PM Modi to attend ASEAN-India, East Asia Summits: Schedule and what to expect

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Laos for a two-day visit starting October 10 for the ASEAN-India Summit and 19th East Asia Summit. Watch for more details!

Indian PM Modi To Visit Laos For ASEAN-India Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi went straight for the jugular against Congress, a day after his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Assembly election in the northern Indian state of Haryana. Launching the scathing attack, PM Modi called Congress "irresponsible" and a "factory to spread hatred", especially against Dalits while unveiling development projects worth Rs 7,600 crore ($905 million) in the poll-bound state of Maharashtra.

BJP secured a third consecutive tenure in Haryana on Tuesday (Oct 8) despite Congress and most exit polls claiming that the saffron party was in for a rout.

“The entire ecosystem of Congress was misleading the public in Haryana. They tried to spread lies among Dalits. The Dalits realised that Congress would snatch away reservations from them and distribute them to their vote bank,” PM Modi said in a virtual address.

The BJP leader also took a swipe at the grand old party for trying to instigate the farmers to launch another round of protests.

"The Dalit community in Haryana extended record support to the BJP...Congress instigated the farmers. The farmers of Haryana are happy with the farmer-friendly schemes of the BJP. Congress also tried to instigate the youth. They all trust the BJP for a bright future. The public of Haryana has shown that they will not fall prey to the hatred conspiracies of the Congress and its urban Naxal allies," he added.

'They spread lies': PM Modi goes for jugular against Congress, a day after Haryana win

After the BJP secured a historic third consecutive win in Haryana assembly elections on Tuesday (Oct 8), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the people of Haryana have scripted history by blossoming the lotus (BJP's election symbol) and launched an all-out attack on the Congress party.

“This is a win of development. This is the win of the Constitution and democracy,” said PM.

“Haryana has given out a message to Congress. Every family of Haryana united to vote. In the last few years, many conspiracies are brewing to weaken the country. Congress is involved in this conspiracy,” said PM Modi.

PM Modi stressed that Congress wants to weaken the country by weakening the Indian society and spreading anarchy in India, adding, "That is why they are instigating different sections. They are constantly trying to ignite a fire."

"The country saw how attempts were made to instigate farmers, but the farmers of Haryana gave them a befitting reply that they are with the country, they are with the BJP. Many attempts were made to instigate Dalits and OBCs, but they also saw the conspiracy and said that they are with the country, they are with the BJP," he said.

Praising the people of Haryana, PM Modi said that for some time now, many conspiracies have been hatched against India. Many conspiracies are being hatched to weaken India's democracy and social fabric.

"Today Haryana has given a befitting reply to every such conspiracy. Every Indian will have to take a pledge that we will not let any such conspiracy succeed. India will not deviate from the path of development," he said.

"Today, the guarantee of development has overpowered the knot of lies. The people of Haryana have created history. Haryana was constituted in 1966. 13 elections have been held in Haryana so far, out of which in 10 elections, the people of Haryana changed the government, but this time what the people of Haryana have done never happened before. For the first time, a government has been formed in Haryana after completing two terms of 5 years...," he said while addressing the party workers at BJP headquarters in Delhi.

He further said, “Today is the sixth day of Navrati, a day to worship Ma Katyayani who rides a lion and holds a lotus, and she is blessing all of us. The lotus has blossomed for the third straight time in Haryana on this auspicious occasion.”

The PM also thanked CM Nayab Saini and former CM Manohar Lal Khattar.

"Not a single stain of corruption on Haryana government. We only worked for the development of people. And, I want to thank Chief Minister Nayab Saini and former Chief Minister ML Khattar," said Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with the top leaders of Russia and Ukraine were "beginnings of a communication process" between two countries engaged in a serious conflict that has had enormous consequences, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with the top leaders of Russia and Ukraine were "beginnings of a communication process" between two countries engaged in a serious conflict that has had enormous consequences, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday. In an interactive session at The Conclave 2024 organised by news channel Pratidin Time, Jaishankar said Prime Minister Modi was one of the very few world leaders who has the "ability" to speak to both the leaders, who "trust" him. "What are we trying to do? You don't necessarily have to mediate... sometimes you have to communicate. We are actually, simultaneously talking to two countries who are having a conflict," he said to a question on India's role in "mediation" in the Ukraine conflict. Jaishankar said Prime Minister Modi has had at least three meetings with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said National Security Adviser Ajit Doval also met Putin in September to brief him about Modi's discussions with Zelensky. "Obviously that talk is centered around what the conflict is all about. It was necessary for NSA Doval to go to Russia so that the Russians know what the Prime Minister spoke to Zelensky," Jaishankar said. He said the Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its third year and has had enormous human cost and huge economic consequences across the world. Also read: Contact 'lost' with Hezbollah chief Nasrallah's presumed successor Safieddine "You can either watch this conflict and say none of us could do anything about it and say it will end when it ends. Or you can say I am one of the few countries or in our case, one of the few prime ministers who has the ability to speak there and both parties trust him and see whether out of these conversations something moves," Jaishankar said. "I think these are the beginnings of a communication process. Where it will lead, I have not quite reached that point," he added. Jaishankar said the world leaders were supportive of what India was doing. "People are very happy today. The concept of "Classical Languages" was first introduced by the government on October 12, 2004, with Tamil being the inaugural language to receive the honour, followed by Sanskrit in 2005. Other languages like Kannada and Telugu were added in 2008, Malayalam in 2013, and Odia in 2014.

Additionally, the language should possess a unique literary heritage, not derived from any other language, and there should be a clear distinction between the classical language and its modern versions or dialects.

Following the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, "Our Government cherishes and celebrates India's rich history and culture. We have also been unwavering in our commitment to popularising regional languages. I am extremely glad the Cabinet has decided that Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit will be conferred the status of Classical Languages! Each of them are beautiful languages, highlighting our vibrant diversity. Congratulations to everyone"

PM Modi celebrates 10 years of Swachhata campaign, hails it as most successful movement of the century

The dust is yet to settle on the heartbreaking disqualification that Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered at the Paris Olympics in August. In a shocking revelation on Wednesday (Oct 2), amid the Haryana Assembly election campaign, Phogat revealed that she had refused to speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also confessed that it was an indirect call from the Indian officials on terms that the conversation would be recorded.

Phogat makes shocking revelation

“The call had come (from the PM) but I refused to speak. The call did not come directly to me but Indian officials who were there informed me that he (PM Modi) wanted to talk. I was ready. However, they put conditions — no one from my team would be present, while two people from their side would record the conversation for social media,” she said in an interview with The Lallantop.

Phogat was controversially disqualified during the Paris Olympics in the 50 kg women’s category after being found overweight by 100 gm on the day of the final. The Indian wrestler had qualified for the gold medal match and would have scripted history had she won the big prize. However, her disqualification on August 11 came as a big blow to the nation’s hopes as India failed to win a single gold medal.

The 29-year-old then announced her decision to retire from the sport while an appeal was pending at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The appeal was later rejected with Phogat returning empty-handed. It was during this period that Phogat refused to speak to PM Modi and showed her discontent having been at the centre of the wrestler’s protest in 2023.

Immediately after retiring from wrestling, Phogat was approached by the Indian National Congress (INC), the biggest opposition party in India, to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in the state of Haryana. She has been nominated from the Julana seat and will contest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, India’s main ruling party) candidate Yogesh Bairagi, a former commercial pilot.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the anniversary of the 2016 surgical strike on terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Saturday (Sep 28). Recalling the event, he said that when the BJP government responded to the attacks with heavy fire, those on the other side "came to their senses." "Remember that time when bullets were fired from that side and the Congress used to wave white flags. When the BJP government responded to the bullets with shells, the people on that side came to their senses," PM Modi said. On the night of September 28, 2016, the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This was in retaliation for the deadly attack by terrorists based in Pakistan on an Indian army base in Uri, Kashmir, on September 18, which resulted in the deaths of 19 soldiers. Singapore's high commissioner to India Simon Wong has said that the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his country has given a "turbo boosting" of ties. The Indian PM was on a visit to Singapore earlier this month. The visit came after a gap of over five years.

Speaking to WION's foreign affairs editor Sidhant Sibal, Singapore's high commissioner to India pointed to cooperation in semiconductor sectors.

High Commissioner Wong said, "We feel that even as a small country, we can work very, very closely with India on its semiconductor journey because this journey is not a one, two-year process. Is going to be a long drawn, 10-year process to grow". This comes as a pact was signed on semiconductors in developing capacity building during PM Modi’s visit.

He highlighted Singapore's investment plan of over $45 billion in the next few years in India. He also spoke on India-China ties, quad, RCEP, etc. Here’s the full interview:

WION: How do you see the India-Singapore ties, especially in the backdrop of PM Modi's recent visit to your country?
Simon Wong: I want to thank WION, Because of your full coverage of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Singapore, many people across India and Singapore get to know the spur in that relationship between the two countries. In particular, I think the upgrading of relationship ahead of our 60th anniversary into a comprehensive strategic partnership and the visit by Prime Minister Modi ji has set the bar very high for our bilateral relationship, and we have looked into several new areas, in fact, six new areas of collaboration with India. And I feel very, very confident that this new turbo boosting of that relationship can continue.

WION: One of the key outcomes was the semiconductor pact. Much talked about the pact. How is this semiconductor pact going to help India with the Singaporean's know-how?
Simon Wong: We feel very, very strongly about India's push for a semiconductor supply chain, and we feel the willingness at all levels, at the Union level and also at the state level, to push through this ambition. Singapore represents 10 per cent of all chip-making exports approval. And we have 20 per cent of the market on chip-making equipment. We feel that even as a small country, we can work very, very closely with India on its semiconductor journey because this journey is not a one, two-year process. Is going to be a long-drawn, 10-year process to grow, and for India to grow with fewer impediments, we feel that Singapore can collaborate and partake.

WION: So what next for the relationship?
Simon Wong: I think what we want to do for next year, during the 60th anniversary, is to look beyond our concentration of investment in the southern states. The southern states are very, very welcoming of Singapore investment, and we are very familiar with them. I want to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary to look at new areas of growth. I want to quote India's G20 sherpa, Amitabh Kant, who said that India needs 10 states as the engine of growth. In my view, 10 is a really critical mass, and we want to look at new areas. We want to look at UP, Odisha, and MP and I think increasingly we see the willingness of Rajasthan to engage us. So all these four states, we want to do some form of engagement and understanding next year. And also next year, I would like to see more green energy ports and facilities to be put online. Now we have one in Tuticorin, and we are looking at two, or three other ports. We hope that it can be lined up by next year.

WION: India hasn't joined RCEP. What is your position? And we know during the prime minister's visit, many big-ticket investments were announced. So what kind of figures are you looking at?
Simon Wong: Of course, for Singapore, which is very, very trade-based, and we like FTAs, both sub-regional or bilateral, we always have high hopes for India to join RCEP, but we fully understand where India is coming from. We are most willing to wait for India to reconsider RCEP, but at the same time, India is looking at other FTAs, like GCC, which is really a good thing for India. Number two, I think, big-ticket investments coming up, Prime Minister Modi ji, in his roundtable with 18 of our key Singapore businesses, is kindly of pleasantly surprised when all of them basically told Prime Minister Modi ji that they will double or triple their investments in India in the next three to five years. So if I look at the figures, on the average, we do 15 billion US dollars a year of investment here. If I double or triple it, it will be very, very close to $45 billion to $50 billion. So I hope we are successful in pushing this investment.

WION: So my last question to you is, international affairs, India-China relationship. What's your view? Because Singapore has good relationships with both India and China.
Simon Wong: My own view as a small country is that big countries should collaborate and have good relationships with each other. So as friends of both China and India, we want to see a better relationship between the two, between our two big neighbours of ours. And I feel that there are really some green shoots coming up in the discussion. There are high-level discussions between China and India. Hopefully, there is going to be a top level discussion coming up soon, and I hope some of these pain points can be resolved diplomatically.

WION: Your sense on Quad?
Simon Wong: My sense of Quad is a work in progress, and I think many of the Quad countries are looking ahead at security collaboration, security views, and linking the Indo-Pacific area, we welcome that as a sub-regional kind of forum to talk about things. For me, for Singapore, my central point of gravity is always ASEAN, and we feel that ASEAN as the centrality is very big and important in this part of the world as an anchor point of solution.

PM Modi launches three PARAM Rudra supercomputers developed indigenously

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pune was cancelled on Thursday due to heavy rain, Baramati MP and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) Supriya Sule criticised him, saying that he had already inaugurated the metro in the city five times.

Sule hit out at the PM, saying it would have been the sixth time for him to have inaugurated the project in Pune.

"The inauguration of the metro for which PM Modi was scheduled to visit Pune, has already been done five times. It would have been the sixth time if PM Modi came for the same," she said.

Further attacking the BJP-Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government, Sule said the latter should not have disturbed a busy person like PM Modi.

"This is very shocking that the Maharashtra government was seeking time from a busy person like the PM for the same task..." she added.

PM Modi was scheduled to flag off the metro train line from the District Court to Swargate in Pune and launch development projects.

Request to inaugurate metro 'online'

Sule then requested PM Modi to inaugurate the Metro online.

"So I request the PM to inaugurate Pune Metro online...it is the same project he had inaugurated five times in the past...it will help the people of Pune city and the inauguration must not wait for the next visit of the PM," she added.

Addressing a special UN Security Council (UNSC) session on Tuesday (Sep 24) in New York, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had already invited India to join the peace process to end the ongoing war.

Zelensky urged the powerful UN body to prepare for the second peace summit as the war supposedly enters its business end.

"And I invite all of you, all principle nations to join us in this process, all who truly respect the UN Charter. We invite China. We invite Brazil. I have already invited India," said Zelensky.

"We all know what needs to be done if we honestly look at the situation and truly want to stop Russia's war. Most importantly, act together, of course in unity, without creating new and unnecessary divisions of the world into blocks or regional groups," he added.

The first peace summit was held in Switzerland in June and saw the participation of 101 countries while more than 80 countries signed a declaration endorsing “principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine".
