Modi to visit Brunei on Sept 3; in a first ever visit by Indian Prime Minister

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (Aug 30) tendered an apology for the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg.

“In 2013, BJP named me as PM candidate. The first thing I did was sit before Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's samadhi at Raigad as a devotee and started on a new journey,” Modi said in Palghar.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name for us... today I bow my head and apologise to my god Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Our values are different, we are not those people who keep abusing and insulting the great son of Mother India, the son of this land, Veer Savarkar. They are not ready to apologize, they are ready to go to the courts and fight,” he added.

The collapse of the statue, which was inaugurated by PM Modi himself on December 4 last year, triggered a massive political controversy. Leaders from the opposition Congress party had demanded the PM tender an apology.

‘Today I bow my head,’ PM Modi issues apology over Shivaji statue collapse

Pakistan on Thursday (Aug 29) formally declared it was extending an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, slated to be held in Islamabad in October. Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson, confirmed that Islamabad had sent invitations to all SCO heads of nations ahead of the meeting.

"An invitation has also been sent to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi," said Baloch. She added that some nations have already confirmed their presence at the meeting.

"It will be informed in due course which country has confirmed," Baloch said.

Pakistan will host the SCO summit on October 15-16.

Will PM Modi travel to Pakistan?

The Indian PM is highly unlikely to travel to Pakistan, given the tense relations between New Delhi and Islamabad over recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. Also, Pakistan’s invitation is reportedly being seen as a mere “protocol” in India.

SCO doesn’t require heads of state to personally attend the annual summits. So, the Indian leader is expected to dispatch a ministerial delegation to represent New Delhi.

The Chief of Bangladesh's interim government, Muhammad Yunus, will be attending the third Voice of the Global South Summit to be hosted by India on Saturday (Aug 17). The summit will take place virtually and the opening and closing session will be chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The presence of Bangladesh's chief advisor is significant as New Delhi and Dhaka continue the engagement, including a recent meeting of Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma with the Foreign Advisor of interim government Touhid Hossain.

Earlier on Thursday, PM Modi and Bangladesh's Yunus held talks, the first since the latter took charge. During the call, Modi reaffirmed "India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh," said an Indian readout. The Indian prime minister also emphasised New Delhi's "commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives."

During the conversation, New Delhi's concern about the situation of Hindu minorities also came up. PM Modi underlined the "importance of ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities in Bangladesh". After former PM Sheikh Hasina's exit, the country saw increased attacks on minorities, including Hindus. The Yunus government had come out strongly and assured the safety of Hindus. The chief advisor himself visited the famous Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka to show support to the Hindu community of his government.

The Indian prime minister also emphasised New Delhi's "commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives." During the conversation, New Delhi's concern about the situation of Hindu minorities also came up.
