<p>The woman said that she went to thank PM Modi for bringing in legislation to ban instant triple talaq but&nbsp;her husband claimed that he divorced her because of her extramarital affair.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The court had passed a six-month injunction against the Muslim instant divorce law asking Parliament to legislate&nbsp;it and bring in a law.</p>

<p>A five-judge constitution bench, constituting five judges of five faiths - Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism- was split 3:2 as it struck down triple talaq as unconstitutional. Three of the five judges overruled the senior-most judge, the Chief Justice of India JS Khehar.</p>

<p>Justices Kurien Joseph, Rohinton Fali Nariman and Udey Umesh Lalit held that triple talaq is not integral to Islam, is banned in law and lacks approval of the shariat (Islamic religious law).</p>

<p>Chief Justice Khehar and Justice S Abdul Nazir argued stating that while triple talaq may be &quot;sinful&quot;, courts could not interfere with an Islamic personal law which enjoyed protection under the fundamental rights of the&nbsp;Indian constitution.</p>

<p>Chief Justice Khehar further used his power under Article 142 and directed the Union of India to form a proper legislature regarding talaq-e-iddat (talaq with a waiting period). The CJI&nbsp;asked Parliament to pass a law to deal with the issue.</p>

<p>Abdasa assembly seat in Kachchh district is the largest constituency, which is spread over 6,278 sq km while Karanj assembly seat in Surat district is the smallest constituency, which is spread over only 4 sq km.</p>

<p>The survey, released on Thursday, says PM Modi is highly popular in the country and a majority of Indians (60 per cent) approve of his approach toward Kashmir. But when it comes to handling relations with Pakistan, only 21 per cent of the people covered by Pew Research Centre approve of the Prime Minister&#39;s ways, and the situation has remained constant since 2015. Most of the youth - those in the age bracket of 18-29 - approve of Modi&#39;s management of Kashmir situation than the older lot, the survey says.</p>

<p>Pew also says that the Indian population has grown increasingly negative in their views of Pakistan. A staggering 72 per cent of the people who participated in the Pew survey see Pakistan unfavourably. Out of those, almost 64 per cent have a very unfavourable view of Pakistan, the highest level recorded since Pew Research Center began measuring in 2013. And the dislike cuts across the party lines.</p>

<p>An overwhelmingly high number of Indians say the government should use more military force that it is using now to deal with the Kashmir situation. Sixty-two per cent of respondents said&nbsp;the situation in Kashmir is a &quot;very big&quot; problem.</p>

<p>In what can be suggested as a move to highlight escalating inflation under the rule of PM Modi&#39;s government, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi tweeted an image which he later deleted owing to its erroneous content.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tweet contained mathematical figures comparing prices of some of the essential everyday commodities between years 2014 -- when general elections were last held -- and 2017, suggesting massive price rise and inflation. What went wrong? The math did!&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the figures tweeted, a gas cylinder cost Rs 414 in the year 2014 while it now comes for Rs 742 -- a spike of 79% which was quoted as a 179% increase in the figure tweeted by Office of Rahul Gandhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India&#39;s prime minister Narendra Modi in his Maan ki Baat speech to the nation has congratulated the Indian blind cricket team for winning the T20 World Cup for the Blind. This is a very fine gesture. For a very long time, we have celebrated the winning performance of our able-bodied male cricketers. The fact that even a team of blind players can make the nation proud, is definitely a game changer. This shows a shift in our attitude to excellence in sports and our ideas about victory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I am hoping that the prime minister did not choose to congratulate the cricket team because it won a thrashing victory against Pakistan. I believe the prime minister chose to celebrate the indomitable spirit of these people rather than one win against India&#39;s arch nemesis as he also mentioned, in the same speech, the Indian sportspersons who won medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. As a nation of people who are obsessed with their national cricket team led by superman Virat Kohli, this is indeed a welcome break. Though it is too early to tell, this may also mean that with the prime minister making special mention, players from other sports may get a better chance of getting sponsorship, media coverage and improved training opportunities. &nbsp;</p>

<p>But simply congratulating the winners who have made India proud at the international arena will not make India more habitable for the physically disabled. For that, we need a conscious effort, an informed team of policymakers, and commitment on the part of the state as well as the civil society to translate those policies into action. &nbsp;</p>

<p>As a nation, we are not sensitive to the needs of the physically disabled in the public spaces. I know many heart patients who have gone through a heart transplant and are scared to visit the malls. They can&#39;t climb steps and would definitely prefer a ramp to walk into the mall. Very few of Indian malls or for that matter almost none of the shopping complexes, comprising of small shops have ramps. Under the circumstance, how will someone with any form of disability be able to perform the normal functions of life? Already challenged by diseases, our callousness is making their lives even more challenging.&nbsp;</p>

Our cinema halls, bus stands, libraries, marts and offices need to cater to the physically disabled.&nbsp; I have always wondered why there is not a single toilet in my office that is accessible to people with physical problems. Similarly, our public transports are equally apathetic. Buses in the uses all come equipped with automatic staircases which can come down to the level of the footpath, so that anyone with a disability can get into the bus in the wheelchair. I still remember in one of my cross-country bus journeys in the US, we waited for 3 hours because the stairs got jammed, preventing someone with an amputated leg to get into the bus. The bus did not leave without taking the passenger concerned.</p>

<p>India is getting all these fancy, air-conditioned buses with huge glass windows but none of these are equipped to serve better the physically disabled.</p>

<p>So, as a nation which is fast developing, it will be prudent to not only pay lip-service to the disabled. As we work towards encouraging more people to donate their working organs to those without, we should also strive to make the world more habitable for them. If India&#39;s public spaces are made more hospitable to people with special needs, it will definitely help to challenge the taboo against physically handicapped. Far from being a burden to the society, then they will become an asset. Even without being a trailblazer, such a person can be a valuable member of the civil society.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only world statesman to have stood up to China&#39;s <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/india-welcome-to-join-belt-and-road-initiative-says-china-22994">Belt and Road Initiative</a>, also known as One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR), even though the US has been silent on the ambitious project till recently, a top American expert on China said on Friday.</p>

<p>During a Congressional hearing, Michael Pillsbury, Director of Center on Chinese Strategy at the prestigious think-tank Hudson Institute, told lawmakers that Modi and his team have been quite outspoken against Chinese President Xi Jinping&#39;s ambitious project.</p>

<p>&quot;The only statesman in the world who stood up to it yet, is Prime Minister Modi. He and his team have been quite outspoken, partly because the Belt and Road Initiative includes violation of Indian sovereign claims, Pillsbury said.</p>

<p>&quot;But the US government, until now and this is a five- year-old initiative if you count the early part of it, has been silent, he said.</p>

<p>Praising the Trump administration for its new Indo- Pacific strategy, the former Pentagon official said in recent days people have heard more than 50 times by members of the Trump administration including the president himself mentioning &quot;free and open&quot; Indo-Pacific region.</p>

<p>&quot;The Chinese have already attacked this. They don&#39;t like it, said Pillsbury, who is considered an authority on China- related issues.</p>

<p>The BRI aimed at building a vast network of infrastructure projects expanding China&#39;s expertise and capital to different parts of the world includes US $50 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) over which India has protested as it traversed through Pakistan- occupied-Kashmir (PoK).</p>

<p>India boycotted the Belt and Road Forum (BRF) organised by China in May this year to highlight its concerns over Beijing pushing projects through the the PoK.</p>

<p>He said the US companies face the threat of intellectual property theft with reports that China has been stealing cutting-edge research as well as sensitive trade secrets from the US.</p>

<p>And that includes companies working in the clean energy sector who cannot compete with state-backed firms, he alleged.</p>

<p>Pillsbury said Chinese are offering low interest loans to countries that cannot afford it.</p>

<p>&quot;We&#39;re already saw the example of Sri Lanka, which fell behind in its payments and then was the subject of coercion that if you transfer the main port here in Sri Lanka to Chinese control, we will forgive the debt. The Sri Lankans did it, he said.</p>

<p>There were concerns of debt burden brought in by the BRI projects after Sri Lanka opted for long-term lease of its Hambantota port for US $1.12 billion debt swap.</p>

Narendra Modi only world statesman to stand up to China on OBOR: US expert

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins his three-day visit to <span style="display: none;">&nbsp;</span>the Philippines today, key features of which will be<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/asean-summit-pm-modi-trump-other-leaders-to-arrive-in-manila-tomorrow-24000"> his participation in the ASEAN Summit </a>on November 13 and the the 12th East Asia summit and ASEAN business and investment summit on Tuesday. &nbsp;</p>

<p>PM Modi left for&nbsp;the Philippines&nbsp;today morning.</p>

<p>PM Modi said earlier these meetings were important as they would further enhance India&#39;s trade and investment ties with ASEAN member states, which constitute a significant over 10 per cent of India&#39;s external trade.</p>

<p>The Indian prime minister will be accompanied by top diplomatic and security officials during his visit to Manila including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval And Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The prime minister, who will arrive in Manila today afternoon, will participate in the opening ceremony of the 31St ASEAN Summit which will be followed by a visit to the International Rice Research Institute at Los Banos.</p>

<p>He will also interact with the Indian community in the Philippines at a reception hosted by the Indian envoy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;I look forward to interacting with the Indian Community in the Philippines. There will also be visits to the International Rice Research Institute and Mahavir Philippines Foundation Inc,&quot; Prime Minister Modi had tweeted.</p>

<p>Also on the cards is a bilateral meeting with the President of Philippines and the current chair of the ASEAN, Rodrigo Duterte.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister will also meet some of the other world leaders, who are participating in both summits including US President Donald Trump, Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, Brunei&#39;s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern.</p>

<p>PM Modi will have a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump at the ASEAN summit, sources told WION.</p>

<p>Other leaders expected to attend the summits include Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ASEAN leaders are set to extensively deliberate on evolving security challenges facing South East Asia.</p>

<p>Issues relating to maritime security, terrorism, non-proliferation and migration are likely to be the main points of discussion at the East Asia Summit which, apart from the 10 ASEAN member states, includes India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the US.</p>

<p>PM Modi is likely to reassert India&#39;s call for crafting a coordinated global initiative in dealing with traditional and non-traditional threats facing the region.</p>

<p>The US, France and Japan have been pitching for a larger role by India in the strategically key Indo-Pacific region where China has been trying to increase its military presence.</p>

<p>Prime minister Modi will also participate in the ASEAN business and investment summit as well as a meeting of leaders of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).</p>

<p>The RCEP, comprising 10-member ASEAN bloc and six other countries &mdash; India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand &mdash; is engaged in negotiations for a free trade pact.</p>
