Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said with the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir, the dream of "One Nation, One Constitution" has been realised, as he lashed out at the opposition speaking against the move, asking if they felt it was so necessary why didn't they make it permanent in the past 70 years.

Here are the highlights of PM Modi's Independence Day speech "We do not believe in creating problems or prolonging them. In less than 70 days of the new Government, Article 370 has become history, and in both Houses of Parliament, 2/3rd of the members supported this step We want to serve Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh," the PM said. Modi also told the nation that it was essential for his government to establish a Jal Shakti Ministry, as nearly half of the households in the nation do not have piped water connection. "India understands the importance of water conservation and thus, a new ministry for Jal Shakti has been created. Steps have been taken to make the medical sector even more people-friendly," he said. Modi said he has also cracked down on sections of the bureaucracy which sought a delay in implementation of projects and were allegedly involved in graft. "Such officers were told to leave now. Now the nation wants to develop on a fast speed. There is no place for them to obstruct the pace of development," he said, referring to the recent orders issued by his government to forcefully retire officials under various Ministries. On black money and corruption, Modi said his government is continuously striving towards eliminating the menace and extract the money illicitly hoarded by corrupt individuals and firms. Modi also reiterated his vision of "ease of doing business", claiming that his government has been constantly removing obsolete laws which serve no purpose than to embroil entrepreneurs in red tape. "I always ask this question..can we not reduce the interference of Governments in people's lives? Let our people have the freedom to follow their own aspirations. We have abolished a lot of laws," he said. The Prime Minister further added that he would like to move beyond ease of doing business. "The government wants to provide of 'ease of living' to the people," he added. Linking the adverse living standard to the "population explosion", Modi said the need of the hour is to have a greater discussion and awareness on family size. Those who restrict the number of offsprings are actually doing a service to the nation, the PM further said. "Population explosion in the country will create various problems for the coming generations. Those who follow the policy of small family also contribute to the development of the nation, it is also a form of patriotism," he said.

This may help in the emergence of export hubs. Our guiding principle is Zero Defect, Zero Effect," said Prime Minister Modi while addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 73rd Independence Day.

"Why shouldn't we think of becoming an export hub? Every region in India has its own unique products, indigenous handicraft and its own handloom. Why can't we utilise all this to provide India the impetus for becoming an exporting nation?" he asked.

Stressing that world is eager to trade with India, the Prime Minister said, "Today, the government is stable and policy system is predictable. We are putting all efforts to keep prices under check and speed up development. The fundamentals of our economy are strong."

Modi also emphasised on the Centre's mission of making India a 5 trillion dollar economy.

"Everyone is thinking how will we move forward? Who will we develop? To what extent can we develop? Fulfilling the dream of five trillion dollar economy is the answer to it. This target can be achieved if every citizen starts contributing to the nation. It is not difficult if everyone strives for it."

Prime Minister took a jibe at the previous UPA government and said India became a two trillion dollars economy in the last 70 years while one trillion dollars was added in the last five years.

"In the last 70 years we became a two trillion dollar economy, but in the last five years, we added one trillion dollars to the economy. This gives me the confidence of becoming a five trillion dollar economy in the coming years," he said.

"The new government has not completed even 10 weeks, but in this short period in every sector we have taken important steps. This includes decisions for Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, the end of Triple Talaq, steps for the welfare of farmers and traders and changes in anti-terror law. Article 370 and 35A being revoked is a step towards realizing the dream of Sardar Patel," he said.

UNRWA has been providing relief to 5.4 million Palestinians refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, and the Gaza Strip since 1950. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Palestine in February 2018, India had announced that it will increase its contribution to the body from $1.25 million to $5 million. India has been providing assistance programmes in Palestine to strengthen capacity-building efforts. Under India-Palestine development partnership, New Delhi is currently funding eight on-going developmental projects worth of $ 59 million dollars including building a 215 Bed Super Specialty Hospital in Bethlehem.

"My heartfelt gratitude to Rashtrapatiji and the people of our nation for bestowing the Bharat Ratna on me. This honour is more for the people of our country from whom I have received much more than I have been able to give," Mukherjee tweeted.

He said in another tweet, "The Bharat Ratna for me is also indeed an acknowledgement of the millions who strive every day to make Bharat - the diverse, plural, compassionate and inclusive idea that it is."

Many dignitaries in the central government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, attended the grand event where Pranab Mukherjee received the Bharat Ratna from his successor, President Ram Nath Kovind.

Pakistan on Wednesday had announced that it will be downgrading diplomatic ties with India. In a follow-up move, the Imran Khan government also expelled Indian envoy to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria and said that the new Pakistan high commissioner to India Moin-ul-Haq won't be sent to Delhi.

Pakistan's move came in the wake of the Indian government's decision to scrap Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

India's ministry of external affairs said the recent decisions by the government and Parliament were driven by a commitment to extend opportunities to Jammu and Kashmir for development which were earlier denied by the temporary provision in the Constitution.

"It is not surprising that such developmental initiatives that could address any disaffection in Jammu and Kashmir should be negatively perceived in Pakistan, which has utilised such sentiments to justify its cross-border terrorism," the external affairs ministry said.

"The recent developments pertaining to Article 370 are entirely the internal affair of India," the statement added.

"The government regrets the steps announced by Pakistan on Wednesday and would urge that country to review them so that normal channels for diplomatic communications are preserved," the external affairs ministry asserted.

In a related development, Islamabad also partially closed its airspace with India on the eastern front. At least three entry points out of the nine between India and Pakistan on the eastern were closed, according to reports.

The airspace will be closed from August 6 to September 5 between 02:45 to 11:00(Pakistan Standard Time) every day except Sundays.

Pakistan's Response To India's Kashmir Decision Is Likely To Lead To Escalation Of Tensions

Wion Edit: Analysing Pakistan's response to abrogation of Article 370

The main focus of Prime Minister Modi's address to the nation on Thursday was Jammu and Kashmir and the abrogation of Article 370 from the state.

Referring to Article 370 PM Modi said, "Many of our brothers and sisters from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh were deprived of their rights due to the Article which acted as an obstruction to their development. The entire country along with the state took the historic decision to remove the Article."

"Sardar Patel, BR Ambedkar, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and millions of countrymen's dreams were fulfilled after the Article was revoked."

"Our brothers and sisters from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were suffering due to Article 370. No one ever discussed this. Surprisingly no one could ever talk about the advantages of the Article."

"The legislation that were formed in the Parliament after days of contemplation and discussions were not applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. The state's Dalits, minorities and poor were deprived of the Act that prevailed in other parts of the country. The people of Jammu and Kashmir never enjoyed their rights under the Minority Act, the Minimum Wage Act, SC/ST Act. Now all laws made by the Parliament will apply in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Referring to the people who migrated to India from Pakistan after the partition, PM Modi said, "There were many people in the state who enjoyed the right to vote in the Lok Sabha but did not have the right to cast their votes in the assembly and municipal elections. With the scrapping of Article 370, rights to those who had migrated will be restored."

Further assuring the people of the state PM Modi said, "soon they will be able to choose their state government with transparent elections."

Under the new arrangement, the Centre will make sure that the workers and police in Jammu and Kashmir get the same rights that are enjoyed by people from the same fraternity in India.

He further said that soon the state will have ample job opportunities to fill in the vacancies in Central and state government. The PM also added that the government will also encourage the public and private sector in Jammu and Kashmir to provide job opportunities to the people of the state.

He said after the abrogation of article 370, the Panchayat in the state will work to give best results.

He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir will defeat separatism and will move forward with new hopes.

"With good governance, the people of Jammu and Kashmir will achieve all their goals in a transparent environment."

The PM hit out at the dynastic politics in Jammu and Kashmir and said that so far parties had not allowed the youth to lead. Now the young people from the state will come forward and take the state to new heights. He also urged the women to come forward and lead the way for development in the state.

PM Modi said Ladakh's development was now the responsibility of the central government.

"Article 370 was used as a tool by Pakistan to terrorise Kashmiris. Nearly 42,000 people died over the last three decades."

"Kashmir was the preferred destination for Bollywood movies. Now when the situation is normal, people from world over would shoot movies there. The region has the potential to become the world`s biggest tourism destination. Filmmaking would provide employment, " the PM said.
