in cases such as a hung house or when a no-confidence motion is passed. The Ram Nath Kovind-led committee has not specified any period for rolling out simultaneous polls. It has proposed creation of an 'Implementation Group' to look into the execution of the panel's recommendations. The panel recommended as many as 18 constitutional amendments, most of which will not need ratification by the state assemblies. However, these would require certain Constitution amendment bills that would need to be passed by the Parliament. The president of India's Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge has raised the matter of highly "objectionable” and inappropriate comments made by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) against Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the lower house of Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha), Rahul Gandhi, over his controversial remarks made during his recent US trip, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (September 17).

Kharge urged the prime minister to take action against BJP leaders who have used offensive language targeting Rahul Gandhi. He added that strict legal measures should be enforced to curb such behaviour. Kharge wrote to the Prime Minister in Hindi, stating, "I want to draw your attention to an issue that is directly related to democracy and the Constitution. You must be aware that a series of extremely objectionable, violent, and rude statements are being made against the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.” Expressing shock over the harsh language used by BJP leaders and their allies, Kharge said, “The world is shocked that the Minister of State for Railways in the central government, a minister from BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, is calling the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha ‘number one terrorist’.” Kharge was referring to comments made by junior railways minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, and UP minister Raghuraj Singh. Kharge further added, “An MLA from a party that has ties with your government in Maharashtra is announcing a reward of ₹11 lakh to the person who ‘cuts off the tongue of the Leader of the Opposition and brings it to him’. A BJP leader and former MLA in Delhi is threatening to make his ‘fate like his grandmother’." Kharge referred to Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad’s announcement of a reward for anyone who cuts off Gandhi’s tongue in response to his views on reservations, and BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marwah’s remarks. Also read: Shiv Sena MLA offers Rs 11 lakh to ‘cut off’ Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s tongue after US visit comments In his letter, Kharge said that India is globally known for its principles of non-violence, harmony, and compassion. "Our heroes established these as standards in politics. Gandhi ji had made these standards an important part of politics during the British rule itself. After independence, there has been a long history of respectful disagreements between the ruling party and the opposition in the parliamentary arena. This has worked to enhance the prestige of Indian democracy," he wrote. He added that Congress leaders and workers are deeply troubled by the current situation. He said, "Due to such hate-mongering forces, Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi had to sacrifice their lives. This political behaviour of the ruling party is an example of rudeness in democratic history.” In his letter, Kharge further requested the PM that strict disciplinary action be taken on BJP leaders involved and urged them to refrain from such behaviour. "Strict legal action should be taken for such statements so that Indian politics can be prevented from becoming degenerate. Nothing untoward happens. I trust that you will give the required instructions to these leaders to immediately stop making violent statements," Kharge wrote. (With inputs from agencies)

On the 100th day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that the country is witnessing political stability and a spine in its foreign policy for the first time in 60 years. He said this while addressing a press conference on the first 100 days of the third term of the PM Modi government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "After dedicating 10 years to the development, security and welfare of the poor in India, the people of India gave a mandate to the BJP and its alliance parties... This happened for the first time in the last 60 years. This has brought an environment of political stability in the country. We have seen the execution of policies." "For the first time after independence, the world saw a government that India had a spine in its foreign policy... 60 crores of Indians got houses, toilets, gas, drinking water, electricity, 5 kg free ration and health services up to 5 lakhs... Our goal is that when we go into the elections the next time, there would be no one who does not own a house," the Home Minister added. Amit Shah also criticised the previous Congress government, saying, "For the first time after independence, the world saw a government that India had a spine in its foreign policy." Shah also said that in the last 10 years, the Modi government has successfully built a strong India by enhancing internal and external security. "In the last 10 years, the Modi government has been successful in establishing a strong India by strengthening internal and external security... PM Modi brought the New Education Policy, which includes our ancient education system and modern education, which also honours our regional languages," he said. Union Home Minister Shah said that since the launch of 'Make in India', India has become the most preferred manufacturing hub in the world. "When 'Make in India' was launched, many mocked it, but today I proudly say that India has become the world's most preferred manufacturing hub," he said. He also said that India has become a global production hub and many countries of the world want to understand our Digital India campaign and make it the basis of their development. The world is acknowledging that India has a bright future in the space sector," he said. Shah announced that BJP workers will be deployed across the country from September 17 to October 2 to serve the needy to commemorate Prime Minister Modi's 74th birthday. "Many institutions in the country have decided to celebrate PM Modi's birthday as 'Sewa Pakhwada.' From September 17 to October 2, our party workers will help the needy... Modi took oath on June 9 for a third straight term as the head of a coalition government after two full tenures in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enjoyed a majority on its own. Modi, 73, equalled the feat of the first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, who won in the 1952, 1957, and 1962 general elections. "In the first 100 days of the Union government's third term, you can witness our priorities, speed, and scale. We have tried to address every sector and factor, which are required for the rapid progress of the country," Modi said while addressing the 4th edition of Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo (RE-INVEST 2024) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Monday. When is the government completing the first 100 days? The government completes 100 days on September 17. The 100-day events will coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 74th birthday on September 17. To mark the 100 days of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre, ministries have started making plans to showcase the work they have accomplished. "India's diversity, scale, capacity, potential, and performance are unique, and that is the reason I say Indian solutions for global application," Modi said. PM on making Ayodhya model solar city PM also said that the Centre is working to develop Ayodhya, where Ram Mandir was inaugurated earlier this year, as a “model solar city”, and added that the work in this regard is near completion. The government has identified 16 other cities in the country that it aims to develop on the lines of the holy city, he said. “Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram. He was a Suryavanshi. A grand temple of Lord Ram has been built (in Ayodhya), but I want to tell the world that Ayodhya is moving with the target of a model solar city. The work is near completion,” PM Modi said at RE-INVEST 2024. “Our effort is that every household in Ayodhya runs on solar energy. We have so far connected several places with solar energy. We have identified 17 cities in the country that we can develop as solar cities,” he added. The Prime Minister said green future and net zero are India’s commitment and the country is “worried about the future of humanity”. His life was of minimum carbon footprint... He had said that the earth has enough resources to fulfil our needs but not our greed... For us, green future and net zero are not just some fancy words but they are India's commitment... As a developing economy, we had a valid excuse to discard these commitments. We could have said that we cannot play a role in this sector. But we did not do that. We were the people who worried about the future of humanity... Today's India is creating a base for the next 1000 years,” he said. “Our goal is not just to reach the top but also to sustain at the top. India knows its energy needs and requirements to become a developed nation by 2047. We also know that we do not have our own oil and gas reserves... So we decided to build our future on solar, wind, nuclear and hydro power," PM Modi added. (With inputs from agencies)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not address the annual debate at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in United Nations later this month, according to a revised provisional list of speakers issued by the UN.

Modi is scheduled to travel to New York later this month and address a mega community event on September 22 at the 16,000-seater Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island. He will also address the UN’s landmark 'Summit of the Future' that is being convened at the world body’s headquarters on September 22 and 23.

A provisional list of speakers for the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) issued by the U.N. in July had said that Modi would address the high-level debate on September 26. However, according to a revised provisional list of speakers issued by the U.N. on Friday (September 6, 2024), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is now expected to address the General Debate on September 28.

A note signed by Under Secretary General for General Assembly and Conference Management Movses Abelian accompanying the list said that the revised list of speakers "has been prepared by taking into account the changes in the level of representation (upgrades and downgrades) and reflects exchanges among Member States".

This year, the General Debate of the 79th UNGA session will take place from September 24 to 30.

Brazil, traditionally the first speaker at the debate, will open the high-level session on September 24, followed by the US, with President Joe Biden delivering his current term’s final address to global leaders from the iconic UN podium before his country heads to presidential elections in November.

Modi took the oath of office for a historic third term as India’s prime minister in June and had last addressed the annual UNGA session in September 2021. He had visited the UN headquarters on June 21 last year, leading the historic Yoga Day commemoration at the North Lawn at the world body’s headquarters before heading to Washington DC for a State Visit hosted by Biden.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the start of the General Debate, followed by an address by the president of the 79th session of the General Assembly.

Guterres is convening the ambitious Summit of the Future at the UN headquarters ahead of the high-level week, with action days slated for September 20 and 21 and the summit scheduled on September 22 and 23.

World leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes.

"The summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future," the U.N. said.

Over 24,000 members of the Indian diaspora have signed up for the community event in Long Island to attend Modi's address.

The Indian-American Community of USA (IACU) said in a statement that registrations for the 'Modi&US Progress Together’ event have come through 590 community organisations, all of whom have signed up as 'Welcome Partners', from across the United States.

While Indian-Americans from at least 42 states are expected to attend, the response has been particularly strong from the tri-state area, it said.

Sources had told PTI that preparations are in full swing for the community event, coming 10 years after Modi addressed a massive community gathering at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York in September 2014, months after being sworn in as the prime minister for the first time.

In 2019, Modi had addressed the mega community event, 'Howdy Modi', at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where he was joined by former president Donald Trump.

This year, Modi’s visit to the US comes weeks before the country's presidential polls in November. The contest is between Republican candidate Trump and Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris is the first woman of Black and Indian heritage to become the US vice president and the presidential nominee of a major political party.

“We agree that a Code of Conduct should be finalised in this region,” Modi said, adding that India has always given priority to ASEAN Centrality and will continue to do so.

“We support freedom of navigation and overflight under international laws like UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea),” said Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to travel to Brunei on a bilateral visit.

A joint statement issued after their talks said both leaders “reiterated their commitment to maintaining and promoting peace, stability, maritime safety and security, as well as respecting freedom of navigation and overflight and unimpeded lawful commerce, consistent with international law, notably the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.” It added that the two leaders urged all parties to resolve disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, particularly UNCLOS 1982.

Modi described Brunei as an “important partner” in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision, and said his talks with the Sultan included ways to further cement bilateral ties and the two sides are going to further expand trade relations, commercial linkages and people-to-people exchanges.

“India and Brunei have deep historical and cultural ties. This year, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of our diplomatic ties. On this occasion, we have decided to commemorate our relations as Enhanced Partnership,” Modi said.

Their talks covered a range of topics including defence, trade & investment, food security, education, energy, space technology, health, capacity building, culture as well as people-to-people exchanges. They agreed to explore and pursue collaboration in areas such as ICT, fintech, cyber security, new and emerging technologies and renewable energy.

“We had comprehensive talks on various aspects of our ties to give a strategic direction to our partnership. We are committed to strengthening our cooperation in economic, scientific, and strategic sectors. We have decided to strengthen our cooperation in FinTech and Cyber Security along with Agri-industry, pharmaceutical and health sectors,” Modi said.

“We discussed the potential for long-term cooperation in LNG. To strengthen our defence cooperation, we held a constructive dialogue on possibilities of cooperation in the defence industry, training and capacity building. To strengthen our cooperation in the Space sector, we have agreed on cooperation in satellite development, remote sensing, and training,” he said.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues. They condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and called upon states to repudiate it.

They reiterated their commitment to work closely together in mutually beneficial areas to further strengthen the ASEAN–India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“Reflecting on the excellent progress over the years in bilateral relations, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen, deepen and enhance partnership in all areas of mutual interest,” said the joint statement.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction that the historic visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and acknowledged that the deep-rooted friendship between Brunei and India has strengthened in various areas over the past four decades.

They acknowledged that Brunei and India share historical linkages that date back centuries, facilitated by cultural interactions and trade.

Both leaders agreed to further expand bilateral trade and economic ties in areas of mutual interest. They further underlined the importance of regular exchanges and dialogue which should be held through key platforms such as the Joint Trade Committee (JTC) as well as other relevant bilateral, regional, and multilateral forums.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday said India supports a “policy of development, and not expansionism”, a remark that appeared directed at China as he wrapped up a bilateral visit to Brunei, where the two countries also reiterated their commitment to “freedom of navigation” in the region. India and Brunei elevated their ties to “enhanced partnership” as Prime Minister Modi held wide-ranging talks with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah covering defence, trade and investment. “We support the policy of development, and not expansionism,” Prime Minister Modi said at a banquet hosted by Sultan Bolkiah, without naming any country.
